How to Suede Wrap a Headliner

- Here's how to wrap a car's headliner in suede fabric material.
The procedure is similar to many vehicles, and is demonstrated on a Toyota Camry.
The first stage of the video covers removal of the headliner, including removal of the A, B, and C pillars, sunvisors, dome light, overhead console, sunroof shade and grab handles.
The headliner may be difficult to remove from the vehicle, since it was put in through the windshield from the factory. It has to be maneuvered out the front passenger door, and might get slightly bent upon removal.
The next stage of this project is to lay out the suede material over the pieces, once they have been cleaned. The fabric was purchased from a local fabric store, its slightly stretchy which makes it compliant to curvy surfaces.
The suede material is then cut and spray adhesive is then used to attach the fabric. The edges are then trimmed and pasted around the edges.
In this project, 3M 90 spray adhesive was used on the headliner. During application, it didn't apply properly, so it was supplemented with 3M 77 spray adhesive. Unfortunately after a few days, the suede fabric pulled away from the corners of the headliner, and heavy duty contact cement was used to re-secure the fabric material without issue. The headliner has to air out for a few days for the fumes to release before reinstalling into the car.
Finally, the headliner and trims are reinstalled back into the car. Parts that broke during disassembly were replaced with parts from the junkyard, so its important to have a source for small interior parts before tackling this job!
This black suede conversion was done in conjunction with a black leather interior swap on my 2004 Toyota Camry V6:

Man, I wish I had one of those fancy multi use toothbrushes
At the end of the video I show you how to make one
@@speedkar99 hi what kind of satin black spray did you use for the plastic pieces and trims to match the suede ? thank you
Instead of regular gloves can you wear your brother's socks as gloves?
Good idea....maybe next time it's cold outside
Oh my gosh.. Hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂
@@speedkar99 hi what kind of satin black spray did you use for the plastic pieces and trims to match the suede ? thank you
Just don’t use the stuff crusty ones 😂
😂😂😂😂
You broke that clip because you're using an expired toothbrush. You need a battery operated one.
Haha hey that's not a bad idea...if my brother only had one ....
Such a fantastic channel. Everything you need to know/see and nothing you don't
Thanks...
Lots of variety here
Next up I'm going to use my wife's toothbrush to install fuzzy dice to my rear-view mirror that I made from my brother's underwear. Gotta love this channel!!!
Yummy!
I did a headliner about 4 years ago though it was the cardboard backed type with foam layer then the velour fabric. What goes wrong there is the foam breaks down leaving no adhesion for the fabric and it was a common problem on many cars of the 90s. I found that using the brush on contact from a tin for the board in conjunction with the spray for the fabric worked pretty well. Good coverage important but also important not to soak through the fabric. I also found doing half at a time helped, do the more complex part first as there's sure to be alignment issues. Common advice is also not to wash the fabric (I reused the existing) as it shrinks. Use a stiff wire brush to get the foam dust off the cardboard.
Thanks,
I didn't have to deal with removing the old material since it was intact so I wrapped on top of it
Dit you reaply the foam?
I'm never planning on doing this job, (mostly because I don't have a brother to steal his toothbrush and socks or ten cousins to help me) but I watched this video only because I like watching your videos, I'm glad I did, I learned a great hack @7:30, plus I learned a lot about glue.
Glad you watched it
I love how you use your brothers items as tools
I get the feeling you have 'unresolved issues' with your brother... @4:39
He sounds like he’s about to yell out “MOTHER” or “FAIRY GOD PARENTS!” 🤧😂
Lol
Other mechanics have thousands of dollars worth of tools this guy does it all with a tooth brush I am telling you he is next level...
i've been using my toothbrush wrong my entire life.. 😂
You sure have. Discover new uses for it
speedkar99 i love how you always almost answer to everybody :)
Thank you. Very comprehensive. It came out beautiful.
It sure did and appreciate it today
My car (thankfully) came from factory with black headliner and black leather trim. I love the looks of the black on black. Just makes the cabin seem so premium and your eyes don't wonder around. Sad thing is though the same brand (Holden) chose to cut costs of their last Aussie built model by not having a black headliner in the top line model. Really makes the cabin feel cheaper with that grey/cream colour headliner. The black headliner in the Camry definitely makes the cabin look so much nicer.
Epic project
Good video! as always! thank you Mr. Speedkar!
You are welcome
Brilliant ending chap and great video. Thanks
next I'm gonna use this sock to remove these 3 12mm bolts? lmao
I'm gonna try that next time
This is a super pimp mod!
I just spray painted my interior, looks aight....
Thanks, it came out great
Beautiful mod!
One word of advice to your viewers: make sure your vehicle does NOT have curtain airbags!
The suede would likely prevent the airbags from deploying properly in the event of a crash.
Why is that? It's not like its strong leather material. Same as any normal fabric so why wouldn't airbag deploy?
Poor brother man!...maybe we can start a GoFundMe for him so he can purchase some new toothbrushes and socks!!!...
Sure we can! But then I might just steal even more....
I use my wifes tooth brush to get dog shit out of my sneakers.....petty revenge I know but very satisfying to watch her brush her teeth!
Eww
So glue on top of original material?
So when applying new fabric to a headliner fabric that is in good shape and will not be removed, only covered, do you recommend contact adhesive or the 3m spray adhesives? I read the description and you used both. I have a headliner that I want to cover with vinyl without removing the fabric that is already there as it is in perfect shape and will be a pain to remove. Thanks so much in advance!
Contact adhesive!
Don’t do what this idiot did, remove the existing headliner and scrub away the foam with a brush then use the correct amount of 3m 90 and it will stick flawlessly
Whereeeeeee do you live bro????? I need this done to my seats on my Nissan Maxima I'll pay top dollar for the great work you do bro even using your brothers tooth brush hands down respect!!
I knew this dude was Canadian somehow before seeing the mastercrap drill.
Looks great
well done
Thanks
I would hate to be in that car when it's sunny out
Yeah it's hot!
A nightmare task, but good job.
It's just long and tedious but the results are great
Use the permatex headliner spray in the orange can. It has a way better spray pattern
I usually use loctite spray adhesive for headliner has worked for several years without failure. Like 10 dollars a can though
Good tip
Brother brush breaks so many things better use yours next time 😂😂😂
Keep it up tho cool videos
I'd like to suede wrap my headlights, what toothbrush do i need for that - brother's or sister's? Used or new? The headlights seem to be of H7/H1 variety FWIW.
Wrapping with just cloth is enough? What if we use a sponge layer as a padding? That would give a much rich feeling. And leather wrap grap handles?
Yes. I wrapped on top of the existing sponge so it feels very soft to the touch
@@speedkar99 oh that nice. How much did it cost for the whole thing?
Take a shot every time he says "my brothers toothbrush".
foam laid first or foam back material?
Were the creases in the headliner noticeable after you put it back into the vehicle?
What if you don’t have a brother? Who’s toothbrush are you supposed to use?
Anyone you don't like 😉
Great video good stuff
pls, make a video on the effect of water on lubrication material used on car wheel bearings?
How is it holding?looking to bo my interior
Can you tell what car you are working on?
Camry
It's in the description
its not your brothers camry, is it ?
i have a question in the sun visor clip if i buy a new one install it in a 90 degree and rotate it or just install it straight without rotate it ??
Clips Straight on from what I remember
...we used to scrape toothbrushes on the floor at night in the pen and stiff em with a lighter to make em hard at the end...
Another excellent informative video! I am a bit concerned that the old headliner will start to sag under the weight of the suede. Did you remove the old headliner material?
I didn't remove the old headliner since it was still intact
I don't think it'll say, especially with all that glue on there now!
So is the 3m 77 good to use for the headliner? Or should I use the contact cement for the headliner?
Both, the 77 will droop after a while
I Know this was a while ago but how long did the headliner actually last? Want to do it to my car
With contact cement I have no issues with it holding up.
On my old car (I also have a video) I mainly used spray adhesive and it got droopy after a while in the hot weather
I had the same issue with the 3m 90 spray. It comes out in streaks and leaves bumps that can be seen.
I use to use my ex girlfriend's toothbrush for everything as while. I would make sure both toilets and and the floor around them were clean before morning so she would be able to use it before work and not have to wait on me😭🤣😂
Good one 🤐
The 77 spray works a lot better than the 90 for me.
Yeah it depends on the materials and how much heat
I don’t have a brother, can I still do this project?
brothers toothbrush lol
Best tool
I dont have a brother, would my sister's tooth brush work instead?
Yes I use my wife's Toothbrush all the time
the fabric is elastic suede or non elastic?
Your brother must be pissed 😂
What brand/color suede?
What kind of car ? Toyota Avalon ?
This was a Camry
77 is also TT or GG or GT in gematria. 3M = 33 FYI!
Oh my God you have me dying
Why
Where did you get the material??
What?!? También tapizas carros carnal ? Órale, yo soy mechanico y tapicero me falta auto body and paint (:
What can I get one of those toothbrushes 😂
I wish your moon roof was broken so you could show us how to fix it 😭 that's literally only thing wrong with mine now
No! Don't wish for my moonroof to go
You did this more like a documentary rather than a tutorial. Next time, summarize the problems at the beginning and the solutions.
Btw where are you that you need a jacket? HAHAHA
Canada
What material did you use? Do you have a link?
I bought it from a local fabric store
@@speedkar99 So, how is the headliner doing? Did the fabric come off or is it fine? I'm planning to do the same and I worry that the suede might come off over time... thank you for you video and help!
I did the same job on two C class w202s. But Mercedes doesn't come apart with a toothbrush. That Toyota is basically falling apart by itself
Yes Toyotas come apart easily
Hahahaha this is funny! Loved it!
I would have removed the fabric from the headliner then the foam liner. Add a sheet of custom foam then the suede liner
That works but it's alot more involved if your headliner is stuck
I’m guessing that adhesive leaves a bad stain so there’s no going back? Haha
Yes. If you go back you have to redo the headliner
speedkar99 how much did the suede cost you?
guys i think thats his brothers toothbrush
OMG man...1. Remove the old headliner and scrape off the foam.
2. Use a proper suede foam backed material.
3. The 3M spray works great but you missed a step. Spray some glue on the headliner and let it sit overnight. That gives it base coating and helps with binding. You just sprayed and slapped it there of course it won't hold.
brushdriver
Yep
Multi use tools
Where is "Ish" when you need him? :)
where do i buy a brother?
You don't have to buy a brother. Just steal one
Hahahaha your brothers tooth brush!!!😂😂😂🙊
Does ur brother know ur using his toothbrush???😂
His brother must hate him
No, he must love me for working on his car too
You got 142k subs and u took the time to respond to a comment from a video u posted 1 year ago, mad respect to you sir
shouldve used your brothers comb hande to flatten the suede ;)
That tutorial was too much for me to be serious about it looool
Is it that complicated?
@@speedkar99 No it's actually fairly easy. But how u made the video had me laugh throughout the entire process, I couldn't concentrate loool from your brother's toothbrush to your brother's socks loool welldone
Where can I buy your brother's toothbrush?
Find your brother, steal his brush. Let him go out and buy you the next brush...
You k ow what your doing
7:25 ohh god. 😮
Handy dandy tooth brush
So helpful in removing panels
What if the headliner is leather?
Would never happen leather is far to heavy and not nearly stretchy enough!
Proper HL are 1/8” or 1/4” foam backed materials
For as good as you are with fabric, you should never touch spray paint ever again
Lol
Why not use your own toothbrush?
Because I actually brush my teeth with it unlike some people
0:49
Ichiban moto 😘😘
i feel like he hates his brother
Let's just say it's brotherly love
Can't u use your own toothbrush? 😁
No! I actually use it...unlike some people...
Looks easy, but it effing tedious job
whats this guys deal with toothbrushes lol
I steal them from my brother
They are very handy when working on cars
U nearly broke everything in that car, i will report u to your brother. lols
You literally broke like all the clips🤦🏻♂️
Oh well
freakin tedious but the outcome is nice
Yes it takes alot of patience and experience taking things apart
too much obstracles
True. There's alot of parts that goes into removing the headliner
Conclusion: Don't buy 3M90 adhesive spray. It doesn't work.
Agreed
*no relation to AvE
That was certainly a messy failed project. Not rec. any body doing to their car😨😥
