I recommend wrapping all the pillars, too. Completely changes it from feeling like a cheapo budget car to a nice one.
Easy in older cars but newer cars with the pillar mounted airbags might need a different approach to keep the airbags working the way they were designed too.
@@soarwiththeeagles5679 the airbags are actually all the way along the roof behind the headliner. It says airbag on the pillar as a way of identifying (mostly for emergency services) if the car is fitted the curtain airbags or not. You can safely remove and cover the pillars without upsetting the airbags.
specially a good idea if youre going from a light color to black :))
F
Couple things I always recommend if you have time is to let it dry overnight out of the car upside down. Just to let that glue really cure before putting it back in where if the glue didn't really grab fully it might want to sag and then the glue fully dries over night and now you have a saggy spot and would have to pull it all back out. Also hitting it with a heat gun or blow dryer before reinstallation helps cure the glue as well if you are in a hurry. I've done a few of these over the years and let's just say those first couple looked great at first and then a month later were like grannies panties LOL
Nice 👍🏼 I did one about 20 years ago and back then I didn’t know the meaning of “less is more” as far as the glue (3M Super 77) was concerned, and yeah it was garbage hahah... anyway I wanted to ask you do you start from the center? or at one side? Just curious if you wouldn’t mind sharing any more tips you may have? Now I think I want to do this again, and I’m way more capable this time around after having 2 built cars (LS1 GTO ~600whp, bugeye WRX ~456whp) and a handful of stereo installations under my belt lol I’m still humble enough to know that I definitely don’t know everything, and even tho its probably a straight forward process. It doesn’t hurt to ask someone that has more knowledge in a particular subject... any info you got is much appreciated 🙏🏼👍🏼
I really enjoyed watching this boys, one thing I may add, is only apply directly over a perfectly fine headliner , for the best results remove the old headliner fabric and sand off all old foam and leave the board clean before applying new foam back headliner ,
Mickey great Video you are truly a man with many gifts
How do I get this exact fabric?
I do quite a few suede headliners at work. Definitely harder to work with than standard headliner fabric. Something that works well on cars with deep handle pockets and sunroofs is a steamer. Heating it allows it to stretch Into those tougher area's nicely 🤙
And here I am, sitting in my garage and watching this Video while taking a break from wrapping my MK5 GTIs headliner because it is saggy :D
I did it just a few weeks ago. Lost the nut for the headliner mirrors and have hella wrinkles. I don't know if it's a win or loss. But at least my MK5 doesn't sag anymore.
mine was sagging as well, should have waited for this vid to come out before having someone else do it haha
This is literally my DREAM car it looks amazing
I used the 3M adhesive once many years ago without wearing a mask and ended up not being able to smell for a couple of years....
wait, so no one is going to talk about how he didnt remove the old material before laying down the alcantara suede???? or did he remove it ???
@@eatmoreeats9566 he covered that in the video. He said it was not needed for his type
@RLOPO im still wondering this
I'm about to tackle this project. Masking up for sure
Love it Mickey, I have some suede to wrap my R32 skyline headliner and interior panels. Thanks for the motivation, keep the How To’s up.
That's great news mate. How did it go? I have an R33 & didn't know if it can safely come out via the doors or if the window would need to be removed?
In England if it turns out looking like that you wud say it looks the bollox .In other words it looks really good very nice job Ricky well done 👍👍👍👍
you meran "the dogs bollox"
you saved me in making a choice which is the best material to use I was debating the same thing which to use and your right Alcantara is dang spendy and Suede is allot cheaper and looks just as good and this will make my talon pop and my upholstery shop can do same to my door cards and seats.
If your door cards go right up to the window you would be advised to use Alcantara as it is the only suede cloth manufactured to resist the higher heat and UV loadings that you get at the door top, dashboard, & steering wheel. Fit other brands and you will get fading from the sun in time
If your door cards are inserts, not going right up to the glass, cheaper alternatives should be OK.U
A nice upgrade would definitely be the head unit, I changed mine to the kenwood 7706 and the sound is unbelievably better. Recommended by a lot of others as well
That's a future video. :-)
I want this car so bad. One of my dream cars to be honest and seeing how you guys are building this car is just amazing. I feel like i'm the one doing it rn. Kudos on the great job!
Looks good man. I wanted to do this in the past and never went through with it. It’s an easy process. I just never had the motivation. Wish I would have.
This is the only videos getting through this quarantine... that subie is amazing!!!!
Ahh cool. I saw it in one shot and wondered how it all worked! Great job as always, loving your channel, locked down in Vienna!
Mickeys such a cool and smart dude love this channel
Thank you!
Thx for the how to I might do my E46 myself now instead of taking it to an interior specialists.
This has been an awesome build guys.
Thanks Mickey.. this was a respite from our lockdown. Things to look forward to after the covid blows over🙏🏽
Throtl ViP squad Good afternoon Mickey, Rickie awesome more Subaru sti content new head liner install the sti is going to look sick with the suede head liner great custom touch to put it over the top 👍😊🔥
So question!
does outdoor temperatures effect glue at all?
thank you! Great videos keep it going gents🔥
and suggestion for new how to video
how to replace torn/ old floor carpeting👍
following
thats a great question. plus was there anything you would do differently the second time you would do this?
Yes, it can. When I did this it was 70 degrees inside the shop. Pretty much ideal temperature. I suggest doing a job such as this during a mild day. Too cold and the glue will not be as effective and too hot the glue will cure very fast.
@@mickeyandrade Excellent video mate!! Like the previous guy asked also, what about the carpet? Are you going to do a video showing how to do this sort of thing with the more complex shapes & angles etc?
The money shot 👌🏼👌🏼
you should see a mk4 golf headliner :)) easiest thing. No wires stuck to it, compared to Japanese cars.. and they are stiffer
Looks like a great mod for my Evo 8. The HL is looking a bit "how ya goin..." Thanks Micky boy for the tute.
Great instructional video :) I've replaced/removed a couple of headliners on 80s/90s VW Golfs/Polos, holy moly those are thin and flimsy! xD
ive been needing to do this to my dc5. nice.
Keep up the good work Throtl! Glad to still be able to enjoy your content while in isolation!
Please Suede wrap the dashboard/door cards as well! It'll look so amazing!
Fantastic episode. I did my headliner using the same methods. Great how to.
Do you restore wheels? I’ve always been fascinated in wheel restoration. I’ve seen different videos on you tube. Have you guys ever done that?
Rickie is doing one currently! It will be up next week.
You guys are doing an amazing job on my STI.
When doing this in newer cars be aware that the A and C pillars have airbags and you would need to disconnect the battery and wait 30 minutes before disconnecting the air bags
Yes, me disconnecting the battery was edited out. VERY important. Not sure on the waiting period however. Never heard of that or had any issues. I will research that more. Thanks for the comment.
This is brilliant! thanks heaps. I'm going to do this to my car.
Awesome this is something i always wanted to do in my car! great the how to videos!
While the headliner is out, I tend to put some sound deadening and closed cell foam on the roof for noise and temperature insulation
Mikey you a beast tackle anything 🦾
Good job Mick, it looks GREAT!
Turned out great!
Nice work guys!!
Such a gorgeous car
You have much skill.. awesome dude
I'd only say, switch out those dome lights with leds. Looks fucking amazing bro!
Thank you for sharing. I'm looking forward to doing this project 👍
The ek looks nice!!!!
I notice a lot of car guys bring there vehicles in to get the windows tinted a how to video on tinting could be useful for some people
I just love this car
Nice tute mate 👍🏼
jeez i really hope the person that wins this looks after this car well, because too much work and effort has gone into this car!!
You make it look way to easy 👍
Damn that was an amazing job and now thinking I am doing next on my car. ✌🏽
love this build!
Good job. Look fresh.
That yellow lambo looks just like mine that was stolen in my dreams 🤔
I plan on drinking a beer too! Might take a shot of some sweet Kentucky bourbon 🥃! OBKY till I die!
Cheers!
Will you guys be reuploading the battery relocation video?
Yes, needed to make some changes to clarify a couple points. It'll be back up this week.
Wrap the HVAC and shifter trim with this too!
are you guys gonna be putting in new front seats in it?
Looks great! A starry night fiber optic kit would have been that last lil touch but still sick.
Just got a hatch and the past owners put a galaxy headliner in that looks like crap and I’ll be fixing that for sure now, great vid
"That cardboard stuff" Masonite, I've used it in woodworking for backing panels (like an ent.stand) or in your case a cheap material to make door cards, heavy duty stencils but yea man made me think for a second but its called Masonite you can buy it at any of your home improvement stores.
What do you think about sound deadening the roof, the floor, doors and wheel wells to knock down some of the road noise? I think it would totally change the interior experience.
Yep. Totally can. That is a valid statement.
Really liking the "how to" style content. Also keep up the South Park (not garbage) memes instead of TJ's (garbage) SpongeBob inserts ;)
You guys should install a tail as turn kit from diode dynamics!
Did y’all wrap the roof too??
What is the material you used specifically? Part number would be sweet. Like to do mine but me and alcantara have a storied history of not being all that stretchy so like to use what you guys did.
This suede wasn't very stretchy either. But, I was able to make it work.
What would the prep process be if the headliner had the "cardboard" backing?
You really should suede the sun visors also!!
Nice job, really enjoyed this, and well done doing it on your own 👍
How to suggestion: grow a big bushy beard
Be a beautiful man.
Can you guys do a Porsche 944 build, always wanted one and will be amazing if you guys can😊
Here I was thinking about taking some fabric paint to my headliner, this seems like a better idea!
Looks great, nice job son!
Are u putting in new seats in the sti
Since this was a STI hatch you got there headliner out of the car through the hatch, but how would u get it out in a sedan ?
remove the seats if possible and remove via the back door on an angle
Every car is different. You will need to inspect your particular vehicle and devise a plan. I suspect you can finagle it out one of the rear door openings but might have to remove the seats.
Good job guys! Need some leds in them interior lights
Thats a different video my dude!
Why not dynamat the roof while the headliner was out?
Those grab hands are commonly known as Jesus bars in Australia
😂
How to repaint/tint plastics and reflectors on a vehicle?
Perhaps changing the interior light to led lights. It gives the interior more modern look with the white lights
Thats a different video my dude!
I wonder how it would look if you did the a and b pillar as well with the alcantara that would be sick
I wasn't keen to mess with the potential of modifying the airbag deployment. The new owner can tackle that if he/she so wishes.
I’ve got an 07 Impreza Wagon. The headliner is in good condition and doesn’t sag or anything. That said, I’d like to replace it with darker suede. Do I need to remove the old material and grind off the foam like I see some people do? Or can I just lay it over the material like you did here? Thanks for the help! Love this build!
Flexing the lambo as he does the roofing
Not flexing homie. It's not mine. I was using it as a tri pod though. :-)
Lmao why though its a lambo
That looks daaaannngggg good!!!
Thats what she said never gets old.😂
are you doing suede on the center inserts for the doors, you should it would give it a more complete look
Ours are already suede.
"We're going to wrap our headliner. It's actually pretty easy to do"
*Laughs in Soarer*
Can be done. I swore a lot doing it but it can be done. Thank f$ck for the big doors.
@@skitzvitz Oh I know, just a pain in the ass, haha. Especially because the doors don't open up very wide
I wouldn't say "easy" but after doing a couple the process gets easier
@@sniffer6285 The area around the dome light sucked the most. I felt like I had to either have crinkles in the fabric or pull the fabric so tight, press down in the crevices and just hope the glue would hold. I went for the latter. And nope, it didn't hold. This is for a Z30 Soarer. How did you overcome this?
More how to! 😀
Enjoying the content? Grab some throtl Merch or Car Parts from throtl.com and use code STAYHOME to save some $$$ off your purchase! (Every $1 spent = 1 entry to win this STI hatchback!)
Put sparco seats in it. And sparco seat belts.
found that using a rubber roller same thing used for laying sound deadening works wonders, thank me later!
Looks great. Will you put any nice quality led bulbs in the dome and map lights?
That will be a different video my dude!
Woww nice vedio😀😀😀👌
I really like this WRX it's so amazing I can imagine if it was 2jz swapped 🤔👌👍
If it was 2JZ swapped we wouldn't be giving it away.
Hope he enjoyed his beer
I did. Cheers!
Should wrap the a b and c pillars
will you guys do a full led swap on all the lights of the car?
Already done. It was in a previous video
I should clarify. We did the exterior. The interior will be done next.
You mentioned the recovering process is a little different for older Japanese cars. Do you need to remove existing material before recovering on the older headliners?
Notified and watching
How do you get the material?
Any upholstery shop can sell it to you. It's called foam backed headliner material.
loving the DIY stuff gents
