This would look real good with some lights inside it, way better than a pumpkin. I've never seen a better deathstar before. Simply amazing. The Emperor is very pleased with your work, and wishes to reward you with a wookie bride.
Tell you what I like about your videos...no talk, just great ideas, turning practices that teach, and or course great workmanship. (From a 60something) woodshop teacher )
There is something extra beautiful about the wood grain found in burls. The swoops and swirls add such interest to a simple shape - as does that surprise void in the centre. Beautiful work!
😍Oh dear me, that is awesome, the grain is just beautiful, you've saved a huge chunk of decaying wood and turned it into a wonderful piece of art. It's lovely to see the grain 'pop' when you put the finish on it, I could NEVER part with any of the things you make ! How do you decide which piece goes and which stays ? Andy Thanks again for putting these truly stunning, inspirational videos up. I've been having a very lazy 'Watching Andy Phillip day' and loved every minute of it ! Thanks 😊🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💖
Put a little candle in the middle, fill it with rose leafs etc. and lite the candle, put the top on it and place it in a room: them smell of wood and the rose leafs will fill the room trough the natural occuring holes in the bole. Or just candle for some beautiful light and shadows. That gives a nive atmosphere to any room. I love this piece!
My son has been trying to talk me into doing this as you make it so easy, but even if I could afford the equipment I don't have the artistic eye to make art as this is what you make. I could watch your videos for hours as they are relaxing. I know what you create is not as easy as you make it looks, a lot of time, practice, training, and art goes into what you make. I wish I could afford some of your pieces, truly beautiful pieces Andy.
You certainly created something very nice Andy. For a moment when I saw you probing inside I was beginning to think “change of direction coming up”, but no, you kept at it & the finished product is awesome (I don’t use that word often). Great colour, character & final finish. Fab piece of turning. Well done & thanks for sharing. Regards, Geof
Poor donald, nice work of art. The holes did'nt ruin the piece at all, it makes even look nicer i'd put purple and pink flowers in it. It would look beautiful in my opinion. Keep up the good work
Awesome work Andy! I will be honest though. Seeing so much beautiful wood end up on the floor is always hard for me. Never the less, it's definitely cool...
Thanks Mike ..I agree I looked into getting a corer for this but the inside was pretty messed up and I wanted to keep the piece as big as I could to show off the great looking wood it always amazes me how much waste you get just to get to round .. cheers
Amazing work. Isn't there some way to avoid turning 99% of the wood to dust? Like when hollowing out the piece. It just seems like a shame to waste all that beautiful wood.
Thanks ..I know what you mean it did seem quite a waste ..you can get a bowl saver which scoops out material so you can make multiple bowls from one log .. will have to look into getting one ..cheers
outstanding work again. Love your work. great job. What was the actual time it took to do this peace? I'm having problems with my camera on the floor. Vibration. Is your camera hung from the ceiling?
Thanks Chris .. I think it took about a day and a half .. there was big vibration going on with this, had to take it real steady at first .. I mostly use converted tv brackets that are screwed to the wall and i've converted a gopro mount to go on the end ..you can probably spot them in some of my vids ... cheers
Oopsie doodles -- burls can be just *so* uncooperative... Wonderful recovery, though. Any idea which planets you are going to destroy with it? :-) Clyde
I also asked Andy this same question a couple of months ago. He used a foam camping mat stuck to a wooden disk. I have been using the same idea since also using a foam mat and it works a treat.
Andy Phillip thx for youre quick reaction. Thats a good idea. I need someting like that for finnishing my bowls. Gonna steel your idea and one my own. Greetings maarten

I love turning burls especially the ones that have the eye patterns
Put a little candle in the middle, fill it with rose leafs etc. and lite the candle, put the top on it and place it in a room: them smell of wood and the rose leafs will fill the room trough the natural occuring holes in the bole. Unfreekingly gorgeous!! When it looks like it might be a lemon, turn it into a crown jewel. Again, huge , huge huge congratulations it is marvelous.
Thanks Tara

Bringing the two pieces together like that was awesome! I've been binge-watching all your videos. You are truely amazing. A true craftsman.
That was amazing! To me, the finished product reminded me of The Death Star! Sure a Star Wars fan would love that piece!
Thanks
That's really nice. Love the way ideas change with the surprises burrs have locked away inside them. Thanks as always for sharing.
Thanks Gary .. My heart sank when I came across the void but it worked out ok ..
Brilliant re-think there Andy, that's an exceptional piece of art, keep the vids coming rather watch them than a movie!!
This is absolutely stunning! So, so beautiful xx
😂 OH ISEE WHAT YOU MEAN! That's wonderful. It would be so cool with led lights inside!
I feel like there's a story behind that duck, though 😜💜
I think I may need to sell my sewing machines and buy a lathe. 🙄your work is Fabulous.
LOL ..Thanks Josie

Wow Andy, that is fab! Really lovely grain in that wood. A simple sphere but so interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I spotted almost a cyclone pattern in the wood! Amazing. Your videos relax me, i enjoy watching you work
Thanks Savvas

Thanks Momo
Very good job Andy and exellent finishing

It's a beautiful thing, Andy. A real silk purse from an unpromising sow's ear. Now, cue the Imperial March and light sabre noises.....
Lol ... Thanks man ...
It is an absolute joy to watch you display your God given talent ! I wish I had the cash to buy this ! Thanks for sharing !

Thanks Don ..It had been in a friends back yard for years
AHA, that never happens to me--still trying to find some wood like that!
Straight in with the kill, cutting off Daffy's beak! lol
Beautiful piece, love it. What timber? Elm?
LOL had to stop him quacking !! I think it's Elm ..Thanks Pete
A duck? I thought it was a warthog? Shows my African roots....
@@firefly01 looked to me like a hippo halfway out of the water... same reasoning, though.
"That's no moon..."
Love it but I kept thinking "fill the hole with resin" when it appeared. XD But still good work man.
Thanks Anthony .. i was thinking the same but the wood was cool on its own so thought I'd leave it o naturel ..for now !! Cheers
"That's no duck. It's a space station!"
It certainly freed a bit of room in the shop ..lol ..cheers

nice work as always, did you know that it was particularly hollow?
No I didn't have a clue but i'd planned to make a bowling bowl box but instead of 3 holes i ended up with one big one lol .. Thanks Jessica
where is the duck? beautiful ball
Cheers Adrian ..I cut its beak off at the beginning .. at least I thought it looked like a duck ...lol
Oopsie doodles -- burls can be just *so* uncooperative... Wonderful recovery, though. Any idea which planets you are going to destroy with it? :-) Clyde
I think the duck would want to go for pluto ..lol ..cheers Clyde
Beautiful! Can't hardly see the seam. What wood was that?
Thanks Brian .. I'm not positive but I think its Elm .. cheers
That was so beautiful..i sub'd
Thanks Fifi ..
Very cool, I gota few burls. My lathe isn't big enough to handle them. 😕
Thanks Ronzie .. The lathe could handle it but the shop was trying to shake to bits ..lol
Andy Phillip one day my friend. I'll be showing you all something. 1 more sense I should have it together
Would make a hell of a salad bowl. Just put stuff through the hole and shake.
Cool idea ..might have to do that ..
Beautiful Andy, as per a previous comment what did you use for the material to support the bowl, when reversed turning.
I also asked Andy this same question a couple of months ago. He used a foam camping mat stuck to a wooden disk. I have been using the same idea since also using a foam mat and it works a treat.
Thanks Roger ..
buh-bye duck, hello artificial killer moon in the sky.
Very nice, have any idea what kind of burl this is?
Thankyou .. I think it's Elm but not 100%
Hai andy verry nice death star it is. A question. What is that plate made off whats on the lathe to support the bowl?? Greetings maarten
Thanks Maarten .. It's part of a camping mat glued to piece of mdf ...cheers
Andy Phillip thx for youre quick reaction. Thats a good idea. I need someting like that for finnishing my bowls. Gonna steel your idea and one my own. Greetings maarten
Quack, Quack, Quack, quack, QUAck Quack, quack, QUAck Quack.
LOL ... Don't you mean Quack Quack Quack Quack Quack ...OUCH !!!
ya, from duck to DEATH star, sounds like a painful transformation lol
Glue them together and make a birds nest?
Só eu que me lembrei da Estrela da Morte?
Who put Bella in the Wych Elm?
Uh, what about the Superlaser?
Was expecting to see Howard the Duck... instead see a unique piece emerge... can definitely live with that kind of disappointment lol😊😊
Thanks Katherine
*Gasp* it's as big as a moon. That's no moon *dan* *dan* *dan* *dan* *ti* *dan* *dan* *ti* *dan*. But in all seriousness it looks great.
LOL .. Thanks Guil ..
That's no moon...
Y ese hoyo que.?
That's no wooden bowl
why do you want this bullet? The duck was better
LOL ..
I think you may need some music in your videos
