The Char Q is fun, but if you're looking for some tips, tricks and recipes for the regular gas Q, check out my full video listing! ua-cam.com/users/ChicagoGrillervideos
Here's a tip for you. You want to maximize VALUE to your viewers. This means do not start your video with 90 seconds of crap that I don't care about (things that have no value to viewers). Cut straight to the thing that is in the NAME OF THE VIDEO.
This one little tip will really help your channel. Also, if you're going to beg for likes and subscriptions, do it at the end of a video, after you've provided real value to the viewer. I have unsubscribed from channels that constantly ask me to subscribe. All you have to do is provide value, and people will subscribe on their own. Don't annoy them with BS.
Wow, I had no idea that existed! Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, it was not in production very long! Just from online forums I have seen, it sounds like it cost quite a bit compared to the Weber Go Grill or Kettle.
Thanks for the inspiration! I have a Weber Char Q but I stopped using it because it didn't seem to like lump charcoal. The charcoal pan is so close to the cooking grates that a lump charcoal fire burns very unevenly. I found that the SELEWARE Stainless Steel 304 Lump Charcoal Ash Basket works well in place of the charcoal pan. (I cut off the basket handles so it fits under the cooking grates.) I also made a replacement charcoal grate from a BG14 Briquette Grate, Carbon Steel - 12-1/4" x 20-1/4". I made a cardboard template 13"x14" to fit the grill bottom and cut the new grate to fit with an angle grinder. With the replacement charcoal grate, I can use one or two Weber Char-Baskets for a smaller fire or for offset cooking. I have now switched back to using the Char Q instead of the Jumbo Joe.
I haven’t been using my Char Q much because I find the PQ charcoal grate I am using is too small and limiting. It’s too small for direct grilling, and it doesn’t fit in the bowl well enough to push to one side to create proper zones. I might have to try your suggestion.
Great video as always! I didn't know weber had a charcoal version. That's pretty cool! Thanks again and keep up the great videos :)
Thanks Rob! I don't know how long it was in production, but it wasn't very long.
Great tips. Thank you
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Super! I didn't even think there was such a charcoal Q. Very interesting.
This was a lot of fun to cook on! Thanks for watching!
Congratulations on 1000 subs!
Yes we agree the only way to notice a difference will be to reverse sear it over charcoal so you get lots of time for Smoke to infuse.
Best regards, Chris and William !
Appreciate your support guys! This was a fun one to shoot and I'm looking forward to playing around with this Char Q. Good luck in your search for one of these unicorns!
A Weber Q 1200 and a Weber Char Q in the last two months. This could be the beginning of an addiction. We will know a year from now. LOL!! GREAT JOB as always. CONGRATS on the 1000+!! MUCH DESERVED!! You rule the space.......
Haha well if you see me in a month do a video about a new Q3200 that I picked up on Marketplace again, then you all need to throw me an intervention lol.
Hey Jerry, welldone on the subs and the monitization... great video btw. Thanks for sharing. 🔥🔥🔥👍
Appreciate your support! You’ve been here since near the beginning! 🙏
Congratulations on 1k subscribers Jerry well done . 👌👌
I discovered these a few wks back , I allways though the W was gas . Great video
Thank you! Yeah when I found out these existed, I started looking for one every few weeks. Was lucky to find this one (can't be too picky about the condition of these with how few of them are out there)... had to drive an hour and a half each way to get it.
I hope you keep making videos. The more you make the better they get. I bought my Weber Q last summer and I still have a lot to learn. Ever consider showing tailgating or park grilling?
Appreciate the comments! Yeah it did take a while getting comfortable being in front of a camera. It has been fun and I will definitely keep this up if folks like you keep watching! 📺
Great idea! I will have to do a video when out at a campground or picnic!
Love your channel!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🥰❤️🍀🍄☀️
Congrats on 1,000 subs 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Appreciate that!!! 👍
First of all, big congrats on crossing 1k, wish you thousands more!
I've been thinking seriously buying a Weber Q, but I don't like gas bbqs, so maybe I can also find a 2nd hand here in FB marketplace!
A side by side comparison with gas grill would be great, looking forward to it 👍
Thanks for the review, it's really useful and quite detailed!
Thanks you have been a supporter since near the beginning! Really appreciate it all! Good luck in tour search for a Char Q! This was a really fun one for me. Should be a great summer!
Congratulations from the UK on reaching 1000 subscribers, interesting bit if kit you have there which as far as I'm aware didn't make it across the pond.
Appreciate that. It was really fun to cook on! I think it was only produced for like 2-3 years before it was discontinued. I am not sure if it was sent overseas or not. Maybe not the UK, but wouldn't surprise me if the folks in OZ saw it for a few years too.
Nice piece of nostalgia
From what I have read in online forums, these didn't last because they were relatively expensive - especially compared to the Weber Go Anywhere or Kettle grills.
Q vs Q? That'll be very interesting 😆. Good job👍.
Sounds like a great excuse to eat two steaks :-)
If I go down to store usually east European and get vinegar with at least 8% acidity n steep your rusted iron grate in this high acid white vinegar over night it will remove rust. This assumes its cast iron . Put vinegar in large plastic box big enough to submerge your cast iron pieces . Then next day wash n coat with oil n cook in bbq for an hour
Congratulations 🎉!
Thank you! You've been a long time supporter and I appreciate that!
@@ChicagoGriller I enjoy being just that!!! Keep on creating!
Wow!! 16k and 3 years later. Congratulations
Thank you! It has been fun watching this channel slowly grow. Creeping up to 20k soon enough!
Congrats on the milestone! Never knew there was a charcoal version but now I want one 😆
Also if you soak the wood chips in water it will smoke but won’t burn up ;)
Thanks! Haha yes that is what happened to me. Once I found out these existed I had started searching for used ones online. They don’t come around often!
Good tip on the wood chips! A bit of a charcoal rookie error there! 😇
Actually, soaking them just causes them to steam before they burn up. By the time they dry out enough to smoke, your food is done.
@@robrobbins4906put the wood under the coals. You want the smoke to.get burned through the fire.
@@thirstbuster78 Never heard of putting the wood chips/chunks UNDER the coals. What do you do on a slow cook when you need to add more wood? Remove all of the coals, place the wood, and then return the coals?
When cooking your steak bring to room temperature before cooking press salt n black pepper into both sides. Melt pure Irish butter dip steaks into it n place in bbq n cook to your liking 🔥
Sounds delicious!
Soak the charcoal tray in vinegar. Will take the rust off. Then after every use, brush off the tray and then spray with pan. No rust issues. Same with the grates. Soak in vinegar to get rid of the current rust. Then spray with pam. After each use, use a stainless steel painter's brush to clean. Then spray with pam. Before use, just spray a paper towel with pam and wipe grates to clean and oil. This will lessen any issues you have with rust and cleaning. If you let stuff just sit, then you will have rust issues.
One year later and I haven't done a full and proper cleaning / restoration on this grill. I am looking to do a more thorough job on it when it warms up here. Thanks for the recommendations.
I just found/purchased a Char Q, used less that 5 times. With the folding cart. The grill still has the original Velcro strap. In virtually brand new condition. So excited to use it, for this grill is kind of a unicorn. The fellow I got it from kinda has a Weber collection, so much so he should open a museum. 😂
Great videos, really enjoying them!!
Wow what a great find! I'm curious, did you end up buying from a guy near Boston? There's someone up there who runs a Facebook Forum but yes I understand he has like 40 Weber Qs.
@@ChicagoGriller He lives in Menasha, Wi. And actually has a few more Weber gems posted on FB marketplace currently. First name is Tom, great guy.
This Char Q presentation was terrific - please do a side-by-side comparison between the Char-Q and the Weber-Q. We posses a Weber baby Q and the Weber "Go Anywhere" charcoal grill and they both have their strength and finer points. The baby Q is for home use while the Go Anywhere is for camp cooking.
Thanks! I wish it were in better shape and I do need a wire wheel on a corded drill to really work on that rust. But indeed am very lucky to even find this. A side by side cook is in the works!
you coaxed me into buying a weber q, thanks chicago griller 🙂
I'm glad! It is a super versatile and capable grill. Here in the USA I don't think it gets the love that it deserves.
Got mine at the end of the grilling season 2019 brand new in the box 140.00 with free shipping also on facebook marketplace.
Oh wow new in box?!?! You are truly lucky! I’ve heard of people paying this much for used!!!
Always wanted one of these. Shame Weber discontinued it. They never come up for sale on eBay.
Soak the wood for 1/2 hour before adding it to the fire. It will also smoke longer if you loosely wrap the wood in foil to keep the flame from touching the wood.
I've never really found soaking wood chips to make that big of a difference, but wrapping it loosely in foil is a good idea. It's what I do on the gas grill so why not the charcoal. Great tip!
@@ChicagoGriller Soaked wood will still burn, it just lasts longer than dry wood. The goal as you know, is to get smoke into the food.
No pictures of the steak itself?? :( Good overview thanks!
so from a very newbie perspective: is there no way to use Qx000/Qx200 with charcoal? say, removing the gas tube and adding a charcoal tray? I guess the design is not prepared to have a complete enclosure to control the burn from oxygen alone but I wonder if anything, that removing the tube and adding a tray would be enough to add some charcoal and use it as an old fashion grill right? very curious if anyone has ever tried it though it sounds like sacrilege hah
Hey great videos..
I have the baby q1000, can I buy the side plates to use for plates, forks and clip them on ? Any tips?
I believe you can buy the side tables separately off the Weber accessories site and attach them to the Q100. If you are in Australia there is also a third party site that makes their own version as well. Kaon or Koan I think?
@chicagoGriller, Cool video on the Char Q. I have one myself since many years and indeed the charcoal plate needs to be replaced. Can you tell me where you got the grill plate you use in the video? I'm in Europe, but if I start my search randomly I do not find it. I find a few but without the handles on yours.
So the charcoal grate use is the PK Grills Charcoal Grate. Here is the product on the US Amazon site: amzn.to/43Pe7fQ
Hopefully you can find something similar on the UK or other European sites.
Thanks! Found it on a Dutch site.
Soak grill grates in vinegar for a day or two wire brush off.white vinegar
Good tip! That's what I did but it was still quite stubborn. I am going to have to probably get a wire cup crush and a cordless drill to really work at it.
Thanks for the video, very informative. Quick question: are you going to install a Weber temperature gauge on the lid?
I haven't done it yet, but it would be a worthwhile upgrade!
@@ChicagoGriller
Looking forward to it
I found one for 30 euros! Can't wait to try it cause i'm having trouble keeping my q2000 from going over 110c.
Wow that is a great find! I hope it is in nicer shape than mine! My charcoal grate is pretty trashed so I am using a PK charcoal grate. It doesn't have quite the same coverage area so I'm somewhat limited in what I can grill on my Char Q. Enjoy yours!!!
@@ChicagoGriller looks like it. I'm picking it up tomorrow.
I'll also be using it for slow roasts and indirect heat like picanha so even if i have to change some parts it should be fine.
ok....question sir....who says we can't take the burner tube out and throw that basket in and make a quickie charcoal grill?
This is a good question.... but I am not sure I would recommend it. You'd probably only want to do this on a grill that is near the end of its service life, as this process probably wouldn't be reversible. You'd want to remove all the gas and electric components (starter, regulator, etc). I'm also not sure how good the airflow would be because of the gaps on the side of the lid that you can't adjust. If you can't find a CharQ, you are probably just better off - and safer - with a Weber Go Anywhere or Kettle.
you could use the weber baskets instead
Omg, haven't seen that grill in a long time.
I will say this Char Q is gonna be really fun to mess around with this spring and summer!
@@ChicagoGriller Absolutely, one idea is move the charcoal tray to one side and then only put one cast iron grate on the other side and you can try to do indirect cooking. You then can add more charcoal and wood....see what happens and #BBQqqqqqqqq
Yup that's the plan of how I think I am going to mainly use this grill - hot and cold zones. Really looking forward to that!
@@ChicagoGriller I saw one for sale locally years ago but passed on it....
Since the charcoal grate is still structurally sound, no reason to not use it as the rust is just cosmetic and shouldn't affect its function; if you do remove the rust, it'll just rust come back again especially as high heat accelerates the oxidation process. However, it'll eventually rust out and won't be usable. Also with the original cast iron grills, it looks like the porcelain coating has worn off but if you oil them after use, it should keep the rust at bay. Cast iron has been used for centuries without issue.
Great tips! I haven't yet taken a wire wheel on a corded drill to really get to work on the charcoal grate rust, but it sounds like that's a bit of a pointless exercise.
I have a natural gas Webber Q but I moved to an area with no natural gas... Think I can convert mine to charcoal?
I'm not sure a gas to charcoal conversion is possible. There are a couple of things: 1) you will want to make sure you remove any gas & electrical - like the burner tube regulator, and starter. But then there is a problem there is you will have holes in the sides of your cook box. Maybe you then build a heat shield to cover those holes. 2) the lid is different in that you'd need the air vents on top and no air vents on the side. I'm sure there are ways to do it, but it would not be easy. Anyways, thank you for watching!
Congrats Jerry .... as long as you keep them coming, we'l keep watch them !!
(Check out your e-mail)
Hi Francois, thank you for the note and the helpful tips! I'll reply to your message there :-)
You got to have enough time on there to get smoke rings on the meat
I read somewhere that if you soak the chips before use they last longer - or maybe I imagined it 🙄
This is what I've heard too, but there is some mixed messaging on that. Some people will say yes it makes them last longer, but it's just because those chips are steaming, and not actually smoking.
