Two main problems here: first, something isn’t right with the brakes. On pretty much every MRL (machine room-less) lift ever, the main brakes take the form of an electromagnetic clutch on the main pulley which the motor is attached to. It sounds like the brakes weren’t coming off properly. This mechanism is also why you will hear a semi-loud clunk when the lift starts and stops. It’s completely normal to hear this and they all do it. It works exactly the same way as the air conditioner on your car. When the electromagnet engages, the clutch plates are squeezed together which allows the entire assembly to turn, otherwise it disconnects. If there’s something wrong with the clutch assembly and it’s sticking on, which is something that might happen when a contact in the contractor that controls it welds itself shut, it can do things in the exact manner described. The controller thinks it’s off, but it’s not. The next thing is that the lift hit its final limit. In the top and bottom of every shaft, there are four mechanical switches. First slowdown, second slowdown, normal limit, and final limit. The first two switches tell the controller that it’s nearing the end of its run, and to start slowing down. Once it hits the normal limit, that is where it should stop in order to be nice and level with the top or bottom floor. However, a bit beyond the normal limit, is the final limit. Under no circumstance is the lift ever allowed to touch it. If it does, this basically signals to the controller that something is very wrong, jam on brakes and cut power now. Once it hits the finals, the controller shuts down and the lift will not move again until a mechanic comes out and resets it. You can press buttons and play with keys as much as you want, you can put the thing into fire service if you want, once it’s dead, it’s dead.
No. The final switch is not the absolute last. Theres one more overtravel switch, that does a "shunt trip" basically energizes a trip input on the elevator's main breaker. Once this trips, elevator is dead, everything is black. Then the elevator will behave as its a power outage. What I know firemans switch SHOULD allow the elevator to move. This is why it won't allow selection of any other floor than ground floor. Basically, the elevator is in lockout, but this shouldn't hinder fire service, so if firemans switch is turned, it should allow the firemen to take manual control of elevator. What I understand if firemen turn firemen switch and hold door close button, elevator should move to ground floor as that is selected. Or you as firemen need to "jog" the elevstor out of overtravel switch using the manual up/down ride buttons in firemens panel, to reenable. It might be that once you leave firemens mode, the elevator will lock out again (as it "remembers" having hit a overtravel switch) and will need to be cleared by a elevator technician. (Basically, you can't reset the elevator to normal operation by turning firemen to RESET, it will just lock down again).
I think when it malfunctioned and went up past the floor when you hit 1 at the end, the elevator probably hit the final limit switch causing it to break to the point where it wouldn't close or do anything else.
This elevator has a major problem (press 1 - 3 - 2 door close) this elevator is messd up (press door close - 3) it doesn´t work ....ah yes, it won´t move but let´s try again... are we stuck ? Woooohooowww ( press door close....) and so on. Wow. I´m impressed. But maybe the elevator is broken.... :-P He needed almost 8 minutes to accept using the staircase....
That clunk you hear from the machineroom, or motor in this case, seen as ecodiscs are mostly MRL, is the brakes coming off, but in this case they immediately got on again and broke down the lift
Some possible causes of the fail are that the safety chain was broken somehow, maybe one of the doors wasn't properly closed. When it stopped at the top most floor, it must have overtravelled, striking the overtravel limit switch. A professional should be able to sort it out easily.
Okay, if I were you, I would have called building management immediately. Someone could have easily gotten stuck in that thing, and the jolts and the over-leveling show that something is really wrong with that elevator. When an elevator is malfunctioning that badly, it becomes a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Anyway, still a wonderful testament to KONE quality.
Overreacting on a broken lift.. Even people here in the comments about horror movies and stuff. You won't die in there. Just notify the reception or so and it will get fixed.
Elevators aren't much different than cars. They require maintenance, and occasionally parts will be bad from a supplier. It's possible this elevator is being serviced by a completely different company (so not Kone's fault a repair hasn't been done), the repair isn't covered by warranty (so the building owner would have to pay to fix), or quote honestly, the maintenance team hasn't stopped in yet to know there is an issue. Instead of getting on the elevator, and freaking out when you were stuck...why not just call the Kone customer service line and report a problem? It may not be your responsibility, but what is the point of the video? Is it to just trash a company that may or may not be aware of an issue or is it to make sure others don't get stuck?
@@wendysteele4508 Some good points you made there. However I encountered several lifts like and most of them has the same logic controller (LCE CPU 40) which is a easy logic to use if you done alot of research on it. But the thing is however this lift or as you guys call it an elevator reacted I think all the lift needed was a reset because what I see from the lift the lift just attempted to relevel and though it wasn't aline with the floor (hence why it did with the doors open) It's happened to me before and all I did was reset it, shut the doors by hand and used the inspection panel on the logic controller cabinet on the top floor, enabled Inspection and then drove the lift down a bit and put it into service again and then wait for the lift to shoot to the buttom floors and eventually find it's position and then it will run like nothing has happened to it. I don't think it would be hard for any maintenance company to diagnose and fix it and yes anyone can try and call a maintenance company to come and fix it. get it fixed.
Notice how near the end of the video when Jim tries to get the elevator to work the door a hold button lights up automatically by itself twice, I wonder if the thing was trying to reprogram itself.

I think the brake is defective. First, it probably tried to move with the brakes still applied. Then the brake probably didn’t engage at the right time, therefore it hit the final limit and won’t do anything until someone manually resets it.
Sounds like it tries to move and it trips out one of the relays which is why you hear a bang. And the motor is locked up so when it tries to move, it can't so you hear the buzzing of the motor trying to move the car.

Programming and Elevators By ElectricalDistorter That elevator seriously needed help... I wonder how it’s running now in 2019, but when this was filmed it was in bad shape... If you look closely at 5:31, you notice how the doors move slowly open, meaning the elevator slowly opened its doors, then the controller shut off. The elevator didn’t entirely lose power otherwise the fan and buttons would’ve turned off, as well as the indicator. But the door hold button flashed at 7:03 probably indicating the elevator was out of service. On some KONE elevators (I think UK ones), there is a red text at the bottom saying “OUT OF SERVICE”, but I’m not sure. At a mall near where I live, there is a KONE KSS 370 elevator in Macy’s just like this, but it’s hydraulic, 2 floors, and non-scenic. The elevator has some leveling problems. I recently visited there and it took 15 SECONDS to level while going up, but only 3 going down. And that’s not all. It also re-levels a lot when it stops. Anyway, to conclude this, I think the elevator is just going through a tough time and hopefully is working well now, because it sure looks nice.
Probably something to do with the display showing that its in firefighters mode, and you don't have the key, this is a bit special and it means that the public shouldn't be able to use the elevator. except to floors with designated exits, like an emergency exit on the top level, or the ground floor with a public exit, It's in a firefighter mode designed to save your life when there's a fire. Why it is in that mode I cannot tell. That's usually related to the owner of the building and their building management team.

I'll guess that it's a KSS 370. This is because of the floor indicator, which looks like the KSS 300, except, it has a dot matrix indicator instead of a 7-segment indicator
That elevator needs major maintenance so it could remain functional. I personally wouldn't want to get stuck inside an elevator and have a feeling that it could free fall
The only 2 times an elevator has malfunctioned on me were: 1st time: at the shopping mall in Aschaffenburg. I was on my way to my car, other people wanted to get off earlier, but the elevator stopped on the floor, but the doors were stuck. I tried the button, which didn't work. Then I tried to slide the door open, which caused a loud "CLACK!" and then the door opened very slowly and everyone but me got off. I managed to fix the elevator, even though I'm not an elevator technician. My guess was that the door locking mechanism was malfunctioning. 2nd time: at an underground car parking garage in Würzburg. I rode the elevator in order to see, if it worked properly, which it didn't. It had another door issue. I went down to -1, and the door couldn't open. But it closed again, and I went back up to the ground floor, where the door worked properly. Then I walked down the stairs to -1, where the door was malfunctioning, and called the elevator from there, but the door was still malfunctioning. I tried to slide the door open, hitting the mechanism in the process and then called the elevator again. And then the door started working properly again.

Biggest lift fail for me was when I called it and the display said I was coming up from lg then after 15 seconds(it's average travel time) and it didnt open nor did the indicator change thankfully it came after a second call
it moves up to release the brake then goes down so it probably overleved and moved up to release brake then hit limit switch or with the synchronize motor it was jolting to sync the phases
AIVideos The EcoDisc should only jolt and snap to phase only when in manual, and being controlled by the cartop controls. It shouldn't (or rarely should) Snap to phase in normal service.
ive heard this sound before on a different elevator same thing happend it would'nt go up or down and its just the brakes sticking because i got access to the motor room
looks like it was a motor issue with the controller and motor its trying to move with the brakes still engaged causing the shuttering as it tries to pull thru the brakes then the controller does wierd and over travels and shuts down thing needs help hope to see a retake of this one this year
This is why Kone will forever be my least favorite elevator company. My sister's work building has kone ecodiscs that are in horrible condition and keep breaking down. Also Floridian Elevators filmed at a brand new hotel in North Carolina and the elevators there were horrible as well
i was in a kone elevator today. i called it and it came. As I went in it jumped. (I don't know if it was re-leveling Then an out of service flashed up but then it started moving normally. Could this be logic/controller problem?

2nd time: at an underground car parking garage in Würzburg. I rode the elevator in order to see, if it worked properly, which it didn't. It had another door issue. I went down to -1, and the door couldn't open. But it closed again, and I went back up to the ground floor, where the door worked properly. Then I walked down the stairs to -1, where the door was malfunctioning, and called the elevator from there, but the door was still malfunctioning. I tried to slide the door open, hitting the mechanism in the process and then called the elevator again. And then the door started working properly again.
I don’t wanna ride this.
Proceeds to ride it up and down multiple times.
How have you been lately? I haven’t even heard from you in so long!
@@JimLiElevators I’ve been great. I think you still have my number but if you don’t text me, 4802779265! I’ll delete this comment after you text lol.
@@TransitAndTeslas No not anymore. Anyways…wait, how did I happened to have your phone number before? I don’t think I even remember meeting you at all face-to-face other than just me seeing your channel.
@@JimLiElevators Probably through Hanny or Patrick.
This is definitely a pretty messed up elevator! I think they should've chosen ThyssenKrupp instead. Great video as always and hopefully they fixed this by now.
I recently rode a really bad thyssenkrupp elevator. It jolts when going up, its slow, it sounds like it low on oil, etc.
It doesn't matter what brand it is, if it's not maintained, they will have problems in the future.
Biggest lift fail for me was when I called it and the display said I was coming up from lg then after 15 seconds(it's average travel time) and it didnt open nor did the indicator change thankfully it came after a second call
Screw solid state electronic controllers! Relay logic FTW!!!!
That is what happens when you ride a broken lift?!
Hey, this elevator is next to my favorite restaurant! :D. And jeez. Talk about Krappy cheapness of a KONE.
I know!!! Right?
@@JimLiElevators from what I know, outside america Kones are pretty good. To be honest elevators seem worse in US.
Such a nice elevator but it’s really malfunctioning
I don’t think I would’ve stepped in it lol
at 7:03 it started flashing it could mean DL aka door lock or it could be NIS out of service
I would complain to the building owner about that, that is a major safety hazard. should be fixed immediately!
It probably hit the final limit switch when it jolted up.
it moves up to release the brake then goes down so it probably overleved and moved up to release brake then hit limit switch or with the synchronize motor it was jolting to sync the phases
EDIT: or mabye its the emergency brakes
I don’t think I want to ride it anymore ''gets back on''
looks like it was a motor issue with the controller and motor its trying to move with the brakes still engaged causing the shuttering as it tries to pull thru the brakes then the controller does wierd and over travels and shuts down thing needs help hope to see a retake of this one this year
This is why Kone will forever be my least favorite elevator company. My sister's work building has kone ecodiscs that are in horrible condition and keep breaking down. Also Floridian Elevators filmed at a brand new hotel in North Carolina and the elevators there were horrible as well
I used to live in Sugarland Texas.
That’s Kone for ya.
Kone elevators are pretty good though.
The elevator so messed up I hope it's fixed
Georgef551 would love this elevator.
This sounds like there are problems with the motor moving
i was in a kone elevator today. i called it and it came. As I went in it jumped. (I don't know if it was re-leveling Then an out of service flashed up but then it started moving normally. Could this be logic/controller problem?
My idea of an epic elevator fail.
Lift goes crazy with floor and goes up and down
His idea of an epic elevator fail,
And elevator that doesn't move
Edit: says I don't won't to ride this no more!
*continues to ride it up and down*
Great video brother! Epic fail for sure sadly! How is this elevator doing now? Is it working or it's still broke?
I’m sure it’s working fine now.
@@JimLiElevators That's great to hear! Jim, Have you heard of Quintana, TX before? Down by Freeport and Lake Jackson?
Whoa How Did STOP That Broken
this elevator over leveled more! holy Christ

Nesta Brown's Brother: This elevator needs fixtures installed properly. I no wonder why done this going be stuck first place, huh?? 😐
Someone needs to call a repair company!!!!
I think its stopped there if its not used in a while, then it starts working!
