I have used it twice to field fabricate scratch built replacement plastic parts from HDPE cutting boards, but a jigsaw blade would have worked fairly well there as well. A number of the recent Leatherman releases have had some 'weird' tool layouts (eg. large file on outside?). I've said it for some time - Leatherman need to offer a custom build service where they might offer different tool options for a select number of frame options. The file was the right choice in my opinion. Me personally I NEVER use the saw on my surge. I use the file regularly whether it be scraping off the corrosion on battery connectors in cars, or just smoothing off a piece of wood I’m whittling, or smoothing off sharp edges on pieces of metal around the shop. And the serrated blade is just not that big of an advantage if you know how to sharpen a knife. The only real advantage to leatherman’s serrated edge is the safety tip I’ll give it that for sure. But I rarely use the serrated edge for anything that the regular edge won’t do just as well as long as you keep it sharp. Having a thumb hole on the side of the file near the base is a terrible idea. You put pressure on a file sideways, and that pressure is greatest at the end of the file closest to the tool because that’s how leverage works, so having a thumb hole there greatly impacts the integrity of the tool which would lead to much greater potential of the file snapping off. This isn’t a problem for the knife because you apply pressure to the edge and it’s absorbed by the spine. First responders already have a tool that’s designed specifically for them, it’s the raptor by leatherman, and if they need something plier based, the surge or the signal would do just fine. I personally grabbed the curl because I got tired of carrying the surge every day. I decided it was just too bulky, I carry it with the pocket clip, and I have to carry it in the pocket with my phone because I carry a gun in my other pocket. So I needed something slimmer and lighter for my edc. The reason I picked the curl over the wave, is that it comes with a pocket clip already in place, and it has the awl whereas the wave does not, and I really like the awl. I use it as a scraping tool, I use it to poke holes, and occasionally I’ve even used it to do some very ugly leather work. And it’s $30 cheaper so there’s that too. Overall I really like the way the curl is set up. I really wish they would make it so that the bond could be carried with a pocket clip, now that would really be awesome.
I'd replace that file with some larger scissors like on the Wingman, add a lock to the bit driver and replaceable wire cutters and this thing would be a winner in my book! I think the serrated blade would have made more sense. My problem with the wave is the pos pocket clip and the blow on it and it breaks jewlers drivers.
Inexplicable remixes and gimmicks are typical of Leatherman’s nowadays, and trying to pick one is a convoluted process of compromises. Surge for all purpose, excellent in every way, but very heavy. Wave for medium size all purpose. P4.. the exception to Leatherman’s random remixes… its not perfect, but its a genuinely innovative medium duty - ie lighter/smaller than Surge - tool that has all the best versions of the primary/required tools plus its all one-handed opening. P4, Yes, with scissors, awl, and chisel and package opener, etc., it seems comparable to Victorinox Spirit X, but only the saw and file are too short to be very useful.
I think the price makes sense more or less, the pocket clip and one hand opening, and bit driver is worth 10$ more than the rebar. And it makes sense that its 20 less than a wave because its only really missing the serrated blade and the saw. And its a bit more compact and lightweight also.
Thanks, that was helpful. I have several Leatherman tools and my hands-down favorite is the Sidekick. Not too heavy for pocket carry and the tools I use. i use the saw far more often than I expected.
@@henryvandeventer2457 I bought a 2nd Sidekick and then my partner down in Houston got caught up in Hurricane Harvey and about lost everything. I sent him my extra Sidekick because I thought he needed it more than I did. It's not "the best," but I carry it more than my other tools.
Agree with you regarding the file. As far as the Wave's in-house, sold-separately clip; never had that issue with it. I installed it once on my older LM Wave (non-replaceable wire cutters), have never taken it off since. The weight difference between the Wave + and the Curl, sorry; one ounce difference when we're talking 7 vs. 8 ounces just isn't enough to really be noticeable in a pocket. The Curl to me is a mystery. Wave + vs. Curl, I'd rather pay the extra $20.oo for a more capable multi-tool and buy the clip for the Wave + from LM. I was seriously considering the Curl. But the only negative to sticking with my older clip-carried Wave is literally one ounce. Thanks for saving me $80.oo
I don't own any as of yet. So far I've narrowed it down to the Rebar and possibly a Wave. I definitely would not buy this one because of the tool layout, not much use for a file, give me a locking saw blade instead, and price point.
I agree with William. The Rebar is a great choice and is near bombproof. Great balance of price/function. Also depends on what you need and want. If you want a knife blade that's one handed opening then the Rebar is not for you, but if you want a very versatile, capable and tough as nails tool at a good price point, it's great.
I like the direction they went with this one -- Wave is a great tool but a bit of a brick in the pocket, the clip does hang up on heavier work pants,, and also that eyeglass driver is a bit cringe in my opinion. Slimming it down to the Curl is a fine idea. You still get that beautiful blade profile and the Free-series clip is 1000x better (also screwed in so it doesn't wiggle). The wave/curl file is awesome and should not be overlooked as a valuable outdoors tool vs a tiny wood saw -- the diamond side is plenty capable of touching up heavier edged tools and the double-cut side can be used to do many woodcraft chores that a saw can't. That being said, I recently downsized my Rebar to a Bond (same idea as Wave to Curl) and I can't complain at all. If they add a pocket clip to Rebar I'll size up again but for me that Free-series clip is a game-changer. Also, the Curl and Bond are using the old Wave pliers head. Even without replaceable cutters, that was the best selling Leatherman of all time.
Supertool 300 is my heavy duty workhorse for home and work. The Rebar is my go to for camping/hiking.. Why Leatherman continues with the 2d phillips head on their "heavy duty" options is beyond comprehension. I was thinking when I saw the title the two big mistakes with the curl might have been; 1. Leatherman put it into production; 2. people are buying it.
I have seven Leatherman tools two of them are wave Pluss fkn awesome tools also have heaps of others blue point, two Gerber's and some cheaper ones not I carry a wave Pluss every day and to be fair I use the file every day! I'm an aircraft engineer and just am lost without it I also carry a skeletool cx when in shorts out of work or a suit review cheers dude 🤠🇦🇺
I personally like the file on my multitools. I also like the wood saw but the file gets more use filing of burs on my machete, sharpening fish hooks, doing my nails, cleaning up notches for traps and triggers, etc. They should put a fine tooth metal saw on the edge of the file to make it more versatile since you can saw wood (and bone) with a metal saw but not vice versa. I don't need the scissors or the one hand opening blade and with this bit exchanger I'm always scared the bit gets lost. If you drop that bit in the mud good luck finding it back. I prefer the solid philips head like on the Rebar and Bond and they also take a normal bit adapter. I do like the pocket clip though but you can buy them separately. The one hand opening and locking blade is not illegal in my country but I travel a lot and you never know how customs or the police are gonna react in other countries. Even if it's technically not illegal by their laws what are you gonna do if they confiscate it anyway? I do understand there are professions where having a one hand opening blade is very useful.
You know what's crazy, I was thinking about how it would be great if Leatherman scaled up the PS4 Squirt, and I think the Curl is just that! It has everything I need daily. I love it!
Leatherman knows how many people want an Awl on their Wave or Charge. This is their answer. This tool is all about the Awl. Just got one yesterday, as I own every other model in the last 20 years. My new EDC multi...at least for the moment.
The wave is set up the same way, I use the file all the time, and I think a thumb stud would just be in the way. Really sounds like your looking for something to complain about.
Bring back the Leatherman Squirt EL!!! I would by 3!!! Also, I wish I could put the mini screwdriver back in place of the small flathead in the Surge!!! Keep up the great vids!!!
I like this one a d might pick it up. I really like how its similar to the wave but smaller and lighter. Why i dont carry my wave as much. I kinda wish they pit a large saw on the outside instead of the large file and put a small file in the inside instead of the prybaror bottle opener
I picked up the curl over the weekend ,I agree with you on the file maybe swap it with a wood saw. But the selling point for me was the interchangeable bit tool on it and with the ratcheting bit driver extension it's exactly what I was looking for . But to each their own. Still a good tool if you ask me.
Honestly if you tossed the file for a saw it would be everything I have wanted in a multi tool. Every model is always missing something. Three things I need/ want, saw, scissors and awl. Wave no awl, rebar no scissors. I find the surge to big for daily carry. Swap that file for a saw and they’d really have something spot on there. Excellent video as always btw.
I'm personally fine with my sidekick (goes in my bugout bag but I carried it for a while before I got my Surge) and I bought one for my Dad and Brother. I do want a Rebar because of the compact size and Replaceable wire cutters is awesome as I do a lot of welding at work and the eore cutters get a work out everyday.
i kinda like this Curl. i am looking for something to replace my Gerber Suspension. inside house i carry this or Squirt PS4. Suspension is good enough but it lack a larger blade. also loke the fact its equipped with that file. outside i use a set of Black&Silver Surge with alot of accessories, around 650grams. thanks dor the review, from what i see its what i need right now. i owned SwissTool and SkeletoolCX, gave it to my brother.
Eyes on files are not a good idea. An open eye loop is less surface area for filing, since you use the flat part instead of the edge like a knife or saw.
There's a new company that's coming out and they have a fully customizable multi tool. Their called Goat tools. Maybe something to look into.. Great video buddy! Thanks!
I agree, when I first saw the curl my reaction was.....meh, I don't mind a file but why not make it removable, I've been saying for years, you have a dull blade and a file right next to it, makes no sense to me.
I hear your concerns , but the curl is perfect for my needs.👍 something about it reminds me of the stuff i had when i was a kid. Great Video love the honesty. RC
I like the Curl from what I see. I got the Wave+ a couple years ago and never liked it. Got a Charge+and love it. I’d take serrated off the my Wave and swap it onto the Curl. The file is the right choice for me also. The awl is welcome. I’d remove the can opener and put the eye glass driver maybe back. Maybe swap the plier heads also if the replaceable cutters are better.
as a “tool box”, metal file/metal saw is ideal at least for me. I expect metal work capabilities and tool aspects as a compact tool box on my body. I don’t use wood saw at the place where I need screw drivers and pliers. wood saw is handy, but I can cut wood with knife blade. nothing can do the same job with metal file/saw.
Personally after spending hours looking through their line up and watching dozens of reviews I decided that the Surge was the best all rounder. The only downside is that it's heavy. Apart from that it's an excellent sturdy tool and in conjunction with the new ratcheting bit driver and the bit set it's got everything I need.
G'day Aaron, yep with ya, for sure a perfect spot for a locking saw rather than a file. And no saw at all is definitely a deal breaker IMO. Seems a bit like change for changes sake. If I were to ever go down the "multitool" track, I'd spend the extra on the wave + or surge, over say a rebar, mainly because the blades and saw are on the outside layer. Cheers Duke.
If they put the saw and serrated and made it a alternative versión of the wave plus with an awl instead of the micro screwdriver. That would make it a success.
I love my wave, it's still the best multi tool out there. It doesn't make sense to me to pick up the curl. I wish all leatherman's came with a pocket clip.
I agree if they swapped the file for the wood saw and dropped the price that little bit it would be a lot more viable. I love my wave and will probably stay with that model.
I'd have much preferred a larger pair of scissors take the place of that file, and then do something else (like the Wave's small second bit driver) where the little internal scissors are.
Yes to both if I’m honest. I use the scissors at work a fair bit, mainly for shortening labels from a label printer. I also use the bottle opener/ can opener a couple times a week to open a beer, mainly because I tend to have a MT in my pocket.
@@timosborne8174 nice to know, I live in Australia so most beers are screw tops so no need for a bottle opener, just seems everything I can use scissors for I can use the knife for! I’d much rather see an additional bit driver so I can carry 4 bits without the additional bit kit Big question is…when will leatherman offer a custom build option
@@benhazell470 yeah I’m in the UK and still most beers need an opener. At least the ones I drink. It seems so many people buy more than one tool to custom themselves. If I’m honest I prefer the Gerber multitools but it’s the same problem. I’ve had to use multiple tools to make my perfect tool.
Perhaps the quality is greater in the Curl (?), but the features seem to be more like the Sidekick or Wingman than the Wave or Rebar that you mention...except the pricing of the Sidekick and Wingman are less than the Curl and the Rebar.
Yeah, not sure how many fingernails I have busted using those nail nicks on different mutitools. Agreed the file and the pricepoint seems kinda odd for this tool. Thank you for the no BS review with the pros and cons of the hardware. Great video!
Curl is for me, I love that file and was using it daily on my old Wave. Due to size and weight I'm now Skeletool user. But Curl is overpriced for sure.
I agree with everything you said I have and I like the idea but it could have been something much better. Suppose they had done the Surge this way with a main blade and the t shank adapter and left the locks but only had a bit driver on one side and an awl on the other. That would have been pocketable and almost perfect for me.
A wood saw on this makes little sense to me. They already have a outdoor focused model the signal so to make this a outdoor focused tool would be redundant and not a smart marketplace idea.
The fact that the Phillips head screw driver has no lock is not good. Bearing down on a half stripped screw and having it slam shut on your finger could ruin your day. Lol. I will stick with my old heavy clumsy Wave.
The wave + was the last leatherman I have bought and even though I am a Gear junkie I see no need to buy another leatherman. It seems they have run out of ideas.
Good review, been curious about this since it was a bit of a surprise when it released. Does edcing it pretty much feel pretty much comparable to a wave? Or would you say the weight saving is rather noticeable?
Thanks for the video and information about this model. I suppose I'm a dinosaur as I still use the original issue Leatherman tool. Hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it, right?😉
If they would of make a p4 with no scissor and add a diamond file to it and the bit driver that for me would be the ideal leatherman and 154cm blade steel
Mistake 3 - Using 420HC as the blade steel. Even in 2021, 420HC is hugely subpar. Dedicated folding knives at $20-30 are running much better steel. They should at least be using Sandvik steel here.
Most of the "added" tools on the newer Leathermans seem gimmicky to me. Yes there are some improvements...but I wish they would always churn out the original super tool so I can get a replacement when I wear one out or lose one in some epic tragedy. The original has all I ever need for quick tasks... if I need a real tool I have a trailer full of them and I don't have to carry all the weight. For my money the only real improvement is not gripping the sharp edges of the original
The file should have just simply been a saw imo. I'm surprised your critique of the file though...it's literally the same way a the file and saw deploy on a wave 🤨. Do you hate that on the wave+ as well? Your dead on about the price for sure. As far as the rebar plier being more robust...it's not actually true, born out in a culmination of data based on breaks. The replacement cutter plier head break more regularly than the non-replacement variant. This is not to say that the decrease in durability isn't worth the replacement cutters...because the replacement cutters are great.
I totally disagree but still appreciate your take on this video. I am a mechanic, so I pretty much need a file on my multitool. I plan on getting this model down the road. I don't agree with all the criticism of Leatherman from so many people these days. What more do people want? They have been the leader in innovation for years (look at how everbody else has copied all their designs). I feel bad that they put all the money into the design and testing and development and they get so much criticism. Plus, countries like China, that don't respect patent law, or intellectual property make billions of leatherman knockoffs...what a sad state of affairs. Lastly, you have so many guys that just abuse the tool and take advantage of Leatherman's excellent warranty....thanks for letting me rant 😉👍
I always love and respect your videos. I own many different Leatherman's (posters, please don't respond with "Leathermen") and I like the placement of the file. I use it a lot, and it is in a space that makes it easily accessible. If you change the opening method like the one you state, that would minimize the surface area of the tool, thus reducing the efficacy of it's design. As for the price point, I fully agree.
The Curl is definitely an iterative product - they were not attempting to innovate here. ALL of the tools (including the clip) already exist in other tools - they are simply repackaging existing tools into a more EDC-friendly platform. It is more pocketable than the Wave, and a Rebar isn’t pocketable at all (no clip). I didn’t think I would like the Curl, but I do. I would like to see a version that comes with a saw instead of a file; but the diamond file is well liked by just about everyone! Leatherman has included files on their multitools since the PST - so no real surprise there. And dissing the nail nick is a bit nitpicky - that’s exactly how it is on the Wave.
I'm an electrician and this seems like a good lightweight EDC option for someone who wants an easily accessible blade with a decent tool set. Would have preferred scissors, but for me a file is far more useful than a saw or serrated blade.

The Sidekick is great and it's a very good balance of price/function. I have 2. One in my car kit and another in my hiking/camping kit.
Rebar has a good saw, has a file too. Get the coyote brown one, a bit stiff at first. Tan clip & carry kydex sheath is good for EDC.
Nope, after carrying the p2 for a few years, I am super grateful to have a full size file ready access. I use it for sharpening axes and what not
You know what's crazy, I was thinking about how it would be great if Leatherman scaled up the PS4 Squirt, and I think the Curl is just that! It has everything I need daily. I love it!
This Leatherman seems perfect for me, I am on a robotics team and NEVER used the saw and serrated knife thing.
Nice I am sure it is a good layout for some... 👍
@@gideonstactical Yeah it seems perfect, also I’m wondering if you plan on reviewing the leatherman bolster.
Leatherman knows how many people want an Awl on their Wave or Charge. This is their answer. This tool is all about the Awl. Just got one yesterday, as I own every other model in the last 20 years. My new EDC multi...at least for the moment.
Never had a problem with my wave pocket clip. 10 years in. Knit picking?
Like the videos though.
Does the wave have a pocket clip from the factory?
The wave is set up the same way, I use the file all the time, and I think a thumb stud would just be in the way. Really sounds like your looking for something to complain about.
I got the Wave + after your review and I pouch-carry it. I am not a heavy user of it, but when I do use it, I am very satisfied.
Bring back the Leatherman Squirt EL!!! I would by 3!!! Also, I wish I could put the mini screwdriver back in place of the small flathead in the Surge!!! Keep up the great vids!!!
I bought a saw off ebay and replaced the file with it.
I like this one a d might pick it up. I really like how its similar to the wave but smaller and lighter. Why i dont carry my wave as much. I kinda wish they pit a large saw on the outside instead of the large file and put a small file in the inside instead of the prybaror bottle opener
This analogy was spot on!!
$80 is rough. At that price I would just go with the sidekick or wingman
Or the two you suggested🤣
I remember when the wingman was $20!!
@@buckfutter8137 I bought sidekick wingman $25 $30.
@@buckfutter8137 the good ole days
I picked up the curl over the weekend ,I agree with you on the file maybe swap it with a wood saw. But the selling point for me was the interchangeable bit tool on it and with the ratcheting bit driver extension it's exactly what I was looking for . But to each their own. Still a good tool if you ask me.
If you are in to knives then the "Diamond File" is invaluable asset to sharpen knives. I love my curl.
That nail nick is great for fishing. When the fish swallows the hook, you put the nick on the line and follow it down to u hook the fish
i like the file i end up in a lot of situation where I have to get rid of sharp edges
i kinda like this Curl. i am looking for something to replace my Gerber Suspension. inside house i carry this or Squirt PS4.
Thanks!
Thanks for the tip. They are on to something. The price needs to be more friendly but will definitely keep them in mind.
RC
Enjoyed the review. Definitely appreciate your videos for that you actually use the tool cutting , working during the video.
I'd rather have an outside accessible scissors like the wingman, with a full size file inside.
Great review. I purchased one. I like it better than the wave for carry.
as a “tool box”, metal file/metal saw is ideal at least for me.
I expect metal work capabilities and tool aspects as a compact tool box on my body.
I don’t use wood saw at the place where I need screw drivers and pliers.
wood saw is handy, but I can cut wood with knife blade.
nothing can do the same job with metal file/saw.
I hate the curl and the bond. Leatherman did us dirty this year
Spot on comments - with mobility lifestyle booming a 3 inch screwdriver is a great idea (actually in fact it’s much needed!!)
Curious what you think is the best Leatherman model in terms of quality and utility?
How about a file/saw combo?
Also, I'm a consumer that absolutely loves the file.
I always carry a knife so I removed the knife on the curl and replaced with the saw from a old wave that was not being used.
Hard to beat the Wave Brother
Bless you and your family
Team charge tti + signal. 2 best for me right now
If they put the saw and serrated and made it a alternative versión of the wave plus with an awl instead of the micro screwdriver. That would make it a success.
Full time RVer? I’ve been out of the loop. What made you decide this? We love having an rv for our adventures.
I like the rebar. It's a good compromise.
I love my wave, it's still the best multi tool out there. It doesn't make sense to me to pick up the curl. I wish all leatherman's came with a pocket clip.
Isn’t the curl lighter weight then both the models mentioned?
I agree if they swapped the file for the wood saw and dropped the price that little bit it would be a lot more viable.
I love my wave and will probably stay with that model.
I'd have much preferred a larger pair of scissors take the place of that file, and then do something else (like the Wave's small second bit driver) where the little internal scissors are.
I’m keeping my Wave+
Maybe the slipjoint screwdriver is for hard to reach, angled screws?
Great review 👌🏻 Does anyone actually use the scissors or bottle opener on leathermans? I always think the scissors are a redundant tool….
I’d much rather see an additional bit driver so I can carry 4 bits without the additional bit kit
Big question is…when will leatherman offer a custom build option
@@benhazell470 yeah I’m in the UK and still most beers need an opener. At least the ones I drink. It seems so many people buy more than one tool to custom themselves. If I’m honest I prefer the Gerber multitools but it’s the same problem. I’ve had to use multiple tools to make my perfect tool.
I personally rarely use a saw, so the curl has been great for me
Perhaps the quality is greater in the Curl (?), but the features seem to be more like the Sidekick or Wingman than the Wave or Rebar that you mention...except the pricing of the Sidekick and Wingman are less than the Curl and the Rebar.
Quality is basically that of a wave with less tools included. Wingman and sidekick are junk.
Maybe it was released specifically to drive more people to spring extra $ for the Wave model?
The Dimond File is one of my favorite features!
A wood saw on this makes little sense to me. They already have a outdoor focused model the signal so to make this a outdoor focused tool would be redundant and not a smart marketplace idea.
Great tool. Simple and practical.
Hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it, right?😉
Awesome that you have an original 👍
Blade, pliers, DIAMOND file/SAW + hand comfort
scissors, driver, awl all quick to stow
Perfection and NOT a gerber mindless copy
If they would of make a p4 with no scissor and add a diamond file to it and the bit driver that for me would be the ideal leatherman and 154cm blade steel
Curl is a no go. Wave or rebar for sure
Oh look, it's the iLeatherman 12 - same thing, just different packaging.
Mistake 3 - Using 420HC as the blade steel. Even in 2021, 420HC is hugely subpar. Dedicated folding knives at $20-30 are running much better steel. They should at least be using Sandvik steel here.
MOAB- The most perfect spot in the world considering desert living.
I love my wave ,that curl is just redundant if you ask me
The lack of a saw is a deal breaker on this one
Files and saws usually have nics, I think?
He's telling Leatherman what they should do? LMFAO.
Yep 👍
I always love and respect your videos. I own many different Leatherman's (posters, please don't respond with "Leathermen") and I like the placement of the file. I use it a lot, and it is in a space that makes it easily accessible. If you change the opening method like the one you state, that would minimize the surface area of the tool, thus reducing the efficacy of it's design. As for the price point, I fully agree.
I like my coyote brown rebar I bought off #Amazon, run it in a tan clip & carry kydex sheath. The tool set is good for me & it's compact/comfortable.
