Guys, it will start a fire. It will help someone locate you. It will sharpen the blade on the Signal. It will smash things.. The tools do what they are made to do. Nothing on here is gimmicky. It is not intended as a primary tool for any tool. It is a backup tool when no other tool is with you. An inferior tool is the best tool when no other tool is with you. The Signal is an awesome multitool for those who spend time outdoors.
I’m an outdoorsman and a scout leader and love my Leatherman Signal. It’s a great everyday carry tool. I don’t go into the backcountry or camping without it. The sharpening tool and whistle and striker are there for emergency purposes. But they all work great.
Exactly. To call it a gimmick is the same as calling the Tortoise gear fire kits a gimmick. They all start fires in an emergency. He doesn’t get that. It’s not a first string use but they are great backups. Redundancy is good. Love mine.
Don't you think guys like this have already made contingencies for such a situation, and would have a more comprehensive belt pouch survival kit on them at all times? I know I do lol.
@@simonh6371 Not everyone is into cosplay, some of us who work in the woods don't want to deal with the harassment of wearing a fanny pack in the woods. 😂
I actually love the tool. I've had mine for a year now and I've always treated it as a backup item. Granted, an expensive item, but I've been pleased with its quality and durability. Bushcraft tools for me are my bk16, small forest axe and small folding saw usually a Laplander. I added this as my 4th tool and it lives in my haversack. Primarily used the pliers (for pots and grills) the awl and the can opener. Everything else is a redundancy. 2 is 1 methodology.
I saw other reviews, a in them I saw a demonstration of how the ferrorcerium rod could be used. It worked. And other reviewers did a better job of explaining the survival tool factor. This review is not looking at this tool for what it is.
Nomster Dude The camera doesn’t pick it up well. However you can get a whistle that’s a lot better and a lot smaller, and is much easier to access in an emergency situation. The whistle is kind of annoying to get out of the signal. Having the signal, I would take this if I had nothing else, but aside from the pliers and wire cutters I find it extremely useless. The saw is great for cutting sticks that you can already break with your hands/other objects. The combo knife is exactly what I would not want in a survival knife where I am going to need to craft things. The hammer is great if you’re in the woods and for some reason can’t find a rock or a stick of wood, which I would prefer over hurting myself with a potential missed strike using the signal. The file is darn near useless unless you have absolutely nothing but a few hours to kill to uncomfortably sharpen a blade, and arguably dangerous due to how many strokes you have to do to make a difference. Idk, but I can say this tool is definitely not for me and I wished I would have watched a few reviews on it before dropping $120.
@@375Cheytac I also have the signal and must say that the whistle makes a very loud noise compared to what I expected. I have found a use for every single tool on it and am glad I bought it. You're points all make sense and I believe the signal is great for some people but not so much for others.
I love mine. EDC it every day. Is it perfect? No...never seen a perfect multitool. But for all the extras my other MTs have, the signal has what actually gets used. Not too heavy, comes with pocket clip. Would like an update with a plain edge knife and scissors.
I hear you, plain edge, scissors, would be a big improvement. I just can't seem to get over the little "fire steel & whistle" combo. Maybe give us those improvements listed get rid of the fire steel and charge us $75, I think I would be a lot more interested.
+gideonstactical the fire steel actually works well if you keep TinderQuik on you. 1 strike. I keep 5 in my wallet. It's a redundancy to your redundancy.
I agree with you but I gave up the scissors thing a while back. It seems too many people judge a tool too much just because it does not have scissors. Just use the knife...works fine. I have a Signal and love it but a person should never think of a multi-tool as their primary tool. If you need a saw and use it a lot, then you should carry a full saw with you. Same goes for the fire starter and hammer. I see this tool as what could be used as a backup or for light duty applications.
Just got mine today and was wondering, is your a little loose? Meaning you can flick it open with one hand provided the lock isn't engaged. I don't mind it if its meant to be that way, but im used to the rebar which is alot tighter.
BugoutBuds the same for mine .. it’s meant to be this way I guess, so you can flick it open like a butterfly knife. Works great ´cause you can use only one hand !
I got the signal because I am what I believe the target market was for it. Prepper noobs. I don't own any multi tools and I imagined myself surviving with nothing but this on my belt. I don't go to the wilderness often and I thought it would be cool to have something that would allow me to tackle the elements. Don't judge me. It has been and is currently sitting on my desk and every once in awhile, I use a tool from it. I end up using the pliers often as they are currently the best of any pliers I own, multi tool or not.
@@clange50 They work well for projects where I need to hold something in place. They come in handy when trying to assemble plastic miniatures of all things. They're also good around the house. If i need to clamp down hard on something to pop it open or just reach into a small space, pliers are the way to go. I also actually went camping with this thing and found the pliers handy for placing small sticks into a wood burning stove. It's the kind of thing where, if you have it on you, you start thinking of ways to use it. The lighter it is, the more likely you will actually carry it so the skeletool is good in that way.
Im really glad I read your comment bc this just justified my reason for buying it, which is identical to yours. Little true wilderness experience, but it looks cool and I’ll use the multitool parts enough, so… yea lol. As others have said I like the idea of redundancy when camping or hiking as well. Having a fire steel on you at all times, however “useless” it is, sounds useful to me, even if I have a 5” ferro rod in my back pack😂
Totally. Like when he blew the whistle and shrugged his shoulder. Why the hell did he do that lmao? The whistle clearly did its intended job. A rather good one at that. A fire starter? How can a fire starter be gimmicky 😐
So many Leatherman fanboys here. I bet if Gerber or any other company came out with a multitool with similar gimicky features, all of you would have much different opinions. Was that whistle meant to only be heard by dogs?
I guess you missed the part where he says he loves the Super tool 300 and Rebar. While I do own the Signal, I understand that the fire steel and whistle are backups to backups. Better than nothing, but you can buy better versions of both for very little
I think the point of the signal is that you can have the rudimentary tools to survive. That’s probably the thought at least, since most people don’t carry a fire starting kit in their pocket. It seems sturdy built, and nothing is falling off.
Could you start a fire with it?.... Yes. Could you hammer a stake into the ground or a nail into timber with it?.....Yes. Could you use the whistle to call for help even when your throat is hoarse from calling out?.....Yes. Could you sharpen your blade if you accidentally cut into a rock?.....Yes. None of this stuff is gimmicky. It is legit backup survival tools and they might end up being your primary survival tools if you happen to be caught out unaware. A lot of hikers don't carry flint or even a lighter, especially if you are hiking somewhere where you're not allowed to light fires but if it was life and death and you needed a fire to stay warm and a whistle to call for help, these tools could save your life. I see so many people saying bad things about the Signal and I just can't fathom what is going through their head. It's like they think that everybody has a backpack full of survival gear on them at every moment. Sometimes you just get caught out and this might be the only tool you have because it was in your pocket or on your belt. Think outside the box. Also I would like to point out that there are tonnes of aftermarket options to replace the sharpener and whistle/ferro rod with tool bit holders and other things if that floats your boat.
The hammer is my most used tool… it’s awesome. It can even take on door pins. It also makes a great pry bar as one side overlaps and is narrow, it works good as a crow bar as you can hook and pull as well . I have 10 or so other leathermans but I always have a signal nearby as it has gotten me in and out of a lot of jams. It’s the only leatherman I have multiples of so I can always have one with me.
it appears as a whole you are against multi tools in general. Want pliers, carry a full set, want wire cutters carry wire cutters, want a blade, buy a 6 inch kabar, want a hammer, carry a hammer, want multiple screwdrivers carry a full set etc etc. you're gonna have one hell of a time bringing a full tool box with you everytime you go out.
It appears you haven't watched any other of his videos. I'd say he's more of a multitool purist, like me and a lot of other experienced commenters here. You're better off with a traditional multitool (Supertool and Rebar for example) and make sure you carry separate firemaking capabilities, whistle etc. I think experienced outdoorsmen steer clear of those firesteel/whistle combos as it is, or those survival bracelets with button compass, microscopic firesteel and so on. This is more for a survival noob.
This Leatherman is great, yeah the sharpener and mini ferro rod aren't the best,in the Right hands of someone who actually knows how to use one it will work.As for the pliers being loose, absolutely crazy, this is one of the smoothest operating pliers Leatherman has.
It was a decent review but when I see people advertising a negative review, one could be forgiven for coming to the conclusion that there is an agenda. The signal is 15% lighter than the wave and around 25% lighter than the super tool. And it's the only one that has the hook at the end. The Skeletool lets me clip the tool onto my belt loop with 1 hand in 1 second. And this without having to add anything to it or having to keep some dorky tool holder on my belt. But I always wished the Skeketool came with more of the standard tools. They did not just make a new tool here folks. If you were paying attention (and clearly some people weren't) They took one of the most popular tools and beefed it up but kept it lighter than the tools in the same class. It's what some people had been waiting for.
this tool looks fucking amazing to me the only problem with it seems to be the small fire steel, wish there was a bigger one so it would last longer but I don't plan to use it often so shouldn't be a problem and spares could be bought...but I saw another channel light a fire quite easily with this thing so Ima buy it
Dude!!!…It’s not meant to be the be all, end all, daily use multi-tool for a fully kitted out woodsman!!! Me and my wingman eject…. No whistle to find each other? No way to start a fire? It’s a very well thought out, fully featured , last resort “SURVIVAL TOOL”!!! I spent 24 years flying USMC aircraft. I would have greatly appreciated such a tool in my post emergency ejection, behind enemy lines, survival kit!!! How can you miss the intent so badly? I forget the UA-camr guy who came up with the term, “Philosophy of use”. “PM 101”? Not sure…? Think on that one, my friend! I usually like your reviews very much.
The reason why the handle is loose is because you can swing it open with just one hand, and that's an important feature for an outdoor tool IMHO. I have been taught to perform many outdoor tasks with just one hand for emergency and survival purposes, and I have seen one of the Leatherman promotional video shown just that.
its meant for emergency not constant use if you had no ferros rod you lost all your gear it would get you through i agree with chris of prepared mind 101
I like the hammer pommel, I'd like to see that on some of the other tools. The saw on mine was a bit wonky, and mine was also loose. I thinknits intentional, as they put the lock on it. Wish theyd ditch can openers and put scissors.
I think many people misunderstand for what this Multi-Tool is for, it's not a survival MT even if he has (last ditch) survival gadget on it. To me it's made for adventure, like they said on the website and I would said more it's a backpacking multi-tool, because the carabiner part (+ pocket clip) make it perfect to fit on a backpack strap, there is no other tool like this in the Leatherman range, the skeletool is small task and EDC thing, the MUT is ultra specific tool. You also have quick acces to blades, great to cut your food when you do a break in your hiking, cut or saw branches on your path, do quick repairs on your other outdoor gear with screwheads, if needed. I already have a Rebar and it's a great tool, but a Signal would be more practical when I go hiking or MTBing in the forest because of blade acces and carrying options. Beside of that, your review was helpful to me, so thanks!
Fair review, i get the point that the extra things like the whistle and sharpener have limited use. Still i think what makes the signal interesting is thatcevetything is packed into one tool. So with a little bit of practice and skill this can be your only tool when you are going into the wild
I have a surge and a 2 holders with bits. Thing has been in my glovebox for years. Never used it. I like the idea of this one and actually wearing the thing. The surge is good and all, tough too, but it is pretty big to lug around daily. Seriously considering selling the surge and getting a signal.
I got the leatherman wave i believe for like 60-70 usd as a gift and i had lost it (recently found). I started looking at it and was amazed at the quality. It has a nice blade, pliars, file, phillips/flathead, can opener, serrated blade, saw...some really useful tools overall. super solid construction and all the tools actually lock when opened which i thought was a very nice feature. really glad i found it
You called the fire steel "gimmicky" ... but then you said in an emergency situation good luck using it.... one thing all the you tube so called pro gear reviewers seem to forget is that it's for just that "an emergency" .. in a perfect situation you'd have a lighter and a can of gas...
I cant take him serious. If you want the best if the best of every tool. Then buy a big 3000 dollar toolbox so you cant complaint. This is a multitool. This is not a tool where every tool is the best in the world. This is to make your life easier. Blade sharpner to small for your axe?!?!?! Why even mentioning this?? This js to sharpen your Leatherman knife, not your whole blade and axe collection.
I EDC one of these because it is the best one for a woodsman but I will admit there are a few features that I wish were not there like the hammer, carabiner, and nut driver. The whistle is ok but not as loud as I would have liked. I'd like to see them take it back to the drawing board and make a few minor tweaks
Originally I was going to get a Rebar instead. But I'm glad Leatherman went with their liner-lock design for the Signal's blade. I tried out multiple Rebars, and each one had tools that wobbled when locked open. Each one! The serrated blades on each Rebar were the worst! They wobbled vertically so badly, that you'd swear the top-lock was broken. No thanks. I went with the Signal instead. Their liners might be thin, but they lock up far better than the tools on the Rebar. Also, my Signal has never accidentally closed on my fingers, even when bearing down on the handles with the blade locked open.
I hear your reaction and somewhat agree but the sharpener and fire steel I view as a redundant option (just in case). It has the awl and not the scissors (i like it). It is light and has enough functionality for the overall package for my daypack. I own a few Leatherman tools Large, medium and this one a lighter option. The signal has many unique features to clip onto my daypack and the overall package fits a niche in my system. Like your channel. We do agree on the ESEE6!!
Leatherman had a clearance sale on their limited Tonquin + kits(first aid, survival, and repair). I paid the full price for the first aid kit $179 and it came with the Raptor. I got the signal, and the Wave+ with the survival and repair kits(respectively) for $130 each. I will say I find myself going to the Wave+ before the Signal. I also haven’t been outdoors since I got them. I keep the kits in my car.
Bought this for my brother who is S.F. it lasted 2 tours and he loves it. So if anyone looking for something that is rugged this held up. Oh I'm not sure how many but some of his S F. Brother's carried thus also.
If this was all you had ... you'd be damn sure as hell kissing it for all it can do for you! You can definitely light a fire off that Ferro ... you can also use that stone to keep your only serious blade sharp for all the work you'll need to be doing around camp to keep fire and give yourself some shelter! It's a gimmick until the shit hits the fan ... then it becomes life saving.
After use not bad and LOVE the custom options but LM Sidekick is a better one item bush tool. One hand opening knife, sprung pliers for removing things when compomised and easy to clean/maintain.
Only thing I dont like in the Signal is the fact that the ferro rod is of the softer, less durable kind and gets worn out after not so many strikes. Apart from that I like the tool, but I just wish the whistle, rod and sharpener were attached to the tool itself with a long paracord or something in order not to be lost
Totally with you on this and actually I have posted similar comments under another review of this. Firstly why would you want or need a bitset on an outdoor survival tool? Trees don't have screws and nuts, furthermore even if you did you're liable to lose little bits in the woods. Secondly the firestarter and whistle are gimmicky and you'd be better off with a full on firesteel. The best price I could get one of these for here in the UK is £135 which is $170. For less than half of that I can get a Rebar, and with the rest of the money buy a shedload of firesteel, sharpener etc. and in fact I'm pretty sure my comprehensive belt pouch survival kit containing poncho, mylar sleeping bag, canteen and cup, MREs etc. etc. comes out at that price. Experienced outdoorsmen prefer to put together their own survival kits in general, even if they end up spending more on them. Seems like Leatherman decided to emulate and upstage Gerber with their Bear Grylls range, even down to the appearance with the black/grey/orange colour scheme. Having said that, they were absolutely right to release this product as there is definitely a market for it , I can see young outdoors enthusiasts being totally thrilled to get one of these as a present, and I have no doubt it sells a lot. Just not for me. No worries though as like I said there are plenty of other options out there.
I'm glad someone finally said it. This is a bit too gimmicky to me. A good first try at an "outdoor" multi tool, but really needs some improvements. The price is absurd to me. I EDC a Surge and this pales in comparison, especially when it's at the (almost) same price. Those little ferro rods are a joke. You see those on $5 "survival" paracord bracelets on eBay. I expect better from Leatherman. Great honest review Aaron.
you are using the DIAMOND sharpener wrong, you're supposed to stroke the other way, and in that case half an inch is plenty (you stroke the sharpener on the blade, it isn't a wet stone.)
The placement of the blade and the saw I have the exact opposite opinion that you do my ST300 has the placement which you prefer and I can't stand. My wave has the placement you can't stand and I love. All that said Peter Kohler is the man and we both love some Dark Timber. God bless you brother.
Oh no, the included emergency supplies aren't as good as individual purpose built tools the size of an entire multi-tool! Walking around with a leatherman every day is quite different than walking around with a knife, fire steel, sharpener, and a hammer on your belt every day.
I use it on my motorcycle trips in rural and poor country’s it helped me a lot on my bike. And I always now I could start a fire and could defend myself a bit.
I was wondering about the knife liner lock. If you are pushing the knife to cut through something why does the thin liner matter? It should only matter if you're doing spine whacks. Correct me if im wrong. Great vid by the way.
Thanks for giving a straight forward, realistic review instead of a glowing praise report just because it has Leatherman stamped on it. I will gladly give Leatherman their due credit but, as someone who has owned a few of them, I know they are not the epitome of excellence that their fan boys claim. And yeah, they have gone crazy with their prices in the last few years, all because too many brainwashed people focus on the hype instead of rationale.
+Armando Gonzalez I gave my son my surge before he was deployed and picked a victorinox for myself. It's good but I will be buying myself another surge.
I would prefer to go along with the victorinox spirit X which is way quality from the leatherman signal or wave . I'm pretty sure that price point of the leatherman is much higher than the victorinox ....
So after my Wave broke after 7 months or so (pliers snaped in two trying to bend a medium sized nail), Im not the greatest fan of LM. Thats not to say LM makes good quality, I might have been unlucky. I went for Victorinox for my new MT, and Ive never looked back. BUT, I can see where LM is comming from here. The sharpener is not ment to compliment other knifes, its ment for the MT it self. Its a standalone tool in myh opinnion. Yeah, it will never rival setups with fixed knifes and dedicated sharpeners, but it will make due as a stand alone (bearly...or so, but thats their intention). If you arer limitited to onlu this, then great. Otherwise, spend your money on a more complex setup. Sorry for my bad English though!
good vid with lots of info as always. I was very interested in this multi tool, now after seeing this I am leaning away from it, specially considering location of tools and price point.
love it as an edc tool. Would like it to have the victorinox style serrations at the front (Better for cutting, rescue and easier to do push cuts) but other than that its great. I carry a victorinox for scissors and thats it. Its really not gimmicky...
I have the Supertool 300. Love it. 2 things i think they could have done better though is a bigger knife like the Signal (minus sarration) and a scissor.
yes but that wont help you start a fire if you are in a survival situation. Unless you carry firestarter or know how to make fire without a starter you are fucked
the best survival tool is the one you have on you. Sure the esee is a great knife are you going to have it on you 50% of the time? this has it all the tools firestarte give you an edge are the the best no. ar they better than nothing YES. serrations: in the event of injury to one hand good luck keeping a straight edge sharpened in an emergency
If you used the fire steel the way you did my friend in a survival situation you'd only smash your fire to bits with the back of your hand . Keep the blade still and move the fire steel . . .
they are multitools mate they arent ment to replace proper tools, so ofcourse its not gonna be like a normal fire rod etc, just like any leatherman cant beat a proper set of dedicated pliers, i do not see your point here
SAK camper with a firefly and the new helix tinder, if minor outdoors stuff or starting fires is a big concern. Otherwise, the skeletool cx is pretty nice for urban carry.
I still use the super tool 200, an older discontinued leatherman and it has held up over the years and has everything i would need, even if it's like carrying a brick around on your belt lol
The bulk of the tool is edc and of high quality. The "gimmick" stuff will save your life if you're lost in woods. Would a butane lighter and gasoline work better - of course (but you are only carrying this)
If i we're you, i would always use another ferro rod and only keep the one on the signal for emergency. The replacement kit is a lot more expensive than any standard ferro rod you can buy
With all the small delicate moving parts on there, is a hammer, which seems to get in the way a lot, a good idea? I'd just use a rock or a stick. I'll stick to my beast, I mean surge, for now. Good video, thanks.
Surely the whistle and flint and sharpener are designed as “better than nothing” and therefore the sharpener is designed to sharpen the blade on the tool
I'm planning on going to a 3rd world country and foot travelling a lot. Even if it's not the perfect scenario I love that it's lightweight, can sharpen itself and make me coffee and a meal. I have a Gerber time if I need scissors and tweezers.
I 100% agree with you on how gimmicky the Leatherman Signal is. The fact that it costs as much as my Leatherman Surge and then when you compare to list of features they offer, the Signal has no justifiable reason to cost that much. I'd rather go hiking with my 12.5 oz. multi-tool combined with the bit kit and some jigsaw blades than shed all that extra weight on something I can't see myself relying solely on. Though, I do wish Leatherman could make a Wave or Charge that has an awl.
When it comes to multitools, your channel is my go to. You cover specs in detail, each tool in detail, and you use them. I don't know if I'm the first to ask but I'd love to see you review the MUT like you did this Signal. I know it's geared more toward firearms but those tools can be used in other day to day tasks as well. I currently have a Sidekick. I absolutely love it. Eventually I want to add the MUT and the Skeletool CX to my collection. Again, would love to see a thorough and honest MUT review like you did on this Signal.
The only thing I will say is as far as the sharpener goes, you need to run it along the knife and not the other way around. Doing such, you can use it to sharpen any size knife without issue. Having said that, I agree with you and while this thing has a great premise and idea behind it, it is WAY to gimmicky. Especially for the price.
John Davis you've got to be the only person that thinks that about the Surge. Especially about the scissors. Thats a lot of peoples favorite part sense there're not dinky like the Wave's. I cant imagine what else on there that doesn't work "all that well". I guess its just subjective opinion, both mine and yours.
The Surge scissors are the first really usable scissors that I've experienced on a multitool. I don't expect them to be as good as a pair of a tailor's shears or a barber's scissors, but for what they are, scissors on a multitool, they've really impressed me. As for the weight, I don't find it to heavy, but then again, I made my living with tools. It's heavier than others, but it's the lightest tool of it's kind with all it's capabilities so it's actually 'light'. When we compare weights, we have to take those capabilities into account. For example, an AWD Honda minivan is going to weigh more than a FWD Honda Minivan, but is it "too heavy" if it can do much more? No, it's the weight it's supposed to be.
Yeah.. this guy is pretty silly. But its fun to watch him try. Notice the drooling and and how he speaks and waves his arms asif he thinks he's rapping. Very tactical.
Good points about the Signal. Really helps me to make a decision. It might be a good choice for some people, I'm probably not one of them. You do excellent camera work btw!
Yeah I'm disappointed with the Signal. I talk in length about multi tool design in one of my videos. I really want something that is a dedicated woodsman. Something with wood carving bits and etc. A light weight titanium hardware option would be nice.
Thank you, still bought it though before seeing this and I agree with you on all the points you make. Going to have a look at your other videos but, in your opinion what would be your top or top three multi tools. Thank you
i have this multitool 08:05 i agree the liner lock is WEAK it is just for really light tasks, 11:35 i agree it is really annoying and uncomfortable to work with the bit driver with the tool opened please consider this if you gonna buy it 11:52 Lie, you can work with the awl, can opener etc with the tool closed, really good review i really liked it
I thought i was the only one who felt like the signal was too expensive for what it offered. It is strange how a Bear Grylls sharpener and lanyard whistle on a knife sheath was gimmicky but a barely there firesteel/whistle combo is considered to be worthwhile on a Leatherman costing almost twice as much.
Exactly, for blade I will carry Fallkniven A1x , for sharpen the Blade i wold carry japanes Ston etc
I agree and I love it! I have one and I like having the whistle and fire rod as an emergency backup.
Now i like this. Good explanation 🎉
I guess I see the sharpener and fero rod not as gimmicks but instead as last ditch emergency tools to complement my edc gear.
yeah I agree its a back up to the back up and if you lose your main pack as you said last ditch effort
Correct.
Redundancy has value.
this guys like yeah sharpener is ok for the leatherman but not for like an axe, lol no shit hahaha
SAK camper can take a much better firefly ferro rod, tinder, and it has two blades. The saw is pretty solid as well.
Love mine.
If he lost his shit in the woods and only had this, he'd thank god for his gimmick fire starter and sharpener.
Mr F ik the multi tool is amazing and as he said 'it's too light to hammer" he's not talking sense... I'd rather not have my pants pulled down
Mr F he's a dope! I came across this and got a good laugh.
Don't you think guys like this have already made contingencies for such a situation, and would have a more comprehensive belt pouch survival kit on them at all times? I know I do lol.
@@simonh6371 I got mine specifically for hanging off a daypack for emergencies. Not really carrying it for my GTFO backpack.
@@simonh6371 Not everyone is into cosplay, some of us who work in the woods don't want to deal with the harassment of wearing a fanny pack in the woods. 😂
I come here to do with the opposite of what this guy says just purchase the Leatherman signal and I never look back. Still going strong 4 years later
I agree.
After watching a few reviews i think your comment is gonna let me order the signal right now
I actually love the tool.
Agreed, he may have to have his lungs checked because it seemed like he could barely breathe into the whistle
Nomster Dude Agreed :) will be checking out the super tool 300 from leatherman as I think that has more of what I’m looking for
I love mine.
Just wondering what you use the pliers for, as I have a skeletool and love it, but I have only used the pliers like 2 times in 2 years.
@@bigchunk1 Thanks for the reply.
Im really glad I read your comment bc this just justified my reason for buying it, which is identical to yours. Little true wilderness experience, but it looks cool and I’ll use the multitool parts enough, so… yea lol.
As others have said I like the idea of redundancy when camping or hiking as well. Having a fire steel on you at all times, however “useless” it is, sounds useful to me, even if I have a 5” ferro rod in my back pack😂
holy crap this guy really hates this leatherman literally wth
Better than nothing, but you can buy better versions of both for very little
@Robin Almond Still travels a lot further than your voice ever will.
Signal is the best
@@simonh6371 Leathermans in general are for noobs and posers
This Leatherman is great, yeah the sharpener and mini ferro rod aren't the best,in the Right hands of someone who actually knows how to use one it will work.As for the pliers being loose, absolutely crazy, this is one of the smoothest operating pliers Leatherman has.
It was a decent review but when I see people advertising a negative review, one could be forgiven for coming to the conclusion that there is an agenda.
The signal is 15% lighter than the wave and around 25% lighter than the super tool.
And it's the only one that has the hook at the end. The Skeletool lets me clip the tool
onto my belt loop with 1 hand in 1 second.
Just curious, what "agenda" do you think he has...
percival23 its perfect for me
this tool looks fucking amazing to me the only problem with it seems to be the small fire steel, wish there was a bigger one so it would last longer but I don't plan to use it often so shouldn't be a problem and spares could be bought...but I saw another channel light a fire quite easily with this thing so Ima buy it
Dude!!!…It’s not meant to be the be all, end all, daily use multi-tool for a fully kitted out woodsman!!!
In an emergency, you can use the sharpener for just about anything. You don't need to be so nitpicky.
I'm pretty sure that sharpening tool is meant to be run along the length of the blade similar to a file.
In 2021 the Signal still lives on the Leatherman website! And guess what? It's a BEST SELLER!
I believe wave+ is the actual best seller
It’s 2023 and both are best sellers lol
Signal is currently selled at 160-180 $ here in Europe (2024).
I own a charge+, a signal and i carry a skeletool as my edc.
I got the signal because its such a cool piece of clever engineering.
Holy sh*T man, thank you for pointing out the flaw at 10:45. That is literally the reason why I wouldn't want to get that.
wie immer gnadenlos ehrlich - super video vielen Dank!
I keep the kits in my car.
wave + is a necessity if you wear glasses.
Facts bro, love my signal
After use not bad and LOVE the custom options but LM Sidekick is a better one item bush tool.
One hand opening knife, sprung pliers for removing things when compomised and easy to clean/maintain.
thanks for a better look at the signal. i've seen a few reviews on it but your review convinced me to stick with my ST300.
I agree not a big fan either, I much prefer the rebar for use and for the price.
No worries though as like I said there are plenty of other options out there.
leatherman is an amazing brand.
Thanks brother!!!
Want a great outdoor multitool? Get a SAK Farmer, time tested and no gimmicks there.
The SURGE is my next Leatherman. Same price, better and bigger tools.... PAPA DUKES
you are using the DIAMOND sharpener wrong, you're supposed to stroke the other way, and in that case half an inch is plenty (you stroke the sharpener on the blade, it isn't a wet stone.)
WHAT?! This thing is $100?! Why they crap would I spend $100 for this when I could purchase a Rebar for $60?! I don't understand.
Yep!
Love my Rebar✨
I think I'll stick with my Leatherman sidekick it seems like it fits my needs way better than the signal
I'm 100% in agreement with you on your assessment of the Signal. Thanks for a great review!
I agree, I end up using the screwdriver bits a lot and it is so awkward on this tool. I ended up going back to the wingman.
I was wondering about the knife liner lock. If you are pushing the knife to cut through something why does the thin liner matter? It should only matter if you're doing spine whacks. Correct me if im wrong. Great vid by the way.
You are missing the whole point of this tool
I see two tools in this video
Thanks for giving a straight forward, realistic review instead of a glowing praise report just because it has Leatherman stamped on it. I will gladly give Leatherman their due credit but, as someone who has owned a few of them, I know they are not the epitome of excellence that their fan boys claim. And yeah, they have gone crazy with their prices in the last few years, all because too many brainwashed people focus on the hype instead of rationale.
I never really understood the hype of leatherman. their great MT's but myself I would rather go for a victorinox
I would too even though they are expensive. I wish Vic. would get more into MT's and offer more than than two basic models.
totally agree. my victorinox is 33 years old and still going strong.
+Armando Gonzalez I gave my son my surge before he was deployed and picked a victorinox for myself. It's good but I will be buying myself another surge.
+Michael Demers awesome. I thank your son for his service
I would prefer to go along with the victorinox spirit X which is way quality from the leatherman signal or wave .
I'm pretty sure that price point of the leatherman is much higher than the victorinox ....
thanks for the honest review. i guess ima purist. give me a supertool or rebar any day
At the end of the saw is a fishhook remover from what I remember. A lot of people don't know about that.
I'm not convinced about this Signal. The points raised seem valid and raise the same questions. I'll stick to my Wave thanks.
I carry an old school wave everyday. The newer model Waves are nice too. A signal would be a good option for beginner Hunters.
You're right, I was going to get this but the hammer is pointless, so is the whistle. Don't know what I was thinking.! Thank for the wake up call.!
good vid with lots of info as always. I was very interested in this multi tool, now after seeing this I am leaning away from it, specially considering location of tools and price point.
Glad I could help.
love it as an edc tool. Would like it to have the victorinox style serrations at the front (Better for cutting, rescue and easier to do push cuts) but other than that its great. I carry a victorinox for scissors and thats it. Its really not gimmicky...
a bit expensive thought...
I have the Supertool 300. Love it. 2 things i think they could have done better though is a bigger knife like the Signal (minus sarration) and a scissor.
I liked leatherman but then got my hands on a SOG and havn't gone back. Great channel and vid, hope fully i can accomplish what u have. great work.
I need to check out some more Sog multitools
Ill be doing a vid soon with some of their tools on my channel hopeflully.
yes but that wont help you start a fire if you are in a survival situation.
In Germany, the signal will cost around 140 euros, or about 155 dollars!
Dang. Watching in 2024 and it’s 40% more expensive at $140 now
Yeah, inflation sucks
I still use the super tool 200, an older discontinued leatherman and it has held up over the years and has everything i would need, even if it's like carrying a brick around on your belt lol
The bulk of the tool is edc and of high quality. The "gimmick" stuff will save your life if you're lost in woods. Would a butane lighter and gasoline work better - of course (but you are only carrying this)
the firestarter works perfectly. take the time and learn how to actually use it. only issue i have is i wish there was more of the ferro rod.
If i we're you, i would always use another ferro rod and only keep the one on the signal for emergency. The replacement kit is a lot more expensive than any standard ferro rod you can buy
@@cevolyh thats a really good point/idea, im defintiely going to do that 👍🏼
With all the small delicate moving parts on there, is a hammer, which seems to get in the way a lot, a good idea? I'd just use a rock or a stick. I'll stick to my beast, I mean surge, for now. Good video, thanks.
Thanks for watching!
+gideonstactical Please make a review on the SOG Powerassist. I would like to know your opinion on it. Thanks in advance!
The only thing that I like is you can buy the whistle Ferro rod which would be good in an altoids tin.
Good feed back!
If you are using the screw driver it can't close completely! Also the yellow plastic hook of the flint breaks really easy!
This tool is $283 in Australia . So much money
there about £70-100 in the uk
If you are thinking of getting the leather man signal get it at snowy mountain camping shop for 200 dollars if that sounds cheaper to you
There is an agent there that’s making extra money
Just need a sport, enjoy your camping trip! Leatherman understands product line. GJ.
Agreed. Too many gadgets.
I'm a Leatherman Surge guy.
The Surge is good
I still carry the kick
Surge is the best MT on the market, JMHO.
I totally agree with your review and evaluation of the Leatherman Signal. Superior review! Best Wishes, Jay
Honestly I love the wave. Cos like even though the surge has the good scissors, I've never been in a camping trip where I needed a scisoors
Not yet!!
Lol you want S30V blades on a multitool? I see why I never noticed your channel before.
Yeah.. this guy is pretty silly. But its fun to watch him try. Notice the drooling and and how he speaks and waves his arms asif he thinks he's rapping. Very tactical.
Damn you guys are heating his ass
What's wrong with s30v blades on a multi tool? The charge TTI has s30v main blade, and I love it.
@@TheKimjoh560 Wow, you're really gonna criticize someone for their unconscious movements? Nice one, you arrogant ass hole.
I am very critical of gideonstactical knife reviews for many reasons
BUT his multi-tool reviews like above are *on the money* right.
Thanks my friend.
Good points about the Signal. Really helps me to make a decision. It might be a good choice for some people, I'm probably not one of them. You do excellent camera work btw!
Archi Geist thanks so much my friend! Glad to hear it! Always want to help you the viewers out.
I wonder if the blades/saw/files can be interchanged from one device to another.
Thank you
ST300 and Surge are great from leatherman if you want to stay in the lineup. Definitely going to be returning the signal after 1 day of ownership.
i have this multitool 08:05 i agree the liner lock is WEAK it is just for really light tasks, 11:35 i agree it is really annoying and uncomfortable to work with the bit driver with the tool opened please consider this if you gonna buy it 11:52 Lie, you can work with the awl, can opener etc with the tool closed, really good review i really liked it
I thought i was the only one who felt like the signal was too expensive for what it offered. It is strange how a Bear Grylls sharpener and lanyard whistle on a knife sheath was gimmicky but a barely there firesteel/whistle combo is considered to be worthwhile on a Leatherman costing almost twice as much.
so if not the Leatherman signal, what do you recommend for multi-tool?
