  • Why would you put winglets on a motorcycle? And how come the oldschool Dustbin fairings were banned in 1958?       Indeed. Motogp needs a lot of help in presenting their product. (At least in North America) The fact that they charge you to watch race highlights online... 🙄 They need to take a page or two out of NASCAR's book. NASCAR took one the most boring motorsports and actually sucked me (and millions of others) into it because of coverage, useful website, tech explanations, mobile apps, driver background stories.

      RoadRunner MotoGP is doing fine world-wide when it comes to numbers.I don't think Nascar is ever gonna beat them there.MotoGP made a deal with DAZN too so the coverage in the US has improved alot more.Amd the rider pass access is also quite awesome feature for MotoGP marketing

      I don't think most people watch MotoGP git the science.But mostly for that sweet action we get from last lap battles especially from last season.As well overtakes galore,drama and so on

    LOVED the Video!
    I only wish you had done more, at the end, about the 2018 'pass-thru' aerodynamics and how they still provide substantial downforce with less turbulence and without the exposed 'winglets' that were so dangerous in a crash.

    Really good video, referencing the 85 year old technology of dustbin fairings was useful in explaining the purpose of modern fairings and how its not always the fastest design that works best.

      In all seriousness, don't you think there's money to be made if someone started making winglets for bikes? Of course they're dumb for the average rider, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't sell..... 🤔

      You might be right, but for this to work there must be one crucial thing - the cool factor. :P Same thing with putting spoilers on cars - adding rear spoiler to civic is pointless, but some people do it anyay. ;)

      Who said a spoiler on FWD cars are pointless??? That's invalid. While it may not have a benefit on a straight (unless you also have a real splitter in the front), it DOES help with weight transfer and lift oversteer. So no, they are not pointless.

      @@MikeonBikes You missed the main benefit of VGs.. they reduce the trailing turbulent flow (wake) behind the rider & bike in not just reducing negative pressure drag behind.. but with a much smaller trailing wake.. less ability for tail gating.. frontal area is a small factor in drag coefficients.. a more important factor is the surface angles to the airstream & affect on laminar flow, not for surface laminar flow as such.. but the effects created by a ballooning effect of the airflow bubble around the fairing & rider displacing a given volume of air mass.. good references though to VGs, turbulators & foils that I've not heard any other commentators mention, except foils.. 👍.. I'm still waiting to see team engineers mount radiators under the seats like John Britton did in copying Steve Roberts F1 bikes of the early eighties.. they showed significant aero benefits over front mounted rads..
      In reference to your maths/engineering etc.. it's not.. zero point one hundred eighty six.. it's zero point one eigth six.. zero point two seven not twenty seven.. still really enjoy your channel.. lots of thought 👌

    I thoroughly enjoyed your video and analysis, but I did want to mention that in some ducati and aprilia cases Vortex Generators have been used to aid radiator performance to energize flow ahead of the outlet duct to aid heat extraction. I also feel like we might see "air curtains" in coming seasons in motogp, or my hope, some attempts at "trapped vortex" applications.

    Yes yes yes!
    I fell in love with winglets the 1st time I saw them on an aprilia 2018 RSV4 RF LE#14.
    I now own it. My goodness, it makes me into a far better rider than I ever was before. If someone does not like wings, ask them on which bike did they try them... because I have.
    I love them. Take it from me...
    145mph never felt so smooth.
    I got youtubies, first road thru aprilia wings video and stuff...

    4th downside, winglets create drag at high speed therefore affecting top speed and acceleration. You get something and you lose something

    I would add that the dustbin fairing covered up the front wheel, a major source of drag. The spokes are moving at twice the vehicle speed as they come over the top. As drag increases as the square of velocity, even those skinny spokes can have quite an effect at speed.
    Also, Cda is simply how efficiently air moves around an object, compared with a flat panel with the same frontal area.

    Many '50s GP bikes with dustbin fairings also had a tail fairing. This smoothed out the air flow behind the rider, and importantly, moved the aerodynamic centre of pressure rearwards, thus addressing much of the cross-wind problem cited in the video.
    By 1957, bike makers such as Mondial and Moto Guzzi had resolved much of the stability problem with full fairings. Because of the recession in motorcycle sales in the mid-late '50s, most manufacturers withdrew from GP racing at the end of the 1957 season, leaving MV Agusta as the dominant manufacturer entering GPs. They had never succeeded in making full (dustbin + tail) fairings work (handling and cooling problems) so they got them banned.

    I am sure a modern take on the “dustbin” would be able to compensate for the large difference between the center of pressure and gravity... it’s a shame they’ve been outlawed *_full stop_* as it’s a *_very_* interesting area of development lost.

    I could be wrong, but your CdA data for the Hyabusa seems somewhat ambitious. Typically the standard Busa achieves a CdA of between 0.55 to 0.60. There are drag/power calculators out there you can check to see the effect on potential top speed. 200bhp to achieve 200mph seems in the ballpark for a bike with a CdA of 0.5. I agree that stability is the main issue for reducing the CdA to levels achieved in the '50's. My own race bike was tested at MIRA Wind tunnel during 2015 where our CdA was verified at 0.21. Our design minimised turbulent vortices around the rider and showed good indifference (stability) to side winds and minimal front or rear lift coefficient figures at high yaw angles. It can be done, but the blinkered FIM have consistently thwarted attempts by aerodynamicists and designers over the years to improve and develop the bikes to be safer and more fuel efficient. It is a much misunderstood subject and much under explored in the 2 wheel world. The FIM technical team have a sketchy understanding of this science that ironically, has been the main driver for the huge developments for improved efficiency in the automotive world and the very lifeblood of F1 along with their advanced hybrid power trains that we have yet to see in any FIM championship. Oh dear this sounds like a rant. Sorry about that. BTW I liked the video.

    This winglet concept is feasable only since anti-wheelies software are available. With conventional throttle if the nose begin to lift then the negative angle of attack of the winglet get smaller reducing the downforce allowing the nose to lift even more thus further reducing the angle of attack to eventualy end up with positive lift pushing the bike to do a backflip. That's called an unstable equilibrium the opposite of what an airplane tail is made to do.

    A wing on a car provides downforce at all times. A wing on a motorcycle provides a force that is directed towards the tires. When the bike is in a corner and leaned over, the aerodynamic force is angled with the bike. It doesn't push downwards only, but outwards from the turn as well.

    but when you lie it flat into a corner isnt that downforce suddenly sideforce making the front tire want to wash out into a lowside? did the designers only think about the upright position?

      When sideways... the wing would act like a shark fin, cutting the wind ...only when the rider lifts the bike he has to shuggle, so then they have to use more energy to get the bike upright, or flip it to the other side

      This is highly debatable. As the lean angle goes beyond 45 deg, the force is exerted more to the side, the wrong side. So far, it creates a significant outward force, but also a down-force. Rider opinion at this point, is it's a bit like more or less physical weight on the front. It does very much have an effect, but exactly whether that's a positive thing or a negative thing depends on the bike and the rider and the circumstances. (Tyre choice, front spring rate & preload, etc...) It is very much like adding a 20kg bag of cement over the front of the fairing - there are circumstances where that's a bad thing and others where it actually helps. The place where it really does help, -a lot-, is as the bike picks up out of a fast corner, and goes for full power. The one who gets the biggest benefit, is Ducati, because their bike has a relatively low & rearward centre of gravity. The weight distribution of the Duke is perfect to get maximum power down and drive forward, as early as possible, but as the bike comes more upright, the rider has to back off to control the wheelie. The Yamaha has this problem rather less, because it has a higher and further forward centre of gravity. The heavy part on the yam is like where the cylinder head is. The heavy part on the duke is like where the clutch is.... That does not provide a clear advantage to one or the other, overall, but it does mean as you pick up off the corner, at 120 ~ 200 km/h, the duke first gets much better drive, but then can't maintain that forward drive because the front lifts. That's why Ducati are playing with downforce, and the most loud and vocal to keep it and defend it. They have by far the most to gain. Everybody else is jumping on the band-wagon, because ... you know, there might be an advantage in it... Why let Ducati have turbochargers if we don't have them?

      Yeah it struck me when I saw it too. I thought it was a modified TL1000S but its actually a Bimota with a modified TL1000R motor and reworked S front fairing.
