History is repeating itself: Why Switch 2 is similar to SNES

  • If all goes well, the Switch 2 will be to the Switch what the SNES was to the NES. Just like the SNES built on the NES with better graphics, new gameplay, and an unforgettable lineup of games. The Switch 2 could truly become the Switch but better but not without its challenges.

I think it's way more similar to the DS and 3DS. Firstly, they are part of the same brand. The "DS" brand, having the same exact clamp-shell design. Secondly, the last iteration was the one they built off of for the next system (The DSi being the DS that they modeled the 3DS after, and the Switch OLED being the Switch they are modelling the Switch 2 after, with the whole OLED thing). Thirdly, all they are doing with the naming is adding a number to the next one. Fourth, the next one added way better graphics, which can allow for more powerful games, even if they aren't going to be breath-taking.

I laugh at the notion that Sony or Microsoft could ever be able to challenge Nintendo in the Handheld/Hybrid market.
Microsoft has already confirmed that Forza Horizon 5 is coming to PS5, with a Switch 2 version likely to also be announced soon. If that's the case, Microsoft have already shot their chance at competing directly with Nintendo dead by supporting the Switch 2.
On the other side of things, Sony doesn't have the sheer brand power that Nintendo has, especially since Sony has spent the past decade ensuring their games come out as bland and generic as possible. The only game they've made that even holds a candle to Nintendo's level of charm and quality is Astro Bot, and it's unlikely a sequel will be coming out any time soon(Astro Bot only recently released). If Sony really wants to challenge Nintendo at their own game, they're going to have to step up in a big way, and considering they just incurred humongous losses chasing the live service trend, a move like that is more than likely to bankrupt them.
The truth of the matter is that the entire games industry has been chasing fool's gold for so long, that Nintendo got the chance to become the king of the industry without anyone even noticing. It's basically Nintendo's game to lose at this point, and they're positioning themselves to dominate the industry for at least another 10 years.

Agreed, aside from stating that Sony would go bankrupt over their console sales.
Yeah they can get pushed out, just like Microsoft is, but both of them are not only videogame companies, Sony is huge on the electronics market, and Microsoft owns the biggest computer Operating System in the world, MacOS/Linux don't come close. Doubt that closing out the gaming segment would make their tech empires fall so easily.
But yeah, maybe in 10 years time we will see Sony taking the same route Microsoft is, their gaming segment becomes a glorified game publisher, PS6 and Xbox-something are the last consoles they make to try and appease their diminishing audience, and Nintendo takes over the console segment for good.

This take is so biased and uniformed it's hilarious.
Those who underestimate their opponent often lose to them. I mean that's exactly why Nintendo is in this position to begin with. They underestimated Playstation and later XBOX so much they dropped their attempts to compete with them starting with the Wii and devised a strategy that appealed to niche audiences and quirky features.
If they do that again the will lose their supposed dominance of the portal and handheld market.

@@theumbralwalker1824 Sony is the largest console maker on the planet, they are not at all in danger of shuttering their console division. The portable console will take on a PSP or Vita role and be the offshoot to their mainline console brand. The ONLY reason Sony would drop their console market share (again, the largest in the industry) is if they jump aboard the PC train. The future of gaming is a two path future. PC ( and PC emulation) gaming and mobile gaming.
Nintendo works as well as they do because they cornered a niche market and keep to themselves in it and their staunch refusal to loan their IPs to third parties. It's low cost, low overhead but it is not daring nor ambitious and it limits growth and profit massively. It will not save them in the future if they don't take chances. Playing it safe is a good way to maintain the status quo before going extinct. They can straddle the line between mobile and PC gaming but eventually they will have to make a choice and that choice will determine whether their console making days continue or not.
Nintendo is also weirdly behind the times on many things due to their leadership, that will have to change as well if they don't want to become the next Sega or Atari.

The Switch 2 will ultimately drive more sales for the Switch since the latter will be viewed as an affordable entry-level option to the Nintendo library.
Yes, there will be games that utilize Switch 2 features, but developers won't pass up the chance to sell to an already established player base.
In some sense, the Switch 2 will appeal to dedicated fans looking for better, smoother performance out of the existing library while making the regular Switch more economically appealing to newer audiences.
So the situation we're in is not exactly like going from the Wii to Wii U, where it's a completely different console, but also not exactly like the 2DS to 3DS, where it's just the same console with more performance/features.
The Switch 2 moreso serves as an extension of the Switch product line while also having its own exclusive library. Like a hybrid... hybrid console.

It's rare that backwards compatibility keeps the previous generation alive. All the new and exciting games will be made for the new hardware; it's just a nice feature to prevent making playing old games a hassle for established players and an extra selling point for those who sat the generation out.
Of course the difference between the hardware is much more minute than what going to the Playstation 2 brought back in the day. Hence why the Playstation 5 is the 'no thanks' console with no games. But the Switch 2 will... have some exclusive games.

Nintendo saw the writing on the wall and opted out of being a direct competitor with Sony and MS.
BTW, Nintendo BETTER have won the games exclusives sales, they better have for the past 3 generations since that is about 90% of their game sales and the only reason anyone purchases their systems. That's also why they hang onto Mario, Pokemon and Zelda for dear life as exclusives and shut down emulation of every one of their old games. Because as soon as the genie is out of the bottle Nintendo will be annihilated by PC and PS.

Every other Nintendo console is just an either better or more experimental version of the previous console. SNES is basically the NES with better graphics, and more polished 2D style gameplay. N64 was Nintendo’s first 3D console and the GameCube was a more refined version of that. The Wii introduced motion controls to add some immersion to games, and the Wii U used the same controllers plus the gamepad for even more immersion and was in HD. Also, it's kind of funny you criticize these other companies for their games when Nintendo has relied on the same dozen IPs to sell games for decades and has had diminishing returns with the likes of Pokemon among others. And their other issues to squeeze money out of the consumer while alienating their biggest fans. What are you talking about? Sony and MS don't have the same mission statement as Nintendo. Their goals were to push hardware specs as far as possible while keeping the console affordable. Nintendo hasn't been about that since Game Cube. They made repeated, massive cuts to their specs to keep an insanely low price point which is what drives their sales and market share interest. Their cheaping out on the hardware with outdated technology is why they can sell consoles for a profit at launch vs MS and Sony. They just make it up tenfold with game sales because they flat out sell a larger portfolio of games each generation.
Nintendo was hemorrhaging money until the switch game along,. They had a 7 year lull in profits and in stock prices at the tail end of the Wii and all of Wii U's lifetime. These are documented facts. They were a failed Switch console away from bowing out of the console market completely ala Sega.

God of War, Last of Us, Halo, Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo, Forza, Indiana Jones, Astrobot, Uncharted, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, etc. It just doesn't comprise 80% of their profits so they aren't so protective of the IPs that they don't cross-platform it years down the road (except Halo).

I think the Switch 2 currently feels more like going from PS2 to PS3/PS3 to PS4/PS4 to PS5 or like the GB to GBC than NES to SNES to be honest. Many felt they were being forced to by a new console- and many purchasers, who were often parents, didn't understand.

That whole dock has been condensed to as little as a charging brick many times before by third parties. Nintendo cheaped out when they made the first Switch and made what they always did best, portable consoles. The only difference is that these are more powerful and connect to the TV. No one ever called the Sega Nomad or the PSP Go "hybrids" just because they allow you to connect to the TV.

    • @AltairEgo1
      @AltairEgo1 День тому +1

The design is more iterative, but I can see some similarities. The Switch, like the Super NES, is part of the same "family" of platforms. SNES was part of the Family Computer/Nintendo Entertainment line. The changes aren't as dramatic, but the jump from Switch 1 to Switch 2 is not terribly different than the jump from 8 to 16-bit. 8-bit to 16 was still largely a 2D game landscape. Most titles were either top down 2D RPGs, 2D shmups, 2D fighters, and 2D platformers. We had more 3D games than we used to, but nothing near the quantum leap games took when the 64 came out.
We still had largely the same games, just bigger and better titles. Super Castlevania 4, a bigger and better version of the other classicvanias, Contra 3, a more badas$ sequel of Super C and Contra 1, Gradius 3, still a 2D shmup, but a much harder version.
I would say this generation of Switch 2 looks a lot more like SNES than their other generations. Wii had virtually no improvements, and GCN/N64 had nowhere near the third party support.
This generation, like 8 to 16, will not be not a quantum leap in the way the 5th gen was. It will be iterative, but the games will look better, play better, and there's room for titles that couldn't possibly run on Switch 1.
And I would say Switch 1 is like the NES of modern Nintendo consoles. It basically revitalized the handheld industry, and really was a trailblazer in indie game dev support and other small devs like the Octopath and Bravely studios. It not only cornered a market, it damn near monopolized it. Instead of being the usual background character in the industry, Nintendo is the market leader.
Like the SNES, i don't see Nintendo reaching these heights with the successor, but I can see them continuing to be the market leader for a while, if not at least equal with other platforms in market share and third party support.

I predict that Switch 2 will not sell as many units as the original, however it will very much be sucessful. Indeed, much like it was with NES and SNES and not Wii and Wii U. There are many factors at play but there's one reason primary reason - Nintendo no longer has proper competition. PS5 is definitely in decline and Xbox fares even worse. I woud predict that Microsoft will sooner quit the console business rather than release a new one. Games are properly cathered to specific niches and Nintendo garnerst the largest population of gamers. Maybe Sony will release PS6 but I wouldn't expect it to be much of a competitor, but rather an alternative option for games with more tech requirements. Now, compare it to the situation of Wii U in 2012/2013 - Sony and Microsoft, even though lost to Wii, still held a strong position in the market with PS3 and X360. And new revolutionary PS4 was just around the corner, which was the best console of its era and we know why. 3DS did better, primarily because of its local, Japanese market which loves handhelds. And now Switch basically joins both portability and high quality of gaming. It sequel is going to continue that trend. Only thing Nintendo has to do is to offer it at some affordable price and it is bound to succeed.

You clearly don't know much about Nintendo.. they NEVER sell consoles at a loss, they INSIST on making a profit off their hardware. You're confusing Nintendo with Sony and Microsoft.
Nintendo has and will always sell hardware at a profit if they can help it.. unless there is a market change.. they sell at a profit..

The even numbered Nintendo consoles all have similarities I feel. They have always felt like a more refined experience both in terms of hardware and software. Build quality also is generally better, NES to SNES is a good example, but also look at the difference between the N64 and Gamecube controllers.
I can kind of see what people mean when they say they can see commonalities between the Wii U and Switch 2 but I think they mostly come down to following this 'even number pattern'. The Switch 2 will likely sell worse than Switch 1 but it won't bomb like the Wii U did. I think Nintendo in 2012 were in a uniquely terrible position where they had to choose between creating a direct competitor to the PS4 and Xbox 1 or aiming primarily to maintain their Wii audience with a somewhat gimmicky console. They chose the latter and it didn't work out, but I'm not convinced the former would have been a roaring success either. Releasing something like the Switch in 2012-13 was not an option as the hardware either didn't exist or wasn't cheap enough at the time.
