ハイドロシティ/ハイドロCITY (Hydro City, and even my phone's JP showed the second one as an option when I was typing)=⭕💯
Source: I just read the JP Sonic 3 manual. I've had enough of this debate. It's the same as people who say Pokēmon (incorrect) rather than Pokémon (correct) and it's ridiculous. No, I'm not joking. ドロ (Doh Roh) is not ドロー (Doro-h) ("Draw" phoenetically), nor is it ドラ (Doh Rah) nor ドラー (Doh Raah), so Hyドラssity and Hyドラーssity do not make sense, therefore it can only be ハイドロシティ with the most important kana being ロ (Roh) shown here. It's not a pun, it's not a pseudo portmanteau on hydro and velocity, it's HYDRO CITY, even though there are no spaces in the katakana like ハイドロ•シティwould have looked if it has been typed that way in the manual. The "•" doesn't matter, but the kana being ロ / ロー / ラ / ラー does, and it's ロ. End of discussion.

I think that's pretty neat!

  • @HungryWarden

Or it's just a result of the doomed echidna tribes.

The civilization that made emerl went extinct. Gerald found this robot and if I'm not mistaken he said that there were 5 great civilizations in the past and that they all went extinct. One of them is the echidnas, so much so that Pachacmac wanted the emeralds to be able to defeat the rival clans. Let me theorize the other civilizations near Angel Island in the past (I theorize that Angel Island was all the Knuckles clan could dominate). Owl Clan: located on West Side Island. Kitsune clan: located on the west side island, creators of Emerl. And... that's all... there was a civilization on Little Planet and Never Lake but I don't know which civilization it would be in Sonic CD. I feel like that angel statue could be remnants of a civilization who once lived there. It couldn't have been the little animals who built these places because that wouldn't really make sense (although it would be hilarious)

@Appl-w3k Wacky Workbench, Quartz Quadrant and Stardust Speedway were built by Eggman. In the concept art of Little Planet shown in Sonic Origins, it shows how much influence pollution, robots and machines have on the present rounds. Quartz Quadrant is at 70%, Wacky Workbench is at 90%, and Stardust Speedway and Metallic Madness are at 100%. Now, the past of these rounds. Wacky Workbench present has the possibility of being owned by Eggman like Metallic Madness past. But I don't know. I hope Sonic 4 the movie has hints of the civilization that lived on Little Planet and Never Lake.

If it was written as two words, I would pronounce it as "hydro city." But because it's one word, I pronounce it in the way that rhymes with velocity. The sounds of words changes when they are expanded and the stress changes. This is a normal part of English, and why should Hydrocity be any different? In reality I don't really care how it's pronounced, It is a compound word used for the translation of a game originally developed by a Japanese team. They are both equally "right" and there are good arguments for using either pronunciation. But I'll keep saying it the way that makes sense to me. The reality is, if the team put a space in the name and called it "Hydro City" instead, no one would care and no one would be asking this question.

Yes, because it looks just like a city. You know where I build my cities? Underground, with the only way to access it through falling off of a bridge.
It’s pronounced Hydrocity in its original appearance. If I am referring to the zone in a game where it has a space in between, I’ll call it hydro-city, but the original zone doesn’t have a space on it and neither does the Mania version.

If you think about it, the Japanese pronunciation of the word "velocity" is ベロシティ(BEROSHITI) and Hydrocity would be ハイドロシティ (HAIDOROSHITI). So you could say the answer is technically both (or neither) as the pronunciation of the O in VELO- would simply be OH. Also English words borrowed in Japan don't treat emphasis the same way we do, so they don't need to modify the straightforward pronunciation of hydro-city to make the connection work. Heck, it works better as a reference to "velocity" because the Lo is pronounced the same way as Ro in Hydro. Be-ro-shi-ty. Hai-do-ro-shi-ty.

I’ve always thought that zone names were made up on the spot in Sonic’s head based on what was observable at the time ingame when he found it. Oil Ocean probably wasn’t always covered in oil after all, in an industrial area it should have its own proper name. It would explain why the final space level in Sonic 2 is named Doomsday Zone. It’s just a strip of space, but if Eggman got away with the Master Emerald at that time, it would cause doomsday to occur.

Hydro is related to water, and is used as prefix on the stage name to make it mean "City of Water".
It makes no sense to pronounce the "hydro" nor "city" any different that you normally would just because Hydrocity is "one word".
Specially considering that english is really loose about phonetically pronounce words as they are written.
"Colonel" is the first exemple that comes to mind, and that is just the point of iceberg on this weird language.
What I mean is, unless we can some how talk to the people that, in universe, named that zone and hear what they call it, it is impossible to really know how you are supposed to say "Hydrocity". It could be "Hide-Roc-Itch" for all we really know. :v

Something I find fun is how at a glance, it looks like Sonic CD uses the same naming scheme as the other classic games, because the word "Zone" is primarily displayed on the title cards. Like, the full name of the first level is "Palmtree Panic Zone 1", which technically contains the string "Palmtree Panic Zone", but that's just because the subdivisions of levels are called "Zones" instead of "Acts" in CD. The same is true of Sonic Lost World, though Smash Bros. apparently didn't get the memo, because the stage based on Windy Hill is called Windy Hill Zone.
