There are many subgenres and game formulas inside those genres. I would categorize games in this way: ACTION: FPS (arena shooter / twitch shooter / boomer shooter / looter shooter / hero shooter / battle royale/ "realistic" shooter / immersive shooters), third-person shooters ARCADE: shoot-em-up (shmup), platformer, metroidvania, top-down games ADVENTURE: point-and-click quest, walking simulator, visual novel. FIGHTING: 2D and 3D fighting games, beat-em-up, hack&slash RPG: cRPG, jRPG, arcade RPG (Diablo clones, Roguelikes), action RPG (Witcher, Elder Scrolls games, Souls-likes, etc), MMORPG STRATEGY: turnbased or realtime (RTS, 4x Strategy, Tactical strategy, Management/Tycoon strategy), Tower Defence. These are the hero shooters, which allows you to play as different characters, each welding different weapons and having different abilities. Hero shooters are generally not as violent than other shooters, with them having little blood and no swearing.
And the difference is what? Whether I switch between two weapons like in Halo or switch between two characters to get different weapons to use, the genre didn't change. Hero shooter? Stop making shit up on the toilet. Just flush it.

For me , action games are all games that require you to have full (or almost full) attention, focus and control on the situation/gameplay and they usually require you to have fast reactions/reflexes, good hand-eye coordination, a good sense of tactics, and very developed muscle memory. In those type of games (especially if they are online/multiplayer), you can easily lose if you dont have much focus and attention. Ofc , there are action games that are more chill/casual than others and in those you can vibe without paying that much focus and attention but it is still very much required. Also action games require you to have the lowest latency (whether it is monitor latency or internet latency or both) out of all genres.

For example Mario, Limbo, Celeste and Super Meat boy are all 2d platforms but vary greatly in their style and themes and their style/themes aren't even considered genres or sub-genres of any kind (with the possible exception of Limbo but I'll get to that). This rule that genre is the gameplay holds true with one exception, horror games. For whatever reason horror is considered a genre despite being an aesthetic, a style or theme that has nothing to do with gameplay and it's application is entirely arbitrary, for example dark souls has a horror aesthetic equal or greater to "horror" games yet it itself is not labeled as such. As far as I can tell the application of the "horror" genre is entirely inconsistent and arbitrary and often just self-imposed by developers who seem to want to make movies instead. The use of horror as a genre in video games is entirely uncalled for and should be stopped, change my mind.

I agree with you here. But coming from the mind of a certain creator/game developer Zelda sprang from the idea to create a type of easy to understand RPG. Not kidding. But even then they dubbed this game as such part of their "adventure" series. We can say the action adventure was born out of the RPG corner.

you described action adventure games in the adventure portion. you completely left out point and click adventures. horror isnt a game genre, it's a narrative genre. you can make a horror game in many ways. game genres describe gameplay mechanics and gameplay focus, not setting or narrative. people mess this one up all the time

It's hard to be comprehensive with genres since they scale down to the smallest little details. If you're looking to make a part 2 I'd recommend checking games databases to see what kinda genres you can find. Places like mobygames, or maybe even flashpoint are good starting points
No , simulation is more about to make the game have animation, graphics and gameplay that feel close to a real life experience. Not all games are simulation.
In retrospect, graphical prowess is possibly gaming's least enduring quality. Kudos to artists pushing hardware to its limits, but tech's lifespan is always short; and for every aspect of a video game (unless its design is intentionally retro) graphics age as well as unrefrigerated milk.

My top tiers are Rpg, Strategy, Adventure, Action and survival in this order.

For whatever reason horror is considered a genre despite being an aesthetic, a style or theme that has nothing to do with gameplay and it's application is entirely arbitrary, for example dark souls has a horror aesthetic equal or greater to "horror" games yet it itself is not labeled as such. As far as I can tell the application of the "horror" genre is entirely inconsistent and arbitrary and often just self-imposed by developers who seem to want to make movies instead.
For example five nights are freedy's, Dying light, left 4 dead and FEAR are all considered to be in the horror genre yet have literally nothing in common gameplay wise.
The use of horror as a genre in video games is entirely uncalled for and should be stopped, change my mind.
Don't forget RTS games they are many of these genre games including : "Command & Conquer" and "Dune 2000" .
and we also don't forget about :
-tycoon . idle . indie . rhythm games . and many more.......(plz part 2 :3)

I agree with you here. But coming from the mind of a certain creator/game developer Zelda sprang from the idea to create a type of easy to understand RPG. Not kidding. But even then they dubbed this game as such part of their "adventure" series. We can say the action adventure was born out of the RPG corner.

It's hard to be comprehensive with genres since they scale down to the smallest little details. If you're looking to make a part 2 I'd recommend checking games databases to see what kinda genres you can find. Places like mobygames, or maybe even flashpoint are good starting points
