Disagree with the negative assessment on the styling. A more conservative/conventional look should age better than wilder, more aggressive looks. It’s already pretty well worked that way on the S. Nice review though.
It’s all subjective but I feel the S was a good looking car and still is. The Model 3 has an awkward bloated look from many angles and is missing something special.
Our 2021 Model Y long range is pure ❤️after 10,000 miles. Fast as hell, comfy seats, safest in a crash, killer stereo and best of all not 1 drop of gas. Zero maintenance ✌🏻 if you drive one you will want one too.
I would love to have one too but sadly too expensive for me so i am close to buy a BMW i3 insted. But beleve me, the Tesla is the one i would have IF i had the money.
zero maintenance is huge deal.. 10yr projected maintenance cost should be under 3,000$ with less than 10% probability of major issue over the period. Compared to that.. Porsche Macan will cost 20,000$ with 80% chance of major issue for the same period of time. Model Y only needs tire rotation every 12k mile, rare break pad replace.. that is it!

Depending on how well done your windows/seals were in your Tesla, road noise is all over the place. I got lucky, and my 2021 Model 3 Performance has very little wind noise, even at speed (100mph+) about the same as most mid-sized sedans. But now I can gear the interior rattles!!! ;) (They're minor)

Just one thing to add is that the voice control and recognition is top notch. It may seem that you need to use the touch screen for everything but voice does it all so seamlessly. It works so well with text messaging too. Also the google maps integrated GPS navigation is a big plus.
Yeah not completely impartial, 90% of the cars function can be controlled by voice, which is a lot safer than manual controls, also the handling and ride are very good, I've owned, mercedes (c class), Audi (A4 & A3) and jaguars. (XE & XF), and this is a far better car than any of those, as for road noise, you notice it more because there is no engine noise, but sound in Decibels, Tesla M3 is a lot better than an ICE car. Finally Tesla's come fully loaded, if you are comparing it to Any competitor you need to compare it to the top trim level in any Audi, Mercedes or BMW. VW group have openly admitted they are 7 years behind Tesla in motor and battery technology, and 10 years behind the full self driving 10 beta version being tested in the US. The ultra minimalist but high tech interior, brutal acceleration, and a basically charge-anywhere network sold me. I still have my previous, older, manual porche cayman s, but ill be honest, i dont drive it nearly as much as i thought I would. You can also have auto-lane-change, navigate-on-autopilot, auto-park and smart-summon without the "FSD Capability" package. The "Enhanced Autopilot" package is just £3,400 and WAY more advanced than any ACC and lane keep of the competition. I’m so tired of this narrative that many people in automotive media make that the model 3 isn’t a great looking car. If you own one, you will get a lot of compliments from people. It isn’t boring, or frog like. ...definitely not like a Prius. The only thing you might criticize it for is it is rather Porsche-esqe in the front. But that would involve admitting some Porsches aren’t that great looking; which the automotive press would never do.
This presents the best argument, at least for me personally, to use a left-hand drive vehicle. Being right-handed, I imagine it would be very difficult for me to operate the touch screen accurately with my left hand.
All of the commonly used driving controls for the Tesla Model 3 are on the steering wheel or stalks: turn signals, wipers, autopilot controls, audio controls, phone answering, voice command, etc. The Tesla *touchscreen is usually NOT used while actually driving* except for an occasional glance at the large speedometer or map. Tesla's ergonomics are excellent and VERY easy to use. Tesla's Long Range Model 3 in this review competes very favorably with the BMW 330i. Both are competent family saloons. Neither is intended to be a performance car per se. In contrast, the Tesla Model 3 Performance outperforms the BMW M3 and feels and drives better doing it. The Tesla is also quicker around a race track. Drive one.

Good review and quite like the style and format - but very odd to pass criticism of excessive noise in the cabin when doing 114mph (which you would never be able to replicate on public roads) while on concrete section test track. Thankfully it’s rare to find overly noisy in any car, concrete road in most parts of the UK.
How to identify the presenter experience by methods of opening the charge Port on a Model 3. Amateur: Select screen to "charge", presses "Open Charge Port". Semi-Pro: Walks to the port with the Tesla charger, and presses the button on the male plug. Professional: Press / release right hand steering button, and simply states: "Open Butt hole". Now you know where you stand and you may want to consider a new day job. Perhaps 5th gear is hiring? /S.
NGL, this isn't a really popular take on Tesla. I think the other manufacturers have more to learn from Tesla than Tesla does from them. Cool vid though
Not even close. Check out Monroe Live. That's a serious and balanced review of the model 3. Not only does He tear it down for all its faults, he praises it for the continued improvements, and industry changing innovation.
There are quite a few EV's i really like. However if i were to purchase one i would always go for Tesla. The one and only reason is their charging infrastructure is 100 times better than anything else out there.
Good fun but missed the mark a couple of times. The main is comparing it to the comfort of an iPace. This is deliberate, it is supposed to be the more sporty and lively version. Those looking for iPace style comfort are supposed to buy the more similarly priced Model S. Also the cheap shot at finishing when talking about the initial production run years ago erodes the impartiality. Spoilt it somewhat. The wind noise pre-2020 is valid, and 2021 has massively improved this including double glazed windows. Even so, the top 10 after market videos still recommend the trim you can add around the door frame. I'll get this when I order my Model 3. Fun video, thanks for the upload. Phillip.
I’ve watched 4 or 5 reviews all saying that the double glazing, and noise in general, hasn’t improved at all in 2021 model. I’d be interested to know your sources.
The one really cool thing with Tesla Model 3 is the aftermarket Tuning scene. Its getting huge. The laptimes they set are stunning around Buttonwillow, and pretty soon the Taisan will go under one minute at Tsukuba with standard motors and interior. It actually beat the Taycan Turbo with a minute going around Fuji Raceway for 55km.
You hear the wind/tires because there is no engine. At a certain point they can dampen things sure, our Model X is pretty quiet (to me at least), but I still want to be able to hear ambulances or other emergency vehicles, and given that there is no engine, wind/tires are what is left.
Good review though overall. I don't disagree that their build quality is all over the map. But I don't care, function over form. I don't have to go to a "petrol" station anymore, like ever. Long trips are maybe 10% of my use case, maybe even less, so I don't even get that much out of my free supercharging.
“I prefer taking over from the computer and using my computer up here” Sez the guy from a small island doing 3 laps on a track. Try doing a proper road trip with Autopilot and get back to me... it’s a game changer. Leaving on a 3000 mile trip tomorrow and glad I’m not driving the 2013 Honda as regular cruise control now seems annoying and anachronistic. Btw, not wedded to Tesla... looking into a Hyundai with lane keep for my father.
Best part mentioned, but that I greatly differ with: The weight is all low and evenly distributed, so cornering is a dream, even when you have some speed up. Very nice even over pothole roads. Good pickup, quiet, good range. *get the filter for a/c intake if you drive in traffic. No need to breath gas fumes in the EV!
Really surprised they weren't more surprised about the 0-60 time. Never mind beating a BMW M3 top speed, it beats many Lamborghini and Ferrari models 0-60 and it's a 4 door saloon with heavy batteries and a full glass roof!!! Incredible.
Interesting take on reviews. Seems there's this *need* to have a counterpoint to every point. The interior noise comments were a bit odd. The wind noise is definitely not louder than most cars in the same segment. It's more noticed because of the lack of other noises. And the ride, as well. It's firm, but quite compliant. "Sporty" would be the best descriptor, and it matches its quite-good, unflappable handling. Really, the overall ownership experience - how this product approaches solving the transportation problem - is why this car is so compelling. It's why I finally decided to buy one.
I wish I could afford one! Guess my trusty '09 Audi A3 Cabriolet will have to suffice for now. "Trusty" now that I've replaced the engine and the mechatronic unit at great cost and still have an airbag light that won't stay off after multiple attempts by two different mechanics. Sigh.
It must have been the weather because the 2020 Tesla 3 dual motor has been tested many times 0-60 at 4.2 seconds and under. With the software upgrade for $2000 it will do 0-60 tested at 3.8 seconds...same as the 2015 Corvette C7 Z51.
I didn't. You buy high end BMW-3-Series-performance with much better space, technology and better standard equipment for much lower total cost of ownership. Something has to give.
@@NO3V why would you waste your money on something that loses half its value after 2 years and becomes worthless once the warranty expires. Same thing applies for all German vehicles really. Tco lower on a bmw is that a joke? They are high maintenance vehicles.

A very good review, excellent, saying all that it is to say. When you look at the performance and the price tag, Tesla M3 is the people's-supercar, it is not as expensive as a Ferrari or things like that, but it can challenge them and at the intersection, Tesla is almost unbeaten.......
Way too litte focus on the proven battery tech and worldwide supercharging and supercharging speeds! Kills the ID3+ ID4 by such a wide margin it is insane.
Yeah, that supercharger network. It's why I'm currently waiting for the $25,000 compact from Tesla rather than getting a used Bolt ($16,000 for those if anyone is interested)
He's a good presenter but very different IMO. Chris is much more of a speed/performance merchant and would have been describing the performance handling and braking in a lot more detail... and probably even drifting that.
I just bought a model 3 performance. Other electric cars are fine, but they can only use the public charging network which is variable at best. The Tesla can use that too, plus all of the Supercharger network. That’s the issue with other EVs versus Tesla. Elon’s investment in the Supercharger infrastructure has put them in an enviable position. The other manufacturers have taken way too long to get started at this. Also Tesla is a car designed by visionaries, the others seem (to me) to be just stuck in their traditional thinking.
@@Ineverreadreplies that’s exactly it. The ‘others’ are so predictable. I was a regular BMW buyer but now my 440i just looks and feels so last-century. Well we drive a BMW 320I GT from 2016 and a 2019 Tesla Model 3 (Long range) and I have to say the Tesla drives much better. Far superior throttle response and cornering around a roundabout I can do it much faster with Tesla 3. It has just much more grip due to it`s all wheel drive. Is everything better than the BMW? No the used plastics are of a lesser quality and some fit and finishes are less premium. Both cars cost the same amount of money when we bought the new (around 60k€). So from that perspective very equal. Normally my wife drives up to 500 km a week and she always can charge, around twice a week, the car at night on the drive way. So no more spending time to go to a gas station.. We only kept the BMW as a second family car because we also have a caravan (I`m Dutch. :) ) which was too heavy for the Tesla to tow. But if I really what to have some fun driving a car I take my old Peugeot 205 CTI....
I’m very curious...about the 2 or 3 other electric cars he says are more fun to drive. If something has clear from the beginning is that the model 3 is the closed of all the electric cars to a fast BMW which, for decades has been the king of fund and engaging driving. It makes me serious doubt of how much research he really has done and how much is just empty words to sound knowledge. Not good enough for me.
The Model 3 makes me want to drive instead of seeing driving as a chore. That in itself makes the car valuable. Wouldn't mind them releasing a 30K M3 but gotta wait a few years until their battery costs drop.
Hi Ollie, you said at the very end of the video that "there are a copule more electric cars [...] more fun to drive than this". Which ones? I would like to know your opinion. Thanks.
He didn't say because they are not in the same price stratosphere, let alone bracket. It will be Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan, and Audi eTron GT. Whatever they advertise the "starting price" bank on over 100k as opposed to 38k. Phillip.
I love this car! The one thing that turns me off about it, and is very important to me, the lack of physical knobs and buttons for volume, channel, a/c, etc.. I HATE having to do everything by touch, it's counter productive, unintuitive, and slower, and potentially more dangerous...some could say that nit picking, I don't care, it becomes a real annoyance when there's very little else to complain about.
There is (vey good) voice command. Auto lights, auto main beams, auto wipers, climate control. control of hifi on steering wheel - not much need for buttons in the real world. Plus legacy auto have figured out that touch screens are way cheaper than wiring up endless buttons - so they are fast disappearing anyway.
Once you use the autopilot with each update you will see the improvements. At first when the auto lane change was introduced it was not very confident sometimes. But now I feel like I am driving but I only have my hands on the wheel. Love every single thing about my model 3 and couldn't be more satisfied with my decision
I thought that would be the case 6 years ago and yet there are still people moaning now. I think they come to these videos just to tell everyone they don't like top gear without the old trio.
The fact that everyone is praising this guy and Harris, totally accepting them proves your point wrong. The other guys are just absolute shit. Where are the haters on this video talking about the old 3?
Disappointed in the level of wind & tyre noise. And this is the latest model as well. To me comfort and quietness are top of the list. Did I forget speed & supercharing, silly me!

I feel I have to disagree, the S hasn’t aged well, it’s a boring design like the Mondeo equivalent for EVs
The S looks like a Vauxhall

I would love to have one too but sadly too expensive for me so i am close to buy a BMW i3 insted. But beleve me, the Tesla is the one i would have IF i had the money.
zero maintenance is huge deal.. 10yr projected maintenance cost should be under 3,000$ with less than 10% probability of major issue over the period. Compared to that.. Porsche Macan will cost 20,000$ with 80% chance of major issue for the same period of time. Model Y only needs tire rotation every 12k mile, rare break pad replace.. that is it!

Can't say I particularly trust Top Gear to give a completely impartial review of a Tesla.
I like the format of the video but some incorrect info, a LR will not do in the excess of 160mph that's a performance model, the LR actually does 145mph. Also the battery is 82Kwh and not 75KWh.
You can also have auto-lane-change, navigate-on-autopilot, auto-park and smart-summon without the "FSD Capability" package. The "Enhanced Autopilot" package is just £3,400 and WAY more advanced than any ACC and lane keep of the competition. (Especially once the EU lifts some of the stupid regulation limits [don't know about UK].)

A model 3 from the rear under s streetlight looks superb! Fat wide low slung haunches.

Good review though overall. I don't disagree that their build quality is all over the map. But I don't care, function over form. I don't have to go to a "petrol" station anymore, like ever.
Sigh.

With all Due respect - That Track is well Known to be Very noisy.

Bought one without even test driving it.
Christian von Koenigsegg: *effusively praises Model 3*
This guy: 👁️👄👁️
Once you use the autopilot with each update you will see the improvements. At first when the auto lane change was introduced it was not very confident sometimes. But now I feel like I am driving but I only have my hands on the wheel. Love every single thing about my model 3 and couldn't be more satisfied with my decision
This is actually excellent reviewing! People are mad that things are different but I imagine in 1 or 2 years there wont be any haters left.
Top Gear's new reviewer and also Writer in Top Gear's website, Ollie Kew. Seeing him in videos. I want to see Stephen Dobie in video reviews.

Disappointed in the level of wind & tyre noise. And this is the latest model as well. To me comfort and quietness are top of the list. Did I forget speed & supercharing, silly me!
