Nice video Gary. I agree your favourite shot is the best of the day. I think you did right to remove the digger and the light streaking through the clouds was brilliantly dramatic. Having said that I quite liked the image with all the vans and things in it. Told a story of that particular day. Another warm and engaging video. Brilliant.
First Man Photography - Cheers again Adam, very kind sir. Think we both know just how frustrating it can be but soldiering on is definitely the order of the day. Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻
Two of my favourite togs having a chat. All we need is for Mr Heaton to join and we'll have a full house. Cheers for all the content guys, you are both a great inspiration. Gary, shame you weren't at Seaham when the tide is higher as two min down from that pier is an old wheel on the shore. Google the wheel Seaham.
John Haswell Photography - hi John, Mr Heaton will never stoop to our level :) Adam (1st man photography) is great, feet well and truly planted. If we get Paul G Johnson too it'll be a full house. . WOW now I am excited. I've just Googled the wheel. Is it an old train set of wheels? Where is it please John? I'll be going back definitely
Gary Gough you're all great. I've seen some of Paul's vids so I'll definitely subscribe. The wheel is about 2 minutes walk from the pier. You park at nose's point car park and walk towards that pier. Before you get there though you take a cut down to the beach and it's right there. The next beach is blast beach which featured in the start of one of the alien movies. It's also where I took my first landscape pic ... Here it is flic.kr/p/SoH4PK
Gary, The images "scream QUALITY." Not only did you adapt, but the phrase "adapt and overcome," comes to mind, You did very well, and it was, indeed, worth it. I think the mid-day shot was the strongest. Molto chiaroscuro (but with a muted palette!). Thank-You, Mike
So positive Gary, a great example to us . In your words “ absolutely fantastic, awesome “ attitude. Like the simple pics too. Got to go now , “ awsesome light calling “ MJ
Great video as per usual, Gary. Fab images, particularly the shot of the rails in front of the lighthouse - a simple composition that most of us would miss. Thanks for sharing!
Well done Gary.Managed to get some very nice shots against the odds. Seaham looked as if it might be worth another visit.Thank you so much for taking the time and considerable effort it takes to post your excellent videos.
Great video Gary with some awesome images. I love the way you make the most of the situation put in front of you and the explanation you give as to why you did what you did, the sign of a true professional. Looking forward as always to your next installment👍👍👍👍👍👍
Answer to Q1 - yes, and to Q2 - yes - Alwasy do the best you can with what you have, and it's always worth getting out. You have to be in it to win it as they say. Just spent a lovely 16 mins on Sunday morning watching another great video, thanks Gary. Agree about your favourite shot, although the portrait one with the very dark sky at the top (6:22) is a close 2nd for me.
I get what you mean about "portrait", but to me that's what makes them different from the norm, and every now and then one just works. Each to their own - the beauty of photography.Looking forward to your next video now.
Lighthouses, something I don't shoot enough, actually we don't have too many around here, but I think you've inspired me to get to the local ones 👍👍 And a massive thanks for the shoutout Gary, really appreciate it mate 😊 The UA-cam community sure is a great thing ☺️☺️
Another nice job Gary, a few miles north of Sunderland at South Shields is a structure called the Herd Groyne Lighthouse, its bright red on legs and a great subject to photograph. Might be worth you having a look.
Awesome video Gary. I actually really liked that image where the sky took up most of the top two thirds - I thought the sky looked bloody amazing! Cheers for sharing pal.
Great vlog again Gary lovely images of Roker pier and that wonderful light,me and my wife visited this area a few wks ago.i was very disappointed by all the trucks and cranes,my Photoshop skills are very lacking so was a no for me.but we drove a bit further up the coast to Tynemouth a great spot with two piers and a castle on the cliffs to boot
Christian Rawson - hi Christian, yeah it's a little frustrating but theses things happen I guess. I've noted Tynemouth as another place to visit. Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻
Inspirational Gary, I always enjoy your videos. I've been doing some long exposures on moving water recently and enjoying it. I usually do portraits and weddings so it is a relaxing change. I hope the dog is doing well. Best wishes.
Nick Hills - hi Nick, same here re weddings and portraits. This is why I started the channel. An excuse to get out of the studio 1 day a week. Glad you liked the video again 👍🏻👍🏻
Yes you did do well and yes I agree that getting out makes it worthwhile the vast majority of the time regardless of the images. It's a bit like fishing, one of my other hobbies but pretty much replaced with photography. When you go out you never know if you are going to catch anything but frequently you are in nice locations, enjoying all sorts of weather and often on your own with no pressures from you day to day life. It becomes your sole thought and can be very good for your well being making it nearly always worth it. There are a couple of fishing sayings that could apply to photography. A bad days fishing (photography) is still better than a good day at work. The other is - it is called fishing not catching for a reason much in the same way that photography is drawing the light that is there but not necessarily catching great light. Another top video and very useful for me as I plan to visit Roker Pier on my way down to some Union business in Leeds next month. Seaham or Staithes were my other targets.
Hi Simon, Glad you liked the video and a huge thanks for the site and AP recommendations. I don't really bother checking the cloud reports and stuff, I only check the basic weather. More often than not as long as the weather doesn't seem horrendous I just go and see what I get. There's always a shot to be had. I also love the challenge you're very often faced with. Makes you a stronger photographer. I can certainly imagine how useful those websites/aps can be though, especially for star shots where you really want a clear sky etc. Cheers 👍🏻
Hi Gary, great video and some really nice shots. Love the laid back natural style and, like On Patrol (love his work too), you've inspired me to get out and shoot some more piers. Cheers, Ian
Gary, another excellent video from a part of the world where I live. IMO your mages were stunning. I have checked out your latest recommendation (OnPatrol Photography) and it's an excellent channel...thank you.
Hi Gary. There is an app called ‘clear outside’ which i use for finding out how much cloud there will be for my astronomy/astrophotography. It gives the percentage of cloud compared to clear sky.
nice to see my home town gary and theres so much to photograph along the coast to south shields, so hope you come back, and seaham has a place called chemical beach at noses point and it was 2 minutes from where you were, google seaham wheels to see what i mean. love the videos mate keep them coming.
Great video, Gary. I was interested in your comments towards the end about the glare on the sea and harbour wall causing issues. Would a polariser have worked in this situation to remove the excessive glare?
Tony Turner - hi Tony, to a certain degree it would of helped a little. I could of inverted my ND grad too but you've got to draw the line somewhere. Besides I'm not a fan of polarising filters. I like a little sheen on the water. 👍🏻👍🏻
It can be painful when you turn up to capture an image and the focal point is covered in scaffold or whatever, still you managed to get some great images Gary. A great location and another superb video
Roker is my go to place for sunrise shots as I only live 10-15 minutes away and every day gives a different photo! Great video and loaded with info. Also liked the trip to Seaham (pronounced Sea-m ;) ). That light house yields great photos when the waves are up in the winter! Nice one Gary, Subscribed!
Hi David and welcome to my little channel. I've earmarked the lighthouse so I can come back during a storm and high tide. I bet there's some amazing wave shots to be had! 👍🏻
Carl Pavitt - hi Carl, glad you liked it and thanks a mil for saying. Yes it's the 1st series 70-200 mm lens. It's a cracking lens, it gets used to death :)
Hi Gary great video filmed on my local patch, Olive about 20min from broker and work in Sunderland. I got shots from a similar spot last week when the tall ships were leaving the river Wear. It was packed with people but got some ok shots. I made some stupid mistakes like shooting in basic jpegs and at high iso, I didn't really pay attention to settings as is was a family day out as was rushing shots just to record the event rather than looking for compositions. I will be using this video for getting some sunrise shots later in the year. As for seaham pier I understand access is only permitted to members of the angling club who have key cards or so a colleague tells me. Subbed your channel ATB Steve.
Hi Gary. Nice to see you in my original neck of the woods 😃. Some great shots as always. Picked a good time for the pier with all the work going on! They're opening up the emergency tunnel built into the pier so it'll be open to the public. PS Just wondered if you managed to get and shots of Penshaw Monument while you were up that way. Also did you know about the new bridge that's being built over the river and due to open early next year?
Hi Paul, never heard of the monument. I just googled it and it looks fab. I'll have to organize another trip. Tunnel? what tunnel? Didn't know anything about a bridge either. This was my first time of visiting Sunderland. Clearly I'm going to have to come back :) 👍🏻
It's a pity you can't get on the Pier anymore, the hand rails have some nice life saving rings on it (or what ever they are called). Hopefully the work they are doing on it will see it re opened to the public. Loving the shot's of the lighthouse. There are some nice shot's to be had further down just south of Seaham at Nose's Point. And yes it's always worth getting out!
Well done sir... I agree with Adam @ First Man, the "digger" had to go, we call them "excavators " here in the states... I subbed after watching your latest vlog & as I can find the time, working my way in reverse order, this video being the 6th I think. I just love all you Brits with your love/passion of all things photography... I like your approach Gary & the way you are able to adapt to not always a perfect set of conditions. Bill Farr...
Hi Bill, Thank you, Very kind of you to say. Thanks for the Sub too 👍 If you live in the UK Bill, you have to adapt to crappy conditions or you would never leave your house :) We holiday in the States every year btw. Love the positive attitude of the Yanks :)
Hi Gary I had the same experience as you at Seaham lighthouse, bloody annoying rather than frustrating but I suppose in these days of wrap you up in cotton wool health and safety nanny state we know whats best for you this is what's to be expected (i'm not always misery guts) Another great vlog by the way.
Hi Gary, lovely images. I really like seascapes, lighthouses and piers/jettys etc. One thing though, is it just me or this music sounds like christmas is coming? Btw I discovered your channel from jason's shoutout.
Marieta Tsoukoukou - lol glad you liked the video. Thanks for taking time out to watch it, means a lot. Jason's a great lad. Welcome to my channel btw. 2nd person to mention Christmas lol. It wasn't my intention 😆😆
Allan Marshall - Hi Allan, never been a keen user of the polariser. I have a couple but never use them. I prefer the sheen on top of the water 😁. Thanks for taking the time out to view my video. means the world 👍🏻👍🏻
Alrite Gary! Could you do with some website suggestions for predicting cloud cover? I use a few to help me chase clear skies for astro photograph, would be happy to share!
As long as it's not pee'ing it down I always go anyway. Sometimes cloud is way better than clear. Please share them though. I want to shoot some astro stuff so that would be great. Cheers 👍🏻
So! There are 3 sources I use, yr.no, a Scandinavian weather service with very accurate info, skippysky.com.au (Thanks to Mr Heaton for that site!), an Ozzy site with easy to use cloud radar charts and an app on my phone called MetroEarth, which allows you to drop a pin in a location and get a cloud cover read out for across the day. You could easily get away with using just yr.no for general photography but I use a combination of the 3 because alot of the dark skies I enjoy are 2hrs+ away and there isn't much photography you can be doing in the dead of night when it's cloudy ;) I've been mostly doing my astro stuff over in Anglesey but I know Yorkshire has some cracking dark skies so any locationrecommendations you've got got Gary am all ears :) ( to get the most out of yr, search for you location, hit 'hour by hour' then hit 'detailed'. The site will give you an hourly breakdown of cloud cover, rain, wind etc)
Hi gary, you have done well, yes Number 1 Q yes Number 2 Q, was waiting for you to put your blog on tonight!! must want my head looking at, no seriously it is a very good blog, with all the bad that happens as well as the good, down to earth p.s. was that your dog? he/she seemed lively. Phil
Nice to see you in my neck of the woods. By the way although it's spelt Seaham it's pronounced Sea-am without the h. Seaham was a mining town and the harbour was all about shipping coal.
Hi Gary, not sure why but I always attract the thumb-downers luckily i'm thick skinned :) Only 1 so far, it must be because I uploaded it after their bed time. I was watching Casey Neistats video (ua-cam.com/video/4N365ETpKEg/v-deo.html) about a "Make-a-Wish" guy who is terminally ill and wanted to spend time with him. It was quite a moving video and it has nearly 800 thumbs down. OK so it has 91k thumbs-up but still. It's so sad. Thanks for taking time out to watch my video. It means a lot. Here have one back 👍🏻
I really don't understand why people get so concerned because someone puts a thumb down? It really doesn't mean that you're public enemy number one, it's just someone expressing an opinion. If I got bitter & twisted every time someone had a different opinion than me, I'd have hung myself by now! The example Gary quotes of the video of a a terminally ill person, maybe the people that put a thumbs down were just too upset by the video, an acceptable reason for not liking it I would have thought? Anyway, whinge over. I loved this video Gary and definitely worth the trip.
Mick Hursey 🐟haha I knew I would catch one ,you are right it's up to the watcher if it's 👍or 👎but I just leave the like /not like alone if I don't like a vlog just like the TV I can choose turn off or in UA-cams case unsubscribe 👍
Hi Karl - lol When I uploaded the video having worked on it for an afternoon, I thought to myself, the music sounded a little Christmassy. I wondered if anyone else would notice :) I just liked the music because it sounded happy and dramatic, didn't think it sound like Christmas music at all originally. 😆😆😆
Top video buddy. You will have to show me how to remove big things from my image as I might be doing a collaboration soon with someone that I might need to crop out ;)
Frustrating isn't it ! Visited that pier earlier this year & found the same problem. Think if you become friends with a fisherman you might be able to get access to the pier....maybe
Oh hi Lynne... I tried speaking to the fishermen but they were real jobsworths. P.S. I have you earmarked for a shout-out. Is that ok? I'll do it next week 👍🏻
Gary Gough ....that's a shame , can't understand why they'd be like that, not like you'd be disturbing the fish is it 😲 Hey, a shout out , that'd be very kind kind of you Gary , much appreciated 👍
They said I couldn't go forward of the gates because of Health and Safety pffff They pointed out there were no hand rails. OMG - I switched off. No worries at all Lynne. You keep up the great work too xx
Beautiful work Gary. I enjoy your demeanor, your sense of humor and your beautiful photagraphy. All the best ! Gil, Largo, FL USA aka SemperFiGuy instragram.com/gil.barrett

Awesome John. A massive thanks 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I'll definitely go and photograph them both. Love your shot btw. You should vlog!
Gary,
The images "scream QUALITY."
Not only did you adapt, but the phrase "adapt and overcome," comes to mind, You did very well, and it was, indeed, worth it.
I think the mid-day shot was the strongest. Molto chiaroscuro (but with a muted palette!).
Thank-You,
Mike
Mike Mitchell - I'll take that as a pat on the back all day long. Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻
The star is your dog.
Congratulations beautiful photos.
I live in front of the sea and your photos are an inspiration to me.
Thank you.
Carlos Fernandes - thank you Carlos. Typically it's always the dog that steals the show :)
Lovely work Gary. You made the absolute best of the conditions you had. Greg
Photografia Australis - cheers Greg
So positive Gary, a great example to us . In your words “ absolutely fantastic, awesome “ attitude.
Like the simple pics too.
Got to go now , “ awsesome light calling “
MJ
Thank you Mark
Great video as per usual, Gary. Fab images, particularly the shot of the rails in front of the lighthouse - a simple composition that most of us would miss. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Gary, lovely images under the conditions, thanks again for another good video.
Elzbieta Arno - thanks for saying, cheers 👍🏻👍🏻

Always a pleasure Steve and thanks for taking time out to watch them. Much appreciated 👍🏻
Brilliant video Gary . Like you said its always worth getting out and seeing somewhere new .
jon graham - especially if you're married, even your ears need a rest. Glad you liked the video. Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻
Great video Gary with some awesome images. I love the way you make the most of the situation put in front of you and the explanation you give as to why you did what you did, the sign of a true professional. Looking forward as always to your next installment👍👍👍👍👍👍
Tim Blake - Cheers Tim, soldiering on is always the order of the day. Thanks again for taking time out to watch it too. Cheers 👍🏻
I really like your style of presentation. The photos were really nice.
D Welker - Oh thanks for saying, very kind 👍🏻👍🏻
Answer to Q1 - yes, and to Q2 - yes - Alwasy do the best you can with what you have, and it's always worth getting out. You have to be in it to win it as they say. Agree about your favourite shot, although the portrait one with the very dark sky at the top (6:22) is a close 2nd for me.
Hi Mark, ditto on the choices although I'm not a fan of the "portrait" shaped landscape pictures. I keep taking them though :) 👍🏻
I get what you mean about "portrait", but to me that's what makes them different from the norm, and every now and then one just works. Each to their own - the beauty of photography.Looking forward to your next video now.
Cheers Mark
Great shots and in overcoming the obsticles.
Cheers Allan
your pictures always look stunning
Thanks a million Gilbert 👍🏻👍🏻
Some days are better than others Gary, but like you said, it's usually worth getting out anyway!
always worth getting up for :) Cheers Chris 👍🏻
Lighthouses, something I don't shoot enough, actually we don't have too many around here, but I think you've inspired me to get to the local ones 👍👍 And a massive thanks for the shoutout Gary, really appreciate it mate 😊 The UA-cam community sure is a great thing ☺️☺️

Great episode. Always great inspiration .
Can't wait to get out. Stuck sick at home .
Frederick Toutain - oh no Frederick that sucks. Thanks and get well soon 👍🏻👍🏻
Gary Gough it happens to all of us. Just glad I have something to watch
If it was always easy everyone would be making great images lol. Fantastic video as always Gary and what a good job you made of removing the digger
It was easy, I just grabbed the keys and drove it away :) Cheers 👍🏻
Another great video Gary you show the British landscape in a true light .the camera settings and your thoughts for picture's is great.
Thank you for saying, very kind
Great stuff Gary, my hometown........
Hi Colin, yeah it's a great place. Looking forward to going back when the tide is in and it's stormy.
Love watching you channel Gary. Some neat shots there 👌
ELTIN JONES - Cheers Eltin, very kind. Thank you for taking time out to watch them 👍🏻
Good stuff, Gary - I enjoyed the process and the pictures. Keep it up!
cheers, Thanks for taking the time out to watch it too, means a lot 👍🏻
Another nice job Gary, a few miles north of Sunderland at South Shields is a structure called the Herd Groyne Lighthouse, its bright red on legs and a great subject to photograph. Might be worth you having a look.
Hi Jim, it looks fab. It's a shame the sea doesn't cover the feet during a high tide though. Thanks for recommending it 👍
Awesome video Gary. I actually really liked that image where the sky took up most of the top two thirds - I thought the sky looked bloody amazing! Cheers for sharing pal.
Henry Turner - glad you liked it and thanks for saying. Cheers Henry 👍🏻👍🏻

Hi gary i'm new to your channel and viewing your vlogs and lovin every minute of them

Hi Gary. There is an app called ‘clear outside’ which i use for finding out how much cloud there will be for my astronomy/astrophotography. It gives the percentage of cloud compared to clear sky.

You should! Cheers Tony 👍👍
Fantastic shot. I love the composition with the railing in b&w. What lens do you use is it the l series 70-200mm?

Hi Gary, the Seaham shot with the glare on the water, would a soft grad inverted work to reduce it? No legs. Great video.
Hi Nicky, it would of helped a bit but the sun was blinding. I'll get the shot next time i'm there :)
Great location and well worth the tip pick me up next time lol
You're on Lee 👍

Hi Gary, lovely images. I really like seascapes, lighthouses and piers/jettys etc. One thing though, is it just me or this music sounds like christmas is coming? Btw I discovered your channel from jason's shoutout.
Marieta Tsoukoukou - lol glad you liked the video. Thanks for taking time out to watch it, means a lot. Jason's a great lad. Welcome to my channel btw. 2nd person to mention Christmas lol. It wasn't my intention 😆😆
Loving the latest set of videos 😊 Still waiting for your whitby trip ?? Haha!! Also mate there is some great apps that tell you the cloud amount 👍
david ball - I've made half a video at Whitby. I went a couple of weeks back but I need to finish it off. Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻
excellent looking forward to seeing it! love whitby! Keep up the great work mate :-)
Do you not own a Lee Polariser Gary. Help with the glare on the water. Nice work and love your approach to Photography.
You could easily get away with using just yr.no for general photography but I use a combination of the 3 because alot of the dark skies I enjoy are 2hrs+ away and there isn't much photography you can be doing in the dead of night when it's cloudy ;)
I've been mostly doing my astro stuff over in Anglesey but I know Yorkshire has some cracking dark skies so any locationrecommendations you've got got Gary am all ears :)
( to get the most out of yr, search for you location, hit 'hour by hour' then hit 'detailed'. The site will give you an hourly breakdown of cloud cover, rain, wind etc)
interesting qestion
👍🏻👍🏻
Hi gary, you have done well, yes Number 1 Q yes Number 2 Q, was waiting for you to put your blog on tonight!! must want my head looking at, no seriously it is a very good blog, with all the bad that happens as well as the good, down to earth p.s. was that your dog? he/she seemed lively. Phil
glad you liked it. Not my dog just a random dog being walked. It was gorgeous, I just had to have a tickle :)
How long did it take to remove the digger in post production?
30 seconds Charles
I would have taken all day.
Some great shots! But that music almost made me stand up to watch . .hahahahaa!
MrFreakwent - a little more dramatic than normal 👍🏻👍🏻
Epic mate. This is my part of the world. Sea-ham is pronounced seahim. Sunderland is Sunland. 😂😂Keep the local vlogs coming Gaz👍
bivboy10 - local dialect. I'm not so hot at my own native tongue lol
Nice to see you in my neck of the woods. By the way although it's spelt Seaham it's pronounced Sea-am without the h. Seaham was a mining town and the harbour was all about shipping coal.
Oh cool. I thought it was a fantastic place. Definitely going back :)
Nice vlog Gary ,can't believe you have a thumbs down there's always one 😂👍
Just one question, why the Christmas music? ;)
Embrace the digger!
David A Griffiths - lol love it 🚜🚜👍🏻👍🏻
Some nice images mate but whereas Scooby
Dean Clifford - hi Dean, nobody cares about my welfare just Scooby's :)
He's fine thanks. He wasn't interested in getting up at 3am. Lazy thing 😁😁
Top video buddy. You will have to show me how to remove big things from my image as I might be doing a collaboration soon with someone that I might need to crop out ;)
Sometimes leaving big sexy good looking artifacts in the shot can enhance your video ;)
You aren't my kind of sexy ;)
Never knock what you haven't tried. Getting a little weird now. PMSL
You went to sunderland/Roker??have you recoverd? 🤣
Yea canny location actually ...i used to live overlooking Roker Pier!
Yeah, it's a cracking place to photograph
Frustrating isn't it ! Visited that pier earlier this year & found the same problem. Think if you become friends with a fisherman you might be able to get access to the pier....maybe
Oh hi Lynne... I tried speaking to the fishermen but they were real jobsworths.
P.S. I have you earmarked for a shout-out. Is that ok? I'll do it next week 👍🏻
Gary Gough ....that's a shame , can't understand why they'd be like that, not like you'd be disturbing the fish is it 😲
Hey, a shout out , that'd be very kind kind of you Gary , much appreciated 👍
They said I couldn't go forward of the gates because of Health and Safety pffff They pointed out there were no hand rails. OMG - I switched off.
No worries at all Lynne. You keep up the great work too xx
Gary Gough ....the world has gone H&S mad ! How have we survived this long without all these "safeguards"......
Great video again Gary very enjoyable, check out Christian schoter channel deserves more subs.
Shaun.M. - hi Shaun, thanks again. I'll go check him out cheers for the recommendation 👍🏻👍🏻
Beautiful work Gary. I enjoy your demeanor, your sense of humor and your beautiful photagraphy.
All the best !
