My dad was one of Disney's earliest employees. I have a photo of him standing next to Walt in front of the studio in 1926. They were making the Alice comedies. Before Mickey Mouse.

I was born in Long Beach in '59. Grew up in Orange County. Typical LA kid, I think. I think late '76 or so, before I graduated in '77, I finally got hired to work at Disneyland! It was a dream come true... for about the first week. I was... eh hem... a Custodial Host! Yep, yessireebob!! I got to sweep the streets of the Magic Kingdom! Lol!! I got $2.65 p/hr... minimum wage. A lot of being on your feet! My dogs howled at the end of a 12-14 shift!! There was a Danish guy, a young married guy, who transfered out of Sunkist House (known as an outside consession) and did the same job I did, but had seniority. He made $10p/hr!!! In 1976-77!! Holy cow!!! Well, I was still in high school and he was, after all, married. I couldn't hold a grudge. He was a great guy too! One early morning, I think it may have been a Saturday or Sunday... I was assigned to Main Street USA where the Sleeping Beauty Castle is. Those of us who worked out amongst the public were considered "on stage". Behind the scenes was "back stage". Just before the park opened this day, a gentleman was sitting on one of those park benches that were everywhere. I was a bit confused because I couldn't work out in my mind how he'd gotten in to the park before it had actually opened. The streets were still wet from having been washed before opening, and the air was still cool. This man engaged me in pleasant conversation, and so I stopped to talk with him. Honestly, I can't remember all these years later what we talked about, but he left me smiling and feeling that all was right in the world, at least that morning. Eventually he got up, shook my hand and left. I noticed one of the staff had been looking at me (us), but had remained a respectful distance until the man had left. He came up to me and asked me how my conversation had been. I thought it odd he would care to ask, as we were always encouraged to be polite and friendly while on stage with guests. So I told him whatever it was we'd talked about. And he replied, "Do you know who you were just speaking to?" No, I said. He said, "That was Roy Disney!" Well, it was Roy E. Disney, son of Roy O., brother of Walt... So Walt's nephew. Anyway, I was left with the impression that Roy E. was a very personable fellow and didn't look down his nose at me or anyone else. And this is in keeping with how Walt & Roy were... Hard working, friendly mid-westerner's. I always felt it a privilege to have had that moment with a member of the Disney family and how nice I was treated. He could have been my own father, uncle or family. I have never forgotten about that. Hence my appreciation for your presentation here. In later years, I drove limos all over LA and never really knew the locales of this period between Missouri, and Burbank. Very interesting to see how here in America we don't value our own history as much to even provide a little sign. Whereas, in Holland where I used to live, so many places are remembered all over. Again, thank you!

I think Walt was a very nice man who gave us great entertainment. After all he gave us Hayley Mills who I loved in the sixties. I can remember seeing her movie "Summer Magic" on July 26 1963, my birthday. Walt gave us wholesome movies. Thanks for the look back and your mom was an attractive woman!

I worked as an ink and painter when I first started working in Los Angeles county in 1973. My boss was an art teacher at Pasadena City College. He eventually went to work for Disney Studios. My job title was officially "Cel Painter". We painted on acetate, but the sheets were originally made of celuloid.

♥️ Just watched! Loved it. When my husband was a boy living in Garden Grove he and his friends would collect bottles until they had enough to buy and admission ticket for .90 cents for general admission. At the time the ride-tender at Tom Sawyers’s island (dressed as a Union soldier) would allow them to play on the island all day as long as they didn’t bother other patrons! What a childhood! On a side note, after his dad retired from the US Navy, he worked as a reserve OC sheriff’s deputy at Knott’s Berry Farm!

When I worked at Squaw Valley years ago, the original designer of the refrigeration system came out to consult with us about re-opening the Blyth skating Arena.
I spent some time with him to found out that during the Olympics he had come to know Walt fairly well.
He said Walt was just fascinated by the system he designed and was pressing him with all kinds of questions. He wanted real snow at Disneyland, and ice in the Matterhorn. Of course it never came to pass.
Also knew Roger Broggie jr, who used to help Walt with his model railway in his back yard when he was a kid. He showed me his dad's original blueprint of the Lilly Belle, which I actually looked through. Fascinating guy.

This was a very interesting episode. Thank you so much Jeff and Sarah for sharing all of this great background to the Magic of Walt Disney and Disneyland.
I first visited Disneyland in 1958 IIRC. Main Street and, the rest of the park was almost barren of any shade trees. I kept my unused tickets for a long time. My friend and I bought extra ticket books for the better rides using, the better tickets.
What fun it was for a couple of 11 - 12 year old boys, spending morning until late afternoon roaming the different "Lands". I still favor Adventure and Frontier Land. Later years, my wife and I often visited just for the Country Bear Jamboree. So sad when they removed it.
Oh well, I let the Blues overtake me, sorry.
Thanks for sharing another great and informative video.

48 years ago when I joined LA Fire Dept. we would often refer to scary situations as "That was an E ticket ride." Referring to the most expensive attraction ticket at Disneyland and most scary. For many years we'd use that saying. In todays world, there are not too many people alive who recalls those E tickets. Cheers everyone.

I have a friend named Allen (he worked for years in the sound dept. on the "A" Stage) who's mom was "Tommie"; Walt's secretary up to when he died. When they built the (current) studio on Riverside Dr. during WWII, they had to build it in a way where it could quickly be converted into a hospital during an emergency. There are "nurses stations" built into the end of each hallway, which (in the 1980s at least), became the photocopy area for animators to make color copies of their work.

Jeff, I enjoy your channel. The garage of the first house, Walt Disney owned was the site the first Mickey Mouse cartoon was drawn. Ub Irwerks was the third partner of the two brothers. The Disney's did not have Oswald copyrighted and lost the character to Universal Studios. Iwerks did the drawing in that garage in secret as Disney also lost most of his animators to his distributor and was still under contract for the last Oswald. You are right, the Disney's had a very rough time. You do great research, Jeff. Your very accurate!

My mother worked there and spent the next 44 years with the studio. During WW2 she worked on Disney industrial films in the UK. Money transfers to the US were embargoed by the British Govt after the war. Walt Produced 2 feature films in the UK and brought them back instead. Kidnapped and Treasure Island if I recall. So Dear to My Heart is mistaken for one of the British films but it was filmed in Historys Hunters country: Tulare, Visalia and various other areas in the County.
The studio office staff occasionally took lunch with Walt down the at the Tam O' Shanter restaurant where Walts table (and some Disney items of interest) still is available to dine at and see.
BTW: Walt's cocktail was a Scotch Mist with Buchanan's Black n White.

First one to the right when you walked into the building using the front doors. Was SO great! I went to Cal-Arts to get there. Best Animation program in the world. At Cal-Arts. The Disney family was/is involved in that program too. I was born in St. Louis, Missouri. So I knew growing up in the Midwest about Walt and Roy living in Marceline, Missouri. What an awesome look at Walt Disney humble beginnings. I loved that a lot of the buildings are still standing but sad that they bulldozed the original studio to build a store. This was back when Disney stood for something instead of the greedy monster it has become. I wonder what Walt would say if he could see what they have done to the vision he had in his mind of a place families could step into the world of their childhood cartoons.. The reason Walt moved the facilities to Burbank when he did (as opposed to earlier or later) was due to the success of "Fantasia." The profits from "Fantasia" enabled Walt to build that Burbank studio.
Also, John Marshall High in the background was used for filming the exterior scenes in "Grease" in 1977. The reason for this was that "Grease" wasn't set in Los Angeles, California, and Marshall High was a school that DIDN'T have palm trees surrounding it (at least when filming of "Grease" took place).

Jeff, Great history lesson and video. Wow the work you do is awesome. I own a company that distributes rubber products for one of the 33 original investors in Disneyland. Walt wanted to thank the original investors, companies that helped in the beginning. So, Walt created club 33 a first class restaurant they could go to and enjoy the park. I've been to club 33 three times and it is really nice. There is a 6 month to 12 month waiting list. Only people that are connected to the original investors can go. It's a really special place inside. Walt died before it was open. I was told by one of the waiters that if you turn 33 on it's side it's Mouse ears. Plus the Disneyland address is 1313 North Harbor Blvd. and if you turn 1313 on it's side it's also Mouse ears. One time when I went the night before I was there I was sitting where Robin Williams sat. It's located above the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. How it works is you don't pay to get into the park you just pay for your meal at club 33. It's an amazing deal and meal is awesome.

    So interesting about Disney.
He worked out of the studios in Laurel Canyon Lookout Mountain. I believe Jared Leto bought the facility a couple years ago.

Walt used to have a chalet in Squaw Valley , CA. I can remember as a kid seeing it in the 60's. It was painted pink and stood out. The placement of the windows and trim formed a face. it was really cute.
