Hi Shane, that looks really good, I always say you learn more when things go wrong(gasket) and it sounds like youre having loads of fun, well done, Barry PS thanks for the Oring spreadsheet.
Oh yeah, LOADS of fun. I had another motive when videoing the inside of the axle casting and the pipe. It goes back to a comment you left on a video about making sure the lube pipe is in place for going back to the cover. Is that what the inside of yours looks like? Do you have that "block" that the lube pipe goes in? Just curious...
@@path.of.discovery Hi Shane to be honest with you I'm not 100% sure what it looks like as I didn't realise the pipe went there untill I have the cylinder back in and began putting the pipe work back, the pipe work in the old axle was missing and the replacement axle that part of the pipe work came in a bag, so it was a case of figure it out, and I could see a hole and remembered the holes in the gasket. I've still got the old casting at the farm I'll have a look inside next time I'm up there and get a couple of images to share with you. so lets crack on! see you got it in the video briliant we'll have to come up with something else as well. have fun Barry
I just made one in Excel based on what I'd found on the diagrams. Here's the link to the sheet: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11RU7l4u7Zc2HnYeLmQ5VeWYz6SLjhxcX/edit?usp=drive_link Your mileage may vary :-) I have notes on some of the entries on what worked and what I used as an alternative. I ordered mainly from the O-ring store out in the western US. I've got a bunch more stuff out there on my google drive. Here's the general link to all of it: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1NLManoOJ6WzuS3RWVQsnXfosWUDUncuP?usp=sharing
One of my many sayings is everything happens for a reason as you found out with the new gasket but I'm sure you had fun making a new correct one. I dunno how you make your bolt holes but I brought myself a set from ebay gasket hole punch set absolutely fantastic and not very dear. Nice to see your channel is steadily growing throughly enjoy your videos and when in a rush mistakes get made not that you'd know that lol 😆
You got that right! Everything happens for a reason! I just hammer the holes out w/ the round part of a ball-peen hammer like Barry showed in a video somewhere. Hit it square and it punches out just fine. I have a couple of smaller hammers 2oz and 4oz that really help with the smaller holes.
Got the seal kit from Barcley Williams. Next day delivery. Had the conundrum of which way round the seal and wiper wen't. I assumed that the seal wen't at the pressure side. I see you did the same as I did. Took the 3 way valve apart. Quite simple inside, basically a spool valve.M 😀
Thanks Lance! I'm happy that it's about to start coming back together. Feel like I've crossed the halfway point of this hydraulics revamp. I've learned a ton through this process. I've been slowly making my way through all your MF restoration videos. I'm learning SOOOOOOOOOOOO much from you.
@@path.of.discovery I was just reading an old service bulletin I forgot I had and if the hydraulic cylinder was marked you could bore it out 0.020" and they supplied an oversized piston to suit but still used the same piston sealing rings.
@@BundyBearsShed I'd read that in the service manual too about boring it out 20 thou. The bore wasn't too scratched up, and honing it smoothed most of it out. If it doesn't hold better I'll likely revisit and may think about getting it bored.
@@BundyBearsShed I also just emailed you on your channel email address about a potential future project. Would like to know if you've got any information on a service manual for that.
Well, that explains why those holes were there! I didn't have the dowels on mine (that I can remember). Thanks for the info on that! Thanks for watching and commenting!
My yellow gasket for this job arrived today so I'm fitting mine tomorrow. My 885 did not have dowels either and the parts catalogue doesn't show them. My thinking was... other than the 4 bolt holes in the gasket, there are 3 others. The bigger one at the 3 o'clock position is for the lube pipe, it oils the donkey's connecting rod and lift lock. I believe on mine those 2 other little holes are the pathway for the lube oil to leave and therfore to circulate. Thank you for your videos, by watching you, my only extra step tomorrow will be to use those 2 top long bolts as a guide, put in backwards to make sure the gasket sealer stays in place and those 2 little holes don't get blocked at all. Thanks again for the videos!
I took the ram piston out. A few marks on it, got it polished up and checked for roundness within 0.0007". Do you have a part No for the big O'ring and backing seal. 80mm x 5mm measuring the grove in the ram piston. M
Good! I got the o-ring and composite backer from David Brown Parts LTD. www.davidbrownparts.com/Hydraulic%20System.html Scroll down about three quarters of the way in the "Seals, seal kits & gaskets" section to see them. Part number 623519K. £27.50 It's not listed on their ebay site, so will likely have to call if you order from them.
@@path.of.discovery Spoke to them, the bloke who answered the phone did give me that part No but none in stock. Have a local barring place in Aberdeen I might give them a try as they keep imperial o'rings. My brother has 3 d printers and could make the backing in nylon if push came to shove. There is one for sale on USA ebay around $500 + postage lol M😀
@@MarshallSmart Oh no! Could try Barkley Williams www.barcleywilliams.co.uk/ or John Conaty www.johnconaty.com/David-Brown-Hydraulics-s/2167.htm You could also call a local CaseIH dealer and see if they have any.
I think that stripping out hydraulic piston will be my next job if manage to remanufacturing the hydraulic pump. We have a saying "more speed less haste". M😀
Honing and smoothing mine out I think is really going to help with the issues I was having with failure to hold. I've been following along on your instagram and vids. Keep at it, I'm really interested to see if it works like new.

The 2 small holes are for dowel pins -- may not be on all the models, but they are there at least on most I have worked on
