My wife and I just purchased a David Brown 990 tractor as our first and only tractor on our farm and I must just say thank you so much for your videos. I have never worked on any sort of vehicle before outside of changing tires and your videos are so helpful. I'm changing all of the filters and oils and I'd be pretty lost without you. I’m sure you’re sick of hearing this but man I can’t thank you enough for making these videos. I feel I have an actual shot at restoring my grandfathers 885 because of you.
Hi Steve flemish. This was one of your most simple straight forward video. When I first saw the title of your video I paused and have a bath so that I will have time to listen attentively to you. The title said gearbox and hydraulics. I am disappointed that you did not open the gearbox. I thought there will be a necessity for you to dismantle and explain the gearbox. I understand well when things and said by you Mbs moshitoa (south Africa
Great videos. Am doing my 885, according to the parts catalogue there should be a magnet inside the spring in the screen attached with a BA2 nyloc nut, yours seems to be missing.
I have a lot of David Browns. I always remove a gear shift lever to fill directly from a 20 litre pail. I empty the transmission with a hose plugged into an external coupler. This just leaves a few litres to drain underneath.
My 880 David brown has the mesh filter ,where can I buy a new one cause mine has detereated.all i see online is the one your showing but my cover will not go over it.
I am not very familiar with these tractors but I was under the impression that the transmission oil serviced all the hydraulics and the axles. You only drained the oil in the transmission. Does that leave residual dirty oil in the axles and loader hydraulic lines which will contaminate your clean oil? Are you sure you don’t have to drain pto , axles and all locations not just the filter sump?
Yes you are right, it servers all those...there will be some residual oil indeed that is why I make sure the pistons are down... I should have stated that . I will do a check on what you stated, and you might be right.
Mr. Steve, I have a question. My father has a David Brown 990 but the PTO keeps slipping out of gear when engaged. The PTO works and spins the brushcutter however it quickly slips out of gear after a while and disengages. Do you have any suggestions on how we can fix it? In addition can you go over the operation and schematic of the PTO on the David Brown 990 in a future video?
This can happen with most any tractor. When I am bushogging with my DB 990, I pull the PTO lever forward to engage it, then I hook one end of a strong bungee cord to the lever, and hook the other end on whatever other part of the tractor that will keep a firm tension on the lever. Works perfectly. Just remember to remove the bungee cord and disengage the lever before shutting off the tractor so the momentum of the bushog blades don't continue to turn the PTO gears when the motor is no longer supplying power to the PTO.
Very nice videos. Fine with oil change at engine and hyd, filter change too, but renember the final drives at the DB's-they are under a hard load and often running in old worn oil with condence water in it.
Hi Steve, thank you for your videos! I recently bought a 990 selectamatic and the lift doesn't work. I'm going to try to change all the hydraulic fluid and filters. Greetings from Uruguay.
Hi Steve, I've a 1394, which is similar to your tractor. A lot of people use super universal oil in the engine and hydraulics. Seems strange not to use hydraulic oil when you could be mixing implements with modern tractors. I think that the rear lift needs to be up or down to empty the cylinder, so you might have some litres there... Thanks, need to do mine now.
I HAVE AN 885 WITH HYDRAULIC ISSUES. MY LOADER LIFT IS SLOW AND NEEDS THROTTLE TO LIFT AND WHEN IT IS HOT IT WON'T LIFT. COULD IT BE THE FILTER, I HAVE NEVER CHANGED IT IN 3 YEARS. I HAVE SWITCHED THE LINES ON THE CONTROL VALVE BUT NO CHANGE.
you could use a piece of hydraulic tube to attatch to your rear external hydraulic line to empty most of the hydraulic oil before you unscrew the plug in the bottom, that way it's less of a mess. (je kan eens tuk olieleiding in de achterste pries de force steken en het merendeel van de oil zo aflaten voordat je de stop losdraaid, dat werkt properder)
@@D3Sshooter I don't mean to be a pest, but what attachment ? I have a similar tractor, is that a factory installation ? Also are most of the implements 3 point attached, Are there trailer type equipment that hook to a draw bar, and depth is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder raising and lowering the tires? I really enjoy watching you work on your projects. Thanks
I heard you explaining 15w40. Is so strange that the hotter the engine becomes the thicker the oil becomes. Wouldn't it be difficult for it to reach parts in time and lubricate them. Or did you do tangue mistake Mbs moshitoa south africa
When referencing motor oil weight, you are actually referring to the viscosity grade or the tendency of a liquid to flow slowly or quickly. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) developed a grading system to designate the viscosity level of single grade and multigrade motor oils. In single grade oils, the lower the number, the better it flows at cold temperatures. Likewise, the higher the number, the thicker the oil. In regard to multigrade oils, the first number in the code, such as 10W in SAE 10W-30, means that the oil can still be pumped by the engine at a temperature as low as a single grade 10W oil.
Just doing this on my Case 1290. I discovered that someone has left out the strainer and valve assembly so I had to find a new one. I have put it all back together but I cannot find the fill point. It is not the same as this one. Any suggestions?
i have a david brown 880, i live in america. the local Case Dealership said i can use a fluid called Hydratrans oil. i am worried it may be only for new tractors. what do you recommend i should use for my hydraulic and gearbox oil?
Well I use general all round TracOil as they call it. It goes in the hydraulic system and engine... I think that Hydratrans will be OK the hydraulci part

I hate to impose but you are pretty much a mechanical guru...do you have any idea what is now going on, is it the clutch or what do you think...thanks in advance
Thanks for the comments, that is very strange.. does the engine rev up and the tractor picks up speed slowly ? if so that could be a clutch problem. But that would not explain why it would be affected by the oil change. What does it do in neutral ? does it rev ok ? does the lift works properly on idle ? Are you sure you don't have the manual brake on ?

No I’m gonna sound like a real clown... but I have no knowledge of a manual brake 😊 where would I find that? I pulled the lever up without any load, and the arms worked and went up but when you put weight they don't. Notice that when i am revving the arms move better but again can't lift weight. What do you think it is the problem?
Well they should lift with weight , have a look on the video that explains the entire hydraulics system... I am sure that you will be able to diagnose your issue after watching it as it could be so many things. Most likely mis adjusted or possible a pump issue ... measure the pressure of the pump if in doubt.
