I just fixed by pool with the use of this video. I had a bad back wash piston. I had replaced and lubed the valve o-rings. That was not working so I just took the piston out and did a bypass all together. That worked. Becase of your great instructions I tried it and saved some cash. Thank big time. Your my hero.
Just FYI you are able to use a push/pull backwash valve. Plumbing from pump goes to port B and return to pool goes to Port E, waste is port A. Backwash needs to be in the up position when pool is circulating and down when backwashing. Great videos.
Great Teaching video. All your videos are very clear compared to many other demonstrations and narrations. Good Job. Answered my questions about 1) elimination of backwash valve 2) reverse of the inlet and outlet connections! Thank you.
Thank you David and this video really helped me installing the Quad BUT…. The Superior 37115 PVC Pipe Cutter did not do too well. I used this tool and it was great for about 5 cuts. Then it shattered every pipe. I expected this to happen on old pipe but not on new pipe. I am really disappointed. Too late to return. But David thank you for your time and your professionalism. I get your emails and they really help especially the last one where you said chlorine level is tied to the level of cyanuric acid. If you don’t get David’s emails I would suggest you start. God Bless you David.
I just got a home with a pool and this is all new to me. My pool is a 17k gallon pool and welp...its empty with 3 foot of dirty water and someone stole the pump and the filter is a skinny looking oddball that really looks too small for the pool. I just bought a Pentair Quad DE filter and now...trying to figure what pump to get. Im on my own here...and with your help...I feel confident. I will look at your videos for more knowledge. Thank you for your contributions!
Thank you for the great feedback. That is a pretty tough situation for sure. The Super Flo VS pump by Pentair would be a good choice for you. It is an affordable Variable speed Pump and will work fine on your size pool.
@@SPL Thanks for the response! So I was looking around town and found this pump brand new for $550...you think this will work? I forgot to add that I have a hot tub built in the corner of the pool. Hi David, pool builder didn’t install a backwash valve - but did install a ball valve after the quad de filter outlet for direct waste to sewer catch. Can I open this ball valve when needing to waste some water? The pentair manual says only approved backwash filters can be used but what I have isn’t a backwash function- it’s just a typical ball valve that will allow water to leave the filter and go to the sewer. Pool builder said this is how city wanted it too. (And agrees like you, that backwash for quad de isn’t needed). Does this sound ok?
My FNS filter is 15 yrs old. I live in Florida. We had the inside manifold taken out and cleaned and outside clamp replaced last year. yesterday I noticed the filter (shell) itself squirted water (crack) The whole thing needs replacement. I ordered the FNS Plus 48 filter... What would cause this seeing it's made out of fiberglass? How long should it take for experience pool supplier to install? Thank you for your videos. Very helpful
The Fiberglass cracks from exposure to the Sun. I would say 15 years is a great lifespan for a filter. If you are replacing an FNS plus 48 with another FNs plus 48 it is only having to unscrew the unions and putting the new filter where the old one was. About 20 minutes.
No it doesn't. They do sell one. For me it is easier to just take the filter apart and hose it off. Takes less than 10 minutes to clean the entire filter. Backwashing these doesn't seem as effective.
@@SPL thank you for the reply. Do you think this filter would be sufficient for a 25,000 gallon pool withba penair superflo 1.5 hp variable speed pump. My pool filter now keeps dumping de in the poil everytime the pump powers on.
I had to replace my pool pump, redid the piping and now I have a leak from my pentair pool filter where the bulkhead union is. I checked everything, use thread tape (I don't see a spot for an o-ring gasket) but I can't figure out why. Any suggestion on troubleshooting?
It might have a slight crack, Sometimes if you tighten them with Channel locks carefully you can stop it. Carefully as not to over tighten and crack them.
your fast on install... hey i want to install a new filter system on my 15 K gallon in ground pool . what size filter system do i need ??? 48'' 36'' 24'' / i have a 24'' pentair now. are Hayward and pentair the same thing basically ??? i use diatomaceous earth...
With a Quad DE filter this is the only valve you can use. The regular Multi-Port Valve will damage the Cartridges. But you can call Pentair just to verify. That is what I was told by my local Pentair Rep.
How do I determine which size filter assembly to buy? Tank and all, like in this video. I currently have an FNS 72, but the pool used to run off a FNS 60... But the quads I'm seeing are 420's. I'm a bit confused. I have a 14,000 gallon inground 'play pool'... Shallow at each end, 5 foot in the middle... Kidney shaped.
So the Quad DE comes in 3 sizes: 60 sq ft, 80 sq ft and 100 sq ft. You are probably looking at Cartridge Filters also without realizing it. They make 3 Cartridge filter sizes with the same tank that the Quad DE Filter uses. They are known as Clean & Clear Plus Filters. They come in these 3 sizes: 320 sq ft, a 420 sq ft and a 520 sq ft. - So if you are just looking to replace it with another DE filter I suggest a 60 sq ft Quad DE filter. If you just want to change it out for a completely different filter type then the 320 sq ft Cartridge filter will be fine. The DE and Cartridge Filter sizing is totally different so maybe that is why you are a bit confused. Bottom line: a 60 sq ft Quad DE Filter or a 320 sq ft Clean & Clear Plus Cartridge filter will work fine with your pool size.
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 You're exactly right! Which do you prefer, DE or Cartridge? So was this install DE or cartridge... With no backwash valve installed?
I prefer Cartridge. Easier to clean overall and for your size pool very effective. Unless you live in an area with a lot of dirt/dust like the high desert. Then I would go with DE. But Cartridge is better.
Hi. I have just come accross a strange setup. Is there a place I can send you a picture? It’s basically a pull and push valve connected to the quad DE. The line from the pump connecting to the bottom and the seperator line connected on the top of the valve assembly. Can you explain this or is it a mistake?
Did you install a valve to bypass the filter for the ability to vacuum to waste? If so, what kind/model valve would you recommend? Just had my old DE filter replaced with this exact same quad de filter but they didn't put any valve to bypass the filter and I'd like to add one. Thanks.
If you want a Backwash valve with "Waste" mode for the Quad DE this is the only one that will work: 2" Threaded Multiport Valve for Sand and Quad D.E - 261055
derekisthematrix if you just want to be able to vac to waste, a simple 3 way valve between the pump and filter with a backwash hose will do the trick. Compool makes a great 3 way valve that lasts.

You can't technically vacuum to waste but you can install a 3-way valve before the filter to do that.
