I just came here to write the fact that Sargeist’s “Let The Devil In” is a mesmerizingly melodic album that should undoubtedly be on anyone’s wishlist! Stay safe and have a good day!
It was a pleasant surprise that the song was not just thrown together, tbh I didn't expect such quality but I was truly impressed. Great job and greetings from Finland!
I acutally think it is not only in Black Metal where the finnish stuff is just this little bit more melodic and very recognizable over metal from other countries. Because no matter if you look at really hardcore Black Metal or on the other hand at bands like Amorphis, Brymir, Kalmah, Wintersun, Wolfheart, Insomnium, Shade Empire, Swallow the Sun etc. You can pretty much ALWAYS here from the very first melody being played that these bands are from Finnland. Actually i pretty much enjoy everything from those people no matter what subgenre of metal it is from, it just has this finnish vibe that really does it for me.
@@necrom4454 I didn't either, but wow. It could get ridiculous. A whole lot of them have connections to Goatmoon or Satanic Warmaster. I hope it gets better, I don't wanna avoid Finland. They do have a pretty language.
LOL!!! I LOVED that long pause before you mentioned Behexen given the (justified) belief of their fans that they have been overlooked for so long. I could see so many fans just sit there on the edge of their seats, "AND!? AND!? AND!? BEHEXEN!? BEHEXEN!? BEHEXEN!?"
When you hear music in ANY genre made in Finland you can tell it was made in Finland almost right away. Grossly generalizing- it is weirder. Much weirder.

Turns out I already knew how to play Finnish black metal, because whenever I try to make a black metal song, it sounds similar to this, so thank you for helping me realize that. It's weird, because I listen to more of the Norwegian stuff, but somehow I tend to play more like you've demonstrated here. Alright. Nice job mate. Riffing-wise, Finland is one of the very best black metal countries in the world. No more words, just names. Horna, Behexen, Sargeist, Satanic Warmaster (which I think have influenced your style), Goatmoon... All great. The song might be one of your most intriguing tunes (like that melodic black metal song you composed) and bears some strong similarities to my composing style (I might live in Greece, but I play in the finnish style, though my riffs are more of the melodic/depressing variety ala Satanic Warmaster). Keep going! 🖤
Interesting. At the first 3 minutes or sl you talked about the differences in the finnish riffs comared to others and I must say, my own riffs always sound more like that. Even though I've never listened to any of those bands you mentioned.. maybe there's something in our blood that makes us do black metal in a certain way... perkele.
This video was greatI would've loved a mention to Beherit or Moonsorrow, even though they are more Viking Metal. I hope you do an Immortal tutorial that would be hilarious.
"Single note stuff" and "Behexen rocky riff" sound like "Evil single note" and "Little thrasher" from your "Every type of black metal guitar riff" video.
A decent chunk of my collection is Finnish records. Finland uses 'punk' rhythms way more than a lot of other scenes which is what drew me to Beherit when I was a teenager. Definitely cold melodys and not in a Scandinavian way. ( Although early Horna and the like just straight up Gorgoroth/Emperor. ) a lot of stuff you could say is just black metal as a genre. I recommend listening to Diaboli- Mesmerized by Darkness, earnest, rough, cold and simple. Hails to my Finnish friends and bands we couldn't play with this year!
Finland is the most metal country on Earth, most metal bands per capita. Some of the all time greats are are from there, Children Of Bodom, Amorphis, and Moonsorrow. Also, nice save: 'the holy trinity...er, unholy trinity'. 😅
I had a one man band too, same like you, Black Metal and stuff. I have it on bandcamp. Needed to use Hydrogen for drums. I taught myself to do everything. But you play very good, congratulations. I'm already listening to your band project in Spotify and it is very good!
Great content! Serious question here: how do you approach the producing of a black metal track? It's really hard to find information on how to make a song sound raw but still defined and in a way, 'good'. I tried to find out on UA-cam but you only get comedy oriented 'how to be black metal', where they just make everything sound shitty on purpose. I really struggle with this, because I get half-decent at producing death metal and I think it's easier, using a DAW and VSTs to make a song sound 'tight' than 'raw'. What's your opinion on this? Cheers from Switzerland
A lot of people, in particular those who whinge about and criticize 'bad' production. really don't seem to get the importance of production. The 'good' production at 5:40 makes the music sound much more Winterfylleth/Drudkh like whereas the 'bad' production definitely sounds more 'Finnish'. Production is as important as melody, playing style, etc.
How about an Icelandic tutorial? It would be interesting to see how your interpretation varies as, to me, what you ascribe to Finland also applies to modern Icelandic bands. I am somewhat biased, but there are also English bands doing this sort of thing, too. The latest Abduction album will probably become a landmark in defining the third/fourth wave bm.

After listening to this tutorial, one realizes how much bands like Mgla and Uada owe to the finnish bm scene for inspiring their sound...
Mgla is inspired by Finnish scene (Clandestine Blaze mostly) and Uada....is inspired by Mgla x)
...and so the cycle is complete...
Mgla first albums sounded differently though
Ye, they definitely evolved! One could kinda see it coming with them debuting on a split album with finnish bands, though.
