John Astin as Gomez was fantastic in the 60s TV show, but Raul Julia was amazing and made the role his own in the 90s movies. He definitely looked like he loved that role... He was having so much fun while on set.
Raul Julia as Gomez is one of the greatest casting in any blockbuster ever. He is genuinely perfect and everyone else like Angelica Huston, Christina Ricci and Christopher Lloyd are fantastic. The fact that this was Barry Sonnenfeld first feature film as a director is mind blowing Because it’s well directed
"But I didn't hate my mother, it was an accident" probably my favorite line. One of the main reasons the humor still works today for this movie is that it leaves a few things to the imagination. To this day I still have so many questions. Why was there a little guy in the train? What is his life? Why is there named escape hatches out the back?
That part was real funny to me when Cousin It was talking to Lurch. Of course we can't understand what Cousin It is saying but Lurch was nodding his head up and down really invested in the conversation.
The director of the film, Barry Sonnenfield, really does have a good track record with doing adaptations. Like along with the two Addams Family movies, he also have directed the original Men In Black trilogy of films and produced the show A Series of Unfortunate Events
According to the trivia the film was supposed to take place over the course of a year, beginning and ending at Christmas. However, it was decided that Halloween made more sense as a celebratory holiday for the Addams, so the script was altered to reflect that. Haven’t had this confirmed, but I have a theory the school event was supposed to be the thanksgiving pageant that ended up in the sequel. It was too good to waste. The production design really helped make the film. There’s a dark, oddly authentic aesthetic that feels like it could work in a full on horror movie, and that along with the performances and spot on casting, really helps ground the film.
Yes I love that slack-jawed wide open eyes the audience had after they've been drenched in fake blood. And how proud The Addams Family was especially Uncle Fester.
It's really gratifying to hear that the irony of the family being "weird" and being the happiest family in the neighborhood was 100% intentional. Their neighbors were "normal," but live in acrimonious dullness, always trying to get ahead and unable to work together because they don't respect each other, while the Addams' are in a passionate, joyful marriage and have children who love and respect their parents and each other, as well as extended family who fit in and are supportive. And fun fact: Ennio Morricone won a Razzie for the soundtrack to "The Thing." Yeah, as in: the guy who did the soundtrack for "The Man With No Name" movies on the soundtrack for John Carpenter's "The Thing." The Razzies are more about dogpiling on whatever it's popular to hate on at the moment than they are actually pointing out bad movies.
Not sure if this has been said before but The Addams Family is a lot like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: each new incarnation takes ideas and lore etc from the previous incarnation and revamps it slightly to fit the new mould and creates its own unique thing and both started in a black and white comic that's radically different from the version we know now
I know it's apropos of nothing, but, having watched both your channels for at least a decade or so, I'm happy that you're both still together and making content.
While I do love Christopher Lloyd as Fester, I would say that my favorite version of the character is from the 90's cartoon, which is sorta like a follow up to the movie kinda and has John Astin voicing Gomez in that one. He really loved to get hurt, loved explosions and he really loved pestering the neighbour, who also owns a factory that manufacture underwear, and saw him as his best friend, even though the neighbour hated his guts and The Addams Family in general because of their macabre home living. Fester in that version was a fun, goofy character.
A double dose of Phelous and Allison Halloween videos. I remember seeing both Addams Family movies in the theater. The cast and the sets were perfect. The villains were okay.
The top 3 things you need to make a great movie. Perfect casting, a great script & fantastic set/costume designs that draw people in. This had all 3 in spades.
I was 6 years old when this movie came out, and I bought the Fangoria magazine with The Addams Family on the cover, and when I saw Christina Ricci on the cover, I instantly discovered my first crush. Then I got older, and fell in love with her again when Buffalo '66 came out. I am so old.
Christina Ricci was about my age when this movie came out, and after the second film, I was seriously questioning my sexuality. Spoilers: I'm an asexual and it was an aesthetic crush. But she sure had me really confused.
I think Christopher Lloyd’s version of Uncle Fester might be my favorite version of the character, with Rip Taylor’s vocal performance in the 90s cartoon and Jackie Coogan’s original portrayal being tied a very close second. The 90s cartoon holds a special place in my heart for introducing me to the franchise. But the live action Barry Sonnenfeld films and the 1964 TV series remain important. And I love the Sonnenfeld films.
Double feature from Phelan and Allison! And love the Addams family cosplay/inspired outfits for this vid. And raul julia as Gomez and M. Bison? He really made those 90s films special
This is my favorite version of the Addams Family. So much so that when Wednesday started streaming I had a hard time with the differences. The character designs are fantastic, especially Thing, but I despise their Uncle Fester. And even then, it took me awhile to accept the series because it bugged me so much. It was a bit easier once I started exploring the comics a bit and realized the designs was more focused on that.
The reason the Thing FedEx sequence looks like a commercial is because it was used in an actual FedEx commercial. In fact what you see in the movie is pretty much the whole commercial.
Great movie I re-watched many times as a kid, then I re-watched for the first time in like 20 years and the humor and acting and atmosphere was amazing.
I've adored the 60s show for as long as I can remember, and it still holds up 100%, to this day. That series, to me, is perfect. And the 90s theatrical films* are equally perfect. * we don't talk about Addams Family Reunion** ** though I'd LOVE if Y'ALL would talk about Addams Family Reunion 😆
Look for the very obviously not Raul Julia and not Christopher Lloyd doubles who do the knife juggling during the Mamushka and the very obvious stunt guy who does the flip (and awkwardly stays lying on the ground) when Fester flips Gomez. I always do. That said, this is one of my favourite movies ever! I also love the sequel and I used to watch the old series with John Astin. 😊❤️😎🙌🔥👑
I believe that's due to Paramount+'s weird streaming contract with UA-cam. Funnily enough, a few of the episodes of the 1960's series are available for free on MGM's UA-cam channel.
This was how I got introduced to the franchise, as I was like born too late to grow up with the sitcom, as well as the first film I saw Raul Julia in. It wasn't in theaters sadly (VHS bought through McDonalds) but still was a childhood favorite of mine with all the characters and atmosphere making it very enjoyable to watch.
Don't worry about the snaps, Allison! They can just dub the sound in! :) You make a very pretty Morticia, and Phelan makes a very handsome Gomez! Seeing Raul Julia's performance in this movie just makes me very admiring of actors and at the same time, I have to admit, quite jealous as well. It must be awesome to be completely comfortable in your skin, and to be able to totally lose yourself in a role like that. I've never had even a second in my life of being that free. It really sucks that someone like me is still around, while someone like Raul Julia, a person who gave so much entertainment and joy to people, is taken away.
I know you're only counting the live action but the worst fester is the new animated one. This makes me want to watch the Hannah-Barbara one to see if it holds up
I think the novelization had the original ending. I was really young when I read it, but I remember being confused by it. I think fake Fester gets electrocuted or hit by lighting and when he wakes up he believes he's the real Fester and then they just adopt him at the end.
I remember seeing this show when I was a kid back in the 90s no joke. Personally I like the original black and white version with John Astin. He is such a legend as Gomez
Interestingly, the sister of the actor who played Pugsley did become an actress after all. I remember her from a long running soap opera Bold and Beautiful. She was quite popular among the young adult demographic.
While I definitely love these movies, my favorite iteration of the Addams Family is actually the 1992 cartoon sitcom from Cartoon Network. John Aston played Gomez there too. It was just a fun and wacky show with a lot of great voice acting and energy.
I guess maybe Morticia being employed as a pre-K school teacher must have been a commentary about the lack of qualified teachers. Nowadays, not only Morticia could totally be a pre-K school teacher, but the school would have called her after she traumatized all those children to replace the 4th-grade English, Science, and History teachers.
Seeing the thumbnail in my notifications, I thought Phelous had his middle fingers up and would then proceed to dump on the movie. Glad to know I was completely wrong; he was just mid-snapping. 😆👌
He’s letting his own Addam heritage bleed through. We thought he was going to tear it a new one but praises it... Then goes off to tear this year’s critical darling a new one; that’s a very Addams thing to do, right?
Gomez would probably consider the term "ball and chain" a tender endearment. If he ever heard what it actually means, he'd go off on one of his dramatic, half-shouted monologues.
Yup, growing up this was my favorite movie for a while. Big childhood crush on Wednesday back then so perfect timing 🤭 Plus a friend of mine kinda looked like Pugsly and that was his actual nickname! Ahhh those good old times 🤟😝
Is the Addams Family still... a thing? Rimshot. Crickets chirping (maybe on the hearth, maybe not), someone in the audience clears his throat, Wabuu: "your puns are soooooooooooooooo stuuuuuuuuuuuuuuupid." everyone: "booh! You suck! We want Phelous and Allison!" Hans Moleman: "boo-urns!"
That was a fed ex commercial. As in they used that footage for a fed ex commercial. With just added narration and graphics. I believe the slogan then was "Federal Express when absolutely, positively has to be there on time"
I mean I'm torn on that original ending. On the one hand, the message of the original ending is better (that being a family is not about blood or whatever but about being with people that's make you happy). On the other end, the real Fester being gone is kind of a downer. I see what they were going for, though and am glad we don't have to talk about the sad implications of "they never found Fester for real" for 30 years.
Love this and even the second movie. Grew up watching reruns of the old show so I was already a fan. Another example of a rare phenomenon where the stars, planets or what have you aligned and everything just worked. Story, script, directing, cast- chefs kiss. Not saying its perfect-though I think its darn close-, but I dont think we could had gotten any better of an adaptation. You can tell they had fun overall with this it shows. Funny story, I work with people with ID and other issues. This one lady HATES the song from the show when ever it comes on the TV. I cant understand why. We just went to a dance the other day and the DJ played it. I was like "Oh-oh" But she was out there grooving along with everyone else and in to it! So hilarious!
I don't remember The Adams Family without Mamushka. Our localization was build over a version with the song in it, so I never even knew that songless version exist.
Did you notice the font for the Adams Family opening credits is the same as the first Men in Black? Same director. I wonder if they were trying to recall Adams Family...or they were set in the same universe (?)
Gosh this is a movie i remember enjoying (even if I was a tad confused 😂) and introduced me to Raul Julia😊 is there a way to watch the early show stuff?🤔
Raul Julia will forever be Best Gomez. I can't imagine anyone ever topping him in the role.
I still like the OG 60's version more, but Raul is an insanely close second. I am more fond of his M. Bison, of course. RIP Raul Julia.
John Astin as Gomez was fantastic in the 60s TV show, but Raul Julia was amazing and made the role his own in the 90s movies. He definitely looked like he loved that role... He was having so much fun while on set.
Oh definitely.
Yep
"OF COURSE!!!!"
The 1991 Addams Family will never go out of style, just like Morticia's wardrobe!
Gomez: "They say that a man who represents himself in court has a fool for a client. And with God as my witness, I am that fool!"
The Little Guy was played by the director, Barry Sonnenfeld =)
The guy on the train scene is one of my favorite random movie moments of all time.
It is literally impossible to talk enough about how awesome Raul Julia was. RIP.
That part was real funny to me when Cousin It was talking to Lurch. Of course we can't understand what Cousin It is saying but Lurch was nodding his head up and down really invested in the conversation.
The director of the film, Barry Sonnenfield, really does have a good track record with doing adaptations.

He's had an up and down career.
@@scottylewis8124we don’t talk about the Kevin Spacey cat movie round these here parts[unless Allison and Phelan review it one day]
According to the trivia the film was supposed to take place over the course of a year, beginning and ending at Christmas. "COMEDY"
Well played, Phelous. Well played.
I had to pause that portion because I was laughing too loud to hear the commentary.
They really went out of their way to find the perfect actors for each role. Every single one of these performances is iconic.
You guys are the champion of couple costumes because of regardless of how much you look like your costumes, we can feel the chemistry between you two.
I second this, you two are a YT weirdo power couple on the level of Gomez and Morticia, 'weirdo' said with love and respect.
It's the love dovey eyes between the two.
Yes I love that slack-jawed wide open eyes the audience had after they've been drenched in fake blood. And how proud The Addams Family was especially Uncle Fester.
The entire cast was awesome, but Raul Julia just takes the cake. And I'll never forget him as M. Bison.
It's really gratifying to hear that the irony of the family being "weird" and being the happiest family in the neighborhood was 100% intentional. I know it's apropos of nothing, but, having watched both your channels for at least a decade or so, I'm happy that you're both still together and making content.
This was just the most perfect live action cast. No others can compare
Rest in Power Raul Julia. But it's not old business.
While I do love Christopher Lloyd as Fester, I would say that my favorite version of the character is from the 90's cartoon, which is sorta like a follow up to the movie kinda and has John Astin voicing Gomez in that one.

Anjelica Huston as Morticia is still one of my biggest crushes, also she's very much the inspiration for Lady Dimitrescu.
Truly my favorite TV family. They clearly love each other and support one another.
Such a great Movie, still holds up today.
The Adams family truly one of my favorite fictional families.
The Addams Family movies of the 90’s were my favorite. I still love them. ❤
Jimmy Workman, who played Pugsley, is the older brother of Ariel Winter from Modern Family.
I was 6 years old when this movie came out, and I bought the Fangoria magazine with The Addams Family on the cover, and when I saw Christina Ricci on the cover, I instantly discovered my first crush.

Always does

in fairness, Carol Kane did have some good preparation for her role in the Princess Bride
I love you two together ❤️
Something similar happened with Silent Hill 2. Guy Cihi was accompanying his daughter at her audition, but he ended up getting cast as the lead.
perfect for Halloween
I remember seeing this show when I was a kid back in the 90s no joke. Personally I like the original black and white version with John Astin. He is such a legend as Gomez
The Addams Family and Addams Family Values are basically my standard for any Addams Family media after it. The cast was so ridiculously spot on.
Interestingly, the sister of the actor who played Pugsley did become an actress after all. I remember her from a long running soap opera Bold and Beautiful. She was quite popular among the young adult demographic.
Amazing video and I love the Addams family movies and I love the new Addams family tv shows too.
Love the costumes! Happy Halloween, you two!
10:07 Hence why the family dynamic in Wednesday always bothered me.
While I definitely love these movies, my favorite iteration of the Addams Family is actually the 1992 cartoon sitcom from Cartoon Network. John Aston played Gomez there too. It was just a fun and wacky show with a lot of great voice acting and energy.
Man, I loved that show. I remember how Fester considered the neighbor a good friend but the guy absolutely despised him.
I loved this you made my day

Any holiday celebrated with the Addams Family movies is a Festervus for the restervus.
9:25 Woof. Wicked burn.
Great review!
Raul Julia was born to play Gomez.
When ya think about The Thing, he’s probably got very tough calluses on every finger tip and other areas that helped him travel/survive ✋
Thank you for the Zoolander reference 😂
Loved this film so much! You both look amazing🖤💜🧡 Happy Halloween 2023🎃👻🪦
You know I remember playing the classic Addams family video game on the sega genesis back in the early 90s was pretty fun you get to play at Gomez
Gomez would probably consider the term "ball and chain" a tender endearment. If he ever heard what it actually means, he'd go off on one of his dramatic, half-shouted monologues.

I like the part when Gomez was like what and miss Gilligan.
That was a fed ex commercial. As in they used that footage for a fed ex commercial. With just added narration and graphics. I believe the slogan then was "Federal Express when absolutely, positively has to be there on time"
I had just watched this movie for the first time in college yesterday, what a coincidence.
I mean I'm torn on that original ending. On the one hand, the message of the original ending is better (that being a family is not about blood or whatever but about being with people that's make you happy).

The best line for the movies when gomez says you are mister debbie
Shannel Workman (Jimmy Workman's Sister) would go on to voice Larxene in the Kingdom Hearts games.

Rest In Peace Raul Julía him as Gomez Addams it truly was a performance that was specifically made for him only in my opinion.
My goodness, you two are looking sharp!
The actor who played Pugsley is the face of the “Milady!” meme.
I would be scared stiff of getting a detached retina if I was Mortica
I don't remember The Adams Family without Mamushka. Our localization was build over a version with the song in it, so I never even knew that songless version exist.
hurricane blasts accountant and mummy into graves *TEAM ROCKET BLASTING OFF AGAIN!*
Wooo 🥳 love the cosplay guys🥹😍
Best Halloween movie to watch for the season for me.
“I enjoyed that.”
Good one Marry-Kate.
I love these movies so much, and I actually am mostly fond of the New Addams Family show.
Every video you made makes my day if I'm having a bad day I just watch you and you make me happy
Did you notice the font for the Adams Family opening credits is the same as the first Men in Black?
Same director. I wonder if they were trying to recall Adams Family...or they were set in the same universe (?)
After all these years, it never occurred to me even once that the Thing parcel delivery sequence was product placement. Mind=blown. I'm an eijit.
Gosh this is a movie i remember enjoying (even if I was a tad confused 😂) and introduced me to Raul Julia😊 is there a way to watch the early show stuff?🤔
MGM has some episodes on their UA-cam channel. It’s also on the Roku Channel.
