Back in college, a friend of mine bought some of the actual Bison Dollars prop money for another friend's birthday. They were about ten dollars each, which translated to about five British pounds. Utterly brilliant. :-D
This movie made me seek out other Raul Julia roles, because he was just so infinitely fun to watch no matter how good or bad the movie he was in. Great talent gone far too soon, glad to see him appreciated all the more as time passes.
Oh bless you, somebody else who remembers that absolute turd of a tv movie. He is the one element that makes that movie worth watching, even in garbage like Overdrawn Raul was a pro
The short story of that title is vastly better than the only vaguely similar movie. The story doesn’t have any Casablanca connections, but because Casablanca is public domain or at least they were able to get permission to use it for free, the filmmakers could use swathes of it…
When I was a teenager I hated this movie, but now I've mellowed out a lot on it and appreciate this movie on it's own terms for what it is: A nice bit of 90s cheese filtered through a Street Fighter lens. I was always way more into Street Fighter than any other fighting game series so the animated movie was my jam (I even still have the imported Japanese laserdisc copy of it I bought in 1995). The American cartoon, not so much. I actually hope Phelan reviews that sometime. And yes, Raul Julia went way harder in this movie than he needed to and I love him for it.
It's one of those movies that can only be appreciated by kids and adults, because teenagers are less easily entertained as children but also more likely to take everything at face value and will rarely appreciate unintentional humor.
While it's not a great movie by any stretch. It's not nearly as bad as it gets maligned as. And I think that's a lot of it. it's a cheesy 90's action movie that people remember from being teens, and let that color how they feel about it.
The Street Fighter animated series also tried to pass off Guile as the sole main hero and the rest of the World Warriors as his backup team/sidekicks for his fight against Bison. If you're really that intent on making the American the lead, make it Ken as the "main character" and Ryu as his friendly rival.
The thing with Guile though, he be the guy with the most motivation and reason to go after Bison. With Ryu and Ken they were mostly just guys who wanted to fight.
This movie is littered with so much wonderfully cheesy, tongue-in-cheek dialogue. The movie’s writer/director Steven E DeSouza also wrote stuff like Die Hard, Predator, and The Running Man, and his style is just all over this.
His very first directorial movie was one around stoners trying to establish their business. Let that sink in =p It was a very rare movie only screened at festivals, thought to be lost until recently, called Arnold Wrecking co.
I wish G.I. Joe movies tried to embrace the goofier aspects of the series since some of the plans were kinda out there in how much mad science was involved, but they also need to not be afraid to make Cobra a serious threat cause they made Cobra seem REALLY undermanned compared to the show or comic.
The guy playing Sawada is a Japanese actor, Sawada Kenya, who has done some Hong Kong movies, you can see him fight Jackie Chan in the movie Thunderbolt. The film also features kickboxing legend Benny "The Jet" Urquidez who was the films martial arts trainer and was also involved in the stunt work.
Just tragic Raul Julia knew he was dying so he did this for his kids. His performance makes the film memorable more than it would have been otherwise. And considering this movie involves a group of colorful characters some of which part of an army force trying to take over an oppressive dictator, one could argue this film was more of a G.I. Joe film than the live-action G.I. Joe films.
My absolute favorite bit of trivia concerning this is that the actors also had to do the motion capture for the video game but the actor for T. Hawk packed up and left without telling anyone which is why he’s not in it. Also, having lived in Hawaii for a while, there is a bit of a history with Sumo over there. Not sure the filmmakers INTENDED for that casting to make retroactive sense but they did.
4:48- Allison's Jean Claude impression also has a bit of Tommy Wiesau in there. At least Chun-Li actress Ming-Na Wen went on to play the voice of Disney's Mulan, Agent May in Agents of SHIELD, and Fennec Shand in the Star Wars shows The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch, and The Book of Boba Fett.

Our local cult movie club had a showing of it late 2019, that’s probably the second time I saw it in full and it was actually a lot of fun. They even got the guy who played Zangief record an introduction for the movie. An SF2 game contest where you could win coupons to buy drinks and I made second place, wile playing Honda. I hate every scene where Raul Julia isn't on screen. But I love it when he is. It's like two different films: a generic boring actionsploitation film with Van Damme sleepwalking and hating his life, and where great actors like , and one where Raul Julia (and to a lesser extent Wes Studi ) is devouring scenery and being as goofy as possible and loving being a villain. While Roshan Seth and Ming Na Wen are genuinely giving good performances, and Peter Tuiasosopo, Andrew Bryniarski , and Grand L Bush are pretty funny, the film just feels like a meandering drag most of the time. It's a film I struggle with, a real love/hate relationship
I'm on that same boat. If anything, didn't care much for the film as a kid and now that hasn't changed, but I really do particularly like the effort from both Raul and Ming-Na as standouts. Otherwise, it's a pretty standard film that turns Street Fighter into discount G.I. Joe. Not gonna pretend I don't see why others get more out of it, but still, I don't think highly of this one, especially in the face of the animated film, and even MK from around that time.
Fun fact...boxing gloves cushion your knuckles, NOT your blows. Fist protection let's people punch MUCH harder, and the introduction of the boxing glove actually increased fatalities in the sport.
The dynamic with the two main stars here reminds me a lot of Masters of the Universe. The actor cast as the main villain acting circles around the super action hero, while delivering an incredibly fun Shakespearean interpretation of their character.
From what I heard, the SF movie was rewritten from a GI Joe live action script treatment, and this is how Guile ended up in the lead role (originally Duke).
This movie really took a deep dive into Street Fighter lore. How often do people remember Street Fighter was integrated into GI Joe just the year prior to this movie's release? With that in mind the movie makes perfect sense.
It is interesting that they got everyone from the game, except Fei Long and Akuma (who was actually in the arcade game), also Phelous now needs to review all the SF cartoon series
Yeah I know the movie is not great, but hey the fact that Raul Juila played Bison because his kids wanted him to AND that this was his last movie, I have to give the man credit and at least the movie is 90s chesse which is at most funny........glares angrily at the Chun Li 'movie'.
*The Legend of Chun-Li* would make a lot more sense if you just changed it to a *King of Fighters* movie and called the main villain *Geese Howard* who he genuinely resembles.
This is my all-time favorite movie, I unapologetically love everything about it. Sure, it shares little in common with the games, but Ken and Ryu as huckster goofs, the comedy punch of Zangief & DeeJay, coked-up Guile slurring his dialogue, SAWADA THE GREATEST STREET FIGHTER CHARACTER... it's a perfect storm of things that shouldn't work, but became magic
Glad to see you were so kind to Raul Julia. I know I was disappointed and confused when I first saw Street Fighter in my teens at the Theater. That movie was a stinkburger, but Raul was the shining point of that film. As well as the yucks done by the other cast such as Van Damme. RIP Raul Julia.
Saw this in theaters when it came out in a double bill with Richie Rich. Say what you want, but there are some great comedy moments. "You got paid??" Zangief and E Honda fighting in the miniature city like kaiju. And Wes Studi kills it as Sagat. Couldn't be better casting. E Honda calmly taking a beating due to his Sumo zen-ness. "Next time your mind goes out, can it bring back a pizza?" But Linden Ashby makes me very glad Van Damme didn't end up being Johnny Cage.
Double Dragon, SuperMario Bros, Street Fighters, these movies are bad but they're so singular, so zany, you can't help but find them entertaining anyway. New video game adaptations are mostly soulless. It's like they come from a sameish factory standard, with a few tweaks on the script to vaguely make it source accurate * coughs * Resident Evil's action movies.
Funny you guys are one of the few to remember Kylie Minogue; I saw this movie recently and when I commented on it, someone was like "well she didn't do much"...which is funny cause I liked her as Cammy. Though it's funnier that Ming-Na Wen is Chun considering she's just in all the geek stuff (see how she basically is in Star Wars and Marvel and a Disney Princess....and she's Chun-Li)
Love this movie, great and accurate review. That Police Squad footage is actually Balrog deleted scenes or a prequel, and no one's convincing me otherwise. About the boxing gloves though, they're actually not intended to soften the boxers' punches but rather to protect their hands from repeated impacts. So it sort of makes sense he'd wear them for battle.

11:38 Zangief has a face turn, and then in the cartoon(which acts as a sequel to this movie),he's back with M.Bison again with no explanation!
Please both of you never stop. You guys rock
Bison! Whatcha gonna do...WHEN PASTAMANIA RUNS WILD ON YOU?
This movie really took a deep dive into Street Fighter lore.
How often do people remember Street Fighter was integrated into GI Joe just the year prior to this movie's release?
With that in mind the movie makes perfect sense.
I believe that's how Ken got the last name Masters. Mattel had the copyright on the name Ken for dolls so Hasbro gave him a proper last name.
@@bull705 I think you're right.
@@bull705 whoa he has a last name?!
The Adams family movies came out when I was 3 and 4, I didn't appreciate them until I was grown up...
I think you guys might actually really enjoy Red Dwarf. Especially if you watch it together.
Is the answer, to it being better than we remember, no? Keep up the great work! Love the channel.
You two are awesome together 🤩
Great job guys! Loved the vid!
Y'all published this video on my 38th birthday 😁 I enjoy watching these videos.
It is interesting that they got everyone from the game, except Fei Long and Akuma (who was actually in the arcade game), also Phelous now needs to review all the SF cartoon series
At least they didn’t do sequels like Street Fighter 2: Championship Edition, Street Fighter 2: Turbo Edition, Super Street Fighter 2 …..😐
I have missed you reviewing films, fantastic video.
Good point!
I love Raoul Julia. Watched this film and it's a riot.
Raul Julia. Nothing the man was in was bad. By his sheer presence, it was awesome. Now, when he’s off camera, well, nothing is perfect.
Latin charm and infectious charisma rolled into one man. Thinking about him is enough to make me want to rewatch the Addams family movies =)
RIP
Glad to see you were so kind to Raul Julia. I know I was disappointed and confused when I first saw Street Fighter in my teens at the Theater. That movie was a stinkburger, but Raul was the shining point of that film. As well as the yucks done by the other cast such as Van Damme. RIP Raul Julia.
Once again another review by Allison and Phelous that's better than Class traitor Doug Walker review of the same movie
Um it’s best you don’t mention him but we get what you mean 😅
Always awesome seeing you two work together fab team 👍
I actually loved this movie.
Saw this in theaters when it came out in a double bill with Richie Rich.
Say what you want, but there are some great comedy moments.
"You got paid??"
Zangief and E Honda fighting in the miniature city like kaiju.
And Wes Studi kills it as Sagat. Couldn't be better casting.
E Honda calmly taking a beating due to his Sumo zen-ness. "Next time your mind goes out, can it bring back a pizza?"
But Linden Ashby makes me very glad Van Damme didn't end up being Johnny Cage.
It’s um bonfire night where I am and seeing you guys review this has made it extra special 😎👍
This movie is still 10 times better than most video game adaptations today
She was also the voice of Jade in The Spawn Animated Series
funny how they're talking about Street Fighter yet they're clearly in Outworld during this entire review.
