My hometown was where the first Halloweentown was filmed (and some scenes of Twilight as well). They have embraced the nostalgia for the film and every year, they hold a Halloweentown celebration, with lighting the giant pumpkin (it was originally the prop from the movie, but it was replaced with a metal one eventually). They invite the actors for meets and greets, and dress up the town a little. Not to the same level as the actual movie, but maybe someday! They also have Benny's cab too. Its really fun to see the love of this movie still thrive so many years later. It was fun when I moved there as a kid and saw all the locations in one of my favorite D-Coms in the flesh. Saw a bunch of movies in that theater too.
Y'know, I bet a darker take on this movie would have implied Kalabar- sorry, Chocolatebar- had something to do with Papa Cromwell's absence. If it actually did, I musta missed it.
While I love Halloweentown, I personally find its sequel, Halloweentown 2, to be the best of the series. I feel like that one decided to kick things up, get a little darker and increase the stakes. The production on it looks really good for a TV movie, like the creature costumes are better than the first (then again it doesn't have as many creatures to show off til act 3, so they could afford to give them the time and money to look good and spooky). Plus, it's the movie that introduced Kimberly J. Brown to her future husband, which is a huge plus
not gonna lie, any time I hear Debbie Reynolds voice, I get all teary eyed. It's charlotte's web, and then I cry. And then Paul Lynde.... sniff sniff, good video.
Halloweentown was the definition of "Remember when Disney Channel Original Movies weren't mostly dumb musicals?". Sure, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows back then for DCOMs... but Halloweentown was that one special movie you could put on during Halloween and not cringe through it.
Seeing this movie at my grandmother's house only helped to feed my childhood Halloween obsession. I even wrote a story set in Halloweentown when I was 9 for a school writing project!
Hades IS the name of the god, but eventually his name did become synonymous with the general Greek underworld. Tartarus is actually similar in that way, being the name of a primordial diety AND the deepest abyss where the Olympian gods put their enemies, like most of the Titans, and people who they wanted to severely punish, like Tantalus and Sisyphus.
My mom and i watch this movie EVERY year for Halloween!! "It was turning us evil, LIKE THE CHARMED ONES!!!" "Grandma who are the charmed ones??" "...." "Grandma?" "....." "..Grandma..?" "...." "G-grandma-" *hag laughter in the distance*
In retrospect, the mom was kinda toxic with literally trying to erase her children's heritage and steal it from them by holding out until her kids lost their chance at magic/being able to fully embrace their heritage forever
That's a sticking point any of the many times that a fictional family with a magic secret hopes it'll skip a generation and hopes the kid will be 'normal'. In a good story, that parent having severe issues with themselves and who they are will be explored. But only kinda bad writing comes to mind at the moment: Teen Wolf, Charmed, Halloweentown, Sabrina, American Dragon Jake Long ... never gets explored as a bad parenting decision to try to force 'normality'.
I remember when I was a kid I had seen The Nightmare Before Christmas and then watched this and was really confused about why Jack Skellington wasn't in this. From my perspective the production values really took a step down between the two.
I absolutely loved the Halloween Town movies as a kid! If I saw them on TV around this time of year, I had to drop everything and watch. Oh, and goodness!! Allison, those overalls are SO cute, and they look GREAT on you!
Really like the back to back reviews you guys are putting out on nostalgic horror movies for all ages. Especially this time capsule of old school Disney Channel Original Movies that may or may not have inspired The Owl House.
I was too old (early 20s) for this movie when it came out and so don’t have the childhood nostalgia attached to it. I can certainly see how, had I been younger at the time, feeling that way about it though.
I remember, it’s either this movie or a movie with a similar plot that burned a scene in my mind. At one point a character in the real world (at some kind of amusement park) is shown becoming one with their mask and the movie plays it like the person is suffocating. Terrifying to child me.
i always wondered if nightmare before christmas and Halloween town were in the same world. the part where jack skellington and the others are it's always night but the part where Aggie Cromwell and the others live it's always day. otherwise disney is just lazy in renaming a monster themed town twice xD
25:35 -- Allison was correct. "Hades" has also been used to refer to his realm (the underworld) on the whole. Tartarus is only one part of it (the worst part, where the most notorious of sinners would go to receive their punishment, and where the Titans were sent after the Titanomachy). Most humans would be sent to the Asphodel Meadows (unless they were heros or said notorious sinners).
im so happy you guys talked about this series. it feels like alt universe charmed ones if they where allowed to know about everything and grow up with it.
Firstly Happy Halloween, Secondly I remember watching Halloweentown and it’s sequels when I was kid and thirdly Debbie Reynolds was such a good actress that she didn’t phone it in for a Disney Channel Movie
My mom and brother grew up loving these films. I think I saw the 2nd and 3rd ones, but I was more jaded even though Halloween is my favorite holiday. Happy Halloween and Festival of Samhain to you, Phelous, and everyone who reads this (even after the fact).
Happy Halloween to Allison and Phelan! I never saw this one as a kid, but I probably would have enjoyed it quite a bit. It's always cool to see Judith Hoag in something. She's pretty great in most anything I've ever seen her in.
I’m so happy you gave this a positive review. Yeah, I mean, sure, some of the costumes and set designs might not be high quality, but it's a Disney Channel movie from the 2000s. It's not gonna have the same production values as say, The Last of Us. I'm really glad you kept that perspective, unlike some other reviewers. Even Phelan, who doesn't see it through the same rose-tinted glasses, admits to enjoying it for what it is. This is why you guys are my favorite reviewers.
I grew up near where they filmed this. They have a big gathering every year to celebrate the movie. I also grew up with it in general and I do have fond memories of it. Also just fun to know that the filming took place near Oaks park which I also grew up with. Always glad to see you both P.s. Find another reason to work with OSW!!!
Allison. Allison! I have a suggestion for next year! You and Phelous should watch "When Good Ghouls go Bad." It's about a town that doesn't celebrate Halloween because of a curse cast by a Tim Burton kid who burned to death, but more importantly it's got Christopher Lloyd as a zombie.
I was and still am a HUGE FAN of Halloweentown. I had great memories of watching it every Halloween growing up and now it's a Traditional movie every year for The Spooky Season. Happy Halloween, Allison and Phelous thanks for the great review🎃🎃
Whoa! Not some SG1 references all of a sudden! I think I was at an age when this came out I would've thought watching any Disney Channel movie was too weenie. Shame. I probably would've loved it and have found nostalgia for it now like you.
This movie was a huge part of my childhood. Also I’ll never forget that someone supposedly named their cat after the sequels title. Like the cat was literally named Halloween Town Two Kalabars Revenge.
This is so good. My late daughter and i would watch this and hocus pocus. Everyone loves on hocus pocus but this film is even better for campy fun times imo 😂. Love this. However yes they explained the bus a lot more in the sequels. I love the things you brought up that i didnt even know having watched this probably 10+ times. 😅
To this day, I curse Disney for not giving a “Halloweentown” versus “Hocus Pocus” crossover. Some of us wanted to see Grandma Aggie and Winifred fight for Halloweentown supremacy 🙄 I wish they’d reboot it animation-style so they could show way more Halloweentown and magical effects
Love your channel! This movie was my childhood! It wasn’t really Halloween season until you watched this on Disney :) This was one of my favs, I remember my fam all sitting down to this, and the second one was still a fave, I loved Kalabar haha but marnie was who I always played pretend as lol
Great video! I remember really loving Halloweentown and Halloweentown II as a kid, probably because it was always playing on the Disney channel in October and the grandma in the movie reminded me of my Grammy.
The Mermaid one was also good... it had the seeds of a very good plot in there, even if it didn't fully follow through on some of those. The one where a boy turns into a merman after 13 years of living on land thinking he's an ordinary human. the only other one's I really remember off the top of my head were the Zena... Zeon... the space station girl & uh, Smart House? The one with the AI house. Oh, there was that one about Leprechauns... that was... a good example of how not to make... any of the things it was...
They aren't necessarily ''must rewatch every October'' favorites like Hocus Pocus or The Nightmare Before Christmas, but I do have a lot of nostalgic fondness for the first 2 Halloweentown movies. Probably the only Disney Channel Original movies that I've ever genuinely loved.
Y'know there are some interesting parallels between the grandma in this and grandma ghost from Charmed - belief in the superiority of the magical races, hatred of men...
I think the skeleton originally had a cigarette and they cut it out of the reruns and possibly the version on Disney+ too, I heard something like that.
I loved this review, as well as Halloween 1 &2. Have to wonder who would win Charmed Ones vs. Cromwells (Assuming Piper can't explode them right off the bat.)
That is very true. I had a brain fart. I'm use to most people I'm subscribed to posting once a month. Thank you again for all the great content Allison. ❤
Oh, yes, MERLIN!

I like the idea of a cigar-smoking skeleton cabbie. They could have the smoke come out of it's eyes or something.
Makes me think of the creepy cab driver from Bill Murray's A Christmas Carol.

Considering how bratty Marnie was, I would make sure she didn’t get magic powers either.
@@MoonShadowWolfea smart writer could also use it as an allegory for cultural assimilation in immigrant families or repression of queer identities
I think trying to pass different things off as aurora borealis is going to become my signature move
I loved Halloweentown 1 and 2 as a kid! I'm not really sure why but I remember liking 2 better than 1. I hope you guys do videos on the sequels too
2 is like the edgy teen sequel to the first one, I can see liking it especially as a teen at the time (I mean I did)
Absolutely they need to look at all the sequels! I like the 2nd one more too 😅
*lights a candle in the pumpkin*
For Debbie. 🥀
Is Phelan wearing a human Darkwing Duck jacket? Also, glad to see you're both doing more projects together
I like to believe that Halloweentown was where all the monsters went at the end of Nightbreed, when Midean fell. So its family friendly Clive Barker.
The perfect couple to talk about Halloweentown 🎃 💜
This is the first time I have seen Phelous's face, honesty imagined him looking like Randy Jackson from the X Factor for some reason
I remember when I was a kid I had seen The Nightmare Before Christmas and then watched this and was really confused about why Jack Skellington wasn't in this. From my perspective the production values really took a step down between the two.
This movie is basically The Nightmare Before Christmas if it was directed by a soccer mom.
Me too. I was so upset back then Jack not being there. Mom tried telling me the cab driver was him, but I knew for a fact it wasn’t.
"Hey Chocolate Bar!" Ooh no coming back from that sick burn.
Halloween my favorite time of the year going out trick-or-treating with my girlfriend and friends dressed as a union civil war soldier.
Kalibar’s real form terrified me as a kid
I absolutely loved the Halloween Town movies as a kid! If I saw them on TV around this time of year, I had to drop everything and watch.
Oh, and goodness!! Allison, those overalls are SO cute, and they look GREAT on you!
Thanks so much!
You'd think Halloweentown would be perpetually clouded over for the poor little vampire kids.
22:26 - PLEASE, Oh please do an episode based around Scrooged! Beyond that suggestion, thanks for the fun video here and keep up the great work.
Halloweentown and its sequels were my absolute fave childhood halloween movies, glad to see you and Phelan covering it ^_^
Really like the back to back reviews you guys are putting out on nostalgic horror movies for all ages.
Especially this time capsule of old school Disney Channel Original Movies that may or may not have inspired The Owl House.
15:08 - Y'd think the whole "that's illogical" thing would make you quote Shockwave... I was not aware there was a logic-obsessed pony too?
I was too old (early 20s) for this movie when it came out and so don’t have the childhood nostalgia attached to it. I can certainly see how, had I been younger at the time, feeling that way about it though.
I recall these movies also asserted that conjoined twins and pirates aren't human.

You might be thinking of the Goosebumps Horrorland or Haunted Mask episodes.
I think the cliche Chosen One plot hurt Return to Halloweentown as a movie as much as the Marnie recast hurt it emotionally
I laughed so hard at this one. I'm trying to do work and just a giggle as my boss looks at me.
Omg the HALLOWEENTOWN and Charmed edit 😂😂
i always wondered if nightmare before christmas and Halloween town were in the same world. the part where jack skellington and the others are it's always night but the part where Aggie Cromwell and the others live it's always day. otherwise disney is just lazy in renaming a monster themed town twice xD
Friend of mine had a scene in this that was cut. She and her son were vampires in a dentist waiting room.
RIP vampire waiting room scene

For a certain segment of millennials, Kimberly J Brown was a formative part of our late childhood/early adolescence
Firstly Happy Halloween, Secondly I remember watching Halloweentown and it’s sequels when I was kid and thirdly Debbie Reynolds was such a good actress that she didn’t phone it in for a Disney Channel Movie
First The Addams Family and now Halloweentown? Y'all are spoiling us today!

"Mom can I go to Hogwartz?"

I was and still am a HUGE FAN of Halloweentown. I had great memories of watching it every Halloween growing up and now it's a Traditional movie every year for The Spooky Season. Happy Halloween, Allison and Phelous thanks for the great review🎃🎃
Halloweentown High was the movie that was new when I was watching Disney Channel, so that’s the entry I have the most fondness for.
Chocolate bar is such a good name for that guy xD
I like your pumpkin overalls. You always have cool clothes.

The Town of St Helens Oregon where they filmed Halloweentown goes all in every October.

Halloweentown might be more than just another dimension; it could be a nexus point of magical energies and connections to other realms.
The best part of the Chocolate Bar burn is that "candy bar" is so much closer to his actual name
The perfect kids Halloween movie
The original Halloweentown is classic and camp in the best way.
They call him Chocolate Bar when Mallomar is clearly the more hurtful choice
Allison, I love the earrings.
Phelan, I love the suit.
Tartarus is the term for the whole of the underworld/afterlife in Greek myth, Hades is the part of Tartarus where bad people go.
Thank you ❤
Amazing video and I love the Halloween town movies.
Happy Halloween! I only just so remember this movie. I may not have seen too much of it.
Wooo! Loved these movies as a kid. Looking forward to watching this review with dinner! ❤

I know, right? Those chibi shorts they did a couple years back were adorable, give us more, Disney
Happy Halloween 2023🎃🐈⬛🦇👻🪦
Nightmare before Christmas is a much better Disney Halloween Movie.
Before Halloweentown, my mom had a VCR recording of The Halloween That Almost Wasn't (1979) and that used to be my cheesy Halloween movie.

Stargate stingers now, the editor is stepping up the game now
I live 5 minutes from where they filmed all the downtown scenes - they decorate it like they did in the movie in October.
That’s dope
