Many of us Boomers were bridge kids between the Big Band Crooners and Led Zeppelin - our tastes in music are eclectic - to say the least.
I'm 75 and like to listen to so many varied musical styles ... confuses my grandkids --- a lot.

@Ralph Kern --- Same here. I'm 72. Como was my mother's favorite singer back in the 50s. She also had all the Doris Day albums. --- My older sister was huddled in her room listening to Elvis and Fats Domino 45s on one of those little record players that snapped close like a mini suitcase.

You just tickled awake some sleeping cells in my brain's memory bank! My mother worked at a retirement home in Rochester N.Y. he was always calling her while on concert from one city to another. But when he returned to NY. he would go and visit his Mama and one day in particular while mom was doing something outside of the retirement home she noticed that his car which was something else for the time in the mid 50's a wee little boy was calling out to him when he recognized the Singer. He was asking for an autograph, the reverse lights came on and the vehicle backed towards the little boy. Perry signed his autograph and gave him a 100 $ bill and thanked him for liking his singing. That was never written up in the newspapers but it was part of that kind of class of a singer from that time. It was a little black boy who he made sure to sign his paper and thank him. Thanks for your life Perry.

Perry Como had a number of hit songs from the late 1930s, right into the early 50s. A few where you could hear some noticeable power in his voice. He was one of the 'smoothest' crooners from that era.

Perry was definitely Italian. Bing came from an Irish background but he spawned a bunch of Italian crooners.
I looked for ward to his Christmas Specials which were just as popular as the Andy Williams Christmas shows.
From 1957 "Catch A Falling Star." From 1969 "Seattle." From the 1970s "And I Love You So" and "It's Impossible."

Perry Como --the singing barber (1912-2001) was from Canonsburg, Pa. Bobby Vinton is from there too. He had quite the career with some monster hits even in the 1970s. All the crooners found inspiration from Bing Crosby, and Perry was no different in that regard. He Dean Martin were good friends. Perry was so low key and casual. Dean would kid him and say "I came over to your show to borrow some sleep."
You'd have to know Mister C. to appreciate it. But in a live performance (he didn't do a studio cut of it) he sings a funny song about himself called "If I Could Almost Read Your Mind."

Perry had Xmas specials every year on t.v. through the 70's as I recall as a kid. I'm the in-between generation . Born late 60's so got the best of all of it. Love all music from crooners, to bluegrass hillbilly, to rap, to headbanging metal to folk to afro-beats like Fela Kuti. My dad was latino (born raised in california) and my mom-straight up Irish (grandparents born in Ireland) so grateful for the multi-cultural perspective.

First I want to tell you how much I enjoy your channel with your wide array of music. I have a Perry Como recommendation for you that no one has mentioned yet that I'll think you'll enjoy Prisoner of Love. There are 2 other versions of this song that I would highly recommend. First one is by one of the writers of this song Russ Columbo who tragically died at the age of 26 way back in 1934 in a very freak gun accident. The other version I love is by Billy Eckstein who sadly seems to have been forgotten by most people. Billy worked a lot with both Duke Ellington & Sarah Vaughan. His voice was as smooth as butter & as warm & inviting as a fuzzy blanket. Thank you for your excellent reaction channel.

Many people don't realize that this was one of the very first Burt Bacharach/Hal David compositions - they were working at the legendary Brill Building. Their first songs tended to be novelty tunes, and this song has a bit of that feel. It wasn't long before Bacharach changed to more of an R&B vein, and discovered his muse, Dionne Warwick.

I was listening to WDVE radio from Pittsburgh PA once and the morning show had a comedian on who was going to do a show at one of the clubs. They asked him who his favorite celeb was and he said Perry Como. He saif it was because when Petty retired, he meant it. He stopped doing concerts, or recording music. Instead he took it easy and played golf. Even when offered large sums of money to perform again, he'd say, " No, I'm retired!" The comedian said he had nothing but respect for a man like that, who meant what he said.

For a song that whistles in it, one of my favorites is another song from the 50s! It is called "Singing the Blues" by Guy Mitchell! Many people did a cover of that song but Guy Mitchell has a great whistle in it and I still do it from time to time!
Now, you got reminded of Christmas, Perry Como did "(There's No Place Like) Home for the Holidays"! But other songs to listen to from Perry would be "And I Love You So" (also, give Don McLean a listen on this song too), "Papa Love Mambo", "If", "It's Impossible" but you can't go wrong with Perry Como!

Harri, if you want to cry you have to listen to It's Impossible. It's beautiful. I was a teenager when it was released in the late sisties and I wanted no part of music like that because that was my parents music. Then one night I needed to get up early the next day and I couldn't go to sleep. I had a transistor radio (google it, 😉) and I put it under my pillow. It's Impossible came on and relaxed me so much I was able to drift off soon after it was finished. His voice is incredible and like others have said he was so low key that he could just put you at ease. You will love it.
I also like Seattle which was a theme song from a tv show when I was a kid. There was another song I like called Round and Round or something like that. I was very young when that was out.

He does sound a lot like Bing Crosby. I watched a live Perry Como video I found recently. He had his own TV show in the 50s called The Perry Como Show (imagine that). He also had a very dry wit! Such a gentleman! Thank you for all these old songs I grew up hearing!🙏 Andy Williams was another great & I just found out yesterday that he passed away in 2012. His show was The Andy Williams Show! 😁He had a lot of huge hits too!

Elvis has a great song called "Life". I have never heard this one on any of the reaction channels.

Someone in my extended family once describe Perry Como's style as "artless", which doesn't mean what it sounds like, it means free of artificiality, natural, unpretentious, simple, and that may be what's coming across to you like partly talking. Perry also sang with power on occasion--here's a live performance of September Song, which Frank Sinatra recorded at least a couple times, one of which is better known.

This is a very beautiful song! It reminds me a lot to my dad, he used to listen to it and repeat it over and over again, and now I listen to it to remember him. There’s another song I heard with a very particular whistle, it’s called Daisy by Mike Waters, I like it a lot, hope you can check it out, cheers!

Whistling is more popular during the 40's and 50's.... I can mention a few songs that have whistling featured.....1- Sukiyaki by Kyu Sakimoto 1963, Born to be with you by the Chordettes 1956. In 1978 Art Garfunkel did a song called Disney Girls and Don Robertston -The Happy Whistler an instrumental that features whistling through the entire song. Great work thank you

@@gary17509 I liked Sukiyaki as well. You might want to give a listen if you have a chance to the songs I mentioned above. All are available on UA-cam as well. Thanks for your reply.
