They're beautiful! I own a black GT 2021 model. I'm 53 yo, 6ft2in and heavyset and this bike has been great. I've always ridden big sport bikes, my last being a Kawasaki ZX14 Ninja 2010 (ZZR 1400 in England I think), but I started struggling with the aggressive riding position due to osteo issues in my neck, back and hips. I had to stop regularly and couldn't do long rides. The Rocket GT's laid back position is perfect for body and mind, I'm riding far less aggressively without losing performance. Hopefully my forever bike, it's true love 😍
I bought the 2020 Rocket 3R. For me it was a better fit. I'm 6 foot 208 lbs. I sit perfectly comfortable. I tried the GT and I didn't like it at all. The forward pegs were not comfortable to me. I didn't like going around turns with my feet so forward. The bars coming back felt uncomfortable. As far as the wind, I felt free and happy. Doesn't bother me. Mine is a stock R and does not have a windscreen. Just the piece above the headlights. It is enough to push the wind above my helmet. Probably for shorter people, you could put the GT bars on the R and have the short reach fixed and not have your forward foot pegs. Being a big guy, I love my R and can ride it all day for miles and smiles.

Just for information, Triumph do a mid-peg kit for the GT so you can get the best of both worlds. I'm about to have mine changed for the very reasons MotoBob talks about - you can't easily lift your weight off the seat but also because there are times when a quick dab of foot is needed and there's a delay from the forward pegs to the road. You also have to reach forward to the gear change when you're riding off which can be a bit iffy with a heavy bike. I'll be asking Triumph if they can do the mid peg conversion but leave the forward pegs in place. Sorted (if possible)!

I took a Rocket 3 (non GT) out for a spin last year, was never going to buy a bike like that but it was good fun. Fat, low and fast is a lot of fun but where I ride it would never make much sense. Not sure where in the UK it would make sense but for someone with more than one bike maybe it's the sunny day quick blast bike.
I have the same motorcycle and its a blast i was changing motorcycles every 5 years from sport to cruiser and so on but with this Rocket i think i find the best of the two world its a cruiser mix with a muscle bike for big torque and 167 hp for power and fast riding its my dream bike it a keeper for sure. Ride safe mate.
My father got the GTa month ago he just had the 500 or 600 miles service done and he had the Werks tail pipe put on and it sounds positively evil. I love it
Aye, great bikes 💪 🚀 It’s funny Bob, after two extended rides of the GT I found it a bit too laid back, especially in corners and you can’t push through the forward pegs and that’s where the R has a real edge over the GT, tipping in and altering line mid corner. I bought the R and it’s much more chuckable but worth using with the shift assist and you can wind round till 7k, even the R is slight mid-forward. I have a mate and when on a cruise he brings the R18, but if we go to the hills then he brings the R9T... I am 5 10” but have a 32-33” inside seam and longer arms so maybe that’s the difference? Good points all round & about pegs.. My back is pretty straight and I find the mid pegs just support the back etc, and with sportier bars makes bike feel a bit more aggressive but still super comfy for longer runs :) silly big beastie!
Love both but Prefer the r. Road both. Adding a screen to the r is easy. Not a fan of the standard foot pegs on the gt and I dont need pillion back rests. Im also 6ft 3 so the bars works well. The r with the pillion infill shows more of the lovely paintwork. If I wanted a 2 up touring bike I'd probably opt for a k1600 or gold wing.
Completely agree with your assessment. Initially, I preferred the R Model; but - I have ordered a GT with mid position foot rests. I also prefer the style of wheels on the the GT compared to the R model. Basically, as I told the Triumph dealer, the foot rest position was the "deal breaker" for me as I didn't feel safe or comfortable with my feet forward. The advantage (for me) was I also get the fly screen, heated grips, swept back bars, and back rest with the GT.
I have been a Bike admirer from afar for years and recently stumbled across these. I'm in the process of getting my Bike License and I'd love one. Probably overkill as a first or second Bike but I'd definitely take something like this over a full fat Sports Bike.
Great review. Add a real windscreen, hand guards, panniers, and aftermarket heated seat inserts, for a perfect power cruiser, tourer. I've owned Victory bikes (Jackpot/Cross Country) 100 hp at near 700-800 lbs respectively, and did tons of cruising and touring on them, so with the R3s far better features expect it to be a great bike to live with.
I bought the R version but specced it with the GT accessories plus quick shifter. I may swap out the bars at some point, I think it could make for a great compromise.
Aye, Diavel a proper hyper naked.. Was torn with Diavel and R3r tbh then I passed one on the Rocket 🚀 ...Ducati looked way smaller and I knew then I’d made the right decision 8) and that Rocket mid range torque just cannot be matched even if Diavel quicker top end..
@@giantslug6969 aye thanks mate, I heard there’s a limiter in the top gears, maybe one for the future but tbh up to a ton it’s an absolute awesome beast and more than enough for me 👍🏼 8)
Great review Bob and being only 5'7" I would prefer the mid mount pegs also, just one suggestion for Triumph !!! would love the twin sound for this bike as they have done with the new 900 adventure, that would make it a true beast, great as it is but would really sound fantastic I think !!!!!
I'm loving my 2022 221 Edition GT. Traded a 2022 Harley CVO Road Glide Limited for it. That bike was awesome in its own right but at 300 lbs heavier than the Rocket it took more concentration in turns and especially low speed. I honestly thought leaving the full fairing behind would be a big problem but I don't feel all that much more wind on the Rocket.
GT would be my choice, comfortable fun with all that torque…love the looks too. Maybe not that practical for rural Northumberland though, more suited to my GSA😜 PS. It would look better with twin dials like the Speed Twin though.
thanks for your review. I picked up my gt friday.... so somfy and fast. needed a bit to get used to the forward pegs, only had Sport bikes, but easily used to it.
On the subject of pillions, when I'd just passed my test I took my wife on the CB125R I had. Needless to say it was very slow ! Also I think we were at the load capacity.
I found exactly the same Bob. At 5'6", the bars suited me fine, but as my legs were stretching for the forward pegs, it felt like the wind, combined with the savage acceleration, wanted to push my feet back off the controls. How tall are you btw?
Wicked review buddy, I brought an R as there was nothing near me at all, had it a month but struggling with the wrists as I build like a hampster.... Long body and short limbs, just watched you review and booking in for a GT at the weekend. ;)
I am 6'4"/ 200 lbs. The GT was wayyyyy better ride then the R for me. I love this bike and the looks of it. I just could not agree with lack of accessories to make it as a commuter bike daily to work. It is 100% fun bike to ride. Triumph did a superb design on this one. I almost did it but walked off the dealer and went to Honda dealer to get the new GW DCT Tour. I sure later on, more options and access will make this a pleasure to buy.
You bought a Honda over possibly the greatest bike design ever, and on top of that its a Triumph and its British ..... you made the biggest mistake of your pathetic life.
@@michaelbrett3749 Good one, Mike...LOL. Maybe I did, however I still have a comfort living with my English girl, so no complains. You ride what's fine for you and I ride mine.....😄
My GT has the GT bars R mid control combo along with the triumph shift assist, you may have seen it at the superbike factory workshop when you was walking through, so if you want to revisit the rocket with this combo your welcome to use mine 👍🏻
MOTOBOB prefers the GT... I genuinely didn’t see that twist coming...!! I personally like the idea of a 3R Black with GT bars.👌No pillion, no flyscreen - just hoonage
sorry to be off topic but does anyone know of a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost my login password. I would love any help you can give me!
Another reviewer said the windscreen works best over 200 mph (322km/h). Your review is the first I've heard anyone say to move the pegs back... they're always "R or GT"... not GT and move pegs back.
Just curious as I'm having the same thoughts: did you get the R infills for the "indentations" in the fender or how did you solve it once the backrest was gone?
I think you have the same idea as I have. The forward foot controls are just not comfortable nor confidence inspiring. One of the reasons I sold my Speedmaster and purchased a Speed Twin. Do you think one could change the forward foot controls for the mid controls without to much problem?
Your other half needs to make more guest appearances. She could do a pillion opinion. Even if it's just a stationary first impression. It would be nice to own, but it would take a lottery win and be one of 5 or 6 bikes. Unless I had a massive garage, I'd soon get bored of trying to move the flipping thing. My bandit 12 was too heavy and became so much of a faff to get out of the shed, I couldn't be bothered to ride it. And that's never good...
Yeah it was a bit of a pain around the garage. Most bikes I can turn quite easily on the driveway without moving the car if I need a different angle for filming, but not the rocket!
I need to test ride both styles. I originally always wanted a Suzuki M109r Boss but didn't like it once I rode it because of forward swept foot controls. The R version seems like it would be more comfortable since I currently ride a FZ-07
BOB - you’re welcome to ride and film my 3R Black with its touring seat and handle bars (but lowered the midset pegs). I think it’s perfect, but feel free to have a go! I live in Bristol
Awesome bike totally agree with u as a shorty the GT but with mid controls. I had a Kawasaki VulcanS a few years ago couldn’t get on with the forward controls just doesn’t seem a natural riding position to me. Great vlog as always Rob👍
I got the R much nicer riding position for me more aggressive. The GT felt like the old man's version I also like the rims on the R wasn't a fan of the GT wheels at all
Picked up MY21ROK on the 2/3/2021 (they were shut on the 1st), mid position pegs and quick shifter transforms what is already an epic machine, If you want to do a quick review on the subtle differences feel free to get in touch.
Love my Indian Chieftain but it is a tad bit too heavy at 800+ pounds. Considering selling it and buying the Rocket 3 GT. The looks of this thing are stunning and that single sided swingarm..... :)
When I got the rocket it had the pegs up front. The bike shops put the other pegs on and quikshift on for $1000. NZD. I still have forward pegs. Every thing you said about the rocket 3 gt is spot on. If you get one change the pegs and get quick shift. You will not be disappointed and money well spent.
The quick shift looks like a small hydraulic setup that pushes a little fluid into clutch serkit as you move the gear pedal. At about 140 kph the pegs in R position give you an or_ some grip on the bike and so comfortable.
I am test riding the GT at Pidcocks this week,I sat on the R model, then sat on the GT.I`m 53 and a short arse,30" leg.The Gt is better, for short arses.Lol!Both bikes awesome ...
I'm typically a 800cc to 1,000 guy, 2,500 cc is a bit much for me! However, I am surprised that Triumph didn't think of 3 sizes for the Rocket III, 900c, (mini Rocket) 1,800cc, (medium Rocket) and 2,700 cc, (Big Rocket)? I would go for a 900 cc version! Food for thought?
Great review. I noticed your comment about the jolt on your spine with rough roads due to the feet forward but how bad is it and how 'squidgy' is the suspension? I currently have the Harley Road King and this is exactly one of the reasons that I am looking at swapping my bike, but the Harley suspension is about as useful as a chocolate fireguard, any idea how the Rocket's compares?
Awesome. Had a test ride 2 days ago. Surprisingly good handling. Rolls over on that massive rear tyre. Didn't expect to like it as much as I did. GT with mid footrests definitely the way to go for me. Go go a test ride.
Ergonomics really make or break a bike, which is why I'd have to take the R. Lower back surgery ruins that upright position for me, I need to lean forward. A shame, because the GT fits my riding style better.
This is an AMAZING machine! Pure beauty!!!!!!!!!!! does it have panniers for the GT? if so, large enough to carry a weekend bag and a drone? Great job R!
It's a beautiful bike but I'm not quite sure what box it ticks, other than the wow factor. I ended up buying a GS1250 as my only bike as I mainly use it to commute and some weekend outings in the Paris region. Hopefully, after lockdown some longer trips😊 But I can't imagine riding the rocket around a city or doing long motorway trips with no protection, and surely there are better bikes for twisties or even out and out acceleration?

another great video you are right about the forward controls and of course I will anger a lot of people here 100% of the time forward controls are all about form over function it never makes sense to ride a motorcycle that way and I have no idea why people do you have absolutely no control over that vehicle no matter how tall or short you are you and I both know that other people sit around and praise motorcycles like the Indian scout which is horrendously uncomfortable to ride for people of all sizes but no one will admit that mid controls on the GT version is genius you and i are the same size thanks for all you do

With the mid controls, absolutely perfect. Hard to pick between the two.
My father got the GTa month ago he just had the 500 or 600 miles service done and he had the Werks tail pipe put on and it sounds positively evil. I love it
If a bodybuilder was a motorbike it would be the Rocket 3
No stage 4 needed like Harley
I spent 30k to get my m8 to have this performance... and it's a reliability nightmare.
@motobob can you make a comparison with the Diavel? Visordown already has it, but I'd still love to hear your opinion
I’ll try!
Been looking at these bikes for over a year now. Had to get a house though. And we all know how affordable those are right now.
I bought the R version but specced it with the GT accessories plus quick shifter. I may swap out the bars at some point, I think it could make for a great compromise.
Quickshifter must be great with that engine!
I'd still go for the Duc Diavel, but I must say Triumph has put some sharp looking bikes on the market lately.
@@78Outlaw R3 is gutted on top end in the ECU. A tune fixes that and gives it a heavy boost in the higher revs.
@@giantslug6969 aye thanks mate, I heard there’s a limiter in the top gears, maybe one for the future but tbh up to a ton it’s an absolute awesome beast and more than enough for me 👍🏼 8)
@@giantslug6969 any tuner recommended or should any good dyno tuner should be able to do? I heard with dyno Rockets seeing 170hp+ to the wheel 😳
Nope chain driven deal-breaker to lazy shaft driven zero maintenance
Great review Bob and being only 5'7" I would prefer the mid mount pegs also, just one suggestion for Triumph !!! would love the twin sound for this bike as they have done with the new 900 adventure, that would make it a true beast, great as it is but would really sound fantastic I think !!!!!
The design is outstanding art . The manufacture is a masterpiece of achievement. All together, this is a world landmark icon , beyond any doubt.
Test ride it (GT) last week. Surprisingly comfortable than I imagined.
???????????????????????????????????????
@@pontypete7357 what's the question Pete ??? 🙂 ( I guess I might have gone off topic ... )
I found exactly the same Bob. At 5'6", the bars suited me fine, but as my legs were stretching for the forward pegs, it felt like the wind, combined with the savage acceleration, wanted to push my feet back off the controls. How tall are you btw?
At 5' 6", tall is the wrong word ; )
I hear you and I will get the R version with the GT add ons no matter the cost.
Mid pegs are life!! Love your videos Mr Motobob from Kissimmee Florida
Every review of the Rocket 3 has the rider chuckling or laughing when they open up the throttle!
@@michaelbrett3749 So a) it's not the greatest bike design ever and b) it's not British, it's made in Thailand. 😂
@@andrewkitchenuk let me guess, you ride Honda too and support the Japanese economy or maybe you ride German and support the German economy.
My GT has the GT bars R mid control combo along with the triumph shift assist, you may have seen it at the superbike factory workshop when you was walking through, so if you want to revisit the rocket with this combo your welcome to use mine 👍🏻
If you provide more details on GT accessories and options, that would be great
Definitely one of the finalists on my list of 2nd bikes, for around town....and the Diavel. Mmmmmmm
@Braylon Emanuel Instablaster =)
Hi there Motobob,
Any chance you could do a review on the legendary VMAX?! Someone has to do it justice :)
V max was love 😘
Another reviewer said the windscreen works best over 200 mph (322km/h). Your review is the first I've heard anyone say to move the pegs back... they're always "R or GT"... not GT and move pegs back.
i bought the 221 gt, removed the passenger backrest and the windshield, now its perfect for me. got the R look and the gt comfort.
Just curious as I'm having the same thoughts: did you get the R infills for the "indentations" in the fender or how did you solve it once the backrest was gone?
Loving the daily videos, wake up, grab a coffee, watch some motobob 😄😄
Well Done!! Enjoyed every minute of your review... informative and no wasted time . Keep up the good work!!
Beautiful bike but the tank capacity is too small - they needed to extended it below the seat to increase the range between fill ups
Yep, that's what I've thought since they announced it. Also could do with a reverse gear, not all of us are Arnold Schwarzenegger at his peak !
Best combination for me is my R with the handlebar from the GT. Best riding position in my opinion.
Nice review. Insightful stuff regarding a passenger as well as the mid pegs. Mid pegs definitely let you shift your weight more effectively.
Bob, I bought my GT in May 2021 with mid position pegs and a quick shifter, if you want to try it out let me know.
Single sided swing arm, shaft drive, safety electronics and that motor
I think you have the same idea as I have. The forward foot controls are just not comfortable nor confidence inspiring. One of the reasons I sold my Speedmaster and purchased a Speed Twin. Do you think one could change the forward foot controls for the mid controls without to much problem?
Definitely!
Kind offer - thanks mate! I may well take you up on that one day
Fantastic video! I would love to test ride one of these. Looks like a blast to ride.
Sure is mate!
Finally a proper put together review, thank you!
Great review… looking to part ex my triumph storm and was torn between R or GT
Awesome bike totally agree with u as a shorty the GT but with mid controls. I had a Kawasaki VulcanS a few years ago couldn’t get on with the forward controls just doesn’t seem a natural riding position to me. Great vlog as always Rob👍
I got the R much nicer riding position for me more aggressive. The GT felt like the old man's version I also like the rims on the R wasn't a fan of the GT wheels at all
Thanks AGAIN MotoBob for a great presentation of the R3- GT !! Your opinion on moving the rider foot-pegs is a good one ☝️ !
How much for it
Picked up MY21ROK on the 2/3/2021 (they were shut on the 1st), mid position pegs and quick shifter transforms what is already an epic machine, If you want to do a quick review on the subtle differences feel free to get in touch.
Love my Indian Chieftain but it is a tad bit too heavy at 800+ pounds. Considering selling it and buying the Rocket 3 GT. The looks of this thing are stunning and that single sided swingarm..... :)
Great 👍🏼 Review - I’ve had 2 Rocket 🚀 III Tourings since 2008 - Considering the GT - Prefer the Triple Black, but hard to find - how’s the horn? 😂
I bought one and you are right . I got mid pegs and quick shift . Very very nice bike .
Can you go into more details on how quick shift works on it? Was it a special option you had to specify when ordering it new?
Great bike, might trade my Bonneville for one now I know you can have different foot pegs, nice video by the way 👍👍👍
Cheers Pete!
Beautiful bike! Will be my next / final bike :-)
Hi, yes it does.
Great review. Excellent impressions and insights on riding that particular MC.
The lack of lean angle before scrapping puts me of this wonderful machine.
One guy request... you could show in future videos your seat positioning because some of us (me as well!) Are quite tall so it's always a thing to me I look for in any video.
Will keep it in mind 👍
@@motobob much appreciated man, also forget to tell your reviews are the best to me.. detailed without burning alot of time with high quality production,
Very nice work and keep going.
Again thanks alot for dedication.
Sound 'on throttle' 5:37 7:09
Sounds much better than a twin,
I'm surprised, I like the sound of an
inline 4 gsxr etc.. but this sounds really nice,
and again better than a twin imv.
I’d like the r with the footrests where they are on the gt. I don’t carry passengers so I don’t care for pillions or luggage racks.
HOWEVER, if someone gave me a gt I’d happily take it.
Great review Mr Bob. Hustling nicely through the twisties 👍
Cheers BZ!
You do the best reviews Moto Bob
another great video
you are right about the forward controls
and of course I will anger a lot of people here
100% of the time forward controls are all about form over function
it never makes sense to ride a motorcycle that way and I have no idea why people do
you have absolutely no control over that vehicle no matter how tall or short you are
you and I both know that
other people sit around and praise motorcycles like the Indian scout which is horrendously uncomfortable to ride for people of all sizes
but no one will admit that
mid controls on the GT version is genius
you and i are the same size
thanks for all you do
If you were 6'-4" and over 50, you'd understand forward controls just fine... :-)
@@blairtaylor9552 I'm 6'3" and love the forward controls! That and the standard cruise control and heated grips is why I chose the GT. Plus the milled wheels look better than the all black on the R.
