It might seem like that but there is a reason. You keep brushing, working it in and slowly adding water over and over. You want to get the later super slick with thick foam. That will provide the most hydration on your face giving you the best passes. Sure you can just start shaving once you have a layer of cream on your face but when you work it in with more water your brining out the highest potential in the lather plus is enjoyable to work it in and paint your face over and over.
The Latha line is one of the best values in wet shaving. Outstanding performance for a great price. The shaver looked great as well. My favorite safety razor is a GEM 1912 SE, and I have a few other vintage. Good call on the Barbicide. It's always better to be safe.
Got that right! I had a Long Comb but traded it awhile ago for the 1959 FatBoy I own. I later acquired the Short Comb from eBay and liked it a lot better
my merkur 34c I ordered, omega 10066 boar brush and some Astra blades finally came in along with some TOBS sandalwood shave cream. best shave and closest I've ever had, will never go back to cartridge junk again.
Italian Barber has a razorock version of the Gillette New Long Comb. Works as good as my vintage. The Gillette short comb which is the old comb is more aggressive. I love my New long comb and RR version mild but extremely efficient.
Victor, I believe razor emporium sells razors of this type, all professionally refurbished. I looked at their site the other day, and their prices seemed fairly reasonable, considering that they've cleaned vetted the razors for you.
good to see your take on this razor oddly enough, i broke mine out of storage a week ago and been enjoying it with great results finally i credit most of the improvement to the Perma-Sharp Supers you turned me on to :) they seem to work best in my aggressive razors with the Maggards MR5 handle the short comb always treated me better but these blades seem to have tamed my long comb beast to my eyes, the long comb is one of my best looking razor heads wish the blade tabs were less exposed though nose, earlobes, lips, a careless motion anywhere will do damage going to have to try my milder short comb again soon with the perma sharps same very exposed tabs though
I love the vintage OC razors a lot, I have 5 of them. They shave better than some of new high end OC ones. I have the heavy fat short handle I use with some and it makes them even better.
I'm using the shaving shack exotic sandalwood soap and guv'nor badger hair bush and i cant seem to create a thick lather? Any tips. You mention filling the soap and brush with water for several minutes prior to the shave?
Good to see you back Nick, congrats on the dog! I too love the Latha Lavanda for night shaves, pairs well with RazoRock King Louis. Fantastic post shave.
today i shaved for im first time with a DE razor...its amazing. I used a super cheap razor i got from ebay for a dollar and it came with a blade to. i picked up a can of barborsal atvthe store for another dollar. the whole internet is full of people saying you can get a good shave with cheap products. i cant afford anything more than what i have right now but it works even did a 3 pass shave to without a single cut of any sort
I do this also happens when you put a new and very sharp blade. I cut and did not even notice. The blade cuts like a knife through butter. The legendary razor looks beautiful and nice shave. Excellent. I also likes a vintage razors, they a awesome. Brush is actually performed very well. Fortunately, I rarely have a cuts, don't even have a pencil.
great video. Worth noting though that barbicide is a final stage sanitiser and not a cleaner. You have to thoroughly clean the razor of all dirt etc before sanitising in barbicide.
The NEW LC gets even better with one of those fat Maggard handles. I got the super heavy one for my cousin, and he said it was almost too aggressive for him but he adapted to it. You could probably try any handle you have laying around, because the NEW handle is incredibly light and hollow (which I believe is partially due to the Great Depression).
I read an ingrown hair prevention write up online and it said to only shave with the grain so that the hair is trained to grow only in that direction and only do one pass to minimize the risk of cutting the hair below the skin. Have you heard this?
Hey Nick Shave, I am somewhat of a starter with safety razors but i have a hard time getting a close shave with the mustache area. and I do 4 passes yet im still not as close as i need. I believe its the blades i am using. the darcos stp 300 with the micro touch razor
You should probably get some different blades. I recommend Perma-Sharp Super or Gillette Silver Blue. I have tried about 10 different DE razor blades and those two are probably my favorite so far and they are quite sharp. Dorco ST 300's have a very bad rep among wet shavers. Additionally, the Micro Touch One is a mild razor which makes it harder to get a close shave with.
hey just wanted to let you know your videos are great and super informative. and you got me switched to safety razors and its great keep up the good work.
Actualy I have SUPER SPEEDS from the 40s 50s and 60s. Now some ppl may not agree with me but my 1951 40s style Black tip is the smoothest shave Iv'e ever had bar none. It floored me cuz I thought it would be to mild, it is mild, but very, very efficient!!

And Nick, I figured out how to lather Williams Mug Soap. I agree it's a very difficult soap to lather, but there's a trick to it: instead of soaking the brush and soap separately, you have to pre-soak both the soap and the brush in the same mug! Also, you need to add glycerin to the lather, and it should work! Hope this helps!
Very nice man. i've got B&M's Latha Limon and i recently bought the Le Petit Chypre and the Latha Lavanda is next on my list as well. i love my RazoRock plissoft brush. i've had it for 10 days now and have only lost 2 hairs out of it since i've gotten it and i recently started using RazoRock's preshave gel which is incredible.
I have a Merkur 15c that is so non aggressive that I sometimes wonder if there is even a blade in it!! It takes about 3 passess, the last only with water, that I get a decent shave with it. I like the design but it could be a bit more aggressive.
I only wish I could shave. I have tried EVERY razor, cream and Gizmo and Everytime no matter what or how my neck breaks out and feels like it's on fire and around my mouth too. And it goes on for days. To the point I started using electric whal mini clippers and leaving a close stubble...no burning or break outs since. Im envious of you because I used to love the routine of personal grooming.
J. Kirby It could be that you’re simply pressing too hard on your skin with the razor. Just let the weight of the razor do the cutting. Use plenty lather and take your time applying it. I find scratching it right after that helps to work the lather in better. Go slowly and always start by following the direction of growth. Different parts of the face grow in different directions. Stroke your face when you have growth and the smoothest direction is the cutting direction. Second pass, if you want to, is across the grain. Try to avoid cutting against the grain if you have sensitive skin.
Hi Nick, Razor Emporium recommends putting them in the dishwasher. I usually clean my vintages with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol as well. I have that same razor--nice shave!! Cool Dog
Nice razor. They are 'efficient' :) Have you ever used Gillette Minora blades? We have them available in south Africa. They come from St. Petersburg and I find them pretty sharp and smooth.
i think i heard you say you reuse the barbicide? I was like.. wait did he say that..? if so what hell is the point of trying to be sanitary if you're going to reuse it and put it back in the bottle??!! lol its like no you need to throw that away! Also you can dilute the mixture some with water and it will still be enough to kill hiv/bacteria but please after use throw it out and don't put it back in the bottle. I know that like you said the risk for infection is minimal but for others who may not know that's improper sanitation.
Some chemicals reach maximum efficiency when diluted. For example, ethanol, used for killing bacteria, is most effective when at a 70% concentration (30% H2O). This is because pure EtOH coagulates proteins immediately. This prevent the alcohol from progressing very far beyond the cell wall of the bacterium. However, 70% slows down the coagulation of the proteins so the ethanol can penetrate all the way through the cell. So, dilute that stuff and toss it after use. How valuable is your health?
I just bought one of these off of ebay last night and was considering sending it off to get professionally electroplated. After seeing how yours looks I am now on the fence between the plating or just spending the effort to keep it polished. Definitely a cool looking razor when polished.
Hey Nick, I'm a new subscriber and pretty new to wet shaving (only about a month in) and I wondered if you ever considered doing advice videos on specific questions viewers put in? I'm having a persistent problem with an area on my neck just on the right-hand side which I always get irritation and burn on and I can't seem to get a close shave there either. Any tips on problem areas, especially around the neck? Thanks so much for all your videos, they're a huge help and great fun too! Joe
I bought a merkur 38C (expensive lol ! )..after seeing all the reviews and that. it is great for shaving, but i bought it to edge my beard lines on the cheeks and neck....i shaved with my normal gillette shaving cream, and i don,t know why but it either slips/slides uncontrollably or it feels sticky... should i use a shaving soap for safety razor is it different technique to a normal gillette fusion proglide razor.
Great to see a video from you again Nick! You're the best you tube channel which says a lot. I have a side question unrelated to this video: can you give your opinion and contrast between the Semogue 830 and 1250? I have the 1250 and like it but it seems the 830 might be better??
I also have a New Long comb & it gives a great shave. Barbasol is kinda pricey. Scrubbing Bubbles is also an effective Anti Bacterial cleaner, plus, after you spray down your razor, then scrub it with a toothbrush, you can use the rest with a sponge or rag to wipe out all the soap scum in your sink.
He Nick! Great videos... I like the reviews that you do. May be you can explain a bit more about the ingredients of each soap. (its purposes). Also, how about a review for The Art of Shaving products. I believe they are over price but you seem to know a bit about chemistry and may be can talk about it. :-). Hope to see you soon. take care.
Are these safety razor good for shaving body hair? My long body hair gets stuck between the blades when using regular razors. Would safety razors remedy this since they only have one blade?
You're supposed to use a tiny amount of barbacide and dilute it. It's something like 2oz barbacide to 16oz water if I remember correctly and replace the water after a days worth of use for barbers. Using straight barbacide is super overkill!
The Fusion Pro Glide Power is the best. The blades are expensive , but NICE shave and with some of the creams/soaps mentioned in these videos it is a wonderful experience.
I have the short comb version of this razor, which I use exclusively. I did not use the barbicide, but knew the previous owner--my mother! She used it to shave her legs. It has been in the family since 1925. You can find the date of manufacture from the serial number stamped on the flat platen which the blade contacts. Serial numbers are available on Badger & Blade (badgerandblade.com)
You guys are lucky living in the states cause you have tons of razors on sale on ebay, i have to pay a lot for the shipping and most cases the import charges :-( That can turn out real expensive. Great vids btw, you have been my go to guy when it come to de shaving.
I use the same safety razor very often, and Personna was the best match for mine too. Every time I try a new one, I just slowly end up coming back to this one. I have a question, do you ever hand strop your safety razor blades? I found just a few swipes on either side for both sides really seems to cut out snagging of beard hairs. I learned it from someone else on youtube. It makes feather blades super smooth. Also, is it really safe to use alum anymore? Can the aluminum get in your blood? Ever since I heard that Alzheimer patients tended to have more aluminum ions in their brains and that it may help lead to the disease, I have avoided aluminum based baking powder and aluminum based anti-antiperspirants, I do use deodorants though, just none with aluminum in them. I'm gonna stop drinking coke from cans, I just got used to doing it again, but I'm asking this of you as a Doctor, can alum and alum based products get into the blood stream from shaving products? If so, is it dangerous? I know it seems like a stupid question, look how many people used these products their whole lives and they seemed okay, but maybe not as many did use them. I know smokers who light up and almost just use their cigarettes as incense sticks instead of breathing them in. That could be how some smokers never get complications from smoking. Anyway, thanks for a cool video, I plan to check out the brush and soap on amazon. May you be blessed, man, and have a great day.
New sub here Nick, Great videos! Do you recommend any tube shaving creams for someone new to traditional wet shaving? I made a huge mistake and bought some Cremo Cream not realizing it's not meant to be lathered with a brush..
I've tried Cremo, and like it for superlathering. There are some great creams out there. Speick is one of my personal favorites, and many people enjoy Proraso. If you venture outside tube creams, there are a lot that come in a tub that are great performers, though some are on the pricey side. Have you ever considered using soap? The Latha line really is exceptional, and easy to get great lather off of.
+Eric Sorrentino I actually have been using Cella (technically a croap haha)for the past 10-11 shaves and absolutely love it. I'm still sloppy at building lather in a bowl, but have face lathering down really well. I wanted to try a cream because it looks like it'll be easy to bowl lather and want to get it down before I venture to straight razors. I'll check out some of your recommendations!!!
Great video Nick. Just wondering, for someone new to wet shaving would you recommend the plissoft brush used in the review? Or is something like the semogue 620 a better buy?
i put my vintage razors in boiling water when i get them and let the rolling boil agitate the razor which helps to loosen anything unwanted then clean with a toothbrush and soap,
I'm such a germaphobe that I even disinfect brand new razors with 70% isopropyl alcohol for 10 minutes and then Barbicide for 10 minutes. You can never be sure that the razors weren't returned, or know how they were handled at the factory.
Lol typo xD. But in all seriousness, plenty of people shave their nether region with a DE. Just be sure to stretch the skin and go slow. My only concern would be shaving the jewels. But people do that as well. Hair removal cream works wonders on the bald bags.
Like your videos! My daily shave:Gillette LC NEWRazoRock Plissoft BrushVintage Wilkinson Super Sword BladeBarrister and Mann SoapWitch HazelUnrefined Shea ButterDoesn't get any better for me.
I am sure thats a good way to clean it up, but I would recommend some sort of chemical sterilization to make sure you get everything. To clean with water and heat and pressure, metal really needs to be auto-claved

Great video, Nick. Just wanted to let you know that I got into wet shaving because of you. My face has never felt better! Keep up the great videos!
The NEW, long or short comb, is one of Gillette's best ever.
Come back and do a shave my dude!!!
Italian Barber has a razorock version of the Gillette New Long Comb. Works as good as my vintage. The Gillette short comb which is the old comb is more aggressive. I love my New long comb and RR version mild but extremely efficient.
Congrats on the vintage razor. I just picked up a 1918 Military Gillette the other day, and I'm amazed at how well it shaves.
Where did you purchase it from , Patrick?
I found it in a local antique shop in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.
Thank you.
Victor, I believe razor emporium sells razors of this type, all professionally refurbished. I looked at their site the other day, and their prices seemed fairly reasonable, considering that they've cleaned vetted the razors for you.
Thank you for the information , have a nice day.
Never thought about turning the shave soap upside down to let any excess water out . Cool idea, thanks!
Seems to work well for me, it prevents some evaporation, but it really helps get the puck dry
nice to see you again sir , hope your studies are going well . - kindest regards Mark .
I just bought a long comb a few weeks ago, it's a great razor! Mine happens to be an Otto Roth that was restamped with the Gillette logo.
good to see your take on this razor
oddly enough, i broke mine out of storage a week ago and been enjoying it with great results finally
i credit most of the improvement to the Perma-Sharp Supers you turned me on to :)
they seem to work best in my aggressive razors with the Maggards MR5 handle
the short comb always treated me better but these blades seem to have tamed my long comb beast
to my eyes, the long comb is one of my best looking razor heads
wish the blade tabs were less exposed though
nose, earlobes, lips, a careless motion anywhere will do damage
going to have to try my milder short comb again soon with the perma sharps
same very exposed tabs though
the mirror is so clear I thought it was accually u
Bob Bob right? Dude has to share his mirror cleaning secrets!
Just sent in my primary application for medical school! It's a long and expensive road ahead, but I'm excited!
Congrats! It is indeed a long road (and pricey) but its worth it
Nice Razor Nick! You gotta love the way synthetic brushes have come along as well. Cheap but great performance!!
I love the vintage OC razors a lot, I have 5 of them. They shave better than some of new high end OC ones. I have the heavy fat short handle I use with some and it makes them even better.
When are you going to use your straight razor again Nick?
I'm using the shaving shack exotic sandalwood soap and guv'nor badger hair bush and i cant seem to create a thick lather? Any tips. You mention filling the soap and brush with water for several minutes prior to the shave?
I have to agree with you. Latha Oceana might be my favorite shaving soap - both because of the performance and the scent.
Awesome shaves! All of your shave videos are excellent.
Great video.
What is the difference in shaves with a long vs short open comb
I do this also happens when you put a new and very sharp blade. I cut and did not even notice. The blade cuts like a knife through butter. The legendary razor looks beautiful and nice shave. great video.
Just don't use the heavier handle to shave your nostrils. 😜
I read an ingrown hair prevention write up online and it said to only shave with the grain so that the hair is trained to grow only in that direction and only do one pass to minimize the risk of cutting the hair below the skin. Have you heard this?

You should probably get some different blades. I recommend Perma-Sharp Super or Gillette Silver Blue. I have tried about 10 different DE razor blades and those two are probably my favorite so far and they are quite sharp.
Dorco ST 300's have a very bad rep among wet shavers.
Additionally, the Micro Touch One is a mild razor which makes it harder to get a close shave with.
The Plisson was one of my first brushes, and I've used it for about a year now, and I'll use it until the last fiber comes out
The Plisson knots are amazing, really superior to natural hair in every aspect.
Plisson is my absolute favorite as well.
hey just wanted to let you know your videos are great and super informative. and you got me switched to safety razors and its great keep up the good work.
You would like a 1960's Gillette SuperSpeed Flaretip. They are honestly the most comfortable shavers out there
Actualy I have SUPER SPEEDS from the 40s 50s and 60s. Now some ppl may not agree with me but my 1951 40s style Black tip is the smoothest shave Iv'e ever had bar none. It floored me cuz I thought it would be to mild, it is mild, but very, very efficient!!

I have that same razor and my opinion I think open comb razors give closer shaves over straight bar razors like my Merkur 38c. Thanks for sharing

Thanks man! I will have more videos up soon
fantastic shave glad to see you back at the videos i havent seen you in a while glad your doing well
I did the nose nick twice in the same shave once. Only happened once in my life though, learned my lesson!
Razor Emporium recommends Flitz Metal Polish. It works very nicely.

Where'd you get the razor framed pics? I love them and thought my brother would like them
Good to see another shave Nick. Great looking razor and the B&M Latha looks really good. Jefferson looks amazing! What kind of dog is he?
Hi Nick, Razor Emporium recommends putting them in the dishwasher. I usually clean my vintages with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol as well.
I have that same razor--nice shave!! Cool Dog
Nice razor. They are 'efficient' :) Have you ever used Gillette Minora blades? We have them available in south Africa. They come from St. Petersburg and I find them pretty sharp and smooth.

that's the same ratio.
It is the same ratio, but less fluids being used, thats why he said if you're cheap, as in not wanting to waste fluid.
He's a surgeon. Bet he knows a bit about sanitation.
I just bought one of these off of ebay last night and was considering sending it off to get professionally electroplated. After seeing how yours looks I am now on the fence between the plating or just spending the effort to keep it polished. Definitely a cool looking razor when polished.

Hello thanks. Hey I would really like to know what breed is Jefferson. I will certainly appreciate your response.
"Wow! Holy cow.. that burns..." so funny bro :D because I know that feeling very good :-)
I like your videos, keep going
I bought a merkur 38C (expensive lol ! )..after seeing all the reviews and that. it is great for shaving, but i bought it to edge my beard lines on the cheeks and neck....i shaved with my normal gillette shaving cream, and i don,t know why but it either slips/slides uncontrollably or it feels sticky... should i use a shaving soap for safety razor is it different technique to a normal gillette fusion proglide razor.
I recently acquired a Gillette “NEW” LongComb in a trade I really like the baseplate design
I always use barbicide with second hand razors I've bought, also if I'm loaning out a razor or selling one.
Have you used the Latha Sandalwood? Awesome scent!
Great to see a video from you again Nick! You're the best you tube channel which says a lot. I have a side question unrelated to this video: can you give your opinion and contrast between the Semogue 830 and 1250? I have the 1250 and like it but it seems the 830 might be better??
Nothing more cute than a fluffy doodle bear 😍😍😍
how did you polish that safety razor. I just bought a 1930 Gillette off ebay to and it needs to be polished up as well.
+Harleyhunter1sf I put a link in the video description for the stuff I used, it worked great
You need to review dreadnought shaving cream called bluebeards here in the uk
Missed you fam!!!
I just got this Razor on eBay. I think I need more practice though. My first shave was rough on the neck area.
I have the Rockwell 6s is this shaper ?
He Nick! Great videos... I like the reviews that you do. May be you can explain a bit more about the ingredients of each soap. (its purposes). Are these safety razor good for shaving body hair? My long body hair gets stuck between the blades when using regular razors. Would safety razors remedy this since they only have one blade?
Hi nick how are you nick can I strealize my vintage safety razor in alcohol to kill what ever bacteria is on it.
The way you film is so trippy
That lather is good for like 42 passes.
You have done sooooo many soap reviews, you should rank your soaps. Which ones are your best ones?
You're supposed to use a tiny amount of barbacide and dilute it. It's something like 2oz barbacide to 16oz water if I remember correctly and replace the water after a days worth of use for barbers. Using straight barbacide is super overkill!
Silly question but can you do one on shaving chest? Like what's the best razor for that....
Gillette body razor for men is the best
The Fusion Pro Glide Power is the best. The blades are expensive , but NICE shave and with some of the creams/soaps mentioned in these videos it is a wonderful experience.
Great video. I had a New Short Comb. Loved the way it looked but I always got nicks. Sold it. Sad day.
Which polish did you use
I have been shaving with a safety razor for 38 years, and there is nothing safe about them just a learning curve.
this guy takes shaving seriously
gonna drag a sharpened piece of steel across your face, might as well take the time-to make it an effective exercise.
Yeah, but still...lol
I'll check out some of your recommendations!!!
what is the point of brushing cream so long ...? I just put canned foam on and shave. Thanks for answer :)
Lovely looking razor.
Great video Nick. Just wondering, for someone new to wet shaving would you recommend the plissoft brush used in the review? Or is something like the semogue 620 a better buy?
Go with the Plissoft! It will give you a great experience, and you don't have to worry about breaking it in
I want some blade reviews.
Hey, Doc, with the way that your nose got bitten, it appears that an open comb razor may require a bit more caution.
Lowkey ASMR lol
Good job Nick
I did the same thing cutting my nose a few weeks ago. Quite a bleeder.
Nick you have very strong wrist bro. I'm not gona ask how you got them that strong but you make a sweet lather every time lol.
He's a surgeon - I want him to have really good wrists !!
I use antibacterial soap to clean my ebay razors because I dont have anything else, that should be enough right?
Thats a good start, but you also need some anti-virucidal properties (to cover HIV, hepatitis, etc...)
+nick shaves oh God now I'm scared lol alcohol?
+mxm190 alcohol or boiling them will do the job.
Are you a PA? if so how do you like it ?
I am an MD, Orthopedic Surgeon. I love it! great profession, I am still in my residency so my hours are still very high
That would have been my second guess. Very cool.
what's the purpose of the combs?
Venessa Colmenares you can shave with it and also when not shaving just use it to comb your beard
parmar gurdeep lol.
Have you ever considered doing a ASMR type of shaving video? I know it isnt the focus of your chanel but I feel it would do well.
Subscribed!
i put my vintage razors in boiling water when i get them and let the rolling boil agitate the razor which helps to loosen anything unwanted then clean with a toothbrush and soap,
I'm such a germaphobe that I even disinfect brand new razors with 70% isopropyl alcohol for 10 minutes and then Barbicide for 10 minutes. You can never be sure that the razors weren't returned, or know how they were handled at the factory.
I don’t even know why I’m watching this, I have a beard lol.
how long must it take him to shave his balls? xD
Mark.S 7 i think he waxes the pubic hairs
Faroek Nasierkhan how about the private hairs?
Lol typo xD.
But in all seriousness, plenty of people shave their nether region with a DE. Just be sure to stretch the skin and go slow. My only concern would be shaving the jewels. But people do that as well. Hair removal cream works wonders on the bald bags.
thanks to you am thinking of him brushing his balls till its hard and irritated
Mark.S 7 I used a stubble trimmer on my flacid scrotum and I got a such slit on my shaft. felt like I cut a hot dog in half down the middle
Yeah one of those styptic pencils and a cut their will definitely,,,,, bring a tear to your eye the way it stings ,,,that's for sure !!!
what dog breed is that

I have completely moved over to the synthetic plissoft/maggards brushes. Their just too good for the money.
Another option for cleaning and sterilization is to put it in the dishwasher. Got this from Razer Emporium.
I am sure thats a good way to clean it up, but I would recommend some sort of chemical sterilization to make sure you get everything. To clean with water and heat and pressure, metal really needs to be auto-claved
Very good point.
