    Great review Ken! My emotions are quite mixed up about this razor. I was quite excited when I first heard about Gillette selling a DE razor. However, Gillette has given up the DE razor market ages ago and tried to force-feed the market with garbage, leaving a few nostalgic, traditional companies to continue producing wet shaving products. Now that people are going back to wet shaving, for whatever reason, and the market has grown quite a lot, Gillette decided to make a come back. On top of it all though, for this come-back, they are not using any of their own design products, but someone else's. They could at least come back with a new version of, say, The Aristocrat. But noooooo! They only want to make easy money without caring for the product they sell or their consumers. Call me excessively romantic, but as a matter of principle, I would not spend a dime on this particular product. It has no character. If someone ever sends it to me as a gift, I may try it...

      I agree they used their parent company conglomerate mega corporation P&G to push the garbage cartridges razors and essentially push DE’s down to a niche and now out of no where they bring it back? They deserve to be boycotted

    Ken, your videos never get old. Shaving videos and gear are not time sensitive, they are a joy to view and take us back in time to another area. Yet, as wet shavers we can take ourselves back in time to a degree and bring the past to the present to some degree. Including the look, feel, ambience, experience and scents. DE shaving gear is also a collecting hobby that remain affordable. At least not as expensive as collecting and storing fine cars of the past. Anyway, thanks to Ken for keeping us entertained with more fine videos.

      I’ve been using de for about a year, Nick, and love it. A few words of advice, if they’re not unwanted. Don’t skimp on your brushes. When I started out, I bought a cheap brush, wasn’t happy with it, bought one slightly better, then another, all trying to just save money. I finally broke down and bought a Simpson’s Berkeley, and love it. All the money spent on cheap brushes was wasted. I’m saving up now to get a Simpson’s chubby two. Just want another to rotate them out, there’s nothing wrong with the Berkeley. Silver tip badger is the way to go.

    Great shave. After watching this review, sounds like I should add this new Gillette DE razor to my wishlist. I also would like to see Gillette actually stock it up in local stores so I would buy it and bring it home right away rather than wait for days or even weeks for it to arrive. Have a great day

      Mantic59's article "The New Gillette Heritage Double Edge Razor" says that Gillette will not be extending the availability of the razor beyond Amazon. Since safety razor sales are only a small percentage of overall shaving supplies, a Gillette safety razor probably won't see the shelves of any local stores anytime soon. If you're new to wet-shaving, an adjustable safety razor (like a Parker 'Variant' or Rockwell 6C) is a much better option, since it allows for as mild or aggressive a shave as you need (based on skill or beard growth), unlike most safety razors.

      Received mine today. The head "looks" almost exactly like my Edwin Jagger. The only difference I can see is that there is no 4 on the EJ. The safety bar, on both, weighs 18 grams. There is a 1 gram difference in the cap; Gillette is slightly heavier. This information, and $1.00, will get you a cup of coffee at McDonald's! Don't forget the dollar. I'd be excited if they just brought back something easier for them to make like the vintage open comb techs. I guess, I'd just be happy if this encourages them to USA produce any razor from their DE line. It'd be great to have another chance to buy them brand new! Great video, Ken!

If you have a Muhle R89 take the heads and weigh them and measure them, they are identical. Just the handle differs. I hope I didn't turn you off towards the Heritage razor.

    I think Proctor & Gamble “Gillette” releasing a DE razor actually makes the hobby less cool. One of the things I enjoyed about DE shaving was using obscure foreign brands and artisan products, in contrast to buying some Gillette mass market corporate crud from the supermarket. This is like Budweiser releasing a craft beer. Gillette and it’s market power are the problem not the solution. If they get involved they will damage all the interesting existing players while adding nothing new. They are just marketing dweebs whose real loyalty will always be with higher margin disposables unlike the DE specialist companies.

      Spot on. They made great old razors and we've all got them. Why have a new version when they ignored us and still do. Going to kill the boutique market and used market. Plus, you trade in your man card and bow to the "toxic masculinity woke" company.

    • @haterskeephatin101
      @haterskeephatin101 2 роки тому

      Gillette creates the demand and you don't even realize they are doing it. They helped hype the wet shaving market back up with art of shaving stores (and now these razors) years after the wet shaving scene was made obsolete with cardridge razors. If Budweiser invented craft beer and started making craft again for their own amusement. If anything this is like Starbucks making their new reserve stores where you can still get proper coffee. You see because Starbucks created craft coffee in America, destroyed it, and helped bring it back into popularity.

    Great video Ken! I’ve owned this razor for about a month, I’ve shaved my face, neck, head & ears with it. Here’s my take on it:
    Typical compact mild shaver, but the case makes it a great travel razor.
    Comes with a good grippy handle, nice & maneuverable, the low profile head is great for detail work, ears, edging goatees & mustaches, shaving “other parts”, etc.
    One really cool thing I’ve discovered, is I own many German-made razors and I’ve compared the cap & plate to my Merkur & Muhle 3-piece razors, and I literally can not tell a visual difference between the profile, cap, drain slots, plate & threads of the Muhle R89 and the Gillette Heritage head.
    The Muhle R89 cap & plate thread right onto the Heritage handle and looks identical, as in zero difference found whatsoever.
    So, what I’m saying is, if the cap and/or plate break, the Muhle closed-comb replacement cap & plate will look & function identical, which makes this a great razor, IMO.
    I think this is a great choice for a high value, versatile razor for beginners & pros for home or travel.

    Glad to see your experience was much better than mine with the new razor.
    I used mine with the blades it came with (very familiar and a favorite of mine) and man oh man let me tell you what. It felt like my first time with a shavette! It was bad. My assumption is I had a rouge blade in the pack. So I will try again later with a different blade and reserve my judgement.

      It's probably not likely that Gillette will ever produce a consumer priced safety razor made in the US. There are various US-made safety razor options: Timeless, Blacklands, Above The Tie, Charcoal Goods and others, but these are premium safety razors.

    I asked for one for Christmas; we'll see how that goes. I, too, would like to see it released in a store -- Walgreens, Target, etc. I'm thrilled that they released it and hope (like everyone else) they continue to do so. Maybe they'll do one every Holiday season? Like you said, with the presentation it would be like a gift and Gillette has a history of doing special Holiday razors. I'm sure that, if there were enough numbers, they'd continue to create products. After all, they were losing sales from a lot of men and women who no longer bought their cartridge razors. This is a way to recapture some of that loss. And if the out of stock was any indication, I'm sure they're going to look long and hard at those numbers to see just how much of that money they can recapture.
    Thanks for a great video, Ken. As always, top notch and so real. Have a good weekend!

    I shaved with mine for the first time today. The head looks exactly like my DE89 but it is slightly smaller. It is not as wide. This allowed it to get under my nose a lot more easily than my DE89; although not as good as my vintage SuperSpeed. Also, the head is lighter than the DE89. Overall, I liked it and found it about the same aggressiveness as the DE 89 but a bit easier to use as it is more manueverable.

    My experience with this razor is very different. The marking underneath the Cap is a 9 in my Gillette Heritage Razor. There is a sizable gap between the Cap ( upper cap) and the End Cap. The contact points (as seen from side view) don’t touch one another making for a large gap between upper cap and end cap. When the blade is inserted in the cap and handle is screwed in as required the blade moves around a lot when the razor is shaken and you can clearly hear a very audible razor blade noise. The razor is so aggressive that I knew immediately this production unit was defective. I’m sending it back to Amazon where I purchased it online.
    I’ll have to purchase a new one either from Amazon again or from another online vendor.

    Great video. Sorry, as I am a latecomer to you site. My Dad used a Gillette & Wilkinson Sword double blade razors when I was a kid & I followed suit when it was time for me to shave. I subsequently started using disposable razors. Recently someone gave me a Lord Double edged safety razor so I started trying to use that again, but noticed I got a lot of cuts from it. I assumed it was because it was a cheap razor, as I'd never experienced cuts ever before with the old razors or the disposables. I would still like to keep using the double edged "old skool" safety razor & am looking to buy a new one. The King C looks great & Im tempted to get one. I was wondering which brand you would recommend over the other brand: Gillette or Wilkinson Sword? Both brands are benchmarks & set the standard when it comes to shaving, but which one would you recommend over the other. I must say, its a great pity you got no response from Gillette regarding your emails. It really is a no brainer that if you have a customer contacting you & engaging you about your product it demonstrates customer loyalty & is one of the simplest forms of marketing & brand loyalty strategies to react to. Anyway, I guess youre dealing with big corporations. Any advice would be much appreciated! Cheers!

    The head of the machine is absolutely identical to the one from the Muhle R89, and the handle does not seem to be who knows what. Muhle R89 is a nice device with an average aggression or a little above average, for me it is almost perfect and I have a few devices. I do not know what is special about this device, but the R89 is a new device that looks and works very well, not the idea of a new head and an old handle, or something.

    • @borbetomagus
      @borbetomagus 5 років тому +2

      @@sheshaveswithjill4838 The razor head is said to have been a joint collaboration between Edwin Jagger and Mühle.
      I haven't read all of the details, but this is a conversation with Neil Jagger --
      sharprazorpalace.com/content/conversation-neil-jagger-440/
      Given it was made in Germany, it would seem most likely that it was manufactured by Mühle. It's too bad that Gillette couldn't simply retool one of their three piece safety razors (Double Ring Old Style (1904-1906), Old Style (1906-1929), New Improved (1921-1928), New (1929-1941), Good Will (1931-1935), or Tech (1939-1973)), instead of re-branding a modern (instead of vintage) design. Undoubtedly a financial decision as they're probably only testing consumer interest at this point, but it will be interesting to see how far Gillette is willing to go with this safety razor venture. I just hope they bring back (or improve, given the current options) one of their adjustable safety razor designs.
