When trying to find a channel to learn about lighting up my videos, YOUR channel was the first to explain it perfectly!
Thanks 320! 🙏🏻 what other type of content would you like to see here on the channel this year? I value your input!
I appreciate that you go out of your way to tell people who are just starting out or only doing this kind of stuff casually/for fun to NOT splurge on the newest high-end stuff.
I have been doing this full time professionally for over 6 years and don’t splurge on the highest stuff haha, it’s not needed!
@@benjohnsoncreative Exactly. It's all about how you use the tools you're given. I mean, that's how UA-cam came to be, anyway! Just average people pointing and shooting with whatever they had!

Great video Ben! I never get tired of your videos about lighting, and I've been liking the focus on different budgets. Can't wait until you hit 100k subs!
Thanks Christian! Always appreciate the encouragement! 🙏🏻 glad you are enjoying the videos!
The mountdog light looks like a super great light for beginners. My favorite light combo: Godox UL 150 with a Laofas D90B softbox... It made lighting so easy for me. I spent way too much time trying to make cheaper lights work, but now it is so easy. And having a good light makes color grading and getting good skintones a breeze.
Yes having a great light definitely helps with color quality!
One of the best budget conscious review out there, thanks Ben.
Glad it was helpful!
Still killing it man. Great video, and lots of incredible information.
Thanks Inter!
I bought the GVM because of you Ben. Thanks man!
The GVM light is awesome I still use it all the time for livestream and thumbnails especially :)
Ben, Thanks so much for the information! You really helped me with my fear of lighting!

Man, your videos are awesome! Learning a lot with each one. What do you think of the Dazzne D50, if you have seen it?
I haven’t tried it!
Thanks, Ben! I subscribed and just ordered a lighting kit (not $50 anymore though lol). I don't make youtube videos but I need some new lights for taking photos for my blog.
The prices will fluctuate, still a solid deal for what you get tho!
@@benjohnsoncreative Yep! Can’t wait to try them out when they arrive tomorrow😊
i bought the Raleno Led Video Light because of this youtube video, i haven't received it as yet from Amazon i can't wait
Amazing!

Thanks for watching!
Great video. Do you think the Fotodioz Flapjack is good for unboxing videos where you only film the product on a table. Appreciate your insights.
Yep!
I liked the 0$ to 500$ series
Thanks Midilaj!
Fantastic video! I am so glad you mentioned the GVM 100K Kit, Does anyone have experience with this. I was looking at Neewer Lights but this one tops those ones slightly.
Here’s my full video on it: ua-cam.com/video/1KempxwpwFk/v-deo.html
@@benjohnsoncreative thanks!
Hey Ben, what stand do you use for the flapjacks?
Can the Vijim desk light be mounted on a regular soft box light stand?
What do you suggest I use for tabletop how-to videos? I want something that won't take up too much room and will make my videos look awesome. Thanks for your help. Keep up the great work.
You could try the mountdog soft box
Reality is, for doing flat lay style shots I really prefer to use large soft boxes
They will give you the best look
Larger light sources = softer light
It’s a convenience trade off but worth it if possible
@@benjohnsoncreative Ok cool. I also watched your review on the GVM 100w light. I think you said that light was better than the mountdog. I don’t mind spending the extra money if it’s going to make a difference. I think I’ll go with the GVM 100w unless you know of a better one in the same price range. Thanks again for all of your help.
Helpful video buddy !! May I know the dimensions of your studio room ?
Since a lot of lights can be controlled by an app now. I find it handy to buy from one brand so I only have to use one app for all lighting settings. I found godox had the best price to performance for me. I use a sl30bi and 2*tl30. For my 2m*2m home studio, the dl30bi has a very convenient small softbox/dome. For bigger needs I rent, dont have spare space for storage 😂😅
I love godox lights but there app is not the best 😅 pros and cons to each brand!
@@benjohnsoncreative true that, not one cracked the code of an optimal solution just for me 🤣 keeps us busy though 😁
If a company brings out a range of products that can be controlled by browser interface and can interface with automation like home assistant.. I would order if the price wasn't overhyped.
Untill then... It works, and works better than 30 years ago when I started. The things I can do at home now... Ridiculous 😁👍
A big advantage is that when an "expensive" piece of gear hits the market I think back at the time I spent 35k on a specialized pci card that could handle 2x ide av 1.7gb harddisks. For a whopping 5 minutes of sd footage 😁
Great video!! Thanks for sharing!! Which size is your Fotodiox? Cheers
I have the 18 inch!
Hey @Ben Johnson
I was wondering if you could make a video on how to color correct/color grade in post-production; maybe share a few tips and tell us beginners what apps/software is best to use! Maybe you already have a video on it, maybe you're too busy, but if you read this...please consider making that video! :) Please and thank you.
Here you go Aidan! ua-cam.com/video/cljkygq8GKE/v-deo.html
@@benjohnsoncreative Thanks! (btw, I love your content. You deserve more subs, but you already have mine! :)
What is a good light for gym posing video’s? To make your muscles pop more
I love your videos Ben! They are so helpful. I would love to know what lights would you recommend to shoot dance videos. I would like to buy some lights that are versatile to film, for instance lights that have RGB flood and spot light :) Thank you!!
These are a good choice: ua-cam.com/video/kojL62WGNbg/v-deo.html
@@benjohnsoncreative Thank you so much!!!
Hi there. I bought a neewer flapjack but it's abit too harsh even at 1%. Could you recommend a soft box to diffuse it?
You can use the diffuser from a five in one reflector: amzn.to/3GMigpY
Or even a bed sheet as I show here: ua-cam.com/video/ETnctiaQHIc/v-deo.html
Or shine it away from you so it bounces back onto you
Hi Ben...this year I have decided to work on my lighting and audio. While I don't want to break the bank I do want to invest in better quality items that will work for a long time...that being said if you have an ok budget would you first focus on audio or lighting if you could only do one thing at a time.
Personally, i would focus on audio first!
Nice ☺️👍
Appreciate it!
Is there a decent softbox around the $200 range? The only ones on here were either $50 or $300 which is quite a big gap lol
Is Better Amaran 100D or neewer fs150b?
when my light is ony is shadows the honycomb pattern as a light. what am I doing wrong? (amaran 60 x with light dome mini se)
Question, can you do a comparison video with the fotodiox flapjack vs neewer flapjack?
Fotodiox is brighter and heavier but more expensive, that’s about the only difference
Hey Ben, is there lighting that can be used for both youtube videos as well as taking pictures of products to sell?
Hey Anna! Pretty much any of these would work great for both video and product photos. I’ve used a lot of them for both of those things
I love your videos and just subscribed. I’m wondering if you have any advice for shooting in a home dance studio with some eastern facing natural light? I practice in late afternoon, early evening (sometimes late at night). I built an 8 ft x 8 ft sprung dance floor (bamboo) and have mirrors on one wall that are 12 feet long (7ft high).
I’d like to be able to play with mood, but color not as much as keeping it bright and flattering.
I was thinking $300 tops for this. If anyone else has any advice, I’d appreciate it as well. Thank you. Sorry for asking for free advice here...I do value your videos. 🙏🏼
I’d recommend this light for a big space: ua-cam.com/video/1KempxwpwFk/v-deo.html
I just got the Godox SL 60. What’s a good softbox to get for UA-cam videos?
I’d get godox’s soft box because there mount system only works with there stuff I believe
So I am filming in a smaller room... I shoot with neewer 660 lights with softbox . My room is 2.3metres wide. Would it be worth buying the flapjacks C-700RSV. Love your vids and big up the bald Cafe video
The flapjacks are great! They are definitely smaller and are very powerful. They do a great job!
Hey, Ben! I've been binging all of your videos for like a week now.
I want to shoot guitar covers at home but I could just barely afford the Viltrox L116T.
I'm thinking about buying one and using it as a rim light, getting a 5in1 reflector and trying to get creative with either my desk lamp or my phone light for the hair light.
Do you think I'd be able to get a decent quality vid with these three, do you have any advice about maybe changing the purpose of the few lights I got?
Thanks for all the helpful vids!!!
If you get a 5 in 1 reflector you can take the cover off and use the diffuser with your desk lamp as a key light, that should help a bit!
@@benjohnsoncreative Thank you so much!
Hello Ben, I am creating a reaction video show with my son. A lot different lighting scenarios. Should I get to mad dog lights as a key light or do one in the center and get two fill lights and angle them ? Great content!
I’d get two mountdog. Most of the time you can use one as the key and won’t even need a fill depending on where it’s placed but two would work just fine
Thanks for the reply!
One more question, I am looking to add a external mic to my cannon M50.
Not sure what mic to go with. I will be playing records and giving our reaction/feedback so I want the viewer to hear the songs plus our feedback. I am not sure if a shotgun mic is suitable for my channel… what do you recommend?
Hey Ben! Which camera do you use to record those videos?
Hey Marcos! I currently use the Sony A7C: amzn.to/35hvFZj Before that I used the Sony A7iii
I bought one Fotodiox Flapjack, what stand would you recommend?
I’d get something like this: amzn.to/3ucMsou
yes, but which are you using in this video? i love how soft it is.
The mountdog! Here’s another comparison with it: ua-cam.com/video/ngFHWWkkUx8/v-deo.html
@@benjohnsoncreative thanks!!!
Great content! However you mentioned in the video that flapjacks are not great for small rooms setup, may I know why? I'm doing makeup review/tutorial and interview videos for youtube, I live in a small apartment, what would you recommend for me? I was thinking the flapjacks would be the best since it's the slimmest of all but I might be wrong 😂Thanks in advance!
Best for you would be the mountdog softbox in my opinion, the flapjacks could work great for you, they are just overkill if you are leaving them in a room, they are meant to be used on the go
@@benjohnsoncreative ahh I see! the thing is we can't get a mountdog in the uk, we have some similar options on amazon like Andoer, and Neewer, but it's at least 80 pounds and the review says it's flimsy and a pain to assemble (was looking for something for a home temporary set up). I was just thinking if it's not that cheap either.. should I just top up and get something like amaran 60d? the GVM 80w looks appealing for a kit under 200 pounds, but currently out of stock. Would you recommend getting two cheap softboxes or invest in one good softbox?
What is the best for beauty makeup videos?
I’d go with a softbox style
Is the mount dog light portable? To take to clinents?
Definitely
How about the Godox LED lights, are they a good recommendation?
Godox makes great lights - I specifically love their tube lights
@@benjohnsoncreative thank you Ben!
Sup the second one isn't available anymore could you suggest an alternative please?
Here you go this is the same exact light: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083TRP38F/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=benjohnsonc0f-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B083TRP38F&linkId=24d26a86f3cce4e420cedb99a546c559
Is the inexpensive mountdog light also available in Europe or Germany? It would help me a lot. Oh yes, great video.

thanks man providing most important information for led light 🙏❤️ #thakaretech
Thanks for watching Nikhil!
Do have suggestions on backlights?
Are key lights still recommended even if you have two soft box lights?
I don’t know how you have them set up but I’d think one of those soft boxes in your key light and the other a fill light
@@benjohnsoncreative Thanks for the reply. I was sort of thinking 3 lights in a small space that I have might be redundant. So that makes sense
Hey, Ben you should update your list of featured gear, most of them are not sold on amazon anymore. And thank you for all the advices you give that I took. Ben from Paris
Hey, thanks for letting me know! most of them do still sell but they do get sold out recently due to supply chains etc
Hello Ben .Can I make a video with natural light without any spot lights ? Can I make my videos great with virtual lighting ? Or ıs that an obligation to use spot lights ? Is that one way to make great videos ?
You can def make a video with natural light
I’m not sure what you mean by virtual light
@@benjohnsoncreative for example using shapes and curves to create light with davinci resolve
curious why you don't recommend the fotodiox for youtubing in a small room etc.? because their output is more than that would require? or price?
It’s a great light for UA-camrs in a small room, just much more expensive than items like the mountdog which would work equally as well for much less
@@benjohnsoncreative Thanks!
What monitor do you use?
I use this one: amzn.to/3mPcWKz
Hi Ben i just do stream on twitch playing guitar do you think the vijim can work ?
yeah! Get your positioning right and it should work great
@@benjohnsoncreative thanks Mate 🥇
I wish I could get you to light my studio correctly. I’m about to burn this place to the ground lol
You can do it!
Beginner or not, lighting is the most important element in filming, so if your budget supports it, go for the best.
Its super important!
That mountdog system is $180 here in Australia, god we get RIPPED OFF here.
Bummer!
Mountdog kit is now $60. The $60 kit is the old bulb
Yes, they raised the price recently
@@benjohnsoncreative darn…all good. Still gonna grab them off your recommendation 🙏💪

I like this one as a budget friendly option: amzn.to/3GPAEid
This is another great more expensive option: amzn.to/3xfZm8A
Why didn’t you mention the Neewer lights that you said you use in your other video?? Suddenly those lights aren’t good anymore?
💯💯💯💯💯
Thanks for watching KDN!
When you do client work, you use 2 fotodiox flapjacks and 1 fillex p100?
The real name of the flapjacks is tge flapjack studio
It depends on the space and video but if I'm doing an interview style video than yes, that's usually my set up
I feel bad that I asked you last month which lens to get for my canon 90D to accomplish that look and you never responded. 😢🥺
I’d get a sigma 18-35 1.8 amzn.to/3q4VMca
@@benjohnsoncreative Thankyou so much sir
So in Scotland the Mountdog softbox set it far from 50 buckaroos.... it's £112, thats 136 buckaroos. I'm guessing that's no longer a budgety budget option lol
Bummer. It’s the US it’s still around $50 USD
what was the key light? I missed it
The key light is the main light that is lighting you
The fotodiox requires an attachment to make the light even softer.
You can use something to diffuse the light even more but it’s not needed, I’ve used them on hundreds on videos in a variety of locations without anything extra
@@benjohnsoncreative I switch to Fotodiox Studio XL from my Aputure 120D and Light Dome II, and I can't get a similar kind of soft lighting. I know I should not compare but still, would really be great considering the space-saving I get.
