It's amazing to think that the SM64 developers went through the trouble of having check where Yoshi was, in case they need to respawn him, and also check to make sure Mario is far enough away in order to respawn. They could have easily just had him walk between 4 exact points and be done with it, considering that he's really just an easter egg.
I'm surprised a bug like this wasn't found. I guess they didn't test all of his potential movement patterns. Would take a while and they were probably in the crunch
It boggles my mind how deep into SM64 you go. That you made a 12 minute video about blinking or understanding yoshis movement and how to alter it. I've never seen anyone go so far into any other game before. Considering how old SM64 is now, consider how much data you could get out of a current game.
I think I know why he's not stopping at one of the 'points' after walking on the slanted part. Instead of walking to a specific spot, he goes on a course designed to get him within a certain distance of the chosen spot, and stops when this maximum distance is reached. unfortunately, the course calculation is only 2D from a top-down perspective, so the slanted part alters the course just enough to never come close enough to the chosen spot.

I've played this game so many times since I got it in 1998. Just completed the game again a few minutes ago (it takes a fucking long time to finish this game at this age with almost zero free time). Anyway, I talked to Yoshi, was waiting for him to walk and then jump away. A couple seconds in I was like, "Shouldn't he have jumped by now?" And then he just walks off the ledge, falls into the water (with a splash noise, weirdly enough), the camera tries to follow him through the roof but can't, Yoshi keeps swimming and then the game soft locks. I am kind of on drugs at the moment and this bizarre Yoshi suicide glitch happens and it freaked me right the fuck out.
Yoshi has a flag to show the end of the cutscene after he jumps. The jump triggers based on his position and angle. Since he never goes to any of the usual expected places, the cutscene never ends because he never jumps
If he's anything like MIPS or a bob-omb buddy, then he probably falls slower in water and makes bubbles. And of course, he would continue to walk around.

Hey, I actually got this to work without manipulating Yoshi (at least, I don't think I manipulated him). This happened on the Wii U virtual console version, so I don't know if it can work on emulators or the Nintendo 64 itself. Basically, I started the game up, immediately went into the canon, launched myself to the castle roof, and talked to Yoshi. He was very close to the grey wall of the castle (not too far away from the left-most 1-up mushroom, actually [the mushroom sitting in the shadows]), and I talked to him almost directly face-on, he had to turn a bit to his right to speak to me. He gave me the 100 1-ups, took a hard left turn, and walked off the back of the castle, veering at a left angle when he hit the slope on the roof. At least, the camera tried to watch him do that. It kept panning until I was looking at the ground, and it stayed there. Again, this was on the Wii U, so I'm not sure how reliable this would be on other consoles. And I am most likely chalking this up to good old RNG. But from what I saw, this is completely possible to do without manipulating Yoshi. I don't have this record either, so I have nothing to prove this with. Hope this helps someone.
RNG is Random Number Generator. Basically, the computer has set number of places it will put Yoshi when the game starts. The Random (R) aspect means the location is picked at random, and that the game just picks any of the predetermined locations it wants. You can never predict which one it will choose, unless you're extremely lucky.
It looks like Yoshi turns and once is aligned with the area he wants to stop at, he keeps walking straight in that direction until he gets there. The slant changes the angle a bit, but Yoshi won't change his path, and ends up walking well past his designated stop.
"But on an emulator, we have save states" Yes indeed, my good sir. And, in fact, I rely almost ALWAYS on those save states when emulating Mario&Luigi SuperstarSaga.
i think on the ds version of this game in order to unlock the cannon outside the castle you need to get all stars because when i finally defeated bowser in the sky and watched the ending and then went to look at the cannon it was still barred up
you are the expert on sm64 i have to ask you something... have you ever hit the 3rd bomb in bowser3 and had him jump back on as if you just missed the throw?? just happened to me at the end of a really bad 16star run.. 3rd throw looked bad but exploded, i was totally shocked, kept panning the cam counting and was like "WTF?! ONE TWO THREE BOMBS... WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK??" lol
