Sungwon Lee - Seoul | Home Coffee Brewing with April #38

- This week, we’re bringing you the latest video from a series that we call Home Coffee Brewing with April. We stopped off in Seoul for quick visit to Sungwon Lee, to see his extensive collection April Brewers.
We believe that innovation in coffee brewing starts at home, and that some of the most special and meaningful interactions with coffee can take place within your own kitchen.
As we are frequently travelling visiting our international partners, we decided to introduce this format as a way to interact with you on a different level whilst maintaining the frequency of our videos.
In this video, Sungwon brews a Kenyan coffee from Kamavingi, roasted by Real Bean Roasting House. He uses an April Plastic Brewer, combined with April Paper Filters. The coffee was ground using a Mahlkonig EK43, with some 3D printed modifications. Sungwon uses two pouring kettles, one from Fellow and one from Brewista, to achieve different velocities when pouring.
We hope that you enjoyed this quick visit to Seoul. We will be now be moving on to the next chapter of the series, visiting home brewers in Japan.

Thank you for watching. What do you want to see next from us?

I just realized that the EK43 looked smaller is because he did not use the hopper, which makes sense since he's only single dosing.
Yeah, that - or using the smaller hopper version - is a good way to do it. What grinder do you use at home?
@@coffeewithapril Hey!!! I started with the Kinu M47 as my initial investment two years ago. Then I got the Timemore 078 for pourover. I just got into espresso two months ago and got the Flair 58 and the Timemore 064S. And all of these grinders, including the Flair, is still less than the price of the EK43. Hehe. But I get it, it's a commercial grade that's why.
Btw, did you go to the WOC Busan? I was hoping to meet some home brewers from Busan. Just want to see what is the trend in that area compared to Seoul. I'm from SE Asia, and I am really curious about the coffee scene in SK. I've seen a lot of UA-camrs making coffee content, and I even subscribed to some of them even if i don't understand Korean. 🥲
@@redchen3682 sounds like a great setup. The main difference between "commercial grade" is simply the work-ability of the grinder. It doesn't always provide a better tasting coffee on a single cup. That said, we are using EK43 in our stores.
We did go to Busan but as one of our team members competed in the World Barista Championships we were all in competition mode so we did not have time to film.
That said, next week we start rolling out our videos from Kyoto, Japan.
Absolutely love this series. Please don’t ever stop making these
Thank you for your support Alvin. We will keep them coming. Where do you recommend that we go next?

What did you think about the video?
I like how he looks so calm like staying at home for real lol, very easy to follow brewing structure.
We are glad you like it. It's some serious home vibes for sure. That's one of the advantages with meeting up with our Home Brewers at home, it makes them a lot more comfortable than if we were bringing them to a studio.
Lovely episode!
As an owner of an EK, were you succesful in finding the link for the hopper and the chute? (8:50)
Many thanks
That we are not sure about. But perhaps Sungwon Lee can reply to that?
Maybe he has a collector's DNA
Maybe, either way it's an impressive collection. Thank you for watching. What's your favourite part of the video?
Your glass brewer is my favorite design. I have one plastic one because i keep breaking the glass ones.
Someday ill get another glass one or a porcelain one
That way the Plastic comes in handy. We currently do full glass (brewer, server and the new mug).

another outstanding job choosing very humble and kind hosts , always look forward to the next CWA home brewing videos , thanks !
Thank you for watching. We have more coming your way.
That is korean standard home cafe. the EK43(with SecondLab knocker), april brewer, v60, origami, etc
It's impressive to see how high the quality level is at Home these days. Coffee Shops around the world has to watch out because their biggest competition is other home brewers.

And what brewer?
Finally someone with more April brewers than I own :) . I have two plastics (Blue, Pink), OG set, new ceramic and glass. I like glass the most. I’m not sure I find it the slowest, it works great for me and creates juicy cups
Thank you for the support. The Wood Brewer will launch later this summer. Which of the Brewers would you use to brew a lighter roasted Kenyan coffee?
@@coffeewithapril Wood sounds amazing! Can’t wait. I’d probably gravitate towards Glass but if I wanted more sweetness I’d use ceramic
@@wojciechsiemiakowski6916 thank you for sharing.

@@dylanbeschoner The wood version is in the making. We are doing the final tweaks in Japan as I write this.

Thank you for watching. How are you brewing coffee at home?
Amazing equipment collection, beautiful April Brewer collection , love the two way cup🔥
It's an impressive collection and really interesting for us to see up close. What's your main take-away from the video?
What is the name of the 2 way coffee mug? @16 mins?
The roasting machine that 'Real Bean' uses is 'TRINITAS' made in Korea.
Thank you for sharing that. We were curious. What's your favourite roastery in Korea?
Bean of RealBean
Orca's recipe
Second lab's Ek43 tools

I like that the host is good at asking questions and keeping the coffee conversation going without making it feel too forced or formal.
Thank you for the feedback. We are glad you liked it. Any ideas on how we can make it better?
@@coffeewithapril You're welcome. I'll give you all of my ideas if you invite me for a cup of coffee! I actually only just learned about April Coffee today through a friend, even though I live in Copenhagen, so I have yet to visit. I like that the videos are not "excessively" edited with a lot of cuts and graphics, etc. I enjoy the single, long, coherent take format that you're doing with the addition of the high quality close-ups, especially those focusing on the coffee-brewing process itself. This style makes for an informally relaxing and informative viewing experience. It is a nice change of pace from the short-attention-span media content so prevalent today. So, based on my own preferences, I'd suggest that you continue down this track that you are on, because I believe that the quality of your videos, and the identity surrounding your brand, will develop steadily and naturally this way.
Wow he really got some style
Sure thing. What did you like the best with this video?
