It was terrible. The only reason why I made it through the whole movie was because I never realized it started

The ads for this thing make me want to put the purple thing in a blender

I definitely see what you mean. I went and saw it yesterday. I wasn't expecting it to be as much of a kids' movie as the trailer made it out to be, but I'm not surprised. I think that was one of its biggest downfalls. It was very kid-friendly to the point where it was a little bit annoying. I was expecting something that wouldn't be and would at least be a little bit more grown-up, at least for some teenagers, but I was mistaken.
Another huge issue I had with it was that the movie was incredibly vague with its plot and story. They didn't really give you direct attention to certain plot points, and it was kind of hard to understand what was going on, especially when it came to both of the parents. I realized the mom was dying from cancer, I presume, but they never really say it. Later on, the dad is in the hospital for some reason, and again, they don't really tell you exactly why either.
I was greatly perplexed why they had the main girl have her imaginary friend be a human, which didn't make much sense compared to everyone else's, which was a cartoon character. It was just all over the place. Not saying it wasn't a good attempt at something original, but there were certain things like this that made it kind of confusing for me.

Yeah you're absolutely right I didn't even notice that Ryan Reynolds does feel different in this movie. I'm glad he's not giving another Deadpool performance either.

You summed it up perfectly. My husband and I took our 5 yo to see it today and were really put off by it. We weren't expecting a masterpiece or anything, but the trailers made it seem happy and fun. Plus, we loved a lot of the cast.
Within the first few minutes I knew we made a mistake of seeing this in theaters (I can handle some emotional stuff in movies but typically prefer happier movies! Especially in theaters) It started off super depressing and never really bounced back from that. The IFs were all sad about their kids and were even in therapy, Ryan Reynolds, who I'm a fan of, seemed absolutely miserable - continuing the depressing vibe with very little comedic relief to balance all of the sadness. And my husband pointed out that there were only two kids in the entire movie, one being a hospital patient. That's another thing, SO MANY HOSPITAL SCENES. Not to mention all of the holes or parts that didn't quite make sense or land.
It could have been a great movie if more thought had gone into it, and maybe if BOTH parents weren't sick - that was too much and too heavy. Visually I thought it was nice and the actors did a great job. We just left feeling bummed out and we probably won't watch it again.

It only makes me think of the wonderful monsters inc. because I wish it was that instead.

IF looks like garbage & has a similar extremely cheesy vibe to it like "Free Guy". That movie was terrible too! And Ryan Reynolds is now typecast as Deadpool.

I want to ask you your personal thoughts on this. I thought Ryan Reynolds' character was the little girl's imagination of her dad in the hospital because John Krasinski looks so much like Ryan Reynolds. What do you think? 🤔💭 Or at least, I thought she used him as a lookalike, and that's why he turned out to be her imaginary friend-because he looked like her dad.

It’s not a bad theory but I think he was just her If. She had pictures of Calvin the clown growing up.

@@gavinevans1687 I have really mixed feelings. Yeah I know they showed a picture of him at the end but still he looked a lot like John Krasinski 😮 and it really makes you wonder! Because his character was very playful too. And I got the feeling that Ryan Reynolds was playing how she felt about her dad not being as playful on the inside. What do you think 🤔💭
