Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

My father in law worked on developing the Crimson Sweet watermelon 60 years ago at Clemson University. After graduation, he became a Clemson County Extension Agent. We grow them every year as it is a fond childhood memory for my husband. Plus they taste SOOOOO GOOD!

I put a table out by the side of the road today and sent 60+ plants to work with my husband as I empty out my greenhouse to make way for new seeds I’m starting. I love giving away plant! Mostly tomatoes - great germination this year - I went to a friend’s house and she BOUGHT the same plants I’m giving away. 😂 I picked up my CSA at the local family owned farm today and their U PICK strawberry patch was filled with families. What a beautiful day! 😊

Being a native Michigander I'm so happy you're growing MiGardener's seeds! I've always had good harvests here in my postage stamp sized garden, and you'll love the purple pod pole beans; being almost 70 it saves a lot of wear & tear on your back come picking time.

Once the beans grow up the trellis, you will love the ease of picking. Just a small tip, put the cattle panel up higher. Most of the pole beans I've grown get pretty tall and they flop over the top into a jungle-y mess, even when the top of the panel was 6-1/2' ft +/- up. Did make a nice shady spot to pick beans though. Can't wait to see how beautiful your garden is as it grows. Good luck

    • @rainspringing
      @rainspringing Рік тому +1

I'd say bend the cattle panel over next time, so the bean tops are still reachable without a ladder! I'm 5ft 2inches. While I'm grateful when pole beans start up, so I can stop crawling around picking bush beans. There is a bit of a forethought situation for those out of reach top jungles, if I don't give another route!

Migardener is my goto seed provider. I have been binge watching Lukes videos recently to plant corn and strawberries new this year. My bare root strawberries and horseradish are on their way😊
Thanks for teaching us how to plant in garden fabric.

  • @doityourselflivinggardenin7986

Your soil is dead. You are correct that it takes years (3 actually) to create a living organism called soil. It will be impossible using fabric because the plastic disrupts the microbiome cycle. We all make our own choices in how we garden, so if what you are doing is working good enough for you, then so be it. However, for those who wish to grow more nutrient rich vegetables, I will suggest reading up on how to create living soil. When your soil is alive you will no longer need a drill, even with the stones.
It is warming to feel your excitement about planting your garden! 😃
My garden is being planted in drips and drabs because I recently had hernia surgery. I did some planting before the operation and my adult kids are doing the rest. I too am looking forward to a month from now!
It's always good to hear the roosters in the background!
    Happy gardening everyone!

Sooo, I see you are putting a cattle panel down for your purple green beans. You may want to consider raising your cattle planes up about 1 1/2 ‘ on your t posts, to give a little more height. The running green beans really grow tall. We always raise our panels, and have great success. The plants don’t really put on great runners, until they are almost a foot tall, so we just thread the ones that don’t take to the cattle panel, and they take off! They are easier to pick! The purple is great! My grandma was planting purple beans for 70ish years (as far back as my dad can remember), and the seeds have been passed down! My grandma always called them “magic” beans, because they changed colors when cooked! They are the best!
Also…..as far as okra go….try cow horn okra! It’s amazing! It is great freeze dried to go in different things, with seasoning for snacks, and we even fry it, and then freeze fry it! It is oh….so good. Of course the fried wouldn’t store as long, but we have had it stored a couple years, and it is so yummy for snacks or to have with a meal! Good luck in all you do!

I have to change up the spot where I grow tomatoes and the soil isn't the greatest there. But what you said about your soil, and knowing that your plants have still thrived, gives me much more hope! (It helped just to SEE the soil you're planting in, which looks like mine! I have to remember that in-ground is very different from a raised bed!)

I use an auger as well. MO rocks can be a wrist breaker, but certainly saves a lot of struggle.

Thank you 😊 I was a little worried. My tomatoes got a little tall on me but after watching your video today it gave me peace of mind that they will be ok. The weather has been a little wet in my part of the woods. Finally getting a break today…so I plan to plant everything out this morning. 😊

With comments on YT Next Level Gardening - the reason why bugs come is that flatlander gardening actually makes big and inviting bug targets. Garden airport flight lines (crop rows) make for a singular long line of smell-aroma inviting those bugs (cabbage maggot, cabbage moths) et al buggers to come, land, and chew on the invitational vegs. The same for clear land around singular large plants (melons, squash et al) being a huge singular bug target for landing and chewing on. While it seems contra-indication - plant multiple vegs, and herbs into 4x4 or 6x6 areas that can all be physically reached into from the surrounding walkway - almost looking like a very-compacted medieval monastic herbarium of various heights and varieties of plants (which is what it is !). This covers up the singular smell of carrots or cabbages, or squash et al, ... as roots crops, leafy vegs, herbs, corn stalks, viney vegs, all contradict those singular smell targets. So planting4-8 carrots and other root crops (beets, turnips, salsify, rutabagas) , along with 1-2 potato, tomato, chili, pepper, eggplant (solanides), herbs of various strong smells (marigolds et al), and colorful flowers (nasturtiums - bee pollinator targets), corn, squash ... lettuce et al leafies, ... solves these bug problems. Corn supports the vines (cucumbers, squash, nitrogen-fixing beans). Yes it means selective harvesting of more carrots or vegs through more veg/herb blocks (and this is NOT square foot gardening technology which is also a bug taget) - but you won't have bug problems (cost of pesticides, insecticide etc). and compacted veg/herb blocks have easier composting and manure tea fertilization than spraying across a vast area of gardening. Super-compaction is more-cost effective and less total cost (labor, sweat, blood, tears) for one's gardening needs. And doing successional harvesting ... and successional planting and harvesting of later veg/herb blocks allow you to properly harvest the first blocks and eventually harvest them out, while transerring to the later successional blocks. One then can successional plant these first blocks, while the other blocks remain productive. More productivity, more polination, more harvesting, more produce in less space. Less irrigation of flatlander space as well.
