Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

After canning 300 quarts of tomatoes for her large family of 9 children, my mom would use the green tomatoes and end of season peppers, to make green tomato relish. It's a favorite of almost every one of us grown children! We eat it with roast and with scrambled eggs! It's a must have! Every season one of us makes a big batch, and shares it with the rest of us. The next season another sister makes a batch to share. Once you try it, it becomes a staple. You could use your sugar substitute instead of sugar. Google a recipe for green tomato relish. You won't be sorry!

For green tomatoes, I like to make salsa verde. I’ve made the recipe from NCHFP, The Ball Book and The All New Ball Book. The roasted salsa verde in The All New Ball Book is now my favorite. I also made/canned the Chicken Verde in that book. I use the salsa to make green enchiladas and Green Chili.

Hi Kevin & Sarah! I live here in Iowa about an hours drive south of Des Moines. And we still have not had a frost yet. My garden is still producing but it's about done for the year. My egg plants are reblooming and so are the tomato plants due to 80 degree weather the last week and 70 degree weather since then. Today it's 67 degrees (10/25/20) and we are expecting 30's & 40's next week. So I guess I have to get my plants pulled before we get snow. Love, Light & Blessings to all!

I grew a pepper this year called Holy Mole! It's the type of pepper used to make mole sauce. I didn't end up getting enough at one time from my one plant to make mole sauce, but I'll definitely be growing more next year. The mole peppers are not very spicy and have a rich, complex flavor. Another of my favorite peppers to grow is Poblano (also called Ancho peppers). I love to make stuffed peppers with Poblanos or simply roast them the same as you do sweet red peppers, peel the skin off and use for anything you would use roasted sweet peppers. They are mild heat pepper as well.

Maybe you guys should produce a book, booklets, classes, videos series for Homesteaders & viewers expressing ur insights & working programs of all areas of a homestead concerning simplistic order & appealing set ups. How to set things up for the most fluent flow, “curb” appeal, storage of necessary items as well as surplus or off season supplies, etc.
So many UA-cam Homesteads are a mess. Junk everywhere, so much is dirty and stored in overgrown weeds. Ur Homestead looks groomed, clean & a strong sense of planned order. I think homesteaders would love ur insights, ideas & maybe videos concerning these different topics. A Book on this subject might sell well & prove very lucrative for you as well. Kinda the behind the scenes to establish a well organized, fluent, clean orderly Homestead.
Some UA-cam homesteaders want to be a business & or also provide Air B & B - I can’t imagine w/the unattractive mess of so many homesteads.

I tried a second planting of zucchini, but the squash bugs still annihilated them. I direct seeded a few more, but they never had enough time to grow and fruit. Unfortunately, they were my last saved seeds, so I'm going to have to buy zucc seeds for next Spring.
I picked all my mature green tomatoes and put them in paper bags. They were the most uniformly colored of all the tomatoes I harvested this years, and they all ripened. So put your green tomatoes in paper bags and they will ripen. You'll have home grown fresh tomatoes for Thanksgiving.

The past 2 summers when the cucumbers were in abundance, I made the cucumber lime aid that Keven makes. My daughter and I can't drink enough of it. So this summer I thought I would make some and freeze to see how it does. Oh my!! I thawed a gallon last week and it tasted so fresh! I only froze 2 gallons and when I saw you pick the late cucumbers I had a tinge of jealousy. I will definitely freeze as many gallons as my freezer will hold next summer.

I put about 20 paprika peppers in the freezer today, waiting on the others, about 50. Hubs will smoke them and I’ll freeze dry and make powder out of them. About 70 ghost peppers ready for the freeze dryer. Spicy pepper powder, for the bbq!

I make a green tomato pie with a few of them. Old family recipe. Just add a little extra spice and sugar to an apple pie recipe and slice them thin. Very juicy and sweet tart. Yum.

Mid-Michigan lower peninsula. Almost in line with MI Gardner ;) a few hours west of him... Our garden is "asleep" for the winter with the exception of beets and carrots we are hoping to get a bit more growth from before pulling. Garlic is planted and covered, raspberries, asparagus, and Niagra grape vines are all cut back and strawberries have a cover of straw.

I picked some dried okra for seed and all my peppers Sunday afternoon. Bittersweet, but I am ready to relax for awhile.

I put my green tomatoes in a box and check every few days. They ripen. The skins are tougher and they taste like grocery store tomatoes, but do in a pinch.

I'm from New Mexico. Try growing pablano green peppers and Hatch green chiles. Green chile salsa is wonderful. You can use pablano chile for chile Rellenos. Green chile makes wonderful salsa and even chow chow. I've made green tomato salsa and chow chow before.

At the end of tomato season I pick everything even the green ones and they ripen in the house. Then I use those for salsa or tomato sauce.

Green tomato jam is wonderful. Not sure if it could be made with stecia, but worth trying. Would make a great holiday gift idea too. I loved when my step mom made this from the green tomatoes at the end of the growing season. My grandma wrapped each green tomato in newspaper and left single layer in the gatage. They lasted a long time there and turned red.

We got a vert late season this year in the Peace Country of Northern Alberta. We had a touch of frost in the middle of Sept as evidence on my Zucchini plant showed. Oct 20 I was outside with shorts on at +17 only to wake up the 22 with two inches of snow, -4 and searching for thermals. Lol. We do not get a lot of ripe tomatoes on the vine out hear. Most are ripened in the house. As long as the skin is shiny, they will ripen. This year saw an overabundance of all garden produce. I have enough for the next few years and shared buckets with friends. But of course I am still thinking ahead about what I can try next year. Lol. Bring on the seed catalogues. 😀

i did my final harvest 2 weeks ago. I could have left the garden growing a few weeks longer but in all honesty by mid October I am just over it and ready to enjoy my time doing other hobbies like fishing and hunting. . Plus its nicer taking the garden out while the weather is still dry and pleasant to work in. .. in my opinion there is no guilt in ending my growing season 3-4 weeks before first frost. I still have buckets of ripening tomatoes on my shelf, tons of frozen veggies saved away too.

I took down my backyard garden a few weeks ago. Good thing because we've had rain every weekend for 8 weeks straight. The only left are a few pepper plants. I miss going out back and picking fresh veggies. We can all use some rest.

Great harvest. I am not sure where the information started but rest assured that the pure green tomatoes will ripen for you. I had 577 pounds of green tomatoes spread on the floor of my house that are all now red.
