Over the last couple years, I’ve had a growing feeling that teaching carpentry exclusively through UA-cam videos is not the most effective way of doing my job...So, I’m starting something new!
As of summer 2023, I’ll begin offering online video courses through my own website, thehonestcarpenter.com!
The website still needs a serious overhaul, and I’m in the process now of developing my first online video courses. BUT I know that this will be the ultimate way to teach carpentry, construction techniques, trades knowledge, tool knowledge, and even elements of contracting and building code.
UA-cam is an extraordinary platform, which contains an outrageously diverse range of topics...and it’s FREE FOR EVERYBODY. But the presence of the algorithm requires that content creators spend a lot of time thinking of ways to get videos to simply perform well.
Through my own online courses, I’ll be able to teach you carpentry in THE WAY I KNOW IT SHOULD BE TAUGHT! I can be far more thorough, and explore the appropriate topics without worrying about how the algorithm will handle them.
So, if you’ve ever REALLY wanted to learn about carpentry and construction, just hold tight. Soon you’ll have great video courses explaining everything from the bottom up, giving you total insight into how things should be done.

Great book for a beginner . ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ this book really starts from the beginning, as in it explains what basic tools are and how to use them. But when it gets to the art of creating joints and how and when to use them this book really starts to teach you something. At least that was my experience.
Ethan, your explanation shows that you really know your audience and are genuinely trying to work within the youtube constraints. Most of us are here for your realistic and sound teaching. You are on to something good and I'm excited to see what you develop by yourself and with the collaboration of professionals you know. Keep up the great work.

At 65 my "what do I want to be when I grow up" days are behind me. As for the what, when, how, and show time lengths, etc are concerned, I would draw from your own building and trade experience, recalling what helped you the most-what was the most effective when it came to learning as a: DIYer, a contractor, and a YT content creator. At 69 and homeowner who would rather “do the job myself” I use YT for a lot of how to’s. It’s not for me to learn something for future use, it’s to get this job done and move on.
This channel is an excellent source, however I do use additional resources for a total picture.

HC Univ. is a fantastic idea. Due to time constraints and juggling so many different people; my first thought would be to use short time frames per session, while completing an overall large topic. I'll head out and answer questions. This is seriously a fantastic idea! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Great idea! Your channel is one of my favorites. Longer courses are great as long as there are chapters. I’ll often want to review a particular piece of a video but don’t want to watch the entire thing over again. Chapters also help when learning about something that I don’t have a clue about because I need time to digest the first part before going on to the next.
My thought process has always been toward helping people with their projects. The UA-cam algorithm was never considered. Do I reach as many people as you? No. That doesn't stop me from creating full-length tutorials or mini series. Some of my videos are an hour long, packed with all the information someone may need to complete their project. Do a couple of longer videos and see how they do. Your following is far better than mine and some of my longer videos perform very well on UA-cam. Thanks for the great content and looking forward to the next steps.
Ethan, you are an awesome teacher. I love your style of teaching. For me I want to learn to make shelves, and indoor and outdoor furniture. Everything from picking the right wood to techniques to make sure the furniture is esthetically pleasing is a challenge for me. But bite size videos as part of a detailed course would be what I can sign on to.
As a "tool chick," I'm excited about this!! You're so easy to follow and understand that I look forward to quick tips AND long tutorials on your new site. If you had an 8-hour start-to-finish table saw tutorial, for example, I'd bring my laptop out in the garage and follow along. I keep trying to get into a local table saw class but can never make it work with my schedule.
A comprehensive table saw class would be killer...but, honestly? That's not why I'm here. I'm here for studs, and pony walls, and recognizing a load-bearing wall. How to frame, how to read a blueprint, how to center wall studs, how to cut rafters...you know...carpenter stuff. I am already a decent woodworker.
Many carpenter tricks transfer to woodworking, and you do well in that area, Ethan. But I want 'carpenter'.
Check out Steve Ramsey. It is said his Woodworking for Mere Mortals are chock full of information you need to know. I've not gone through his course, but if it is like his videos, it would be worth investigating.

You’re a damn good teacher Ethan. A full coarse with 1/2 hr. Videos on your website would be very helpful. We can peruse them at our leisure depending on what projects we’re working on or what stage we’re at in those projects. Take your time setting this up. Your health comes first my man. I've subscribed to your channel for years now & you're still the only tradesperson I've subscribed to. Your delivery style is clear & concise with extremely easy to follow instructions & great camera angles. Delivery time frames, I think using a combination depending of the variable complexities of what's being taught.
Honestly, I wouldn't own half the tools I do, including the most handy tool in the world, because you give me the confidence to try & I've succeeded beyond my expectations. So I would have to say, your particular delivery style is what makes your instruction videos so successful. Love your work.
I do appreciate your UA-cam vids; they are chock full of insightful straightforward insider information which helps me to comprehend carpentry and home repair better…and allows me to know when I can do something myself or when to call a pro. Since carpentry is not my profession, I most likely would not partake in classes, but if I needed a deeper understanding of a project, then a shorter one hour might be all my schedule and brain could tolerate. This comment hit the nail on the head for me. You probably have three audiences - young people going into the trades, the Kimberly’s (and me) wanting to get basic info on how to do a project for DIY or so we don’t get screwed by a contractor, and old farts who want to learn deep and have a lot of time.
I see smallish fee “short courses” and larger fee university curriculum. The latter a discount fee for bulk curriculum for the trades folks or individual fee for in depth on, say, “all things drywall” for the old fart who is confident that his wife is wrong. 😅

For the shorter form style things, I'd still lean on UA-cam, even if the videos themselves were 30+ min long. That 4-8 hour approach for Honest U sounds like the way to go. REAL deep dives, so every experience level can benefit.
There really must be some method to the Universe's madness. I was literally thinking YESTERDAY that I wish there was some protracted course series I could take and here you are, offering it. As to length, I like the longer option you suggested, but many others will not. So perhaps two tiers. As to subjects, I would like someone to do in depth teaching on each power tool-so not 15 minutes. And for absolute beginners. For instance, I am finding myself very intimidated by my router. All the videos assume a level of knowledge I just do not have. Start from the ABSOLUTE beginning and then work us into more and more complex uses. This is so exciting. I can hardly wait for your series to begin.
Your online courses idea is a great one! Count me in! I have already signed up and paid for the Steve Ramsey classes, and I did learn quite a bit. What I like best about it, is that once you have paid your "tuition" you have access to it for life. That is so cool. I think you should structure your classes in whatever way you are most comfortable with. I think your UA-cam audience trusts you with the way you would present the content. At least I do. I know that you will put a ton of time and effort into your courses, and whatever you price it at will be both reasonable, and well worth it. Good luck with this venture.

What got me to watch was the title of your channel and what got me to subscribe was the content and the way you explain items.
I like anything in the 30-60 minute segments and it is ok to break down a project into a sections of classes.
Example: building a deck, starting with foundations, wood selection, tools needed and education on supplies so on so forth can run into about a dozen classes.
Can't wait to join! More than anything I would love to see material that gets into your thinking and philosophy. How are you making your decisions? How you choosing your methods? How would a beginner carpenter think about a problem vs a veteran? Thanks!
I really like the idea of the courses supplemented with the short clips. Your continued use of outside experts for more detailed information is very useful also. Not sure if I have an option on short or longer courses. Short segments of the course makes sense though. Length of course swill probably be driven by size of project. Good luck with the format changes and I’ll be there when you Start up these offerings.

Ethan, this is a wonderful idea! I'd say the longer the better, with it broken into sections. When I got into carpentry, it was a steep learning curve, filled with carpenters who were not always equipped to help someone with low skill take on more difficult tasks to improve quickly/safely. You're an amazing teacher, so I think you'll help a lot of people with this! Id suggest covering safe ripping/cross cutting of material--that's always a tough ones for new people in the shop .

I think that this is a great idea! I feel that it should not be about length and segmenting, but more dedicated to projects, and what it would take to complete a specific project or learn a specific skill!

i've gravitated towards framing - it is hard and i'm not feeling like i'm that good at it, but it is fulfilling and humbling and i am thankful that i'm in a position to make this kind of career shift as a young adult.

I really appreciate the breadth of your knowledge and how you present it. From your channel, I've learned not only how to handle a circular saw safely and how to measure like a pro with a tape measure, but also why the Masonite siding on my house (sigh) is such a mixed bag. I love the Honest Carpenter University idea. The advantage of the 1-2 hour format is that it's less of a commitment and (I assume) less expensive than a longer course. I would imagine that many topics I am interested in could be covered adequately in 1-2 hours and I would be more likely to watch all of it. Thanks again for your great work, and I look forward to my first semester.

Ethan you're an experienced tradesman, but UA-cam is full of videos from experienced tradespeople, however they don't have your gift as a teacher. In my attempt to go from "never mounted a shelf" to "build my own shed" I've subscribed to a handful of great UA-cam trades channels, but none offer the depth and scope of information that you do, along with the clarity of your explanations. Attention spans are shorter these days, sadly, because topics like framing, foundations, or even door installations are pretty complex for a 15 minute video, but a series of short videos around a central skill would be great. "Basic carpentry" "Painting" "Drywall Installation and repair" "Basic plumbing and fixtures" etc. I'll definitely be signing up and I'm very grateful for your willingness to share the benefits of your knowledge and experience.

Ethan, I think this is a great idea. You are a wonderful teacher and it is easy to see how much you care about doing quality work both as a carpenter and as a teacher. You brought up an excellent point about YT being a wonderful educational tool especially because it is free. Please keep that in mind with your courses. We all understand that you have to be compensated for your time and your worth but please keep accessibility in mind when you consider the price for your courses. Also, when considering the length of segments of videos I understand wanting to keep them short but I please also keep in mind what makes sense for the project at hand. Please don’t stop at 12 minutes if it makes sense to go to 15 minutes to do the project justice. I applaud your efforts and wish I had the opportunity to apprentice with you about 15 years ago. Keep up the great work!

I started my hobby of carpentry, for a particular project, using no power tools. As it progressed, I ended up learning about different aspects of the types of wood, tools, cutting, joinery etc. My only resource- back issues of Popular Mechanics !
So I suggest that your chapter could be a project, broken down into 4 to 6 videos covering the different aspects.
With your own website, as the project lists grow, you can give cross reference & links to earlier videos which already covered that aspect in detail....finally creating a beautiful lattice of knowledge.

Congratulations on your new project! I think the idea of an online carpentry course that covers everything you need to know to build your own home is fantastic.
In my opinion, it would be best to keep the videos short, ranging from 10 to 25 minutes, and organize them into easily searchable sections. Building a website and monetizing the course can be overwhelming, but you could learn from the experiences of other online course creators. One potential solution could be collaborating with another website, such as Khan Academy or other tradespeople like electricians and plumbers.

Great idea. I'd like longer courses on cabinetry. I found your channel a few years ago, and it's helped me understand some of the basics of maintaining my home, or asking the right questions to more experienced people. I'm at a point where I want to start building custom shelving for my closets. I think that would be a helpful series, and one that is complimentary to weekend woodworker.

If it wasn't for you I would have never been able to fix the bottom of the cabinet under my kitchen sink. All the other videos I found were where they ripped the bottom part out of the cabinet and that seemed like way too much of a hassle. Then when I watched you're video it was so much better and I really like how you explained that removing the bottom would eventually lead to more problems with the rest of the cabinet and/or cabinets around that one cabinet. So I'm glad you're starting an online course to help educate others in a better way then here on UA-cam. Thanks!

Your channel is awesome and super helpful for the handful of your videos that I've had a chance to learn from. I like your idea of offering courses to be able to more comprehensively cover topics as lessons. I think you should not limit yourself to one or the other time windows and rather pursue both depending on the time requirements of the specific topic.
I'd love to see a video or course on (No bracket) angle calculation for junctions in specific, but all cuts on wood frame geodesic domes.

It's going to take and be a lot of hard work for you, and fine tuning, and you have to balance family life, work life, and cyberspace life. Only you know what's best for you and your family, but I, for one, would be interested. At 63, I'm a hobby woodworker (or wood tryer!), and I've already learned a lot of what NOT to do (but still continue making mistakes, of course). You, Steve, Stumpy and Colin are my "go to" people. Good luck, take care, and above all, get the lifestyle balance right. Family first!
