i’m an 18 year old just out of highschool about to turn 19. i don’t really have a 100% idea of what I wanna do but the trades have always been in my mind I just didn’t know what I wanted to do but I’ve been looking into carpentry a lot lately I just don’t know a lot. but I know it’s a good trade to get into and a good career to be successful in. i’m also a dad of one year and I am super eager to find a career to fall in love with and be able to have a steady income to support my daughter. is there any tips on how to start and where to start? and do I need to know a lot about it before I go into trade school?

Our union in that area is represented by IKORCC.org, which has training centers in Columbus, Monroe, Richfield and Rossford, Ohio. Apprenticeship will allow you to learn under the direction of highly skilled instructors at our state-of-the-art training centers. That will be scheduled in conjunction with your employment on union sites. As you progress through the apprenticeship, your skills, your paycheck and your benefits grow, too. Can I start this when I'm 31? I think I may be good at this and enjoy it but I'm worried I may be too old. I've worked a bit with a saw a bit but mostly just dismantling a porch. I feel like it would be more rewarding to put stuff together and make money building a useful skill.

The union apprenticeship program does not have any cost. Every member of the union makes very small, regular contributions to the training program and has access to free training throughout their careers. The apprenticeship combines paid work on jobsites under experienced carpenters and class/workshop training with trained and experienced instructors. The UBC is in an extremely vulnerable position; an ever shrinking talent pool, weak political choices and a refusal to be transparently honest with their members are all contributing factors. As a 20 year veteran myself, I see first hand the repercussions of these changes and it's simply not sustainable. The demographics have drastically changed from men who took pride in their craft to be master carpenters are all but retired, leaving in the dust folks who want to simply earn a paycheck, with little motivation, lack of positivity and a very low intelligence levels. The UBC, in a panicky fashion, has over the years thought to fight against this great decline with hiring on minorities, women, substance abuse candidates and other ever changing political moves to try and survive. This has left us with a shallow and hollow shell. The trade off of hiring out of the dumpsters for political limelight has hurt the signatory contractors by not being able to compete with the non-union folks. The quality of craftsmanship and motivation is just not there. Is there only slugs, hall rats and concrete cowboys left? I wouldn't let half of the new apprentices even get my coffee at the roach coach..... These are some truly sad days in the union, with the worst to come!
Not sure why it was needed to include women joining as apart of your general complaint, saying as women are often times even more driven in male dominated fields then the men themselves.
