I've seen Harry road test many many car's, super car's etc, but I've never seen him have a constant grin on his face like he is on this one, he's like a kid at Christmas..!! and why not, I think we all would to. Great stuff.
How could you not have fun driving a Quattro Sport its a true legend and you get that sound no other car ever sounded like a original Quattro and the performance is still good compared to current cars.
Great to see this SWB Quattro getting the respect it deserves. I spent a weekend in one back in the 80s during a visit to the factory. I was visiting an engineer I met the previous summer during the 5000 Quattro intro at Road America. Hans and I spent time driving the rural roads and a trip to Munich. Absolutely brutal cornering and braking. Hans told me they lost money on everyone they sold due to the tremendous cost to build them. Very special indeed. Cheers all!
Geeza is multi, multi millionaire, got plenty to throw at production and a life time of contacts in the motor and journalism industries, of course he surpasses everyone else.
Who needs second rate programs like top gear & the grand tour, step forward Harry, hands down your better than the lot of them, a decent & down to earth guy telling us how it is, no gimmicks, no stupid jokes...legend 👍🏻👍🏻
It actually is better than those shows! I find all those shows quite boring and scripted, I just want the real car content, leave out the travel and comedy bs!
Fantastic video Harry. But you said the Sport Quattro would form one of your 5 car "Dream Garage" - equally interesting: can you tell us what would be the other 4 cars?
Why Harry is the best on UA-cam, no kid could really appreciate this car while Harry spins yards of tales about Group B and know how special this car is. You could see it in his eyes while driving that his was driving auto royalty. Not just driving it around the block but proper rowing of gears getting on it. Why Harry is the baller of UA-cam car channels.
I worked for an Audi dealership at the time, so ur quattro customers were given the opportunity to demo the swb Quattro. So Audi UK’s demo would turn up and spend more time being driven by us than customers. Really fun times. There just wasn’t a car like it at the time. Shortly after I bought an ur quattro. Anywhere I parked it I always came back to find a crowd around it. A truly fantastic car in it’s time.
As a teenager in the 80’s this was a car I lusted after (along with the Porsche 911 turbo) it just looked so squat and purposeful; a tool ready to do a job well! I seem to remember that Chris Harris tested one a couple of years ago and he was just as in love with it as Harry seems to be! I think his was dark green with the white wheels, fantastic!
I recall being behind a white one in the 80s and when it put its foot down a huge flame 🔥 came out of the exhaust pipe - I was in love from that moment !
Amazing car. Harry's delight in driving it reminded me of the utter excitement my friends and I felt whenever we encountered one of these specials, brought out by a manufacturer; this was back in the late 70s, early 80s. Harry's Garage - best car show by far. Presented by a genuine enthusiast.
This is my favourite video, ever. My all time most wanted car, reviewed by the best. I have and will continue to watch this again and again. Thank you Harry. Your excitement and passion shines through (more than usual) in this one. I absolutely love it.
I was given a lift once in a similar Quattro, I remember vividly how smooth and powerfully mighty the engine was...still my dream car to this day. Thanks Harry this made my day and re-watching it all over again in case I missed something! 😁
the stuff of teenage wet dreams. I remember Michelle Mouton being in Leeds city centre in the full blown rally car in 84 during the RAC rally. Still the coolest rally car and driver combination, ever.
In 1982-83, while waiting for the school bus every morning, a pearlescent white Ur-Quattro used to drive past. More than once I missed the last bus just to hear and see it growl past. Against the usual Cortinas (occasional Sierra 1.6s) Marinas and Chevettes it looked like it was from another planet. I know that's an over-used cliché, but it was just so different, and so charismatic with that engine note and stance on the road. It is so ironic that on urban roads like those we saw in London, we now need high suspension travel and compliant high profile tyres. But we get exactly the opposite. Built by Audi when engineers ran the place, not stylists, marketing hipsters and mediocre managers, they are still living off this car's image today.
Love your videos. You're wealthy enough to own / drive some great cars, but so casual and down to earth I could easily sit in a pub with you and talk cars. It's a rare trait my friend. Well done from Canada and keep it up.
When I was a young man in the early eighties the car that got my juices flowing the most were these cars, it just felt like the future had arrived and a little later I think it was the 100 which had the first truly flush side glass which looked so futuristic, Audi were on fire. Sadly for me the current fair from Audi leaves me cold.
ianmedium, I know exactly what you mean. I always admired Audi engineering in the 80s and early 90s. They were that little bit different, with some proper engineering built in to the design. They also managed to avoid the attention of the red braces and filofax brigade that ruined the image of BMW and Porsche. They were driver's cars, cool only to those in the know. That 10v soundtrack was intoxicating too. But then Gene Hunt came along, and all of a sudden Audi was on the radar of all the wrong sort of people who ruined the brand's image. VW Group haven't helped much either. The S and RS Series cars are still pretty special, but not quite as much as Audi used to be. As for the rest of the range, well, oh dear. I feel like I'm sitting in an expensive Skoda with a lot of them. The Audi distinction has been lost. Which is a crying shame. It's almost criminal.
I was lucky enough to sell the 10v and 20v and ultimately the Torsen diff models new during the eighties - I say sell, they sold themselves! Just awesome cars and a great time in my life. Thank you for the opportunity to reminisce ✊
I tried to sell them too, but I just mainly sold Polos to old ladies in Bexhill-on-Sea! I was always trying to borrow one from Milton Keynes (a Quattro, not an old lady!) for some poor bloke whom I’d bullied into agreeing to a test-drive! My boss always saw straight through my schemes and put a stop to them! 🙄
Excellent as ever Harry. I'd love to see you trying some other homologation specials from that period. Rs200, 037, 6r4 etc. How about going even older to the escort mexico, lotus sunbeam, hs chevette and manta 400.

Thanks Harry that was a wonderful review and a blast from my past. I was lucky enough to be working for Audi during the early to mid 80's, drove numerous Quattros and had the rare opportunity to drive one of these (albeit for a short blast) - it's still a phenomenal car now but back in those days it was truly incredible!! I'll never forget that drive or those days, at rally stages almost every weekend and hearing the iconic sound of the turbo 5, reverberating through the forests - spine tingling stuff. Definitely need one in the garage (as you say) - just wish I had half a million in spare change.
We got to see a few of them here in the U.S.A. in the SCCA Pro Rallies. Nothing can beat the unique 5 cylinder sound, the blow off valve chirping, & the ball of flames out the exhaust !!
Ultra cool. Imagine Audi or someone else doing that in todays softened up versions. Also imagine Audi making the present compact RS as racy as this old one... No, now it's all about the amount of electric infotainment you get combined with all sorts of adjustable disco light all over. What a shame. Btw. to me at least, these old school Recaro seats are just so much nicer than the new present day ones. And they look the part! Anyway, a HUGE thanks to Harry for making all these really great car videos, being that the type locally made like this, or the touring videos like the Testarossa goes Sahara etc. I also like the fact, that Harry's videos are for free to watch, and the commercials in them are kept down to a very low level and discrete - not bothering the video it self. In you own quiet way, you are simply the better out there, a quarter mile in front of the competition, incl. the tv-stations. Your videos Harry, will become as legendary as the cars and motorcycles themselves. Thanks again. Kind regards.
Commenting in 2024. Evo reader from the early days, but what come across in Harry's garage is what a total petrol head Harry is. Can there be a higher compliment in this context? I don't think so!
Superb video, content, commentary and enthusiasm - as always. What a great surprise to see the 1984 Sport Quattro - Harry so ably demonstrated the great suspension and steering set up - a car with that awesome stability and that great ride - excellent. I wish cars today had a good ride! (Looking forward to Harry's views on the 10v Quattro!). Cheers Harry.
Hi... The constant smile on your face says everything, so the Audi obviously has the 'grin factor', any car that does that is special, my mini does it for me! Another fantastic video...thank you 😊
I discovered Harry’s garage a little while ago enjoying every post. It’s my happy pill and who can’t be touched by Harry’s joy and enjoyment of cars and bikes. He should be knighted for his knowledge and joy of cars. Thank you Harry and his good lady.
@@Zadster crazy story... "MFS151X A brief history of what was one of the most remarkable cars we ever had. As a few here will know, Dad (McNab) was an ex Jaguar Works Driver and one of the original Ecurie Ecosse line up. He was a complete petrolhead, owning a string of cars that today remain very desirable. Add into that a brief spell as a Ferrari Dealer here in Scotland, and you can imagine that we had a fascinating childhood. One of our family businesses was and remains farming. In those days it took in a lot of hill ground on the way to Oban. Dad could pedal, and generally had the machinery to do it with, which led to many a farmer declining the offer of a lift to the Oban sales. Once and never again… He was always interested in the next thing. The better car. Progress. He didn’t look back at all. So when word of the Quattro was revealed by Motor, or whatever publication it was, he was intrigued. I recall him borrowing a Coupe to try and understand what it was based on. But of course this didn’t help much. So it was bought blind, from I think Ian Skelly in Glasgow. Left Hand drive was a concern, mainly for trade in value, but also the concern that Audi would begin to produce RHD versions. We were assured that there were no plans to do so. It being LHD actually helped my mother, who had suffered a mild stroke during a heart valve replacement. Her left side was slightly weaker than her right and she grew to love the car, being able to change gear with her right hand. And this sums up the remarkable ability and nature of the car. My mum wasn’t a slow driver, but she would happily hop in it and take it to the shops, or drive to Edinburgh. It was comfortable, docile, had light steering and an easy gearbox. The next day my father could take it up to Killin in a fashion that would make Walter Rohrl blush, and come back deeply impressed by its abilities. Nothing stopped it. Narrow tyres and it’s excellent original 4WD system meant that ice and snow were not an issue. We would take to locking the centre diff when pressing on (never the rear diff). That tightened up the roadholding slightly, but then would of course catch you out when you arrived at your destination and forgot to disengage it - its turning circle becoming similar to a ship. Turbo lag was an issue, but as Dan notes, keep it in the mid rev range and you could keep the torque pushing you on. The five pot turbo sound track was addictive. It also happily carried me to school, swallowing a large school trunk on its side into the odd shaped boot. We visited the RAC rally at Donington in one of the first years and felt it wise to hide it, just in case the Audi team found themselves short of parts! In time I passed my test and was eventually allowed to drive it. I adored it. It had such presence and as Dan says felt so planted. Headlights were utterly atrocious and how I managed to live with it for a year in London I have no idea. I messed up once with it - entering a sharp right hander far too quickly in the wet. I lost the back, the front, the back again, and then it just sorted itself out. Dad outbraked himself into a forestry track, but there wasn’t too much damage. We must have had it for close on 15 years. For a while we ran it alongside a Lancia Delta HF 4WD. The difference was stark and the Lancia never found a place in our hearts. In the end we probably did 50-60,000 miles in. It was bought by the director of the local Audi Garage, who gently restored it. It was for sale for a while, alongside a short wheelbase Quattro - I should have hocked my grandmother and bought both. Instead, and very pleasingly Audi UK bought it, and here it is today, still impressing people. Dad died a few years ago, but it remained one of his favourite cars to the end. It was just so capable. The most telling thing was that we would frequently reference it when discussing other cars. Not as good as the Quattro was a familiar refrain. Happy days. "
So so glad I experienced group B, seeing these wonderful machines in the flesh doing what they were built for on a Welsh night stage is still fresh in the memory, Great days, thanks Harry.
Harry, I absolutely adore your videos, but this one hit very hard - I don't know why I can't give it more than one like. Can't wait for the 10v video. But most importantly, please never stop doing what you're doing, Mr Metcalfe.
After owning an Integrale Evo II in the mid-nineties, the Audi appears to handle similarly. It always felt completely alive, always shifting, seeking grip and drive and direction. There was never a dull moment. I'll never forget being taking on my test drive by the dealer, he got me, hook, line... Days to treasure.
Legendary cars...both of them. How great is it that Audi is referencing both of these cars in the styling of their latest offerings? I’m sure most A1 owners will clearly understand what the three nostrils on their bonnet reference...not :D
Absolutely brilliant as ever Harry, I share your excitement for a motoring icon that ignited my passion for cars, that made my weekend, a joy to watch, can't wait for the next instalment, fantastic stuff.
Harry always with superb reviews. This time a little bit more enthusiastic . Loved it. By the way I just checked the current offers in Germany. A few available between 100 -500T. € Ok boys, start saving.
Thanks Harry. That's one of my favorite cars. One of best things about the car is the wonderful sound that the 5 cylinder engine makes. I have a 95 S6 and it's a keeper.
Not that I could ever afford one, but an Audi Sport Quattro has been in my dream garage since it came out (along with a T16, RS200, RS1800, Intergarle and 037)!!
My life is complete. Ever since I had that pack of Top Trumps as a 13yo the Audi Sport Quattro has been my ultimate car dream. Harry has vicariously fulfilled that dream with a wide eyed excitement that borders emotion, for both of us I feel. Modern sports cars are technical masterpieces, faster to 60, top speeds, quicker around circuits......but for real roads and to live the dream this is THE car. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be? Rubbish. Huge thanks for this video Mr Metcalf and for conveying every bit that I always wanted it to have and be. 🙏
This one gets an absolute thumbs up. Awesome car, awesome video. Truly one of my favorite videos that you have put together thus far. Much like an off-road motorcycle, I actually find this car to be beautiful in a way that only a few purpose-built pieces of machinery can claim. Thank you so much for sharing this with us Harry.
Fantastic review ,had tears in my eyes watching , my first proper car was the 1.9 coupe in that red colour , the way the nose rose up when you applied power , such great memories 😀thanks Harry
Loved it Harry. I’m lucky enough to have owned an RS2 with the same character engine. I’m currently running an UR RS3. I’m glad Audi keep the inline 5 turbo for their special vehicles. Nothing sounds better than one on song.
Fantastic car enthusiast's content - amazing. And I like the quick references to archive Autocar/Motor/Car/Evo/Motorsport magazines, and seeing the prices and such - great! Many thanks Harry. Keep up the great work. Don't change. Don't stop!

You used the word privilege, Harry, but it’s our privilege to get to see you driving such glorious machines, the way you describe the experience makes it feel, to me, as if I’m sat alongside you. A superb video!
I see an Audi today and they are good looking, nice cars. But I see these old Quattro models, and they just blow my mind. Absolutely gorgeous! I cannot imagine the impact this cars made in their time! Great video! Thank you!

Harry Metcalfe. Some guy with a farm. Single-handedly putting out better content than BBC and Top Gear. What a legend.
Amazing content. Lets hope no one talks him into going on top gear.
Not quite single-handedly, but great content none the less.
A top gear with Harry, jay leno, and Chris Harris would be epic lol.
shingnosis when it comes to cars all around, Jay Leno would kick that dude sideways.
I appreciate what you are trying to say but he is definitely not just “some guy with a farm” !
I don't get why people would think this car isn't gorgeous. Those boxy 80s 90s euro sports cars are so sexy to me
I've seen Harry road test many many car's, super car's etc, but I've never seen him have a constant grin on his face like he is on this one, he's like a kid at Christmas..!! and why not, I think we all would to. Great stuff.
Indeed, thought the same. I could see him own this one, "for farming purposes". :-)
Yes, his enthusiasm was noticeable in this.
"Wowee!" I'm sure it takes a pretty special car to impress this man.
How could you not have fun driving a Quattro Sport its a true legend and you get that sound no other car ever sounded like a original Quattro and the performance is still good compared to current cars.

Great review of a supreme car, stunning in every way, you failed to mention the 5 cyl sound which is as iconic as the car itself.
Yes, I was surprised that nothing was mentioned about the great straight 5 sound
I hardly watch terrestrial TV now thanks to channels like this. Utterly engaging, informative and ego free. Loving every second. Brilliant!
Another fantastic video...thank you 😊
My favourite video so far, the yellow XJ-S video was previously my favourite. Can't wait to see the 10V quattro video.
He's gonna have over 1M subscribers in no time. Best motoring content on UA-cam.
We all had a big smile on our faces and enjoyed that with you. Lovely ride.
I discovered Harry’s garage a little while ago enjoying every post. It’s my happy pill and who can’t be touched by Harry’s joy and enjoyment of cars and bikes. He should be knighted for his knowledge and joy of cars. Thank you Harry and his good lady.
Almost had a heart-attack when he showed the 2nd Quattro
Pistonheads drove that Ur-Quattro last week, if you read the comments in the forum, that car has a particularly interesting history!

A brief history of what was one of the most remarkable cars we ever had.
Once and never again…
He was always interested in the next thing.
Happy days. "
@@dani18sg That's the one :)
Wonderful era and fantastic car reviewed by a man who knows his stuff cheers Harry 👍🏻
Kinda difficult to imagine a gentlemen who loves Group B before watching this video. Amazing work sir!
You can feel the enthusiasm in every fiber! A legendary car and a great Harry :)
This has always been in my top 5 all time cars. Got REALLY excited when I saw this pop up.
I saw this car at Sebring a little over 10 years ago and it's still one of my all time favorites!
Love to see the Delta S4, RS200, 205 T16, 037, Renault 5 Turbo, Metro 6R4 etc on the channel
Rarely seen someone so happy in a car
It's amazing how much fun you can have watching Harry have an amazing amount of fun. I felt as though I was riding in the car too. Thanks Harry!
Ok boys, start saving.
I am so delighted to have found this channel. What TG and Grand Tour could be now if they just went back to the cars, and spared us the guff.
Considering the cars Harry drives, it says it all when you see the smile when he gets in, top 5 cars, totally agree.
You can build one!
Had an RS1800 totally original in white. Bought it from Ford where it had been a ‘show car’
At 59 years of age I did not realise I liked cars till finding Harry’s channel recently. Best compliment I can think of. Thank you.
Fantastic review ,had tears in my eyes watching , my first proper car was the 1.9 coupe in that red colour , the way the nose rose up when you applied power , such great memories 😀thanks Harry
Best motor channel on UA-cam, absolute gentleman. Thanks
Loved it Harry.
I’m lucky enough to have owned an RS2 with the same character engine.
I’m currently running an UR RS3.
I’m glad Audi keep the inline 5 turbo for their special vehicles.
Nothing sounds better than one on song.
The 6 pot in my A3 sounds mint, sadly stopped making them
Please tell me you still have that rs2
@@tjlovesrachel sadly not, but it went to a very good home.

I have loved this car since the day it was built! This video is a true treat! Thank you Harry! I wish I had one in my garage too!
Fantastic car enthusiast's content - amazing. And I like the quick references to archive Autocar/Motor/Car/Evo/Motorsport magazines, and seeing the prices and such - great! Many thanks Harry. Keep up the great work. Don't change. Don't stop!
Dont think I've seen another car put a smile on harrys face like this one, whilst driving enthusiastically
I love this car so much I bought a TT RS. The engine sounds like moaning ghosts with the turbo in the background you do not need a radio my friend.
28 minutes of absolute joy coming up. If I won the lottery, a Sport Quattro would be my car of choice.
Harry, I love hearing the passion and excitement in your voice about these cars when you are arguably one of the most wheeled man of any and all exotics throughout your magnificent career . . . Thanks for continuing to give us spectacular content in such a magnificent way, have to agree with shingnosis you outshine all others !! Brilliant !! Thank you for sharing your love of cars from the mundane to the sublime with us !! Wonderful stuff !!
yeah just love this audi model just superb wish i owned one
what a beauty this car is
I've never seen Harry so happy, which kinda tells you all you need to know. And God I love that engine note...
You used the word privilege, Harry, but it’s our privilege to get to see you driving such glorious machines, the way you describe the experience makes it feel, to me, as if I’m sat alongside you. A superb video!
It's a rare day when Harry Metcalfe is drooling with so much enthusiasm. This must be a very special car. Thank you Harry. A great review.
3:43 So eloquently put, it made me laugh Harry. Always loved this shape, even in the later Sciroccos.
Watching him thrash that down the back roads, put as big a smile on my face as his. Well done as usual Harry!
I love that I live near Harry and I can imagine seeing him driving these roads. One day I'd hope too see him come past haha keep it up Harry
I see an Audi today and they are good looking, nice cars. But I see these old Quattro models, and they just blow my mind. Absolutely gorgeous! I cannot imagine the impact this cars made in their time! Great video! Thank you!
That's gorgeous, would definitely be in my dream garage!
Absolutley love your reviews. Very detailed and exciting to see.
I remember seeing Tom Hammonds using a dark green one as a tow car at Gurston Down in the mid-80s. Fabulous.
I remember that well :)
I would have liked to see that too. Legend status..
