I don't understand why they had to introduce a separate NCMC card (basically a prepaid card) instead of enabling the tap-and-pay feature of the normal debit card. Things would have been much easier.
I can still see this being a common card across India for metros and in retail stores. As long as bus services are run by local govt, forget using this card for bus service.
Interesting point -in delhi my NCMC card doesn't work on 25% AFC gates. It doesn't work at Balance Enquiry Machines installed at Metro Stations. I think it's just a half cooked project
It’s a common sense. It’s a RuPay card and issuing bank is RBL. Try enabling the online transactions for the card from RBL’s website and the Card should work for your retail purchases. Simply by loading the money from offline to online account isn’t a solution. You have to enable domestic/international/online transactions first. Which are turned off by default for your safety on RBI’s instructions. Millions of citizens have lost billions of rupees in fraud that’s why this option is turned off by default nowadays.
I've been using this card in Bengaluru metro. PIN is provided as part of the welcome kit along with the card. There is also an option to reset the PIN in the app. Only challenge i face is even in offline mode the amount has to be updated on the tapping machine at the metro station unlike the old smart cards which get recharged at the metro gate
Not sure about Bengaluru and other cities, but the Mumbai 1 NCMC card launched by MMRDA is free of charge, only requires filling of a form and a short KYC process, whatever you pay, gets added as balance in your card, so your thumbnail "Should you buy the NCMC?" is misleading
I've been to Japan. There they have Suica and it was amazing. Used it for Metro, Malls, Bus, local shops, vending machines and supermarkets seemlessly across Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Nara.
E Sreedharan wanted one card for metro, local train, bus and water ferry when metro work started in Kerala. This concept is a much needed upgrade required in Kolkata as public uses auto , bus, metro and ferry on Hooghly.
Very informative.Didnt know this exists in India. I think the tech shouldn't be limited to a specific card .A user should be able to use any plastic money across these terminals. Yes there may be varying charges depending on the card (rupay/visa/mc). I saw this in london.
instead of just adopting contactless payments for metro (that would work with cards from all over the world ) they’ve developed this really complicated new standard that seems to combine contactless with an offline metro balance
I have a similar concept of the card in Taiwan, which flawlessly works everywhere. They have integrated with every transaction point and in every corner of the country. I hope the Indian government makes such a roadmap by taking examples from Asian countries like Taiwan, Singapore, japan, and South Korea.thanks
Don't know why it's taking govt to implement it everywhere. Indian railways and Metros already have a good card system just they need to add this card inside the payment gateway.
Because India loves bureaucracy. There’s some contractor who got some hefty commission and some politician who got kickbacks. And in typical fashion, even then nothing works.
Our normal bank debit cards should just introduce an offline wallet. These card should be made to work as NCMC, also you can save these cards in your phone if your phone has built-in NFC
there is no need to introduce an offline wallet, places like milan and london just use contactless payments to operate the gates, the total cost is tallied at the end of the day and charged, if the charge bounces, the card is blacklisted, also works with any card from any country that has contactless
Does it give discount? For example, if you purchased it in Bengaluru, do you get discount in namma metro? If purchased in Delhi, do you get discount in Delhi Metro?
For enabling it across the states, u hv to go to their offices/ ticketing incharge and get access for ur card. It happens everywhere....... very good system to check transactions.
All the coverage is great! But As Journalists Pls raise these questions directly to authorities , what's so difficult for the authority to implement it for the improving people's life! Don't conclude it with inconclusive answers jus lyk the gov!
In Japan, I use Pasmo or Suica IC cards for bus, metro, stores etc. In bangalore, we already have namma metro IC cards. Extend the technology to KSRTC/BMTC buses and develop a tech cash counter or billing machine to accept it all stores or integrate with an app along with QR codes.
I think UPI is the way forward for everything. It's in the name, Universal Payment Interface. It's sophisticated, safe, robust, real time, flawless and works across platforms. It's the first and only thing that India is ahead of the rest of the world.
What is required are pay as you go and daily, weekly , monthly and yearly passes based on zones. Each city could have multiple zones ranging in varying fixed zone prices so if traveling within anywhere in same zone , it should not cost more than the assigned zone price.
About using the NCMC card in shops and retail places. The way it works with the Pune metro card is that there is a "online" card balance and a separate "offline" chip balance. The online card balance is the one that is used in retail shops and the chip balance gets used at the metro station. I have verified that this works with my card and with my friends card. I have also used this in Bengaluru metro and confirmed that it works there as well. Please make this note in the video
NCMC card is a tried and tested system across the world. Unfortunately we intend to build Rome in a day. We should first increase adoption by syncing up all the metro systems in the country. Only then expand to other modes/supermarkets etc with 10% cash back 😊. The savings and popularity will then drive government agencies to implement it quickly.
Though India is the largest software hub outside the US, it lacks in adopting new technology(especially in govt dept) because the governments are not willing to do. If you go to cities like Singapore and Dubai they have implemented this one card way back in 2007. For example if you visit any government website you can feel how user-unfriendly is it. The website are designed in such a way for most things the common man should go through an agent.

There is also an option to reset the PIN in the app. Only challenge i face is even in offline mode the amount has to be updated on the tapping machine at the metro station unlike the old smart cards which get recharged at the metro gate
Well done Deccan Herald. Always well presented ❤
Such a big hassle
It should be as simple as TFL Oyster card.
Thank you DH for explaining.
kudos to the journalism!
This card works in retail outlets with both tap and with pin seamlessly just like any other debit card. I have been using this card since a while now.
Bro but it's is showing increase your limit but I have full limit to it
in mumbai sbi card u can recharge only on metro station
You can recharge it online after first recharge
U can use this card in super market but only in authorised markets like more reliance to buy non alcoholic stuffs online.worked in big basket as well.
I stand with this NCMC 👍
Very informative.Didnt know this exists in India. I think the tech shouldn't be limited to a specific card .A user should be able to use any plastic money across these terminals. Yes there may be varying charges depending on the card (rupay/visa/mc). I saw this in london.
What's the journalist name? She is so refreshing in today's stale journalism era.. So happy to see the way she have covered this story
Why is NCMC card is being shown as RBL card only ? 22 Banks in India issue NCMC cards. This is misleading to a certain extent
instead of just adopting contactless payments for metro (that would work with cards from all over the world ) they’ve developed this really complicated new standard that seems to combine contactless with an offline metro balance
Surprisingly a very good video. I believe there a lot of details that need to be ironed out in NCMC card usage. We will get there soon...
I think the one nation one card would work but one nation one payment method would work more like UPI integrate everything with UPI it will work
Thank you for this very important coverage 🙏
Hope they implement this soon in buses too and have credit card type option too so as to not worry about recharging
@@AnoujRajput even better then 👍. Here, people generally feel insecure with contactless payments although there's a user defined daily limit
I like your journalism please put like this videos❤
The kind of good journalism
This sounds fascinating and convenient, something similar to MRT card in Singapore.
Does it give discount? For example, if you purchased it in Bengaluru, do you get discount in namma metro? If purchased in Delhi, do you get discount in Delhi Metro?
No connection from where you have bought it from. It depends if particular metro is offering discount on NCMC card or not.
For enabling it across the states, u hv to go to their offices/ ticketing incharge and get access for ur card. It happens everywhere....... very good system to check transactions.
Seen it at Dubai. But never heard about it!
Govt must advertise about it.
Just a suggestion. It would've better to also involve the NCMC team to get better clarity. It would also help in educating the people.
I got the NCMC card from PNB, but its been a headache since...
I went to Delhi Metro for service creation, still it doesn't work at AFC🤦🤦♀️
Is it working in Bangalore metro?
PNB Debit card cum NCMC card not working in Bangalore metro for me.
@@sharath_n I live in Delhi and isn't working for me in Delhi metro😅
Very good made video
I'm sure all the issues will be resolved as the govt is proactive
Why the hassle of yet another card when we already have a robust mobile based UPI?
Good coverage.
Did decan herald pay namma metro? Shooting isn't allowed inside
