  • Bengaluru water crisis | Sewage Treatment Plants | Recycled Water
Bengaluru's water crisis is peaking. The city is short 500 million litres of water per day. In such a situation, an important solution to consider is the use of treated water. Bengaluru has already constructed 33 sewage treatment plants across the city, each one of which is responsible for specific areas of the city. Treated water from these plants is being redirected into the lakes of the city and its neighbours, like Kolar, Chikkaballapura and Anekal.
But how does a Sewage Treatment Plant work? And how is the treated water helping us solve this crisis? Rukmini Ravishankar explores.
    #bengaluruwatercrisis #sewagetreatmentplant #kcvalley #hnvalley #Vrishabhavathivalley #kolar #chikkaballapura #water #stp

@@valeshmathias he is saying about his society. Can you say every society or household uses treated water for toilets ? Just wait. @@PrasanthRaj57 I think he misunderstands treated water and potable water and is blaming the society for wasting treated water on things like gardening.
I agree that future technology would enable us to use treated water for household use, including cooking (probably already happening in developed countries) but at the moment, this is the best we can do.

@@rethrajwatering plants is still a waste. Singapore treats the water so that we can drink them again. That is true recycling of water and it is needed across India. We must shift our mindset that drinking recycled water is bad for health. In fact recycled water is more pure than borewell/municipal water. It is also how astronauts on the ISS survive.

Should we conclude that the BWSSB STP's are not good enough?
One aspect that you didn't cover is how much sewage is let go by each treatment plant without any treatment into the Raja Kaluves or rivers. This is important since many of the STPs were planned when the population wasn't as dense & the inflow is now greater than the processing capabilities of the STP.
Lastly...while sending water to nearby towns...it is important that the passage length of 10's of km is utilised for further natural treatment of the water. Sending them through concrete canals doesn't help. 🙏🏾

If the treated water from Govt. run STPs is being sent to lakes to recharge groundwater then that same water could be used by the farmers to water their crops through borewells. If crops are dying by using this STP treated water directly then would it not contaminate the groundwater too? Or is it that ground percolation helps in additional filtration of the treated water? 🤔 Confused!!

Quite informative and useful. While the problems in using it for agriculture is covered well, we understand that the quality of treatment is much below that it is planned for; which indicates that without proper treatment, the water is pumped out.
In Israel over 60% of agricultural needs are understood to be taken care by the treated water. In our case, we consume 85% of fresh water only for agriculture. This needs to be reduced and as it is covered in the video, recharging of ground water needs to be addressed not only through lakes in cities but also elsewhere through desilting.

    1. Each flat should have separate water meter. This will help us increase water charges drastically above Avg water usage of Bangalore.
    2. Govt should make sure STP treatment plants are working properly. Many case STP plant is just for name sake using money power and muscle power won't operate those.

Bangaluru was once a calm green garden city , after the unplanned growth of city and illegal constructions and destroying and polluting lakes and water bodies such a consequence of water shortage is there .
And this city is overated and hyped to be called as Silicon Valley of India, Tech City ,IT Capital. 😅
On what basis, this city can be compared or called as Silicon Valley 😅
The water which is being recyled from sewage can be seen with full dirt ,plastic ,waste materials dumped irresponsibly in sewage lines .
One should as citizens blame and are equally accountable for what the condition of the city is today .

All Municipality in India are corrupt. Every municipality knows what is the problem but every time short term solution is given instead of working on long term and they there would be Commission in all the work which needs to be completed. Then how can we accept we would get full fledge solution for it. . In Blore, water distress call has been there since 2016. BBMP Never cared about this. Firstly every house should get water pipe line connection so that Individual house doesn't depend on borewell or water tanker. Then BBMP can decide which area can get cuvery water or which are area can get water from borewell if required. Then there wont be any exploitation on underground water from individual or water tanker. Govt should focus building this infrastructure. Then only water problem can solved. And other thing is constructing more and more STP and STP of high grade so that water can reused for drinking purpose. Current STP in blore are not upto that level. They are only meant for Industrial purpose. They was one initiative from Citizen called as K100 Citizens’ Waterway. Govt should be encouraged to have more water ways So that water problem can be solved permanently. But for this govt needs to dedication to complete the work. problem with our Karnataka govt is that, they give lot of promise on paper but execution is always zero. None of the govt from Karnataka has dedication to complete the work in timely manner either it is BJP or congress.

Yes sewage water is filtered to such a degree that it can be used for drinking. There should be sensors kept at exit points of these STP's which will monitor the levels of Nitrogen and Phosphorus and warn the plant if it goes over the limit.

Instead of Sewage alone, try collecting, filtering and boiling Airconditioner / dehumidifier water and adding alkaline to desired pH in every home. Ensure bird meshing around the same. This is exactly how Israel carries out drip irrigation for greenhouse plants . Every house with functional air conditioners and dehumidifiers could try piped collection of condensed water. A one and a half hour collection of this water from a single ac on mode dehumidifier provides 5 to 8 litres of treatable condensed water. ( Ensure bird avoidance meshing on outdoor split ac units)

Bbmp and government come out with novel projects costing thousands of crores. Why don’t we adapt Singapore model who treat and purify water beyond our tertiary treatment in most stps. Ultra purified water is also used for drinking. Some of you may recall bill gates photo of drinking ultra purified water. Singapore does not have ground. Water and depends mostly on rain water and the balance importing from Malaysia. Mr. Incharge minister for Bengaluru should start looking at what is being done by a city almost equal in population and area to Bengaluru. Singapore has one authority for all water related issues unlike Bengaluru where many agencies, always engaged in blamegame with one another on city. problems..

This treated water should be used for toilets, car wash etc . Why shall common man outside Bengaluru use this treated water ? Also it should be properly checked by growing vegetables and fish to check toxicity. Only solution is rain water harvesting to ensure not a single drop goes waste.

In reality "Taking ownership of private water tankers and imposing fixed price based on capacity" is a big joke! I am paying double the price. When I asked the water provider he said "If you want, go and buy from somewhere else. We have invested 10L on the tractor and water tank!! why should we listen to the govt"🤣 Govt literally can't control this water mafia just like real estate and other things in the city. While giving permission to build houses, layouts the Govt don't impose rainwater harvesting and STPs rules. Now putting a fine on people who washed their car!
