- Harbor freight 6x26 knee Milling machine 40939 REVIEW some set-up and spindle time on my new harbor freight milling machine, www.rockntv1.com/2014/01/40939... I am glad to report of my satisfaction with the machine. While the hf40939 mill is not at the same level of build quality of Bridgeport mill in any way, the harbor freight vertical bench milling machine will test your machining abilities as soon as you get it home.. I'm seriously thinking about getting this machine one day, but I'm nervous 😅; the Grizzly machine starts at 6k up to 8k but it's it really tasty much better?
Thanks for reviewing this machine, good video!
PS; for the money, this machine might be a hidden gem; mini mills cost this much, but they do not have the power nor the weight. That said, I'll gladly pay 1k or a little more extra to get better surfaces and fit and finish.
Thanks again for the video!
Cant speak to the quality of the grizly, it does have x power feed and green paint. my stand is way better,, lol When it comes to parts they may be better, more easy to get,, dunno, i make everything.
You video is good, I agree with you, I bought and old bridgeport on ebay 3 years ago. Because i thought it was a great deal. When I got it home, the y axis slides had about .016" dip in wear, the table was down .024 in the middle of the ways. A few other things were wore out as well. I had access to a vey large newer milling machine where I worked. I remilled the table and ways, I remilled the entire knee. It took almost a year and a half after I had it in my workspace to get things straightened out. Then I had to regrind my spindle taper. It was a ton of work and and I lost tons of my own time. I needed a machine when I bought mine, but I wasn't able to use it for a year and a half. If you need a machine to use now, don't buy the old wore out machine, buy a new cheapie and use it make some money with it and buy something later.
I agree
Excellent video.
Thanks for sharing! I have a similar machine and I did more than I ever expected to do.
Cheers!
thanks 4 watchin
hope all is well ;-)
@@ROCKNTV1 Still alive but like everyone else facing new difficulties! What can you do? "Keep movin' Keep breathin'"!
Thanks for sharing I have one on the way all the best from John in Texas
good luck with yours john
hope all is well ;-)
Watched your video a few times leaning towards getting the same machine looks like best value for the money, thanks David
David, these milling machine are now 1900$ + shipping this alone would have me looking more seriously at options.
hope all is well ;-)
I love it. Thinking of one myself. Love your vid and proper attitude. Chinese machines power my shop and great things have come out of there. Peace
thanks for watching
hope all is well ;-)
Thanks for the info. You certainly did your homework.
lemme know if I left out some info about the 40939 mill you need.
hope all is well ;-)
John, a reminder of what you already know, is you can just grind out the area near the gouge on the mill, and weld it up, then smooth it down. Thanks. Good video, great attitude. Waiting for your 10 second video on what you can't do, Ha!
:-) thanks for watching
Mine should be delivered 7/3. If this is like everything I've bought from Harbor Freight, I'll have to tear it apart and fix the mistakes so it will work like it should. This is the second video I've watched of yours. Going to check out your other 6x26's. Thanks for putting in the time to make the video!
thanks 4 watching
Love the way you say cah-bides, thanks for the informative, straight to the point video.
Thanks for watching, hope to help, thumbs up apreciated
hope all is well ;-)
I think i may go this route other than a worn out bridge port.. my budget for machine only is 2k.. a 2k bridgeport around here in pa is pretty rough
was my thoughts exactly
I have got the X2 mini mill. WAY SMALLER THAN YOURS. I upgraded plastic gears to a belt drive. I hear what you're say'n bro. You gotta role with what you can afford. Hell even if I could afford a bridgeport, thats way to much money for a hobby mill. good on 'ya bro. Nice job
thanks for watching, is you tube borking the comments?
try paste wax to fight rust I use it on my cast iron table saw and drill press the plus of not useing oil saw dust or chips do not stick to table
thanks for the tip
hope all is well ;-)
Hello! Checking in to see how you like the machine after all these years? Has it been as accurate as you would like it to be? Easy to maintain? This is still the cheapest smallest knee mill out there and the power & rigidity you get for the dollars seems to still be the best. Im in the market for a new mill soon.
Hi Joe, I do belive i could go on for hours on the Harbor Freight 6x26 bench milling machine and its pro and cons. I think i layed out pretty extensivly in the vid what you get. How ever here in 2021 the price has gone up, yet i'm, sure the build quality, parts availibility, and sentiment of the fork trucker during shipping has plummited. That said, If you are, or have machining experience on better quality milling machines, you may be disapointed, or you may better be able to deal with the idiocincracies ? of the chineese miller. You wont keep a bulb in the light. You will learn to deal with motor start capacitors and cheezy on/off switches. You will learn to count .125 per rev on feeds rather than .100 you will need a stand or a bench with a hole in it. You will tram the head nod with shims. You will calm your feed rate due to niose in the spindle sheave. If none of that has yet to deter your home machine shop projects, you will commence to mod the travels in x,y,z, lol. I do have a play list > ua-cam.com/play/PLhIFDVyYdJHY9V4PXfC63OIRFprrKIL1Z.html < this covers my last 7 years to date, PLZ dont use this on your site with out a link back here. Thanks,
John
hope all is well ;-)
Also, what type 240v connector did you use on the mill electrical cable and the wall socket?
oi, i forget 250/30p ?
if that little spot at 7:15 were really an issue for someone, you can always fill in little voids like that with some brazing rod then machine/grind over that.
yes but i wont bother
Thanks for the review. I am also considering this mill. How much space would you say it needs in the workshop?
5 square feet , min
hope all is well ;-)
Could you share your mill stand design and construction details? I've begun my own with 3/16"x3"x3" angle iron, but all with whom I converse/consult say 1/8"x3"x3" is the way to go. I am very conflicted. Your input would be greatly appreciated

where you been man?

Hey Rockintv1, I know it's been a while since you posted this video. But I am thinking about getting one of these and would like to know if you still like this knee mill???
I like it for what it is,
Man youre accent is awsome are you a new yorker ? Im from an old town in west Yorkshire very near york or old york in England but we have crappie accents im just starting to get in to model engineering and i think im gonna get a big dog lathe , i saw your unboxing of your big dog and to me they seem the best bang for your buck, anyway keep poasting your video's as straight talking is the best talking .
@joseph is youtube deleting my comments? thanks for watching
I HAVE THE GRIZZLY G3102 THE SHAFT IS ABOUT 36 3/4: LONG. I WOULD THINK IF YOU ARE RIGHT HANDED YOU MAY WANT THE MOTOR ON THE RIGHT SIDE FOR THE POWER FEED. IF YOU WANT TO GO TO CNC, YOU MAY WANT THE MOTOR ON THE LEFTAND JUST REVERST THE SHAFT. THE PROBLEM I SEEN WAS THE END CAPS ARE NOT REVERSABLE ON MY MACHINE. SO I ASSUME ONE WOULD HAVE TO REVERSE THE WHOLE CARRAGE ASSY.
replace the 40939 x lead screw with a g3102, and end cap, add power feed. thanks for watching, is you tube borking the comments?
It's been a few years, are you still using this machine? Are you happy with it? Are you doing ok?
yes, power switch has calfed, the belts have seriouse lumps at the splices, the motor end cap bells/ bearing holders, needed some tapping around with the soft hammer to find centers, as theyt are no where near the quality of a baldor or dayton motor.
So how is the Tramming?
good, shows on the dti in video
Out of the crate how accurate is the machine?
mine was not bad
12:00
allthread rod is soft, wouldn't be good for a lead screw. it would work, for a time, but it would wear out pretty quick and you'd have to buy another.
not allthread, 1x8 acme thread
Is this machine the same as the Baileigh VM-626-1? It is a 1/3 of a price. One has the specs for 220v and the other is 110v
I dont know, this mill is 220v
@@ROCKNTV1 Do you think that the harbor freight motor can be wired at 110v? I totally believe that they are the same machine with a different paint job.
not likly, but unsure,,,
do you still have this mill? how has it worked out your you?
still flingin chips
Have a harbor freight mini lathe. I understand what you're saying about the price / condition / quality. No it's not a high-quality American machine, but you're not paying high quality American prices. I'm like you, I just work with this limitations, and it does just fine. Couldn't ask for anything more for $600
Right, thanks for watching
you just do with what you can buy, a 10.000 dollar machine is great but only few people have that kind of money for a mill, my machines are never super clean but I do use an old vacuum cleaner when im done with the machine to clean it
I have been saving up for a milling machine for 2 years now. I called bigdog about the metal master mill as a match to my bigdog mini lathe, but they never called back, It was then that I looked hard at these 6x26 and the 40939 mill. So many mini lathe and hobby machine sites have photo's of this class of machine with useless mods and mis information, I thought I would give the facts on video. pound for pound and dollar, I think i got the most machine for the money.
ROCKNTV1 Would love to have a machine like that and a gagage like yours, I think you got a nice mache for the money you payed, I hope you can take some of the runout of, but as long als you know it you can do something about it or at least know what its doing and why it could be a little off
happymark1805
good to ear you mark. hope al ist well, I fear not much can be done with the few tenths in the spindle, neither bearing nor grind provide and absolute outcome, slimming my options, however cutter compensation at touch off will give an experience operator +/- .001 or close, better then most machining jobs not government:)
I live in Georgia now.. wow everything rusts. I have a Taige Laith and it's the devil to keep cancer off the metal. I'm using pricy gun oil now.
doesnt a taige have an aluminum bed?
How big of endmill and face mill can you go? And how much xyz travel
3/4 4 flute end mill biggest i have. Used mostly for ruffing steel, works good. Biggest face mill I have is 3" 4 carbide, on steel it is a bit large as it wants to kick the table off the machine unless locked up solid, a vise like this --> ua-cam.com/video/tHDg4BTkIZc/v-deo.html adds helpfull weight.
That is a rough New England accent for sure. Lol.. But then again you probably wouldn't like My Southern accent any better. It's heavier than his... lol.... found out about the machine. That's what counts.. as far as those casting problems..I have a Grizzly Lathe... same thing... Chinese is Chinese and if a guy's gonna nitpick it then he needs to spend 5-8 times the money and buy an American ,German , Swiss, or Japanese machine.... I can buy a used CNC center at an auction for those prices..
wHO r You talking at??
" ah'm yea " LMFAO
yeh ;-)
2:37... I'm sorry, your Brown and what now? :D :D That's one hell of an accent... Good vid!
shap
This machine is not considered a ( mini ) mill. its a small mill but not a mini mill. type in mini mill in your browser and you will see what a ( mini ) mill actually is. No sarcasm intended.
I think the term is relative if one has run much larger milling machines. Some call them vertical bench knee mill.
Check out www.kinzers.com/don/MachineTools/Grizzly_G1004/ for ideas adapting power feed.
Also there is a guy on the yahoo 6x26 with pics that made an adapter to fit the lead screw. You got a lathe, you can do it.
Great vids
hi, I have seen that page, here, www.rockntv1.com/2014/01/40939-6x26-mini-knee-mill-review.html I out line the measurements of the 40939 mill In effort to source these parts off the shelf from the grizz 6x26 mill
too many ahm's ...one more an my heads gonna pop !
TRY MAKING A VIDEO STEVE, THEN YOU WOULD ACCTUALY BE A CONTRIBU TATER TO THE YT COMMUNITY INSTEAD OF JUST A UA-cam /USER
dude, the best thing you can do with that machine is go buy some insurance on it, then set it on fire. Harbor freight is good place to buy gloves......but not precision machines.....wow, your even telling us the crappy workmanship in this mill. I hope their smarter people up there in New England!
what did you expect for 1300 delivered ua-cam.com/play/PLhIFDVyYdJHY9V4PXfC63OIRFprrKIL1Z.html
