  • The Harbor Freight Mini Mill is an inexpensive means for anyone wanting to enter the field of machining. This vertical mill machine is a wonderful entry level machine. In this video I show the steps I go through to unpack and setup this recently purchased machine. I also point out a few issues I had. Let me know what you think in the comments below. Big tip, never use a punch to clear the hole that mounts it. Use drill bits and step up to the size you need, your just asking to break off a mounting ear. Next clean any and all grease of of both lead screws ( X and Y axis) use good grease on lead screws. Later check to see what your back lash is. Put the R8 adapter for drill chuck after cleaning all oil and grease off of it, in the freezer for about 30 min. Clean and degrease drill chuck head. Heat the hole area with small propane torch. Tap in the R8 chuck adapter. Don't beat the hell out of it. Set aside vertical. As it comes to room temperature it's together. As a Machinist with over 30 years of experience a proper clean and set up will have you a good little mini mill for some time. I have one of those little Mills. After it's all mounted and ready to go. Do a proper bearing break in on it before using it. Turn it on with NO tooling on it at medium speed and just let it run for 30 to 60 minutes. Even seen people run it for 2 hours and very the speed. Have fun with your mini milling machine, they are just like Legos. 3 Axis digital read outs really add to it. Many on line vendors sell them.
    Have fun, good video.

      Why don't you make a tutorial explaining all the things you need to do to prep this machine properly for it's first use😮

    For the price, it's a good machine. I got the same model; the back draw is the tremendous noise from the bad gears. Ear protection is a must, or rebuild it with a belt drive and a 600-watt motor.

      The belt drive conversion has been purchased from Little Machine Shop. Time is my enemy.

    Great video. I had a very similar experience. Set aside plenty of time for creating a workbench, cleaning, and setup. It's a journey not a destination. =D

    I heard if you're looking for a quality milling machine you need one with a lot of cast iron. he told me the heavier it is the better it will be.
    I'm really liking what I'm seeing here for a milling machine.

    Not sure the extent of your initial cleanup but to me I need to take the unit apart to clean the dovetails and X Y screws as they are all gummy. Nobody seems to show a disassembly to really get all the gunk out..

    • @GenosGizmos
      @GenosGizmos  3 роки тому

      I spent hours cleaning the packing grease off this unit. Hours. And you are right, I really should do a complete disassembly to clean under the bed. I have a major squeak in mine. Keep an eye out for future videos about this unit. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching.

    LIFTING: Yep, I already have a bad back. Live in an area where my closest friend is 20 miles away. Solution when I need to lift from the floor to the bench? Harbor Freight lift table, wheel it over to what I have to move and lift. Get it on table then go to where it needs to go. IT’s hydraulic so my foot pumps it up. Easy Peasy.

    Just a tip, its a harbor freight machine, plug it in and make sure it works before spending the hour it takes to clean it up and assemble it. Just sayin’, why clean it up just to ship it back?

      ALWAYS a good tip! That's normally our go to as well, especially if we've purchased tools that need to leave our workshop. Thanks for the reminder!

    I can’t figure out how to loosen the slide, working table, and spindle. Not sure why everyone on UA-cam skips over the initial set up 🙁

    • @GenosGizmos
      @GenosGizmos  3 роки тому +2

      I am not sure I understand. Are the slide adjustment screws too tight? I don't know why your unit isn't sliding. That was not an issue with my machine. The spindle is simple and uses the spindle draw bar and the proper wrench. Be sure to only use a rubber or plastic mallet when tapping on the spindle or taper nut. Read the instructions well.
      I really don't know if I am being of any help or not, and I apologize for that. I took a class from a friend of mine who has spent over 3 decades as a machinist for GM. I still have troubles figuring things out and I am always asking for advice. I may not be the guy to give you the advice you need. But, I will be happy to point you in the right direction if I can.

  • @stephanedibo8167

    Hi Guy, why have you chosen a mini drill machine instead of a Big one though you have enough place in your workshop and at what Time ones should purchase a Big one...i am planning to become a hobbyist machinist. Thanks

    • @GenosGizmos
      @GenosGizmos  Рік тому

      I apologize for not responding sooner. Why did I choose a mini-mill versus a full size mill? I think that is what you are asking. Truthfully, I was in a hurry to get to milling for some small projects. I have a full size mill that needs a lot of work and someday I hope to get it fixed and operating. The full size mill needs a new motor, as well as a controller. The cost to repair the full size mill was going to be in the thousands of dollars. I needed a quick way to proceed with the work I was doing at the time. Someday I will have the full on machine shop, but for now I am making do. And no, I do not have the space for much more. It's crazy how fast you can fill up an empty space.

      @@GenosGizmos it most certainly will if you want to learn,it's alot to it but the more you do it the better you will get,and when you get your eyes calibrated to doing it you'll be able to make almost anything you can dream up,it's a good feeling to know you have the skill to make things other people couldn't dream of making,you'll get there just start simple and don't give up
