- The City and County of Honolulu revealed there are 40,457 vehicles with expired registration on Oahu and 73% of those, or 29,618 vehicles, have not been registered in the last five years.

The amount it costs to register your vehicle is robbery! $5 or $10 at most. Maybe even $17. We pay taxes on the car we buy, we pay to register it, we pay to smog it, we pay for all this dumb 💩 just to drive it. Meanwhile the roads are 💩 asf. Not even well maintained. They want our cars suitable for the road yet the roads aren’t suitable for our cars

Costs of registration should never be more than $5. Registering our cars doesn’t do squat! They’re not keeping the roads maintained, they’re not covering us, they’re not doing 💩
This is one indicator that we are in a recession lots of repo too, I mean this past week in my neighborhood around 5 cars towed. WE ARE STRUGGLING!

The safety inspection is a hangup too. Once it expires, you cannot pay your registration... Not online or in person. So you gotta get the safety check first, go pay registration in person, then go back and have the safety check completed. It's humbug so people just don't do any of it.
Lower the registration fee. I bet more would be registered. People can afford. I can tell you right now if hawaii looked into wat the states of vehicle registration cost. My sister move to Vegas and her registration for her toyota sienna in vegas is a little over $100 and the roads there are nicer. Back home on oahu her registration for her sienna was almost $500 while the roads are horrible. Something wrong yea????

county needs too have a forgivness plan so people can register their
vehicles again and or sell them. Locals can not sell cars cause of back

yeah it doesnt, you have to go get a failed saftey (with the reason for a fail is that you dont have a current registration). then take that failed saftey inspection paper to DMV, pay the registration tax and take the registration paper bacjk to inspector and get passed saftey inspection. is dumb

Those fees are nuts! I just paid $130 to register my 2019 Toyota 4Runner in South Dakota.
What about vehicles owned by military? They pay zero registration, sorry only $25 a year compared to $500/year I pay.

Auto registration goes to state and city. There's state fee, state weight tax, beau fee, county fee, county weight tax. The reason for so many vehicles with expired tags is this is expensive. Time for officials to realize cost of living in Hawaii is the highest in the country and start lowering the cost.

They don't and you're correct. Most of those cars are sitting in yards. The owners are just too ignorant to realize they must surrender the plates. If those cars ever go back on the road, the registration fees will be in the thousands of dollars.

Registration by weight is robbery. Other states you can get your car registered for 2 years less than $90. Average cost here $300-$600 per year. That’s wild 🤬
Many states actually enforce their traffic laws. Try driving an unregistered car in CA, WA, GA, OR TX and see what happens.

Lived in Hawaii for 20 years always remembered paying high registration fees for my Dodge ram 1500. I think I paid like 400 to 500 a year the weight of the truck cost more. Move to Florida in 2013 that same truck I registered it for $87. Seems like things haven't changed in Hawaii.
Reminder to contest every red light camera citation you receive. They c&c is banking you’ll just pay. Don’t pay. Contest it. Inundate the system with cases of suspect red light camera violations, and watch the c&c drop the charges because it’ll cost them too much.
They need to hold those vehicle owners accountable. As for fixing and maintaining the roads, that is a governmental incompetence problem and mismanagement of funds. Those supposed 40k vehicle fees would not make a difference when there are a million registered vehicles here. The politicians and government entities need to also be held accountable.

Gee, lots of cars are so brazened about the registration, yet they haven't done anything. So are officers giving tickets on speeders, moving violation, drunk driving if they have expired registrations? What about on meter readers? They could probably walk at any beach, mall or parking garage and pick a couple up and for each ticket/registration or year expired, double the fine.
Registration prices in Hawaii is ridiculous!!!! For some it's either eat, have a roof over our heads, or pay a rip off price that's not going towards fixing our roads but the pockets of greedy crooks

Actually, car registration is double billing . Residents pay taxes, and federal government always gives funding . For road maintenance and building .Some states are finally being sued to stop this illegal double billing . Vermont was letting any state register your car there and they charge half the amount as other states.

It’s highway robbery in Hawaii! I moved to Texas 2 years ago and shipped my truck after paying $570 for registration! Just got done paying my registration here in Texas and it only costed me $70 a $500 difference! It’s just ridiculously expensive and then you factor in cost of living, inflations , fuel costs etc..How the hell can ppl afford to pay for vehicle registration ?? Smh
