He absolutely is. I've seen the musical somewhere in the region of 10 or 11 times in both the West End and in New York and he's definitely the best Javert out of any I've seen (and most have been excellent)
That's at least partially because Javert and Valjean are based on the same historical person. So they are two sides of the same coin and both highly sympathetic and flawed at the same time.
Phillip Quast is an Australian classically trained singer. He is hands down on the most brilliant performers. He plays Javert in les Mes this the 10th Anniversary special with the ultimate cast. You have to watch the entire show!
One of my favorites from the musical is "The Confrontation." It's where Javert, Quast's character, finally recognizes Jean Valjean, the man he swears by stars to catch.
He is technically a “bad guy” in the play, but gets a huge applause at the end when he takes his bow. Actually pretty common for musical antagonists. Jud from Oklahoma! often gets a similar reaction because his songs are so powerful. Would be worth a watch of the Oklahoma the original London cast “Lonely Room” and “Poor Jud is Dead”.
I think he is much more complex than being labeled either a good guy or a bad guy even technically. If you want true bad guys look no further than the Thénardier's.
In the story he's a policeman who's chased an escaped prisoner for decades in the pursuit of what he considers justice when in reality the man he's chasing isn't actually a villain. The realisation shatters his world and he can't cope with the new reality he's found himself in.
Philip Quast, hands down, without a doubt is the best Javer I have heard and watched. There is a film version of Les Miserables but Russel Crowe in this role delivers a very disappointing vocal performance.
For the love of God, don't watch the movie if you like this song. At least don't watch it first, watch the 10th or the 25th anniversary concerts beforehand, so you know how the songs are SUPPOSED to sound. 25th - 10th - Movie would be my recommended watch order. Just my two cents.
Philip Quast is awesome as Javert. just watch 10th anniversary concert. i think it's on UA-cam. Even if you watch it without context it has some text narration to fill the gaps and the songs are structured in a way that most of the story conveyed through singing. Movie is good for context (even if it loses some from the story itself), but it's filming process was, at best, unfortunate. The singing is just bad, even good singers sound bad.
Far as I'm concerned, the 10th anniversary concert is the best iterations of this musical (the 25th anniversary concert is a close second - it has a better Javert, imo, but not as good a Valjean, and I prefer some of the side characters in the 10th anniversary edition). Both concerts have basically every song in order, with a few bits of text to provide any missing context for the following song. The overwhelming majority of the story is told through the songs though, so you're really not missing anything by watching the anniversary editions. I would recommend either of those over the movie. Javert (the character singing this song) is the bad guy; a cop chasing down an ex-con named Jean Valjean, who broke parole in order to avoid the stigma of having been in prison. His crime? Stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving nephew. He got 5 years hard labour for the theft, and another 14 for multiple escape attempts.
Alfie boe in the 25th anniversary is too belty and has too powerful of a voice for valjean. This is why colm wilkinson is the definitive valjean. Valjean's voice is supposed to bring out the raw emotions of the character as much as possible and not just belt everything out. This is especially true in "bring him home". The whole point of the song is valjean is praying for a SLEEPING Marius. He practically should be whispering. The song should be gentle and soothing, and a booming voice like alfie boe's isn't gonna do it justice. Besides, the song was literally created for colm wilkinson. The creators of the show stumbled upon him practicing his falsetto and decided to write the song as his voice was perfect for it. Noone has even come close to colm's delivery of it. So although alfie boe is an excellent singer and a very good valjean in his own rights, he just doesn't portray valjean as well as the original valjean, colm wilkinson.
How lovely to see you react to the iconic Philip Quast. Les Mis on stage is something you should see AT LEAST once in your life. Quast will always be THE Javert 🖤
Even though they are not going through the motions acting, the anniversary edition are still extremely powerful. You really don't lose that much. The talent of the voices is enough
I saw the movie first. If you do see the movie, go into it with the understanding that the main characters were played by actors who tried their best to match the original vocalists' performances, not professional singers who got into a Hollywood film. Many bash their inability to measure up but I praise their ability to get as close as they did, I loved it.
It wasn't actors's fault, the filming process itself was incredibly flawed and simply set to get bad performances. They did the same thing with "Cats" and made it even worse.
Well, Hugh Jackman at least does have a musical theatre background - I saw him perform live myself in The Boy From Oz, but he's done several other productions too. Honestly, apart from Russell Crowe dragging things down at every turn, I thought the cast did a great job considering the circumstances! Still, when I'm in a Les Mis mood, I'm almost always gonna come back to the 10th anniversary ❤
I recomend a good stage production over the movie. If you don't shed a few tears of joy, you have no heart. If you don't shed a few tears of sorrow, you have no soul.
I want you to still see this production live sometime, it will change your life. I hate to say however, that you will never, ever hear again the genius & perfection that is Philip Quast in this same quality as you hear now. He is the best, and will ever be at that time the best that will ever be. Love it!
I saw it (not this cast) live when I was about 17. Cried like a 6-year-old with ice cream on their shoes. The full version, the "Dream Cast" concert here: ua-cam.com/video/MmMSLjl98yE/v-deo.html
If you intend to watch Les Misérables I highly recommend watching a stage production, or a recording of one, rather than the movie. Movie adaptions of musicals are notoriously and continously inferior.
Javert is not technically the bad guy. He was born in a prison and has a lack of remorse for criminals. He chases the main criminal without seeing that he changed and has reformed himself into a God fearing man. He is a victim of his limited views. That is why I love les miserables. You feel sympathetic to everyone because there is no clear picture of who is in the wrong.
For something completely different, react to Master of the House. The 10th anniversary version is great. Also not much context needed bc it's a character introduction song
There is also a clip of Philip Quast playing Juan Peron in Evita and he is every bit as brilliant in it. PQ is just so good in everything he does. Also, if you look into the darkness when he goes to his chair, his cast mates reach out to pat him after he held the last note around 18 seconds. Remarkable!
I love this song. One of my favorites from Les Miz. I also love Empty Chairs. So poignant. You may chuckle at a meme I saw. It was a pic showing about eight of the insurrectionists posing in the Capitol Building on 1/6/21, including the guy with the bull horn hat. The text said "This is the worst rendition of Les Miz I've ever seen". 😆
Oh man! Its two years on, so you've likely seen the movie. But PLEASE treat yourself to the actual stage show, if you can. If you like this, then you WILL be blown away.
Les Miserables is all over the Internet/UA-cam,from the WestEnd and Broadway. The film has some good points but it’s nothing compared to the stage shows.
The 10 Anniversary Concert is delightful, would be a true dream cast if they have managed to get Anthony Warlow as Enjolras. Warlow can be heard on the Complete Symphonic Recording, along side Philip Quast.
If you can find Phillip Quast and Anthony Warlow singing lily’s eyes from secret garden I was there opening night of the show secret garden in Sydney Australia the only time I’ve seen a show stopped due to the audience giving a standing ovation
He is playing Javert, a cop persecuting a petty criminal who is trying to get back to the righteous path... I think you would enjoy Les Misérables... it's fucking awesome... and right up your alley
This plays off in the early 1800's. Javert is the police officer in persuit of the main protagonist Jean Valjean. The final act plays of during the June Rebellion of 1832. So after the French Revolution which ended in 1799. Some of the characters also took part in the napoleonic wars in the early 19th century. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_Rebellion?wprov=sfla1
Without giving too much away, this is Javert, who is chasing the main character for breaking parole. He is the antagonist but not a "bad guy". He believes in the rule of law and that justice is black and white. He believes that you should pay for your crimes, even if it is stealing a loaf of bread to feed your sister's starving children. To me, he is just as sympathetic of a character as the lead, Jean Valjean, and the play portrays him in a good light - especially with this song - even though he is hunting the protagonist.
While a student at the National Institute of Dramatic art in Sydney,Australia Philip Quast was offered the chance to study opera in Germany. He attended some opera performances and decided it was not for him.Except for the training he received while a drama school student he has no formal vocal training. 💙
This performance is from the 10th anniversary concert of Les Miserables and I highly recommend it. The whole play is sung so it’s essentially the play without sets or props. The 25th anniversary was not nearly as good as the 10th. Philip Quast portrayed Police Inspector Javert. He has been pursuing a convict for many years and will not rest until prisoner 24601 is imprisoned once and for all.
This is the 10th Anniversary of the Musical. I read the book in high school, it was required reading, but had never paid much attention to the musical, but was flipping through the channels in October 1995 and came across the 10th Anniversary broadcast on PBS at the point where they sew singing “One Day More”. I was mesmerized, and had no clue what the heck I was watching, but wanted more. I saw it was going to replay in 2 hours so I recorded the rebroadcast of it and rewatched it. I bought the CD. And then went to NYC and saw it on Dec. 31, 1995 and walked to Time Square for the ball dropping. I’ve also seen this when they came to Dallas 5 years ago. As awesome as it is to see this live, this 10th Anniversary with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the choir, and the All-Star cast is enchanting. After seeing this and the second encore sang in 17 languages, I was disappointed on Broadway when they sang Auld Lang Syne but that’s the price you pay for going New Years Eve. It’s been a few months since you have done this but it is an excellent show. You can see the whole thing on line. Or you can just review “One Day More”. It sums up the entire first act in 2 minutes. You will be totally confused without knowing the story, but it will whet your appetite and be awesome so see your reaction.
If you haven't already sought out watching the musical, I would suggest starting with a synopsis to get an understanding of the subject matter. Les Miserables is technically a pop opera, so if you watch one of the anniversary concerts, it's basically the entire show without proper sets and props, etc.
The 25th anniversary concert (my favorite) is literally here on youtube to buy/rent (I even have it now in the propositions sections while watching this). If you don't want the entire one you could watch: I dreamed a dream, Confrontation, Lovely Ladies, One Day More....
This song is sung by a character who has basically devoted his life to finding this fugitive(who is one of the protagonists). He sees himself as the "good guy" but is one of the antagonists. No spoilers though, it is a very good book/movie/play. Definitely worth seeing.
This though, amazing! Now compare between him and russel Crowe 😂 you should watch the anniversary edition concert from les miserables and especially the confrontation. Same actor singing
@@erkkiboy but Russel didn't use autotune... but i get it, its fine. We can all agree that Hugh blew our socks off... and who knew Anne Hathaway could sing like that?
Absolutely agree. Another great one I discovered recently when I bought it at the Sondheim Theatre when I saw the new revamped staged concert last month, was the 2019 concert staged at the Gielgud Theatre just before they transferred to the new Sondheim. It’s excellent.
The 10th anniversary version is great, but is only the songs with no sets or joining parts. As someone who does not know the play please watch either the 25th anniversary version or the movie version so that you get the plot too. I'd love to see you react to this.
This anniversary recording was great. I loved the international cast studio recording. Other songs specifically from the show “Bring Him Home”, “On My Own”, and the climatic showdown is a masterpiece of counterpoint.
I listened to the 10th anniversary soundtrack over & over in high school, after having read the book. It's iconic. The movie, on the other hand, sucks. They went about it the wrong way (arranging the music around the singers' voices - very weird), and it sounds terrible.
Some of y’all in these comments don’t say “But where’s the baby??” then “THE FECKIN BABY” when you listen to any version of Color and Light from Sunday in the Park with George and it SHOWWWWWS. But sure. Happy for y’all’s “love” or “appreciation” for Philip freaking Mark Quast. I’m cackling. 🤨
THE JOY ON YOUR FACE WAS BEAUTIFUL....SEE ALLOF THE MUSIC FROM THIS SHOW THAT YOU CAN...THE MOVIE ISN'T HORRIBLE FOR A MOVIE OF THEATRE!!! PEACE OUT MAN!!! HUGZZZZ
Stars was a song of mixed emotions felt by a miserable Javert (all the characters in Les Miserables were totally miserable ) . . . frustration, anger, determination (or obsession even), religiosity, heightened sense of duty and self-righteousness. Quast emoted all that. What a performance!
Duuuude... trying to succinctly explain the plot of this show, based on an OBSCENELY long and very political book from the 1800's... it's a trip. Honestly a full performance of the stage show will give you the most bang for your buck, if you're open to musical theater. The popular 2012 film was... meh. (I'd advise against letting that be your first full exposure if you decide to explore further.) There's at least half a dozen other different films / TV programs based on the story, at least four of them are in English. They're all extremely condensed versions of the story (and some are just plain weird), and they all bring something different to the experience. It's worth noting that this character Javert is basically the OG of literary cops, with all the emotional baggage to go with it. Granted, he comes by that baggage honestly, and he applies the law to everyone equally. When he finally can't, it messes him up to say the least. In the condensed narrative, he's definitely the primary antagonist, but he ends up as something of a tragic figure.
This must be one of the biggest musicals in the world. It is so big in every sense. Teh music, the story, everything. It is really worth seeing. I saw this live in theater in London in 1993. After the show I could simply not speak. The plan was to go out clubbing. I just had to back to my hotel room and get to bed.
This is THE best musical. Watch as many les miserables performance (rather than film, tho7gh there are some good moments in). Can never do too many reactions. Full 4k upgrade of tenth anniversary on youtube, another reactor did it in full, you will love it. Try the 2019 concert version of i dreamed a dream too Heck so many great versions filmed let alone in theatre!
More than 20 movies exist. The last movie, with songs of the musical is so good (Hugh Jackman, Ann Hathaway, Russell Crowe,...). The Musical is still played in London since more est 25 years. Story based upon Victor Hugo's big novel, taking place around 1815-1823 in France, ending with another révolution
You should see the entire 10th anniversary performance rather than the 25th anniversary OR the movie. As much as I am a huge Russell Crowe fan (he plays Javert in the movie), and he CAN sing in his style, Quast kills this part and sings amazingly.
The movie is nothing compared to the stage show. Russell Crow I'm afraid was a very poor imitation of this. He just doesn't have the power in his voice. You need to watch the 25th anniversary concert.
so you know nothing about Les Mis.......so go watch the whole thing!!!!!! Then come back and tell us something new and different that nobody has thought of before!!!!!!!!
Les miserables 10th Anniversary you will see the dream cast of male singers Phillip Quast Colm Wilkinson Michael Ball Alum Armstrong set in the French Revolution also the 25th with Alfie Boe
Philip Quast hands down the best Javert.
No fucking doubt.. there my be one better in the future... but he is so... he is the Javert of the books....
100%! Completely agree! You should see his master class on singing the role of Javert.
Yup!! I was able to see the original cast when I was young it was amazing
He absolutely is. I've seen the musical somewhere in the region of 10 or 11 times in both the West End and in New York and he's definitely the best Javert out of any I've seen (and most have been excellent)
@@TorrentUK This show was amazing on Broadway! I’ve seen it over 30 times since 1997. The last show I caught Alfie Beau was Val Jean.
Philip Quast is simply perfection.
One of the few stories where you truly feel empathy for the antagonist. A masterpiece of a musical.
That's at least partially because Javert and Valjean are based on the same historical person. So they are two sides of the same coin and both highly sympathetic and flawed at the same time.

I always tell my friends this is the definitive version of Stars. I randomly bust out with this song in most inappropriate circumstances.
You aren’t wrong !
I hope you watched the whole 10th Anniversary Les Miserables Dream Cast after this. It's not called the "dream cast" for nothing!
You should react to “Bring him home” from this same concert. I get chills every time!
Philip Quast is Javert and Colm Wilkinson is Valjean
Phillip Quast as Javert, JOHN OWEN JONES is Val Jean. I'll fight you on it.
One of my favorites from the musical is "The Confrontation." It's where Javert, Quast's character, finally recognizes Jean Valjean, the man he swears by stars to catch.
Yes. And Javert's suicide. Both classics.
It’s funny that you mention Oklahoma! here, because Shuler Hensley has played both Jud Fry and Javert.

He's not the villain :C

Philip Quast also sings the part of Emile Lebeque in a great production of South Pacific. I have it on audio CD. He’s amazing.
It is great, don't watch the movie tho
If you haven't already sought out watching the musical, I would suggest starting with a synopsis to get an understanding of the subject matter. Les Miserables is technically a pop opera, so if you watch one of the anniversary concerts, it's basically the entire show without proper sets and props, etc.
The 25th anniversary concert (my favorite) is literally here on youtube to buy/rent (I even have it now in the propositions sections while watching this). If you don't want the entire one you could watch: I dreamed a dream, Confrontation, Lovely Ladies, One Day More....
U have to watch les miserables
This song is sung by a character who has basically devoted his life to finding this fugitive(who is one of the protagonists). He sees himself as the "good guy" but is one of the antagonists. No spoilers though, it is a very good book/movie/play. Definitely worth seeing.
He is Inspector Javert
The story is outstanding. The musical is great. But the movie uggg the best that can be said is the cast all gave it their best.
This though, amazing! Now compare between him and russel Crowe 😂 you should watch the anniversary edition concert from les miserables and especially the confrontation. Same actor singing
I like Crow though!
@@Spartansareawesome11 he sings like one for sure with his autotune. Jackman on the other hand...amazing 👌
@@erkkiboy but Russel didn't use autotune... but i get it, its fine. We can all agree that Hugh blew our socks off... and who knew Anne Hathaway could sing like that?
@@Spartansareawesome11 that i definitely agree with on 😊
Crow did not sing this well at all.
Definitely watch the 10th anniversary concert which this clip is from. Its amazing from start to finish.
The entire 10th anniversary concert this came from is incredible. My favorite cast to perform this show
This anniversary recording was great. I loved the international cast studio recording. Other songs specifically from the show “Bring Him Home”, “On My Own”, and the climatic showdown is a masterpiece of counterpoint.
This was referred to as the "Dream Cast" because it brought together everyones favorite portrayers of each role.
you'll be disappointed in Russel Crowe in the movie. watch the anniversary concert instead
If you dont know the storyline, watch the movie, then watch the 10th anniversary performance. The best ever!!!
Please please please do NOT EVER watch the movie. Watch either the 10 or 25 year concert.
Philip Quast=Platinum Voice
This is THE best musical. Watch as many les miserables performance (rather than film, tho7gh there are some good moments in). Can never do too many reactions. Full 4k upgrade of tenth anniversary on youtube, another reactor did it in full, you will love it.
Try the 2019 concert version of i dreamed a dream too
Heck so many great versions filmed let alone in theatre!
For those of you that might not have seen it...there's a Behind the Red Curtain interview with Phillip Quast...well worth a watch. 👌🏼
The movie is nothing compared to the stage show. Russell Crow I'm afraid was a very poor imitation of this. He just doesn't have the power in his voice. You need to watch the 25th anniversary concert.
If you like this, then the 2012 movie surely disappoint you. Go see the production or watch the 10th or 25th anniversary concert videos.
One of the best musicals ever!💯 Forget the 2012 movie, watch the 1998 movie version for the best film version of the book!
so you know nothing about Les Mis.......so go watch the whole thing!!!!!!
Don’t watch the movie, it was ruined! The 10th Les miserables anniversary performance is on dvd. Enjoy!!
