I love his acting too. At the end of the scene, with all the applause he gets, it would be hard not to smile, if not actually take a bow, but he remains grim and steely eyed, searching the audience for signs that Valjean is hiding among them, or that one of them will fall from grace.

I noticed that as well. Never breaks character. He is the epitome of professionalism in anything he does that I've seen.

I LOVE this analysis! “Stars” was the first piece my vocal coach gave me and it’s a very difficult song. While it’s not a huge range for a baritone, it’s just as much acting as it is singing. Philip Quast did a masterful job and will always be my favorite Javert.
For anyone interested, here’s an interview Quast gave where he talks about breaking down the role of Javert:

Thanks, great analysis. Perfect example of how to sing in English by a real baritone. That last picture on the last note did show a lot. I noticed that he was showing his top teeth which is a common technique to lift the soft palate.

He's amazing! Thanks for pointing out some of the techniques he uses to be so amazing. It's been decades since I sang in the University Chorus at the University of Illinois, but lately I've been working on "Stars." Quast is so inspiring! If could could sing it even half as well as he does, I'd be great!

This is so fun to watch! Love PQ - thanks!! Do you know of Anthony Warlow? Another Australian singer whom I always thought has better singer techniques than PQ. Would you be interested in doing an analysis on his singing? That would be lovely!! =)

He seems arrogant in his black-and-white view of the law, yet you hear the awe in his voice as he considers the magnificence of the stars above, especially on "stars" and "scarce."

I love the performance not just because of the voice. It's how he conveys what Javert sees as his God given mission, which is to throw Jean back in prison and put order back into his perception of what the world should be.
What's even more impressive is that he was(from what I understand) dealing with some serious stage fright at the time.
