That part just gets me every time, you can feel his powerful unmovable resolve to put an end to Valjean... Javert was my favorite character next to Eponine and it was all because of Stars.
1:05 The way he says "SWOOOOOORD" while lifting up his baton and then shifts his gaze to the stars, as if he only noticed them while looking at his weapon......... masterful acting......... 2:36 And when he quickly stands up before singing the BIG NOTES - GENIUS
I've heard Philip Quast talk about this. Apparently the original director, Trevor Nun, who is primarily a theatre director, is very keen on getting actors to show that thoughts were suddenly occurring to the character, rather than letting things seem scripted (although they obviously are). It lifts the performance and gives it an extra realism. Both Quast and Secomb have obviously worked it into their performances of Stars. Fantastic!
I love how calm and soothing the music is, like a lullaby or romantic ballad, and the lyrics are just like, "Old Testament fire and brimstone, BY THE STARS, DAMN IT!"
This song is the reason Javert is my favorite character in Les Mis next to Eponine... So much about him is revealed through this one song and sets up his ultimate downfall
His demeanor is UNPARALLELED. Perfect Javert. His vibe almost seems like some sort of reptile. Never losing focus on his objective, and letting nothing get in his way. You can tell his javert doesn’t let himself feel much emotion. Everything is strict and straight forward.
Honestly, I love that he's gone further than Philip Quast to even more animalistic and straight-toned. It just works, and creates a truly intimidating character, which is exactly what Javert needs to be.
@@lordyeetus6317 Love how he makes it his own with his inflections. (Like, 'and so it must BE'). Cool how he places the baton in his arm at the end with perfect timgin
The problem with Stars is that too many singers try too hard not to sound like Quast or Norm. While copying another version is never going to lead the singer to his own place in the history, It is unnecessary to deliberately avoid singing like someone. Secomb here sings in the similar style as Quast did and he is AMAZING. Just as good as Quast but not exactly identical. This IS how one should perform this song.
I totally agree. I didn't know who he was to be honest when I went to The Queens. This matches Philip Quast. I've often come back here . Especially the other night. It was really star studded the sky.
Was gonna say the same thing! (Well, mostly) Phillip Quast really MADE the character, and there are only so many vocal colors one could use to interpret a song.
I was one of the Gaveroche(s) from the 1998 cast, when Les Miserables was at the Palace theatre in london. This gives me goosebumps listening to this, I used to be able to watch it from the wings every night for 8 months (plus 6 weeks cause I fell off the barricade in the dress rehearsal of act 2 when Javert is found out that he is spying and ended up breaking my wrist when I hit the ground), with other cast members and our Javert would have the cast in tears when he sang “Stars”. But when we would do “one day more” as an ensemble just before the end of act 1, or even “empty chairs at empty tables” those are the song that hit the musical nerve the hardest (every Gaveroche gets to do ECaET on their final show with the rest of the “spectres”, the first of the Gaveroche(s) being Adam Searls)
Hey buddy I was cast in your cast but atleast minute chose spend spend spend at the picadilly instead haha AHH man woulda been cool to have worked with you I'm 50 now retired in Spain but still have a show I do now and then featuring Stars haha
Absolutely incredible. The pure passion and anger bursting out yet Javert’s stone cold nature still being kept at the forefront is simply amazing to watch - it’s like a physical and vocal manifestation of his inner conflict.
he ACTED not just sang! as most do... oh boy! he had facial expressions, passion, body movements, problem with a lot of opera is that they focus more on just a phenomenal voice but forget to act and theater is drama! is not movies and I love how he went full Force theater with big dramatic unapologetic dramatic facial expressions and of course amazing voice
Amazing performance! He sung it and acted it brilliantly! What a privilege to have been able to see him in the west end! :D I saw Philip Quast sing this back in 1995 at the tenth anniversary concert as a kid, this is the best I've seen since!
Yes, going to stick my neck out and say his version is better that in the currently touring version of Les Miz the Arena Spectacular (at least of the alternate two Javerts I have heard).
Cloning the original Roger Allam ;-) I was lucky to get to see and get to know the original cast. Many of ones who followed were really not up to scratch but this is very decent.
Warren McFadden I'm only just learning about Philip Quast but he does seem to know his stuff. Just wish there was some actual footage of him doing a performance rather than the concerts that seem to dominate UA-cam.
I saw him twice in 2015, once only 2 weeks into his run and he was amazing! His stage presence is truly outstanding. He commands the stage even when he barely moves, like in this song. And in his scenes with Valjean, he was so menacing, I honestly feared for old 24601's life - and I knew how the story would end! His Soliloquy is heart-wrenching, by the way, you want him not to jump so badly... Plus, I briefly met him at stage door (I was too nervous to do more than ask for an autograph) and he's a really nice bloke.
@2:45 How he switches from singing to unexpectedly cutting it to almost yell like a normal person "THIS I SWEAR" .... I love this part and so unexpected, it really portrays the anger by javert... Almost like two characters, as if the Singer broke out of character to really just tell the audience "listen you, this I swear" and this breaking of character adds to the effect he's trying to portrayed. Very powerful my favorite javert along combs
I saw him live in May 2017, and it was breathtaking! Me and my mum are both theatre obsessives who are very picky with the way characters are played, and when Jeremy finished singing Stars, we both turned to each other with our mouths open. I feel really lucky to have seen such a good Javert.
Bloody hell, that was incredible! It’s been 22 years since I first saw Les Mis in the west end and I still get chills every time I hear a good version of a song!
I saw Les Mis back in 2016 and I was stunned by his breathtaking performance. Usually it's I Dreamed a Dream or One Day More that gets to me the most, but Stars was truly the star (no pun intended) of the musical. I actually tried to search this up on youtube back then and show it to my parents but I wasn't able to find anything, so I was ecstatic when I stumbled across this video today.
Jeremy is my second cousin and both Jeremy and i are from Australia. I saw Jeremy perform in Les Miserables a few months ago at the Queens Theatre in London and he certainly outperforms. It was my first trip to the UK and it was a pleasure to see him doing well over there.
Jesus, this is the best i've ever seen this song done and it's for a one off show and not part of the musical itself. What a level of passion put in to it.
I love his more gentler approach. Like a conversation we have with ourselves in our head sometimes. This version felt more like it. I get why this one’s loved too.
I took my girlfriend to see Les Mis in London for her birthday last October and this guy was playing Javert. The whole cast was excellent, but he stole the show. Absolutely incredible. As someone who always considered Russell Crowe to be the weakest part of the movie version, it was awesome to see such a great Javert.
TheSilentScreamX I agree, I wish they would've casted someone like him who although didn't have any name, would've became a star and drawn people in by word of mouth. But, they decided an all star cast would bring more people in since it was a risky endeavor to begin with.
I actually prefer the RUssel Crowe version, the way he sings about God, order and punishment with an almost emotionless look on his face makes him a better parallel to Valjean than Sacomb's angry sounding singing and fierce looking face. Javert is not a man with a vendetta, but one who sincerely sees his path as the correct one. The weakest part of the movie for me was whenever Hugh Jackman tried hitting any high notes, hahaha.
Agree, there will never be another Quast, though Secomb is still outstanding. I wasn't a fan of Crowe, either. Nothing against JVJ but if Javert doesn't steal the show, something is very wrong.
Okay I agree that Crowe isn't the best singer but at least give him some credit. He did act it well. They did prioritize acting not singing. Plus I liked his calm, but determined approach to the role
I was lucky enough to watch him as Javert at the Queen's. He had just started the role so I wasn't expecting how incredible he was ! Definitely the "star" of the show ! Fab :)
I think his version is slowly working its way to be my favourite. I can’t say he is my favourite Javert as I unfortunately can’t seem to find him doing any of the other songs.
Jeremy Secomb was my Javert when I saw him in the West End. He was the only Javert that made me feel anything for Javert. I don't like the character, but the fact that I felt something for him proves how wonderful he was.
Ahh chills, definitely one of my favorite musical songs. Would have enjoyed seeing him in the movie instead of Russell Crowe but I know it’s not that simple. Great job!
As my appreciation for Les Mis has grown over the years, "Stars" has emerged as my favorite song. From my all time favorite musical.

Wow what a performance. He was a senior at my school, I loved watching him in fellow choirs, school musicals etc. Wonderful to know hes still singing.
I love how calm and soothing the music is, like a lullaby or romantic ballad, and the lyrics are just like, "Old Testament fire and brimstone, BY THE STARS, DAMN IT!"

The opposite of Russel Crowe, who sang the song softly, like a ballad in the movie.

How Secomb revealed and manifested so much of Javert's core in the line "And so it must be!" is beyond my mortal soul. Bravo!
