- Green Hair Algae explosion in saltwater tank. My corals are small and not happy and some soft corals have already died. I lost a hammer coral and torch coral; the rest are not doing well. At first I thought it was water parameters, then lighting, and now this green hair algae explosion out of nowhere is probably what is causing it. I have done 10 gallon water changes 3 days in a row, followed by a 40 gallon water change today, a week later. I have scraped the green hair algae, syphoned it out, and dosed a capful of hydrogen peroxide to kill this green hair algae. Any thoughts on how to kill this green hair algae and keep it gone? saltwater aquarium care and maintenance videos by rotter tube reef.

Turbo snails and a waterfall scrubber, i use one from clearwater aquatics
Clean up crew !!!!
I grow codium in my reef tank and have no hair algae anywhere its great stuff
Hey, i use a waterfall algae scrubber. I have it on for 2 hours then off for 2 hours so total of 12 hours on per day. I feed 2 cubes of food per day. Tank is 5 years old
Problem with doing the hydrogen peroxide is all that dead algae releases the nutrients back into the water column feeding new algae, vicious cycle.
Yeah, it's evil. Constant water changes.
Stop adding anything but fresh saltwater man !
Turbo snails about a dozen of them will mow it down but it will take some time probably over a month before its gone. Your options are limited though not having a sump.
will they go after bryopsis though?
Are you sure it’s not Bryopsis if it’s the fluffy kind? Only thing to do is Flux RX.
Just ordered it last night and will dose today!
The water changes are feeding the algae outbreak along with the lighting intensity and/or the length of lightning time. Also see if the ambient light from the windows is spurring algae growth. Ease up on water changes and cut the lights down to less then 7-8 hours a day for now. That’s my recipe. Hope it helps
Thanks for the info. Shades are pulled on the windows, and there isn't much light at all from the sun and none is hitting the tank. It's been at 45 PAR for lighting, about 7 hours a day. What about the water changes? How are they making it worse? I'm exporting the bad stuff. Thanks.
Use an algae scrubber
I'm building a simple DIY now. I'll film that and let you know how it goes.
When my tank had green hair algae i bought molly fish like 5 of them very cheap they can live in saltwater after acclimate and they eat all the algae like zombie in fresh new city.
The only way to keep hair algae at minimum is having it constantly being eaten. As in nature algae is present, they are just kept at bay due to the fish. Do you have herbivore fish that actually eat algae? I have 5 tangs in my 6 foot tank. They constantly pick at it during the day. For snails I personally like truchus because they reproduce. At night they really roam around the rocks. With snails, I do not recommend elevated magnesium 1400+. They become lethargic and die off slowly in high magnesium.
Yeah, I have tangs. Love tangs. They don't touch it much.
@@ROTTERtube Yeah, they often don't go after the really long algae. It may require good old toothbrush scrubbing to knock it back and hopefully they'll keep it maintained after that.
Get a shit ton of turbo snails and ever bigger shit load of smaller ones. You’ll have to manually remove the long stuff but they WILL eat the rest of the stuff your fingers can’t pinch. Then one small water change after you start to see it disappearing
Get some cheato
Trying sea lettuce
Hey any algae is good u growing it in the wrong place though grow all the shit in the sump if that doesn't solve it dose vinegar on a dosing pump adjust to suit haven't had an algae issue in 5 years this worked well for me
