hehe I get it. I works well in fresh water tanks too. Algae grows my shrimp population devours it hardly any nitrates very little phosphates Java ferns thriving too. Tank is like 15 years old now I do a water ~5G of 35G change when I run out of plant food hehe plants love it ! I store about 3g of the tank change water in one of those big 5g Poland springs water cooler jugs. The rest in a 5g bucket to rinse the media then either feed house plants or outside plants.
Thanks for the tip on incorporating a refugium. I’ve been battling green hair algae and my tank once looked as bad as this one. I manually remove as much as I can but it’s been a battle! I’ll try doing this!
I absolutely agree that a refugium is probably the best thing to add to any reef tank. And algae scrubbers are great too but if you don’t have room for a refugium or scrubber an algae reactor is also a tremendous addition. Basically anything that adds a place to grow algae other than the display, lol
Mine was identical and I used lanthanum chloride to remove it but you have to make sure the fish don’t get breathing problems and remove the precipitate with a filter sock. There’s drip methods available online if you want to give it a shot. It’s super cheap, too. Good luck.
My tank about 7 months in and cannot grow cheato but but dragons breath does grow. I use a 100 watt grow light with red and blue LEDS from Amazon so that might be why not growing cheato. Thanks for showing us this, that tank was a mess!
I run an algea reactor and a uv steralizer...and if needed always some biopellets on standby. But got to be very careful with biopellets... will strip all nutrients to fast.
Wow what a difference! I'd love to run a refugium on my 36 gallon red seas , the all in one is awful and hair algae is wrecked my tank basically to where I want to start up my weed eater. Just might try this, thank you for the video
My first tank ended up like this. I run a refugium these days for obvious reasons. This tank will end up clean with no hair algae. This is a natural export method that will prevail. Nutrient export is a common issue among new reefers and your video is a fantastic resource. Thanks for another great video. This is the REBOOT!
Looks way better. Is this the tank you were going to try Continuum Bacter clean? If so have you been using it along with the refugium? Bet your buddy is happy. Huge improvement.
For some reason i never thought of suctioning out the gha like that. I have the exact similar case to you. I was fighting dinos and then rammed up my feeding and nutrients to kill them. Months later i now have GHA. (A better nuisance to have but still ugly). Snails and urchins arent making a dent. Will try this soon.
4ml to the gallon 3% hydrogen proxide and a nice ball of cheato 4 days after the fact with a 50w light get this back in order run refugium light 24/7 til HA is gone then drop it to 18hr on 6 off . i just went thru this. Also turn the skimmer up to wet skim and do 50% WC after 2wks of being algea free
A fuge is not a cure-all. You still have to watch your nutrient import (don't over feed and do regular maintenance). A refugium is definitely worth the investment though. Watching all that GHA being sucked up was very satisfying! Now you need to use a turkey baster or a powerhead to blow off those rocks.
I tried a refugium and the problem was it sucked the display dry of nutrients. That eventually led to dinoflagellates. I ended up removing the refugium as it was too effective. I used Chaeto and had two different species of pods in there.
I only have a small tank right now ... I put in chemipure elite... Im hoping that helps... It has got easier to pull off ...but dont know what to do ...its a fluval evo 13.5... I have a protein skimmer i can use would it help??
i just got a big outbreak of hair algae in my 12 gallon and big bushels mine also get pulled right off even by the slightest touch or pull...sweet (do emerald crabs eat this long hair algae?)
Watching you siphon the tank it did not look like there was much of a cleanup crew. It would not help turn this tank around at this point but once the algae is under control it may help keep it that way.
Every tank except for my 1st has had a refugium I've been keeping fish since the 80s right now were at the point in this hobby our equipment is too good .just set up a tank prob a year and a half ago and I'm starting to bottom out on Nitrates and phos so I tried over feeding didn't move any points so now I'm dosing and I'm scared going slowly to say the least just never had this problem any tips thanks
I actually just started using the Vibrant Reef Cleaner today actually. I don’t have a crazy problem but there is some gha and bubble algae I want to get rid of. My fuge just isn’t pulling enough I’m running cheato and Vodka dosing.
Strong work! Just remember that PO4 reading isn't gonna be accurate with all that algae. It's much higher than 0.06 ppm. Keeping that in mind will help you better make future decisions.
@EAT SLEEP Reef I messed up a few years ago when I had a bad bout of GHA. My PO4 was reading 0.01 and then 0.00 the next day. I freaked out and dosed the tank with Na3PO4 which kept making things worse. Now I look at the color of the corals when I get low readings and these algae in the tank or fuge. Vibrant will make quick work of that. I’d pick up a bottle. After you get the majority sucked out...dose their recommended dose. Then wait 2 weeks and dose again every week. It takes a little time, but don’t rush it. Just keep siphoning the algae as it dies so Cyano doesn’t get fueled as a side affect from all that dead algae. It can release a lot of junk back into the water column so exporting as it’s dying is key. I’d run some carbon on that system too.
Ya for sure. I am dosing the continuum product which I have heard from very much trusted sources it is more effective than vibrant. I am on the second week and I can see algae already letting go for sure. But ya I feel this will be a great test to see how much of it we can eradicate as most people would consider this tank a loss. I feel we can get it back.
Well, I'm routing for you guys. Should be a interesting video. I hope there are no weird side affects or imbalance issues after this stuff dies off. Hopefully things go smooth! Good luck!
The problem is...most plant refugiums grow far too little plants to make a difference. To see real scrubbing and water polishing..you need like a 55 gallon packed with caulerpa to help the bio filter on a 100 gallon. Plus, that 55 gallon needs quality lighting just like it was a Amano plant tank. But,people would be surprised at how well plants do water cleaning...even helps stop tinted water..like a green living protein skimmer. They don't replace anything..media,protein skimmer, water changes...they just really raise the water quality, polish it. No pollution if you overfeed and no fishy smells emanating from the tank.
When I caught Covid, my fish tank didn’t do too well for like two weeks no water changes. No cleaning or nothing lights were longer than expected and I got green hair algae all over the tank I almost gave up after having this tank for four years I had to get a toothbrush and scrub every last rock and water changes and then finally it disappeared. Also forgot to mention I lower the light time as well. Only got the blues on the white light.
steri skyline I’ve heard folks say that they know it’s wrong but yet they prefer it their way. I would love to hear how these people pronounce words like chiropractor, character, choir, chemistry etc.
I have a waterbox 30g AIO tank that’s been running about 4 weeks. Do you know where I can look for any info on a hang-on refugium or do you have any tips yourself? My bio-load is low at the moment so it’ll be a while before I add one. Wanted to start looking at some options. Thanks for any suggestions.
My parents tank has gotten around this bad :( I was upset that they weren’t doing anything so I went and bought some Mexican turbo snails. they snails are taking care of it but I’m scared our Picasso triggerfish will eat them
I heard as long as triggerfish are well fed they might not attack inverts. But I think we should get rid of the triggerfish if it starts killing the snails. Right now we have a blue tang, yellow tang, 2 damselfish and 2 clown fish and a small file fish. Would removing the triggerfish cause any fighting in the tank?
All the gha, all that aiptasia, I'd restart. Be hard to add a cbb or peppermint shrimp now. Now all that aiptasia has been hit, it will probably release spores, making that problem worse also. Could do fluconozole, or dose peroxide possibly. But still, that aiptasia.

On a refugium does it have to have a light on 24/7?
Notice how the goniopora was thriving in this high-nutrient tank even with the aggressive competition from the hair algae. Boss polyps!
Looks way better. Is this the tank you were going to try Continuum Bacter clean? If so have you been using it along with the refugium? Bet your buddy is happy. Huge improvement.
Yup this one is it. I’m about 1 week away from fishing the 2 Week regiment.

It's possible the vibrant kills the macro algea in your refugium also
Lee Kosiewski I would be ok with that if I don’t have any more algae in my display. I do have live rock in my sump.

Bulk reef supply offers a few options. Also a algae scrubber is a great option
EAT SLEEP Reef thanks for the tip. I appreciate all the good content that you put out. It helps us newbies out a lot.
Hello, can you pls tell us what kind of siphon you used?
Ahhhh Aptasia...!!!!!!.those things are HUGE..!!!
That was so awesome to watch, sucking that algea out also why doesnt the yellow tang eat that algea?
Hey Antonio, with the refugium in the first chamber and skimmer in the second, would copepods ever make it to the main display that way?
refugium should always come after skimmer
I maybe wrong, but it looks like that tank has an aptasia problem too.
That’s just neglect. That tanks needs a reboot.
Nah, he had the tang gang in there, but they weren't mowing the lawn.
Good old fashion elbow grease and a brush to scrub those rocks
Then dose vibrant, and lower lights

That "tang gang" need to be fired! They're not doing their job!
Tangs dont tend to eat hair algae much, a lawnmower blenny is best for that.
Do you have a recommendation for those who do not have a dedicated spot in their sump for a refugium?
A algae scrubber would be a good substitute
EAT SLEEP Reef how much space does it need?
I don't have room in my sump, I use the Pacific sun algae reactor external to my sump. Keeps nitrates and phosphates at 0 and I have no algae issues.
