We Need To Talk About Marvel Comics (Disastrous 2023)

  • For the most part the comic book shill won't talk about Marvel Comics and how they've affected the industry in 2023. But that may be changing, even The Comics Beat almost through shade at Marvel Comics this week. Wes doesn't think Heidi McDonald goes near far enough. And lays a serious verbal beatdown on Marvel Comics and they're disastrous 2023. We need to talk about Marvel Comics.

The sad thing is Kelly Thompson actually write a GREAT series when she did Mr. & Mrs. X. It was a throw-back to fun adventure stories with Rogue and Gambit, a couple everyone actually loved and were rooting for. Marvel actually even gave her a fantastic artist for it, too, with Oscar Bazaluda. It lasted all of 12 issues before being cancelled so Hickman could turn the X-Men into racist supervillains. I'm not a Kelly Thompson fan but her series was head and shoulders above any X-book Marvel has put out since you could tell she was loving writing these characters and was having fun doing it. But Marvel punishes you for turning in good, fun stories just like it punishes you for enjoying those books: by cancelling them.

The not caring is the worst thing to me, I don't mind change, even welcome it and think comics are great for it. When Miller took over Batman he changed so much and all for the better. I've also read Batman, Spider-man stories that changed a lot but didn't work and even got changed back. But in all those stories you always felt like the creators cared and took it seriously. Now a days it's all a joke and silly, the MCU is doing the same thing for god knows what reason.

When the MCU started with Iron Man, and then Captain America, The Avengers etc.. the characters that were there to represent the fans were Agent Coulson & Stan Lee Cameos and the comics were also there to please the fans. They were using heroes that people like and were making them shine (Remender Uncanny X-Force, Waid Daredevil, Hickman FF etc...) But how is the target audience depicted now that Stan Lee passed away? As the vilain of She-Hulk. Small brains like Dan Slott will say that that's the most She Hulk thing ever but if it was, She-Hulk would have been blasting Disney for 6 episodes straight instead of the fans and fan favorites like Hulk & Daredevil.) The comics did the same shift but 10 years earlier and then never course corrected and that's why they are where they are at the moment.

I, along with a lot of people who watch this channel I'm sure, have been saying for years that this was gonna happen. Personally, I was hoping I'd be wrong, that Marvel would put out good stories even if they weren't anything I cared about. It saddens me that we were right, telling Marvel until we were blue in the face that the current path they were going wasn't a good thing and braving their retorts of "you just don't like this because you're a terrible person!" until so many of us walked away because of the indifference we felt.
Shame on Marvel and the cretins in Marvel who brought this current state of events out through their own hubris.

Let's see, Steve Rogers was turned into a Nazi, killed, and sent to one of the bad hells, and the thing running around calling itself Steve is a soulless simulcram created by the cosmic cube.
Iron man was killed, stored his memories as an AI used by Iron Cornrows, and it's now in a kind of cloned body. So it's just an AI based off of him, but not him.
The X-Men turned their backs on Xavier's dream, became xenophobic fascist drug dealing villains, and most of them are dead and what exists now are just clones with memory implants. They call it resurrection, but it's not, they're just clones. The person that died is dead and it's just a copy now.
They ruined Carol when she became Captain Marvel, turning her into a Mary Sue rampaging feminist.
Look what they did to the punisher!!!
They turned Iceman gay for no reason other than the original X-Men "need" more minorities.
They gave Blade a Mary Sue lesbian daughter, who's better and more powerful than him despite being only a quarter vampire, and she's nowhere near Buffy level.
Nick Fury has been ruined, replaced with a black son, who's been cucked and made to look weak.
How many times is Thor to be made unworthy and weak. The whole Jane foster as the "mighty Thor" thing was stupid.
They turned all Visions kids queer. I can understand Wiccan as he's basically a male clone of Scarlet Witch infused with a shard of Mephistos soul, but Speed is supposed to be basically a clone of Quicksilver and he became bisexual...now just gay, out of nowhere.
Should I even mention that Prodigy theorized that Wiccan made Hulkling bisexual and in love with him, and it's handwaved away simply because gay is ok. It's not ok, it's very very messed up and wrong.
There's so many wrong things in marvel AND DC comics. So much pettiness, stupidity, hate, and pandering to a crowd that doesn't even pay to read the comics. They have a shit ton to clean up to get people to care again.

The average life of a corporation is 75-100 years. Marvel is dead. I accepted that fact back in the 2017 era. Most people are not gay. Most marvel characters are gay. BTW, Marvel jumped the shark way back in the '90s when Spider-Man was ret-conned into Ben Riley, the fans hated it, and they had to bring back Norman Osborne. You could just feel the credibility crumble. It got much worse with "brand new day". Now I consider Spider-Man a second-rate character. That bridge was crossed when he wore a shirt saying, "ask me about my feminist agenda".

You probably could do better, it’s just that you had zero chances to access the market and hence earn a dime. And yes, I know that some crowdfundings are huge successes, but these people have built an audience over time, while Marvel and DC „own“ the direct market shelves.

I've been so blasé about american comics for so long now, to the point where this conversation seems out of my league. However as an outsider, walking into my local comic shops now just feels disheartening; a big part of it is what you're saying about the editors seeming to prefer villains to heroes and making the heroes look stupid; wouldn't mind if the villains were interesting, but they can't even seem to provide that. That and the art, it's just so damned ugly. I honestly agree with prettymuch everything you've said.

Alan Moore lost his touch after he wrote V For Vendetta in 1988. After that he wrote woke trash Commie bullshit like the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Part Two and Part Three. If you thought that Part One was bad, the sequels are even worse. Alan Moore once was a good writer but just like Frank Miller, he ran out of steam a long time ago.

The rot set in about 2015 at Marvel with the influx of all these shit assistant editors who never cared about comics. They drove off the good writers and brought in shitheels like Ayala, howard, rosenberg et al who drove down the average quality of the b and c list comics while Jason Aaron busily shit on the biggest characters Marvel had. The X-men office has been dire for years and they drove away Hickman who was the one shining light in that whole morass.
The only comic I'm enjoying from Marvel at the moment is Alien, PKJ and now Declan Shalvey have been doing a good job kind of under the radar, it's worth checking out.

I disagree that we need another Alan Moore as well. You have to have actual comic books for someone to turn them on their head. What we have now is $5 propaganda pamphlets. We have enough Tom Kings running around trying to be Alan Moore. Get back to just making good stories with strong characters and let someone rise above it.

Here’s another reason not to trust overly dramatic, overly self-assured comic book websites. You know how some of these websites make their own UA-cam videos featuring their articles and lists? Well, a few years ago I was listening to a video about bizarre moments in Marvel Comics or something to that effect (which is fair because man, have they had some bizarre moments!). One of the moments on the list was the Capwolf storyline, which was a late-80s or early-90s storyline with Captain America as a werewolf. It’s fair to put it on a list because “Captain America becomes a werewolf” is a wild idea for a series (I thought it was okay and had some good moments. I had it years ago, but then I decided to downsize). What made me do a double-take, however, was them claiming, “Marvel was apparently so embarrassed that they’re trying to hide this from public memory.” I thought, “What do you mean?! They just released a trade paperback of it! I saw it at the library!” Since then Marvel has obviously become even less “embarrassed” because they’ve released a Capwolf Funko Pop (which is proudly sitting on my shelf between my Endgame Mjolnir & broken shield Pop and my Steve Rogers Nomad Pop), had an issue with Sam Wilson briefly becoming a new Capwolf, introduced a Capwolf skin in a Lego game, and advertised an upcoming miniseries with a World War II version of Capwolf. In fairness, the four things I just mentioned happened more recently, so they could be shrugged off as a matter of shifting attitudes (embracing the weirdness instead of being embarrassed). However, them claiming, “Marvel wants you to forget this storyline,” when Marvel had actually released a TPB is hard to shrug off. I guess they think “haven’t said much about it recently” means “actively trying to hide it”? :-/
