How ACL Injury is Diagnosed and Treated

  • Diagnosing an ACL injury typically involves a thorough physical examination, assessment of symptoms, and imaging tests like MRI scans to evaluate the extent of the damage. Once diagnosed, the treatment approach depends on several factors, including the severity of the injury, the individual's activity level, and their overall health. Non-surgical treatment options may be considered for minor tears or individuals with low activity levels.

    Had an acl tear (Stage 2) back in 2018 when i was 18,wasn't diagnosed until early 21 which worsened the damage and developed a stage 1 meniscus tear as well.Wasn't going to get a surgery but doctor told me my knee'd be useless in say 5 to 6 years.Got an aclr in july 22.
    I'm going to state my personal as well as general pro's and cons for anyone who is undergoing the decision for surgery.
    Pro's:
    1.The instability can go away(pretty high chances) if regular PT is done (personally my knee is much stable than before)
    2.The chance of damaging meniscus(which acts as a shock absorber when we jump) is decreased (My pain associated with meniscus damage was gone after surgery although i didn't get a meniscus repair)
    3.Chance of developing knee arthritis is reduced if not developed already (Already developed it due to delayed treatment so the pain is there but reduced than before)
    4.You can actually recover 90% and above to the original condition before the tear happened and its reported that athtletes were able to return back to contact sports(Haven't tested myself out on that)
    Cons:
    1.Restricted or lost knee flexion(can't fully touch my hip with feet)
    2.Sense is lost in almost 85% and above times in outer side of the leg on operated knee as a branch of saphenous nerves right beneath the knee is cut down(yep,that happened but it doesn't bother me much anymore)
    3.In case of a pattelar graft,the graft site will not regrow,the tendon rather will be stiched together which will reduce your ability to perform many activities you could before(this issue in particular is the most concerning in my case as i have huge legs and upper body and it hurts to bend or sit with partial tendon)
    4.The chance of recurring still remains even after a successful surgery
    If you have a stage 1 tear strengthening your quads will help you alot with knee stability(i personally will recommend avoiding surgery if this fixes your problem) Stage 2 and above tears will always most definitely require a reconstruction. The decision of having a surgery is very critical,took me around 8 to 12 weeks to decide even with the severe injuries. Once you've torn your acl your leg will never feel the same pre or post surgery. My knee always gives me a discomfort and dull like feeling in resting position but i'm relieved that it atleast will work in my old age.

      After 2 weeks, my stitches were removed and from 2nd to 4th week, I was asked to do knee bending, Leg raises, few exercises ( by self) even if it pains but slowly and gradually ( I did this daily in pain too).
      (TRUST ME I RECOVERED FASTER DUE TO MY SELF EXERCISES AND DAILY MOTIVATION)
      After 4th week doctor said I can start weight bearing (slowly on leg) so I did after about 4 week + 4/5 Days.
      I left walker between 4-5th week only and started walking slowly and thus joined physio from here.
      Between 5-6th week, I was good to walk but again (with small knee brace) and carefully.
      In 6-7th week, I started walking even though physio asked me to do it later but i was bored so i walked a lot on my terrace and went on road too hehe.
      After 7-8th week, I joined office'
      (rehab continues)
      Now my 5th month completes ( ~22 Feb)
      I did Leg exercises in Gym, I can run, and rehabing by self but still needs to strengthen legs for months before I play Hard sports.
      All the best bro for surgery

    Is the use of ice evidence-based? Because I read it prolongs healing due to vasoconstriction. 🤷‍♂

    • @jim2725
      @jim2725 11 місяців тому +2

      The use of ice is intended for directly after the injury, to slow swelling. After the initial swelling phase ice is not recommended.

    what kind of doctor should treat acl injuries?

    • @TrevorRekt
      @TrevorRekt 3 місяці тому

      Knee specialists and knee surgeons. Before meeting my specialist and surgeon, I met with a general practitioner who ignorantly reassured me many times that there was no possibility of an ACL tear. He also told me I had to avoid putting any weight on the knee. The first time I met with my surgeon, he told me I had been practically lied to by the general practitioner. I had surgery on June 28th, 2023, and I am back to full competition. I am a cross country and track athlete, so this is very very good recovery time for me.
