    So at a game store I use to go to BOSCO the owner thought it would be fun to have a mechwarrior point free battle basically you could battle with as many mechs as you want but both sides had to have the same number of points. This one person bought all four types of the super heavy in the game, basically same mech 4 times only different paint decos and put them on the field, he laughed when the only thing I fielded was ravens 34 ravens. He wasn't laughing when my flock of ravens trounced his 4 super heavy units. He demanded to know how that could happen and I pointed to his 4 super heavy units and called them tigers, and then pointed to my ravens and called them Sherman's. He understood instantly and started to laugh.

    the speed of the tripods always bothered me. Its hard to believe the things could go that fast on that leg arrangement without falling over and faceplanting a new crater. Beyond that the Poseidon and its derivatives seem more flexible but realistically the Omega is just so much more combat effective that the point is moot. If you have nothing but tripods in a lance I can see the benefit but an Omega or two with a few mechs or tanks to handle anything that gets close has always been so much more viable on a tactical level in my experience.

    While I find these fascinating, it seems they would suffer the same problems as other real-life “super-heavy” designs like the Yamato class, the Nazi railway artillery, and the Atomic Annies. For the money spent and resources involved, you could have many many other, more mobile and more readily serviceable weapons.
    In order to be effective they’d really need to be a quantum leap above standard mechs - able to destroy tens or a hundred mechs in one salvo. Something like that.
    Still, they are fascinating to learn about and look at. Can’t wait for more!

    I'm surprised they didn't go with a quad design instead. Their stability and better distribution of weight would, I figure, have been an advantage over the rather unstable tripod form.

    • @gregdomenico1891
      @gregdomenico1891 4 роки тому +1

      With a tripod design, they can torso twist, and move in any direction. Quads have to turn to face the target. Another problem with quads is the lack of internal volume. You can solve that with a turret (like on the Goliath), but that causes other issues (like if the turret gets jammed).

    • @thegreatbamboozler4837

    Seriously though, 27 tons of armor on the Omega? That's like strapping an entire scout mech to your face. 3 gauss rifles AND 2 lbx10 AC's is a horrifying amount of firepower for a single mech. Every time that pilot pulls the trigger, someone is going to die.

    Due to this being a game, I understood why the tonnage was capped. But it doesn't really make any sense. I mean, why not have a 4,000 ton 'mech, with 50 rotary gauss rifles and 100 LRM 20's, with near infinite ammo, that has like 20 assault 'mechs that can deploy from it? Or even bigger. I mean, the USS Gerald R. Ford is a 97,000 ton aircraft carrier. So why not have something just like that in the Battletech universe? But a Warhound Scout Titan? That should be a good match. I am fairly certain that TS-EMP weapon will take down its void shields, so it will be armor to armor, weapon to weapon. Can Battletech take this for all Urbanmechs everywhere?

      Void shields can tank nukes and naval beam lances that can fire through cities and keep going, so no. Youre talking two completely different tech levels. Even scout titans have a machine spirit and the components are so advanced compared to Battletech that they may as well be magic spells.

    In the lore they are experimental but completely impractical mechs. For the price of just one super heavy you could field multiple lances of medium mechs, pay for their repairs, pilot salaries, rearming, ect. Tactically, they are also underwhelming. The Omega has a top speed of 32km on _good_ terrain, no jump jets, and limited weapon options that do not require a direct line of effect. Basically, it's an Urbanmech with a massive price tag, upped armor, and four more big guns. This if course leads to the thought, why not just buy five urbanmechs?
    On the tabletop? The Omega costs as much points as some of the best clan tech mechs, fields a scary amount of direct fire weapons, and heavily benefits from the WoB's Improved C3 computer. Making a big point game with it as a center piece and some lighter C3's to give it targeting data can make it a scary, but also very obvious and slow, turret for your enemy to outflank and bombard.

    As has been said, the cost of these things would be prohibitive in all but the rarest circumstances. You might carry a few lances in a "last stand" scenario when you have no intention of moving them, and you're holding a single defensive position. Past that... well... Nukes. Nukes still exist. Your single defensive line is going to be your tomb.
    Even on a per tonnage basis, you're fielding one of these monsters for every five urbies on the field, and that doesn't even factor tech cost and R&D into the mix. The realistic number is probably somewhere in the two dozen range.
    So, you have one massive weapons platform against six lances of urbies, if we're being generous. Death by a thousand cuts is almost always going to win this.
    You don't win a war by being an overwhelming presence, you win a war through cost-effective measures and supply lines, neither of which these monsters are.

      The Word of Blake happened about 2007 when Catalyst Game Labs got the license to publish Battletech material from Topps. By 2002, Battletech was such a mish-mash of IP rights (activision and microsoft owned bits and pieces, various novel writers owned others, the company that made that Battletech animated series, and, of course, Harmony Gold still claiming the rights to all the original mech designs) FASA wanted to dump the franchise. So, they sold it off to WizKids. WizKids tried to deal with the mess putting it all in the past, that is, by jumping the story of the universe nearly a hundred years into the future (when all the characters, merc units, etc. owned by other people were dead and the mech designs obsolete) when some mysterious HPG blackout event collapses the "Republic of the Sphere" and kicks off a new Dark Age (set in 3132) and by creating a new rule system dubbed "Battletech: Dark Age do distinguish it from "Battletech: Classic. But then, within a year, WizKids got bought out by Topps (who now own the rights to Battletech) and Topps licensed the rights to publish Battletech: Classic to German game company FanPro who published materials for both Battletech: Dark Age and Battletech: Classic (which were two separate games). But I don't think Dark Age ever really caught on. People only wanted "Classic". And FanPro's license ran out after 5 years.
      So when CGL got the license to publish the Battletech, they wanted to cater to the "classic" crowd and go back to the classic timeline (that ended with the FedCom civil war and the establishment of a New Star Leauge in the 3060s), but they also wanted to keep the broken, salvage dependent feel of the universe, so they kind of made up their own version of the Dark Age started by a jihad of fanatical elements of ComStar set in game around 2067-3081 that re-set everything pretty much back to where it had been at the tail end of the 3rd Succession War - tech lost, navies mostly destroyed, worlds in hardscrabble subsistence mode, the successor states and clan factions back at each other's throats.
      Then there was a whole mess of drama with CGL . . .
      Oh wait, you meant IN UNIVERSE timeline. . .

      @@liljenborg2517 just a slight correction, the Dawn of the Jihad source book was published in 2005. ( Mine is sitting on the shelf). The whole Word of Blake story line kicks off right after the battle of Tukayid in 3053. The writers and Developers had it all planned out, and then FASA went under, and like you said, the rest was History. I'll actually give Catalist a little bit of credit for trying; WIZKID'S and Topps didn't even really try.

    I don't see how a tripod design would move. At some point all weight would be on a single leg. Look at how they attach and imagine the legs flexing. Locomotion just wouldn't happen. A quadruped design would be far more efficient. Then again, we're talking about mechs so efficiency of design is kind of irrelevant.

      it rotates as it moves.... one direction or the other it could maintain speed like a crab walking in any direction....ideal for urban combat.

    • @SheyD78
      @SheyD78 4 роки тому

      @@zacharywood5090 The problem is its legs don't match up with movement in any axis, each one points towards the centre, which means while one leg can push, the other 2 can't reach out to take a step. Likewise 2 legs can't push in the same direction. (I'm just looking at the model, this may not be relevant to actual battletech) I feel like writing an essay in this comment but I'm already there compared to most others.

      @Johnston Steiner I am a grey beard BTech fan. The concept of mecha for industrial purposes I am fine with. The idea they could be used for battle, especially against real battlemechs I am not fine with. They just wanted to sell those click base figurines and someone said "Hey, some with giant chain saws would look cool".
