My favorite mech since forever. They were the first mechs I ever painted. In the Harebrained Schemes Battletech game they’re absolutely lethal with a maxed out sharpshooter skilled pilot. That and the command module gives each weapon a _35% chance to hit a mech’s head on a called shot._ This means if I get two called shots per turn I’m virtually guaranteed to kill an enemy mech per turn. It’s possible to get up to 4. The only downside is they run a little hot with large lasers and nearly impossibly hot with PPCs unless you sacrifice serious armor for more heat sinks. But with max jump jets it’s easy to hop away and harass with auto cannons (I like LBX-2s) while it cools. An alternative is just to stack one with medium lasers, machine guns and max armor instead of heavy beam weapons. It makes a decent close/medium range slugger with max armor.

I’m probably the only one who prefers the modernized unseen look, like in the 2021 April Fools TRO, over the original unseen look. Some of the reseen lols are good too.
Who doesn't love the Marauder? I have an old, lead-casting Unseen I purchased in the 1990s. I had to replace it's top-mounted gun with an old 40K IG lasgun. It's now part of my Wolf's Dragoons Zeta Battalion company. I have a new Catalyst plastic Marader that's going to be painted for the classic Black Widow Company Command Lance.
...The Marauder variant I used in the pre-3050 years replaced the AC/5 with an LRM-10 rack, making it more effective in fire support (especially since it now had indirect fire capability), & added a Flamer for anti-infantry work. 2 extra heat sinks gave it better battlefield endurance as well.
I'm starting in the first video, so I don't know how you adapt the feedback in future videos, but here are the things I'd be interested in knowing (presuming the information is available). - Famous battles where this Mech did a thing. - Famous pilots who did a thing in this Mech. - Which faction uses this Mech extensively. I'm surprised it wasn't mention that this Mech is one of the so-called "Unseen" even if briefly unless I completely missed that. I was listening to this while cleaning up my house. Found your channel after Arch Warhammer got removed from UA-cam, but now that I know you have a BattleTech section, I'll be staying even after the presumed return of Arch.
Thanks. In future mech videos I do mention some famous pilots. Not a lot, but i did it on some designs. I also mention the faction and maybe a battle or two. Not regularly but it definitely is there in some episodes.
Never had one of these, but you can see it's influence in the designs of oh so many mechs. The Matar and it's successor the Stone Rhino, the Timberwolf and its knock off the Rakshasa, Night star, Cauldron Born, Bushwhacker, just to name a few. It is unfortunately one of the unseen and of the unseen the only one I got was an Archer, which I had a bit of fun with but that's a different story involving a different mech.
The Timber Wolf of the Inner Sphere, it is a wonderful examplar of everything a heavy mech should be. It is aesthetically pleasing as well. Definitely in my top 10.
I know most of these videos were made about a year ago, but they are fantastic binge material. I watch them at work a lot, and I loved the King Crab video. Especially since I like to run a Kaiju king crab in MWO
I'm loving this playlist ^_^ Thank you GDN~ I'd like to suggest you include more lore stories with regards to the mech being discussed~ Thank you again, for the relaxing and thorough presentation~~
The first heavy mech in print, and in the original box set as well, this big ol f##k your couch machine has had some if the biggest names ever in the hot seat at some point! The widow, rickol, bounty Hunter, lord Glengarry... And many more. Even more than 30 years later a 3025 tech marauder will give new tech a run. This thing is to be respected in any configuration. Even Lio couldn't screw it up to bad. It would end up with a 100 ton assault version and after 300 years it was so successful that the follow on mechs that were planned by the Star league would eventually get made. We are talking a total of 5 machines and none of them were slouches by any means, but this is their daddy and where it all began. It's age must mean obsolete but it survived FASA, wizards, Wizkid and Harmony gold and is getting a new sculpt and it made it through the succession wars, 3039, clans, civil war, the jihad and survived in the dark age. Very pretty and very potent. Any game that you play that has one, keep your eye on the birdie, it's the hammer out the distraction and in both cases it's distruction incarnate. I don't run it against my brother, he kills it with fire, if he sees it he knows something is up. Respectfully I hate facing one and I love running one. It's one of very few things that matches the fluf AND the table top in the whole universe, it shows up and things hurt badly, even slanesh keeps away from these! Good luck MechWarrior! Get one salvage or run! Haha DOC out!
You seem to have a very good knowledge base when it comes to Battletech/Mechwarrior so I was wondering, do you know anything about the clan heavy Deimos? Was it just made for Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries (in a patch, the original game didn't have it) or a is it an actual clan omnimech?
@@cliffcampbell8827 its kind of an odd spot. Super heavies arent tournament legal last i heard. But they do exist. Im not sure if they retconned them yet or not, but rules to play them is available. As for the games, i belive everything but mech commander is becoming cannon.
@@paulhuston9991 The Deimos I'm thinking of was an 85 ton mech, not a super heavy. The best way I can describe it would be: a king crab body and legs, timberwold missile racks and the arms were three long barrels. It was in one of the mektek patches for Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries (free download only).
I preferred mediums loaded with boatloads of medium lasers, a decently large engine and single heat sinks when playing for C-Bills. Even playing by points the medium laser pigs were very economical and fought way above their mass. And when playing for weight this was somewhere in between both scales. Assassins were usually the starting bases.
Love the format as executed by Critical Rocket. As he's not a bad role model in that way, I'd suggest adding some juicy lore tidbits, like famous pilots or achievements of the mech.
In the PC game, BattleTech, I like to pull the 2 med lasers and upgrade the AC5 to an Ultra AC5. This reduces the total damage output by 5, but increases long range damage by about 30%. Also, I like to upgrade the PPC's to ER variants, and replace the heatsinks with Double to help with heat management. This loadout makes it a great sniper(in my opinion).
Originally the marauder was glaug battle pod from robotech/macross with the weapon load is similar two guns in the t rex arms and a larger long range cannon on the top
When I played Mechwarrior I had an M variant without the AC5, replaced with a Holly SRM4. That was like 30+ years ago I think... was a great in- fighter., when I played mech warrior with friends, the Clan stuff hadn’t happened in the books. I can’t believe I can remember this after all this time.
I love seeing lore about Battletech and the expansive universe it encompasses. This was a pretty good lore video, though I would make two suggestions: One, only list the most common/used variants of the mech you're highlighting in future videos. It's one thing to be thorough with your info, but a laundry-list of nearly all variants is a bit much to put out there. Two, You might want to put in some of the more notable pilots of the mech, as a lot of folks do LOVE to hear about the famous mechwarriors that rode these machines into battle.
Thanks for the input. I will be putting some pilot info in future videos, if I can find any in the wiki. As for the variants, this is actually a trimmed down version :D I will be attempting to trim it down even further in the future as long as I can make the video length :)
Does anyone know what model marauder was shown around the 5 minute mark? I’d like to track down one online, and knowing the variant would help. Thanks in advance.
Thanks anyways, I appreciate the reply. It took me a while but I found someone selling the model. That particular one is made by Insane Kangaroo mechworks. They make custom versions of battletech minis.
I would do only a few variants (since rattling off technical specs can be boring) but I would also add one or two descriptions of epic battles involving the Mech or perhaps memorable failures? Something about the line of the Mech as opposed to a specific build or type. IMHO this would be more interesting. PM me if you need tips for this as I've written Battletech fiction before.
3:35 You mentioned the Gunslinger Program, but by omitting what that was about - and what became of many of the graduates you failed to hammer home the point of how capable the mech really is. For those interested, here are a few examples For one there is Aaron DeChevalier, General in the SLDF and right hand of Alexander Kerensky throughout the Amaris Civil War and the Exodus. More importantly, however, each and every mech pilot of the Royal Black Watch - the famed bodyguards of the Cameron family - which explains why they caused Stefan Amaris such a massive headache that he had to resort to throwing nukes at them and his own troops engaged with the Black Watch. And even then some of them survived.
The Marauder was built correctly. I love all of the avianic battlemechs. This unit looks like it would deflect most frontal machine gun fire. You've really got to hit these with ballistics and lazers.
@@GrimDarkNarrator Notable pilots were usually mentioned in the box sets and in the technical readouts. 3025 tried to have 1 or 2 tales about notable pilots of various units.
Very enjoyable. The maurader is my favorite mech, only out done by it's bigger varients the maurader II and IIc. One suggestion is to note the more notable or famous mechwarriors of the machines. Otherwise a very enjoyable watch.
Pretty good video Grimdark I did not find it boring at all, it was interesting hearing about the Maruder as I have not seen it before. I also don't think I have seen it in my BattleTech playthrough as yet. The art work for the 5L version looks a bit like the Griffon medium Mech. One bit of feedback I would give is if you can find it maybe add some famous fighting it has done or is known for as you have done in past videos on other subjects. great work as always keep it up!
Trust me, you will want one as much as you will fear them. This design is an icon up there with the Atlas! It's a huge hurty gun toting screw your couch mech. It was literally the very first heavy mech seen in novels. I have an original and even today new and old players alike respect it.
Thanks. I'm glad you didn't find it boring. Sadly, the Marauder does not exist in the newer Battletech game to my knowledge. I think it has to do with legal rights not being granted for certain mech models.
It survived the Harmony gold law suit. I believe it made it into flash point. It's got a new mini coming as well that actually looks like it should. I'm in agreement about notable warriors and fluff at the end of a video though.
The Marauder is a fine machine. You might mention that it was, as many folks have pointed out, part of the Harmony Gold/FASA (and later publishers) images that were contested, and thus could not be pictured for some time, leading to the "Unseen" era that most of us old-timers hated. Perhaps a better way of doing things would be to list the original configuration, along with, perhaps, any star league upgrade listed, then just mention that it had numerous upgrades when new technology became available. The lore of the machine, if there is much, is to be mentioned, including famed pilots and whether the machine was favored or not. When you get to machines like the Banshee you can certainly mention some of the alterations made to try and make the machine more usable, but if you are a lore speaker then sticking to the stories and lore will serve you better I think. My .02 c-bills on the subject :)
that was supposed to be the final look of the mechwarrior online version but they had to make more modifications to avoid lawsuits from harmony gold....again. Thats why the mechwarrior online/battletech/mechwarrior 5 has the canon on the shoulder instead on the top. They already took many risks by adding the warhammer on the games as it is. That single mech caused the seccond law suit that got the original mechwarrior 5 game cancelled 10 years ago.
Ran into a later era Marauder recently that had plasma weapons and I'm trying to figure out if it's a numbered model or a custom loadout... The thing was a beast and I want one for myself.
Do the Liao versions come with twin self destructs? One for the chancellor to trigger if the mech warrior deserts and one for MIIO agents to trigger if not?
While a Warhammer has better heat dissipation and secondary weapons package, the Marauder is one of my favorite heavies. The Liao variant that replaces on e PPC with a Large Laser is a beast. My first mech on mech victory was with a Marauder vs Orion. Orion went up due ammo explosion.
You could use the free Mechwarrior Online game to better visualize the different variants and loadouts. The game don't contain all variants but one can easily modify with the integrated mech lab.
I thought about that, but I don't know if you can actually play as those mechs or even mess around with the loadouts unless you actually own the mechs ingame.
@@GrimDarkNarrator You can mess around with their loadout in the mech shop by clicking on the "view in mechlab" button. And sometimes you can drive some of them around as trail mechs. If you want to go the extra detailed road you could also use the Mechwarrior 4 Mektek version that contains much more Mechs and weapons. The Mektek version used to be free abandon ware and there are still links to it here www.reddit.com/r/mechwarrior/comments/7y3twy/how_to_run_all_mechwarrior_4_games_on_windows_10/ although there might be complications with running this game on modern systems...
@@GrimDarkNarrator Wow you replied! Love your whole series and everything, learned so much! On my way to becoming a real MechWarrior because of you! :D
Suggestion: You could try talking about famous people who drove variants of the mech when applicable, for example on this video you could’ve talked about the Bounty Hunter who got special variants made after them.
The 3D is my personal favorite Marauder. I never understood the logic behind the 5D. The 3D was intended to remove the Marauder's need for ammo. So why would they add a missile launcher when created an upgraded version of the 3D concept? I get a 5D I remove the missile launcher asap either for extra heat sinks, extra armor, or a mix.

Loved the video GD. And the marauder has always been one of my original favorites
It is one of my favourites as well.
Honestly if anyone finds big stompy robots being talked about boring, I am saddened because the Battletech universe is so damned rich and fleshed out.
Yes!
At 7:31 the new Classic retcon for the Marauder! Good of you to include it.
Thanks.
Great format keep up the good work
Thanks.
I just found this please continue this series. I haven't found many videos on battletech lore, and there is alot of good backstory.
Will do.
LORE FOR THE LORE GOD! MAILS FOR HIS INBOX!
More of these videos please! I'd be happy and eager to watch your videos about battletech lore on individual mechs and their variants.
They're coming on a weekly basis :)
The more of them you watch, the happier I am you enjoyed them :)
I'm loving this playlist ^_^ Thank you GDN~ I'd like to suggest you include more lore stories with regards to the mech being discussed~ Thank you again, for the relaxing and thorough presentation~~
Thanks. I actually do hold out major campaigns and such for their own videos.
Thanks for sharing the experience :)
The 3R is absolute junk. Ammo bomb in the LT, soft armor, weak brackets with poor heat management. All bark, no bite. Give me a THUD any day!
Definitely my favorite innersphere mech next to an Atlas and king crab.
I enjoyed your video the history behind the variants really fleshed the video out. I like the format
Thanks you. It's gonna stay this way for now, with some extra flourishes maybe.
Best mech I ever designed was based on the Marauder. 2 gauss and an er ppc. With double heat sinks it literally couldn't overheat
My fav playing early BT was a cqc machine.. ac20 and SRM6s in each hands with a pair of med lasers for backup
Kudos to Grayson Carlile and Duke Ricol for spreading the information from those data cores.
Love the format as executed by Critical Rocket. As he's not a bad role model in that way, I'd suggest adding some juicy lore tidbits, like famous pilots or achievements of the mech.
I'll try doing at least some of that, depending on actual lore availability.
kinda gives fear the bow tie a whole new meaning
In the PC game, BattleTech, I like to pull the 2 med lasers and upgrade the AC5 to an Ultra AC5. This reduces the total damage output by 5, but increases long range damage by about 30%. Also, I like to upgrade the PPC's to ER variants, and replace the heatsinks with Double to help with heat management. This loadout makes it a great sniper(in my opinion).
Thanks for sharing.
That Mech looks so badass
That's because it *is* that badass!
That's because it was based off of an 80's anime mech.
Originally the marauder was glaug battle pod from robotech/macross with the weapon load is similar two guns in the t rex arms and a larger long range cannon on the top
Your audio format is great. It would be nice to have visual lists of the parts and components when going over variants.
We always remember great moments that were meaningful to us :)
i built a pretty good Marauder in the Battletech video game; 2 LB-2X's, 2 Large Lasers, 2 Medium lasers. It was fun.;)
I liked this video, and I liked listening to the variants
I love seeing lore about Battletech and the expansive universe it encompasses. This was a pretty good lore video, though I would make two suggestions:
One, only list the most common/used variants of the mech you're highlighting in future videos.
I have loved the Marauder all the way back to MW2, technically Robotech. Its new look reminds me of something out of Metal Gear.
Yay love the new video
Thanks.
Does anyone know what model marauder was shown around the 5 minute mark? I’d like to track down one online, and knowing the variant would help. Thanks in advance.
Afraid it was mostly a random google search result. It didn't say the variant.
Thanks anyways, I appreciate the reply. It took me a while but I found someone selling the model. That particular one is made by Insane Kangaroo mechworks. They make custom versions of battletech minis.
I enjoy this, please do more
I would do only a few variants (since rattling off technical specs can be boring) but I would also add one or two descriptions of epic battles involving the Mech or perhaps memorable failures? Something about the line of the Mech as opposed to a specific build or type. IMHO this would be more interesting. PM me if you need tips for this as I've written Battletech fiction before.
Thanks for the offer. I would like to maybe keep the battles/wars confined to their own videos, though. We'll see how these evolve.
Liked the presentation. Thanks for the vid sir.
Thanks for watching.
Good video! BattleTech is probably my favourite SyFy RPG.
3:35 You mentioned the Gunslinger Program, but by omitting what that was about - and what became of many of the graduates you failed to hammer home the point of how capable the mech really is.
For those interested, here are a few examples
For one there is Aaron DeChevalier, General in the SLDF and right hand of Alexander Kerensky throughout the Amaris Civil War and the Exodus.
Thanks for the share. This was more of a prototype video so I omitted some things, unfortunately.
I love this Mech.
The Marauder was built correctly. I love all of the avianic battlemechs. This unit looks like it would deflect most frontal machine gun fire. You've really got to hit these with ballistics and lazers.
Pride of the star league.
I like it. What is missing - famous pilots, some kind of "fluff" story part, battles maybe.
I am currently adding bits of pilots and custom mechs lore.
@@GrimDarkNarrator Notable pilots were usually mentioned in the box sets and in the technical readouts. 3025 tried to have 1 or 2 tales about notable pilots of various units.
The marauder was always my favorite.
This video was great
Thanks!
The marauder was a beast in the original mechwarrior
Warhammer was its match depending on configurations and for 5 tons less.
Sweet!
Very enjoyable. The maurader is my favorite mech, only out done by it's bigger varients the maurader II and IIc. One suggestion is to note the more notable or famous mechwarriors of the machines. Otherwise a very enjoyable watch.
I'll definitely mention some famous mech warriors when the info is available.
I enjoy the history of it all
Pretty good video Grimdark I did not find it boring at all, it was interesting hearing about the Maruder as I have not seen it before.
Thank you for the share :)
This format works fine for me.
Great.
I like the version of the Marauder at 8:08. It looks like the old "unseen" version, but has a more logical cockpit setup.
that was supposed to be the final look of the mechwarrior online version but they had to make more modifications to avoid lawsuits from harmony gold....again.
Lol.
A common refit is to strip out the AC5 and 2xPPC and replace them with 3xLL Armor and HS.
Pretty good all around :)
Thanks.
Praise be to the greatest machine in the whole inner sphere
Man I love the marauder
Everyone does :D
The thumbnaol is marauder 2c
My bad.
@@GrimDarkNarrator no problem man, it's barely noticable aniways. Keepbup the great work
You could use the free Mechwarrior Online game to better visualize the different variants and loadouts.
That's great to know. Thanks!
Good video!
Thanks.
@@GrimDarkNarrator Wow you replied! Love your whole series and everything, learned so much! On my way to becoming a real MechWarrior because of you! :D
Great video Grim, Like the format & not spec heavy...Great job.
Thanks for the input :)
The F16 of the Inner Sphere
Thanks for the vid GDN.
You're welcome!
Suggestion: You could try talking about famous people who drove variants of the mech when applicable, for example on this video you could’ve talked about the Bounty Hunter who got special variants made after them.
I will do a variation on that in the future, if lore on these people is available. I added a bit of this in the next episode.
Really enjoyed the video
I'd like to recommend for one of your breakdowns my favourite the PNT-9R Panther
I'll add it to the poll roster.
Around 3:25 that is a maruader 2
The MAD-L variant has (+5) lawsuit when not used by Zendrati warriors
MAD-4D was the first 'mech I ever ran in a game. Loved that machine. Almost as much as my MAD-5A...
LOL Correction: MAD-5D 5D!!!!!!! I get the Marauder and Marauder II mixed up sometimes... he he he
There's so many versions it makes your head hurt.
Marauder is a mech that will never not be my favourite, always one in my lance if I can help it.
Just wondering though, why go with the Marauder IIC Clan Assault mech for your thumbnail instead of the IS heavy mech?
Just artistic preference I guess. I wanted something that looked "modern" and relatively higher resolution.
It's definitely one of the best looking mechs. Not sure I liked moving the dorsal cannon to the side though...
please do the war hammer because the war hammer marauder combo is killer on the field of combat
Warhammer is gonna be next, as voted in my poll.
