First book I read was the manga adaptation of Your Name. Understood almost nothing but the art was really pretty, and furigana is a lifesaver. Reread it at the start of this year and understood a lot more. Currently working through Blue Spring Ride and understanding a decent amount. Eventually I'd like to read Legend of the Galactic Heroes or something like that

Yeah the word banks are so so useful! I am very lazy when it comes to looking up words so it makes it way smoother
you can use chrome extensions like yomichan, which allows you to just hold shift and you get the meaning of the certain kanji or expressions in an instant, yomichan also is great for mining cards directly into anki

Love the last advice, it's always been what I struggle with when it comes to reading (even in English) - I always look up every word I don't know and make sure I understand 100% what's going on before moving on to the next sentence... it's very time consuming and sometimes discouraging but I can't help it, I feel very uncomfortable when I ignore the word(s) / grammar that I don't know even if I fully understand the situation without that knowledge. Definitely something I should work on! Thanks for sharing :)

Hey I'm in my 3rd year of Japanese at university and was watching through some of your videos for fun and I realized that when you pronounce A characters you pronounce them in a way similar to A - AAng like a strong A but in Japanese the A is more like an AH like in A - Appa. I hope that makes sense. The main syllables are あ-ah い - ee う- ooh(long o, like land of oo) え - eh お - oh.
Again I think you're doing great just wanna make sure your pronunciation is at a good place!

i bought the first two versions of the yotsubato manga but i wanted to wait a little more until i actually start reading (i wanted to learn grammar, conjugations, etc first) so i’m hoping to start very soon :)
Nice! Some find Yotsuba a bit tricky as a first ever book because there is a lot of slang that you wouldn’t see in textbooks, but it’s a really great series!

Personally I picked up a yaoi manga in 2017 あなたはいつも誰かの恋人 by Tateno Makoto, I struggled through it the first time I read it but I read it for a second time and finished in about a week. I read a lot of manga but I do read from collections from select Yaoi/BL publishers like Dear+. I do read Shounen and Shoujo as well but not as much as I read Yaoi/BL. I read more light novel excerpts on BookWalker as well.
First book I read completely was the first volume of the Shield Hero light novel. I looked up every unknown word, because there weren't any furigana, so I wanted to know how to pronounce new words when I came across them.
I had focused on trying to speak a lot so... My reading level is really low I think. But I just started trying to read Narnia in Japanese today. It took about a hour to read through the first chapter since I'm super slow at reading even in English. Lol... Wish I enjoyed reading more though... I never really enjoyed reading. So I focused on conversation for several years now. I'd like to have the kind of motivation you have. I took the JLPT N3 and failed it in 2019. But the listening portion was the easiest part for me. yhe goal for me is definitely N2 but not sure when I'll get there. 😆... Been self studying for 5 years. I'm amazed that you already read so much.
That’s super impressive that you’re reading Narnia! Reading and speaking are different skills so it makes sense that you’re finding it trickier than speaking if it’s not something you’ve been practicing, especially with all the kanji! I really like reading so I’ve found it to be the most enjoyable immersion resource for me, but don’t feel like you have to force yourself if it’s not something you enjoy or if it doesn’t align with your language goals 😊
@@AliviasNook Thanks I appreciate it. I've noticed that my speaking and vocabulary isn't at the level I'd like sometimes so I thought that reading would help me with both... Plus at some point I definitely want to take the JLPT again but I don't know when I'll take it. I want to enjoy reading so if I feel it's too hard or going to annoy me I've been staying away from it. Narnia has just the right amount of words I don't know+ words I do know it seems. Hopefully I can find something else that I'll enjoy too. At first my goal was just to be able to speak now that I can speak at a decent level and listening is really good I definitely need more vocabulary and to work on my grammar a bit more I can tell I'm really lacking in both sometimes. (sorry for the long comment again 笑)
have you yet, or do you plan to do sentence mining out of content you’re either reading or watching? If not it’s cool, but if you do/are can you make a video about your process with that? I know other people have done stuff on them, but I feel as though their cards may be a bit too advanced for my current level of aspiration if that makes sense
I have tried sentence mining in the past and think it’s a really great way to learn new words. However I haven’t done it in a while because I haven’t figured out a way to make the process more enjoyable/not distracting me too much from the content, and then I kinda forgot about it 😅 I’ll revisit it and see if I can figure out a simpler sentence mining tutorial! Another cool thing to check out is called Subs2srs
Yes I get that. When I think about the idea of it, it sounds nice, but then when I look into how to actually do it, it just seems like a head ache haha but I will definitely check that out thank you!

What do you think about books/ manga that have furigana over the kanji? Is it okay in the beginning or should you avoid it from the get go?
I love furigana! I don't think there is much harm in using them, unlike reading with romanji which you should defiantly avoid. Furigana makes it a lot easier to look up unknown kanji in a dictionary, which otherwise can be a big hurdle for reading!
Yomichan is a great browser extension for looking up words. You just press a shift key and it can show you any meaning.

@@cosmoshorts1835 yeah, though I mostly go to Tatsumoto's guide. They're all basically the same in their core. Also English is not my native language and I can say I achieved basic fluency at least, so I rely on my English acquisition experience as well

Trying to read Harry Potter and it is really overwhelming at times. I usually have to look up at least 10 words per page and find it really hard to tolerate ambiguity.
Ummm hey I have a question related to Anki... So I am using the n5 tango deck but there is a problem whenever I learn a new card its always a hard and advanced one because when I get these card I check their sort no and they are usually like the 500 cards and they have hard kanji and stuff do you know how to fix this?
It sounds like you have your cards shuffled. If you click the gear icon next to your deck and bring up the Options page, check and make sure the Order is set to “Show new cards in order added”. Let me know if if that fixes it 😊

I think you should definitely analyze what you are reading a little bit, to see if you can work anything out (beyond the initial "oh that makes sense"). Yeah it is good to move on when it takes more than, say, like ten seconds perhaps, or just is taking too long. Or maybe look up that specific grammar point if it comes up multiple times.
Like I get what you are saying, and it is good advice to keep moving forward, but one also shouldn't allow doing this to turn into a complacent attitude. Spend a bit to work kinks out, but keep pushin' on. Having the mentality that only knowing the gist of it is the way to go can easily lead to white noising when listening or just reading a block of text and never learning the more nuanced meanings.
Is it ok to read the first book in light novel? It has a furigana also, i just keep on reading on them even I don’t understand first. Sometimes i tried to dictionary those words that confused me. But I still understand some of those words.
theres always gonna be some ambiguity when you read books, as in anime there is visual context to understand the story from, but in novels pictures are scarce, but if you cant even understand slice of life animes then Isuggest watch animes with jp subs and when you get a bit comfortable try starting novel again
I don't think reading manga as a first book even counts. It's just your first manga.
Just out of curiosity, what are your two mangas on your thumbnail?
HunterXHunter No. 5 and 魔女の宅急便 (Kiki’s Delivery Service) which is a children’s chapter book. Wouldn’t recommend them as your first books, they’re just the only ones I have physical copies of (so far 😉)

My first mistake is buying a very complicated japanese novel when I don't know any kanji....
I want to read the seishun buta yarou series, but they are high level. So i think i ll start with よつばと！

it's the bunny girl senpai LN! is about something called "adolescence syndrome" and its really cool, i love it
its funny how the jp title is like very hostile and in english is just rascal does not dream of bg senpai
something that is confusing me is I see japanese books on Project Gutenburg and the text looks like it's written left to right.. like english books because of that o that makes me think it's a period.. marking end of sentence. Yet every time i hear tips from people they say japanese writing is meant to be read right to left.
depends on whether the text is written horizontally or vertically.

What the difference between books 角川文庫 and 角川つばさ文庫?
books from 角川つばさ文庫 are aimed at young children in elementary school and often contains furigana.
