      There's also a huge Kinokuniya book store in Shinjuku as well that you can find lots of Japanese textbooks. I found it was pretty hard for me to find textbooks for Japanese learners in a lot of smaller bookstores outside of Tokyo

      @@edwnx0 Exactly, AIATIJ one of the most popular intermediate textbooks, along with Tobira, among those who are seriously studying the language (as in not just to pass the JLPT while ignoring everything else). It's actually perfect for anyone who used the Genki books, as it pretty much continues where Genki II leaves you.
      It's clear that @Mr D
      is utterly clueless, and perhaps not the right person to get advice from.

    The Genki series makes me laugh. モスバーガーじゃないですよ!マクドナルドですよ! Or I love when Take-san takes Mary to kabuki and then she's shocked when he tells her all the performers are males. I felt bad for Take-san when he got groped by that 痴漢 on the train though.

    I actually find it amazing how you used the Sou-Matome series to study the higher levels. I'm only using the one for N2 grammar to dip my toes into since I intend to also use the Try! N2 and Shinkanzen Master N2 (I hate the layout as well but it's so tough that it prepared me well enough for JLPT N3).
    I personally have never used Minna no Nihongo, but even my partner who is the studious type said that it was too dry. 😬 So when I started studying, I mainly used Japan Foundation's online courses and supplemented it with the Try! book and Memrise and it worked well enough for me.

    • @johannakatakana

      Why not start right away? ☺️ If you want to use a textbook to study, I think you should get it as soon as you start with learning characters, because why wait! Maybe you could start watching some UA-cam videos about basic Japanese vocabulary/grammar, learn some standard phrases like greetings and asking for directions, and then go from there!

    This was awesome! I’m not planning to take the JLPT, but I’ve studied most of the 総まとめN2 books. Another book that’s been extremely helpful for me is called 日本人よく使う日本語会話オノマトペ180基本表現. I’m only about 1/3 of the way through the book, but I already understand so much more natural Japanese used in conversation and novels. Most of these are probably covered somewhere along the way in JLPT study books, but I like the way they’re all grouped together in one book.

    • @johannakatakana
      @johannakatakana  4 роки тому +1

      I should get that book haha!! Onomatopoeia is one of the part of Japanese that I still struggle with 😂 GOSH I wish there weren’t so many 😭 Onomatopoeia is covered a bit in JLPT but not that much, and I think you’d have to do what you are doing right now and learn them separately from the JLPT to be able to learn more! But it’s never ending 🤣🤣

    • @karenscott9680
      @karenscott9680 4 роки тому

      johannakatakana One of my Japanese friends who did a university research paper on onomatopoeia said there are about 4500 used in the Japanese language😱 You’re right-it’s never-ending. I’ll be learning new things about this language the rest of my life😂

    • @johannakatakana
      @johannakatakana  4 роки тому

      I’ve kind of accepted the fact that I can’t study my way through all these words, but I’ll have to live and experience them to learn them 😂 I noticed that even if you learn the meaning of them it’s usually different than the English translation (at least if you just look them up in a dictionary - it might be different with a book that probably gives you good examples), so right now I’m just learning them as I hear my friends use them in conversation 🤣

    • @johannakatakana
      @johannakatakana  4 роки тому

      No, seems like it’s not affecting universities (yet)! However, I’m visiting my old city Fukuoka at the moment and most vocational schools/universities age canceling their graduation ceremonies and all activities with students and teachers. I haven’t heard anything about this from the kanto area yet and my university hasn’t said anything, but that’s happening too. Many sport events, competitions etc are getting canceled as we speak, so we’ll just have to see how this unfolds.... right now I’m visiting a friend who works as a chef, and she told me that her restaurant (and many others) are struggling because of canceled group events and less tourist customers, so many places are struggling now. A good time to visit any place that would normally be crowded, like Disneyland or USJ lol xD I hope the US will stay safe and that it won’t unfold and spread like it has here!!

      Hi! Not Johanna, but I hope I can help out anyway :) I was super nervous about getting lost when I got to Japan too, so before I left I made a printout of the Google maps directions both in English and in Japanese. That way if I got lost or was wondering which train to take, I could always show a train station attendant and they could point me in the right direction. Having access to any kind of Wi-Fi is also a big help in case you need to change your route for whatever reason. Hope this helps, best of luck in April!

    • @johannakatakana
      @johannakatakana  4 роки тому +1

      Don’t worry too much about it, there are lots of students and everyone is new so it probably won’t leave any big impression, and most students probably won’t know that you weren’t there 😂
      As for what to do at the airport, Matthew gave some great advice!! Write down the full adress and name of where you’re going to stay so you have it to show someone, and try to research about the airport and what it looks like (where the information disk is/how to get to the bus terminal/subway etc) so you feel prepared before arriving. It always makes me feel a bit more calm when I’ve done some research about the airport before leaving! And just know that Japanese staff at the airport and stations are very nice and willing to help you, and most Japanese people around you would most likely help you out if you ask them for directions! If you can, look up on google maps how to get from the airport to your school/dorm/apartment and write down all of the station names and train lines so you have it in front of you when going! And good luck!!!! Let me know if you have any other questions before coming over here! ☺️

    How many books do you study at one time when you are practicing for the jlpt test?I see people go over several different books when they are studying. I’m just about to complete my genki 1 book, which took me a whole year by myself, and that was only 1 book!

    • @johannakatakana
      @johannakatakana  4 роки тому +2

      Well, I think the reason why people use more than one book is mainly because the books are focused on different parts of Japanese, you’d have one book for grammar, one for vocab etc! In the beginning you can go a long way with only one or two books that includes all different parts of the language, but as you advance in level the amount you need to learn for each section of the JLPT increases a lot, and so they start making books specifically for the different sections of the test. So people combine these different books to cover all parts of the test when they’re studying!

    • @johannakatakana
      @johannakatakana  4 роки тому +1

      I didn’t use any specific systems to learn kanji, I just studied them a few at the time, used them in context and remember them in that way! I personally think if you study Japanese you should learn how to write too, since it is a part of the language. However, if your goals with Japanese isn’t to write, then I guess you probably won’t need to learn how to write them and just how to read them! I do think that you could go about your kanji learning in a more active way, since just learning by reading (if you’re not taking notes and practicing those kanjis) won’t be at all as effective and you probably will forget at lot! If you want to be more effective, I don’t necessarily think that you need to use a “kanji system” to learn, but at least using flash cards or writing them down and practicing them is important! ☺️

      N5 is the beginner level and N1 is the highest! It’s not necessary to study according to the JLPT “system”, it’s more like a guideline to assess your Japanese level (it however does not cover all parts of the language and it doesn’t necessarily reflect your level completely), it’s mainly useful if you want to study/work in japan or in a place where japanese is needed, as a proof of your level! Again, it’s not always accurate to your level and shouldn’t be used as the only way to assess your level! ☺️
